Law of Contract
Law of Tort
Environmental Law
Employment Law
Fundamentally important in the initial education of any law student, the law of contract examines the nature of a legally binding agreement. Contracts are ubiquitous and to live we all enter numerous contracts on a daily basis, but never really think about it. This module will examine the elements of a contract, contractual terms, exclusion and limitation clauses and remedies for when a breach of contract occurs. Challenging and at times controversial this module will make you reflect on things you really take for granted.
“It wasn’t my fault…” words we all inevitably hear at some stage in our lives. The Law of Tort “is extensive and its boundaries are indistinct” Baker (2002). This module will trace the development of the modern law of torts through close examination of issues which confront us all in our everyday lives: the minor traffic accident or misdiagnosis (the law of negligence), the fumes and noise of a local factory (private nuisance), the neighbour who asserts your land belongs to her and walks across your land to make her point (the law of trespass). These day to day issues will be examined in this module which is both historical in context yet contemporary in its application.
A multi-disciplinary subject which will engage a student in historical, political, sociological as well as legal debate. This module will look internationally and domestically at matters that underpin the protection of the environment and the pollution of environmental media. Students will learn about the historical underpinnings of the modern law and how the system of Environmental Law has developed in England and Wales since the 13th Century. The module will also address global issues (climate change, transboundary air pollution and E-waste) providing a student with clear understanding of the framework for environmental protection on a global scale.
A significant and important subject which works in a multidisciplinary sense. The modern manager requires a toolkit at her/his disposal to tackle the multitude of issues that may arise in a modern workplace, be it a large multinational company or a small/medium enterprise. This module will consider the nature of the employment contract, its terms, the problems of dismissal in the workplace, remedies and disciplinary proceedings. This module is particularly relevant for aspiring HR managers who wish to undertake the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification at this University in the future.
