Welcome to the Lampeter Campus

A personalised, bespoke educational experience

Unlike other universities, you won’t be in a lecture hall with hundreds of other people. Class sizes are kept small to allow you the opportunity to ask questions, debate topics and have your voice heard. You will have plenty of opportunity to have one-to-one tutorial support with academics from your chosen subject. You will be part of an educational community where lecturers know you as an individual and can tailor the learning experience to meet your individual needs. Learn in an immersive environment where you engage on one module at a time. This allows you to focus in depth on one topic, rather than trying to balance your time between different subjects.

Pg. 4 & 5 Welcome

Our student activity days also give you the opportunity to try a range of activities including kayaking, bush craft, coasteering, pony-trekking, between bush craft, coasterring and stand-up paddle boarding.

We take pride in our versatility and created this course by listening to students and what they wanted. While other courses concentrate on what has been found or is yet to be found, the BA in Ancient Civilizations takes you beyond what has been already found about ancient cultures, into their world and into their minds in order to find out why it was found, why it was created and what it meant to them.

culture. You will gain access to the richness of this culture by studying its vast textual, archaeological and artistic heritage. Single Honours students will spend one year in China, at Beijing Union University or one of our other Chinese partner institutions. This option is also open to Joint Honours students. All students have a further chance to apply for short-term language courses in China and scholarships administered by the Centre for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute.

Heritage is a concern for the past, imagined and constructed by the present, but set within a wider appreciation for the future. The programme offers an innovative approach to study that combines an exploration of general and broadly based Heritage issues, with more specialist or particular aspects of the field. You will be equipped with an

understanding and appreciation of the wider field of Heritage. You will spend time working with heritage organisations and in the special collections which help equip you with an appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the Heritage sector or cultural industries.

tents Philosophy Philosophy is different from other academic disciplines in that it teaches you not what to think, but how to think. Philosophy explores the big questions – Who are we? What is our place in the world? How should we live? What is reality? Philosophy approaches such questions through argument, but also through vision and imagination.

Studying Philosophy encourages the development of core skills highly prized by employers: they think clearly, logically, and creatively; communicate articulately and accurately; analyse critically and rigorously. Philosophy graduates are all-rounders: thoughtful, insightful, and versatile.

Full-time Undergraduate Students

Students at a school or college registered with UCAS

Applying online at www.ucas.com All applications to study for a full-time undergraduate degree programme or Higher National Diploma at the University are made through UCAS using Apply - an online application system available at www.ucas.com/apply

Institution Codes: T80 Depending on your circumstances, there are some slight differences to the way UCAS receives your application.

All UK schools and colleges (and a small number of establishments overseas) are registered with UCAS to manage their students’ applications. You will need to obtain a ‘buzzword’ from your tutor or careers adviser, which you will need when you register with UCAS. This establishes the organisation from which you are applying and allows your referee to attach your reference. You may pay for your application either by credit or debit card online, or by paying your school or other registered centre who will then pay UCAS.

UCAS will begin to process applications for the new academic year from early September.

Other UK applicants, who are not at school or college, apply online independently and are responsible for paying the correct application fee, for requesting the academic reference to be attached and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS. Your referee should be a teacher or professional who knows you well enough to write about you and your suitability for higher education. You will need to make your payment online using a credit or debit card. The card need not be in your own name, but you will require the consent of the cardholder.

The majority of our fulltime undergraduate programmes have a UCAS application deadline of 15th January. However, you should check the application deadline for your chosen course(s) on the UCAS website. You are advised to submit your application to UCAS prior to the deadline specified; however you can apply after that date if we still have vacancies for the course(s) that you have selected.

The accepted wisdom for jobs and careers in the C21st is that we will all have at least 4 different careers throughout our working lives, and most of these careers and jobs have not even been thought of yet. This flexible, ever changing and mobile view of work attunes perfectly to the type of skill set and capabilities that a Humanities degree will equip you with: skills of thinking and processing

information; skills of evaluating and discerning arguments, and skills of communicating ideas and viewpoints. So a degree in the Humanities will not pigeon hole you into a career path – which itself might be obsolete in a few years anyway – but gives you the capacity and flexibility to go wherever you would like travel. www.uwtsd.ac.uk/careers

Anthropology Anthropology explores the fundamentals of what it means to be human. It takes the whole world as its point of interest and brings one face to face with the eyeopening variety of human behaviours both in the present and from the past.

Anthropology students at UWTSD have the opportunity to observe and engage with communities and cultures first-hand. For instance, students are able to undertake Voluntary Work Abroad and be active participants in staff’s research projects, both in the UK and abroad.

Archaeology Archaeology at UWTSD Lampeter is amongst the highest profile, research intensive and highly regarded programmes of study for the University. The surrounding landscape, coastline and environment is of a uniquely historic and archaeological character which help develop the unique curriculum. This makes for a programme of study that is highly practical, with plenty of on-site activity, which is rooted in an exploration

of regional examples and developments, and yet is global in its points of reference. You will learn to understand the past, and engage with theoretical and ethical issues. In class, you will explore issues such as heritage, representation, land use, technology, environmental change, death, conflict, beliefs and the evolution of the human body, mind and ideas with a view to broadening and widening knowledge of how humanity has arrived at the position it is in now.

Ancient Civilisations UWTSD sets itself above the competition by offering a wider range of ancient civilizations to study. Not only can you study the traditional Mediterranean civilizations (Persian, Greek, Roman and Egyptian), but we also offer the opportunity to study ancient American, Celtic and Chinese civilizations.

We take pride in our versatility and created this course by listening to students and what they wanted. While other courses concentrate on what has been found or is yet to be found, the BA in Ancient Civilsations takes you beyond what has already been found about ancient cultures into their world and into their mind in order to find out what civilisation meant to them.

Chinese Studies Building on a solid linguistic foundation in modern and classical Chinese, the Lampeter course focuses on the study of China’s history, philosophy, religions, film and literature, exploring how China has historically evolved to become the country it is today. Our modules examine China’s transformations by looking at internal developments as well as China’s manifold interactions with the world. We are one of the very few Chinese Studies programmes in the UK with a focus on China’s classical

In workshops and seminars you will be taught by specialists and active researchers. The influence of our research on our teaching offers our students the opportunity to learn from the best in the subject and follow the latest scholarly trends and discoveries, whilst our independent study modules allow you to explore your passion in its entirety.

Philosophy Philosophy is different from other academic disciplines in that it teaches you not what to think, but how to think. Philosophy explores the big questions – Who are we? What is our place in the world? How should we live? What is reality? Philosophy approaches such questions through argument, but also through vision and imagination.

Applying to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter is easy. Full-time Undergraduate Students Students at a school or college registered with UCAS

Institution Codes: T80

Applying online at www.ucas.com

Depending on your circumstances, there are some slight differences to the way UCAS receives your application.

All applications to study for a full-time undergraduate degree programme or Higher National Diploma at the University are made through UCAS using Apply - an online application system available at www.ucas.com/apply

34

All UK schools and colleges (and a small number of establishments overseas) are registered with UCAS to manage their students’ applications. You will need to obtain a ‘buzzword’ from your tutor or careers adviser, which you will need when you register with UCAS. This establishes the organisation from which you are applying and allows your referee to attach your reference. You may pay for your application either by credit or debit card online, or by paying your school or other registered centre who will then pay UCAS.

When to apply UCAS will begin to process applications for the new academic year from early September.

Independent applicants in the UK Other UK applicants, who are not at school or college, apply online independently and are responsible for paying the correct application fee, for requesting the academic reference to be attached and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS. Your referee should be a teacher or professional who knows you well enough to write about you and your suitability for higher education. You will need to make your payment online using a credit or debit card. The card need not be in your own name, but you will require the consent of the cardholder.

International applicants outside the UK (EU and worldwide) Individuals from the EU (excluding the UK) and worldwide, apply online independently to the University, except for those whose school or college is registered with UCAS. Advice is available from British Council offices and other centres overseas, such as your school or college. For all applicants, there are full instructions at www. ucas.com to make it as easy as possible for you to fill in your online application. If you require further information and advice, you can contact the UCAS Customer Service Unit on +44 (0)871 468 0468, open Monday to Friday, 08.30 18.00 (UK time).

Part-Time You can study around your current commitments, at your own pace, gradually gaining credit, which will count towards your final qualification. Studying for an undergraduate qualification can take between two and six years to complete depending on how much time you have available to commit towards your studies. www.uwtsd.ac.uk/apply/ how-to-apply-part-time

Do more, see further, achieve The accepted wisdom for jobs and careers in the 21st century is that we will all have at least 4 different careers throughout our working lives, and most of these careers and jobs have not even been thought of yet. This flexible, ever changing and mobile view of work attunes perfectly to the type of skill set and capabilities that a Humanities degree will equip you with: skills of thinking and processing

information; skills of evaluating and discerning arguments, and skills of communicating ideas and viewpoints. So a degree in the Humanities will not pigeon hole you into a career path – which itself might be obsolete in a few years anyway – but gives you the capacity and flexibility to go wherever you would like. www.uwtsd.ac.uk/careers

After Lampeter On graduating you automatically become part of a bigger community, namely as an Alumnus/a of the University. Our Alumni are passionate and deeply committed to Lampeter and hold a variety of different types of reunions throughout the year both in Lampeter but also in London, Cardiff and Cheltenham (with smaller branches in the USA and in Hong Kong). The annual summer three day reunion is the highlight of the year where alumni
