Late applications are permitted under special circumstances and incur an additional administration fee of £20.

04

FEES, BUR SA R IES A ND SCHOL A R SHIPS FEES The School fee for 2019-2020 is £18,233. Fees may be paid by monthly Direct Debit. A deposit of £800 is payable on acceptance of a place. This will be retained in full until the pupil leaves, when it will be refunded less any balance owing to the School. Parents who fail to take up their child’s place will lose their deposit. The following costs are not covered by the fees: lunches, uniform, external examination entry fees, individual music tuition, and part-cost of a small number of excursions away from school.

W HITGIF T FOUNDATION BUR SA R IES Means-tested bursaries (reduced fees) will be offered to a selected number of pupils following the entrance examination, depending on performance. Students will retain a bursary place throughout their time in the School, subject to annual reassessment and satisfactory academic progress. Bursaries are awarded at the sole discretion of The Whitgift Foundation. Full details of Whitgift Foundation bursaries, as well as details of how to get an application form, can be found on the their website: www.whitgiftfoundation.co.uk The deadline for submitting bursary applications to The Whitgift Foundation is Friday 29 November 2019.

05

TRINIT Y SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK

SCHOL A R SHIPS There are several types of scholarship award available to pupils at Trinity: • Academic • Music • Sport • Drama • Art • Design and Technology (10+, 11+ and 13+ only) Scholarship awards are made without regard to parental income and are worth a percentage of the School fees, up to a maximum of 50%, although awards of this level are rare. The scholarship will remain throughout a pupil’s school career provided they maintain the expected standards and level of commitment. Even if a Whitgift Foundation bursary has been awarded, a scholarship may also be given. Where this is the case, and the bursary and scholarship together account for all of the fees, the bursary is applied first and the scholarship percentage will be variable. This means that if the bursary award is ever reduced, the scholarship level will be increased up to the maximum amount. Some scholarship awards are honorary. In these cases, there is no fee reduction, but students will receive the same support and benefits as other scholarship recipients. Please note that all applicants sit the same entrance examination papers for their appropriate age group and subjects. There are no additional scholarship examinations, but instead each scholarship subject applied for will be subject to an individual assessment, detailed in the relevant section of this guide.

06

AC ADEMIC SCHOL ARSHIPS Any pupil, at any age group, applying for admission to Trinity will automatically be considered for an academic scholarship. This applies equally to applicants for entry at 10+, 11+, 13+, Sixth Form and other ages of admission. No separate form is required. For entry to the Sixth Form the academic scholarship award is automatically assessed following our entrance exam and interview. For all others the academic scholarship award is based on: • Performance in our standard Entrance Examination papers. • An interview, which may incorporate additional tests. • A reference from the pupil’s current school.

MUSIC For many years we have maintained a strong tradition of instrumental and choral music. We are proud to have some very talented students who lead our many orchestras, wind bands and smaller instrumental groups. Hardly a week goes by without a concert of some kind, either within the School or in public. Our instrumentalists have had consistent successes in competitions and festivals, and for many consecutive years our ensembles have performed at the finalists’ concerts of the Pro Corda National Chamber Music Festival. A whole range of pupils are now enjoying rewarding careers in different spheres of music, including orchestral and chamber music players, conductors, singers, composers and arrangers, pianists, organists, teachers on the staff of London music colleges, pop musicians, and others involved in music administration, therapy and the media.

Among our alumni who enjoy a successful professional life are Stephen Bryant, Leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra; Anthony Britten, film music composer and music director of West End shows and the Royal National Theatre; Mark Fleming, member of the vocal group Cantabile; Nicholas Whiting, Associate Leader, BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Ken Burton, Conductor of the London Adventist Chorale; and Robin O’Neill, principal bassoonist in the Philharmonic Orchestra. Many other former pupils – instrumentalists and singers – actively maintain their music as a paramount hobby.

08

SPORT We are committed to making our students the best in their sport(s). This is achieved through giving our students access to elite level coaching, establishing links with professional sporting academies, and our High Performance Programme that encompasses a holistic approach to athlete development, including movement literacy, nutrition, psychology and mental resilience. As a result we have an outstanding record of achievement in sport and many of our students go on to gain district, county and international recognition at senior level.

DR A M A We have a strong tradition in Drama and our students have appeared in film, television and in the West End. Our students take touring productions into local schools and to China. Our Drama Department is thriving academically at both GCSE and A Level and therefore competition for Drama scholarships is great and we have to operate a rigorous audition process.

ART Our art facilities at Trinity encompass everything from fine art painting and sculpture, photography (both dark-room and digital), film making, ceramics, printmaking and graphic design. Our students have gone on to the best art colleges nationally and worldwide and have worked across the creative industries.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY We are proud of our Design and Technology facilities. Our students have gone on to study at top universities and to work as architects, engineers and designers in a huge range of fields from film, TV and theatre, the automotive and aeronautical industries, and product and fashion design.

09

LOW ER SCHOOL A PPLIC ATIONS

We have three usual points of entry: two into the Lower School at 10+ and at 11+, and one into the Middle School at 13+. The reasons for choosing one point of entry over another will vary from family to family, but at whichever age you are applying, we will do everything we can to make the process as smooth for you as possible. David Price, Director of Admissions (10, 11 and 13+)

10

10 + EN TRY

11+ EN TRY

The transition from primary to secondary school can be a daunting time for parents and boys alike, so making the move to Trinity at Year 6 will offer your son the opportunity to work in an academically rigorous environment, whilst also allowing him to benefit from the huge range of cocurricular opportunities we offer.

We know that joining secondary school can be a daunting prospect, but at Trinity it’s an exciting time that’s full of opportunities to get stuck in to new activities and make new friends, within an academically rigorous and wideranging curriculum. Your son will have access to the full range of co-curricular opportunities that we have to offer and will be encouraged to participate fully into the life of the School.

Freed from the distraction of having to prepare for SATs or 11+ exams, your son will be able to make the most of a year of intellectual and creative challenges which will inspire, extend and energise his mind. At the same time, he will be encouraged to involve himself in a wealth of other opportunities. Another reason you may want to apply for 10+ entry is that, with a smaller number of boys joining at 10+, they soon get to know each other, helping them get used to a larger school environment.

Our induction programme, which includes our new boys’ morning and an activities trip is designed to ensure that your son has the best transition from his primary or prep school. With class sizes of around 21 students, you son’s form tutor and his teachers will get to know your son quickly and he will always have someone to ask if you have any questions or worries. He will also have a Sixth Form mentor, who has had the same experiences, and is another person to go if he needs help, advice, or just someone to talk to.

11

TRINIT Y SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK

13 + EN TRY The majority of pupils applying at 13+ do so because they wish to take advantage of the opportunities provided by their current prep school in Years 7 and 8, particularly the positions of responsibility they can hold in the school at this level. Very occasionally, boys who were unsuccessful in the 11+ exam reapply at 13+. Parents of boys already in state secondary schools may feel that at 13+ their sons will benefit from the balance of the rigorous academic education, alongside a caring ethos and an outstanding range of co-curricular activities, that we can offer. When your son joins Trinity at 13+ he will be welcomed into an academically rigorous, dynamic and exciting community. Alongside fun and challenging lessons that will ensure he is well prepared for the next step into GCSEs, he can take advantage of the wealth of co-curricular activities available at that age group, including Sub Aqua, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and CCF. He’ll be well supported in his transition to Trinity, with Form mentors on hand to help with any questions he may have.

MUSIC SCHOL ARSHIPS Music Awards are offered to students with exceptional musical promise on at least one instrument. Although some candidates may not have taken music exams, most candidates are between Grade III and Grade IV standard (Associated Board) on their principal instrument at 10+, Grade V at 11+, Grade VII at 13+. Auditions will take place during the week beginning Monday 20th January 2020 for 10+, 11+ and 13+ applicants. Candidates should be prepared to play two pieces on their principal instrument and one piece on another instrument (if they play one). They will be expected to read a short piece at sight, and to answer questions to show their musicianship. Full details will be sent to all candidates who are offered an audition. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

SINGING AWARD

These can be awarded with up to 50% remission of the school fee. Additionally, we will provide free music tuition on two instruments (tuition at school or with a private teacher) and the free loan of orchestral instruments.

For talented singers, we offer free vocal tuition from a professional singing teacher. A student may hold a Singing Award as well as a Music Scholarship or Tuition Award. A singing award may be offered, during a pupil’s time at the school, to singers who make a significant contribution to the school choir, at the discretion of the Director of Music. Again, there is no formal fee remission associated with these awards.

MUSIC TUITION AWARDS We will offer free music tuition on two instruments (tuition at school or with a private teacher) and the free loan of orchestral instruments. There is no formal fee remission associated with these awards.

16

SPORTS SCHOL ARSHIPS Sports scholarships are awarded to boys who show exceptional promise in at least one sport. No previous county or club experience is required, but some may already be members of a school, club or representative teams. Boys who perform well enough in the entrance examination to be invited for an interview are assessed in January or early February of the year of entry. Up to 50% remission of the school fee can be awarded. We also award Honorary Sports Scholarships, which do not have an associated fee remission. Any boys awarded a sports scholarship – whether financial or honorary – will receive the same support and mentoring in school. Sports scholars will be invited to be part of our Sports Mentor programme. As a member of this programme, a member of our Sports staff will be matched with them and will be their personal mentor. The mentor will complement the sport(s) they enjoy most, will be there to oversee sporting progress, and will offer advice and support on fitness, training schedules, nutrition and recovery from injuries.

Sports scholars will receive an individual Strength and Conditioning programme specific to their needs and sports, and will be able to use our state-of-the-art athletic performance suite for training and conditioning. Additionally, they will be invited to attend a series of seminars and workshops throughout the year on topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, leadership and other areas of sporting interest. From these sessions our scholars will gain insight into a professional sportsperson’s career and what is required to become an elite athlete.

17

TRINIT Y SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK

Candidates may also have taken LAMDA or Speech and Drama examinations and achieved a Distinction, or be a very talented member of a school drama club or drama group. Applicants must be prepared to present a portfolio of their performance or production work at the scholarship interview. Students who perform well enough in the entrance examination to be invited for an interview may be invited to audition in late January or early February of the year of entry. 10+ and 11+ candidates should fill in the scholarship CV and personal statement form and prepare a short 1-minute monologue from a play (or dramatic poem) that they are passionate about. 13+ candidates should fill in the scholarship CV and personal statement form and prepare a short 1-2 minute monologue from a play that they are passionate about.

All candidates should be prepared to deliver their piece to the assembled candidates, as well as working on group tasks in the audition.

ART OR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY SCHOL ARSHIPS These are awarded to students who show exceptional promise in one of these subjects. Applicants must have the support of a teacher at their present school and be prepared to present a portfolio or samples of their practical work. Up to 50% remission of the school fee can be awarded.

18

A PPLIC ATION PROCESS After submitting your application, the selection process for entry to Trinity at 10+, 11+ or 13+ is based on three sources of information: an entrance examination, interview, and a reference from the pupil’s present school.

1. ENTR ANCE EX A MINATION

3 . SCHOL ARSHIP AWARDS

About 40% of our pupils come from other independent schools, 60% from state primary schools. The entrance examination is designed to suit both.

Invitations to scholarship assessments will be sent out after our entrance examination.

At 10+, 11+ and 13+ the following papers are set:

4 . OFFERS

• English comprehension and essay – 1 hour • Mathematics – 1 hour • Verbal reasoning test – 1 hour These papers take into account the National Curriculum, and sample questions for English and Mathematics may be obtained from our Admissions team, or can be downloaded from our website.

2. INTERVIEWS The interview is an important part of our admissions process for 10+, 11+ and 13+. Interviews are a one-to-one conversation between boys and a member of our teaching staff. They are a great opportunity for us to get to know your son better. The interview may cover general topics, or may be specific to Maths or English. Please note that we do not interview every boy who has sat for our entrance exams. Only boys that are being considered for a place will be interviewed, and not all those interviewed will be offered a place.

Offers of 10+, 11+ and 13+ places are likely to be posted to parents on 13 February 2020, in accordance with an agreement between Trinity Group schools. Parents will be asked to reply after grammar and other state school offers have been made. If parents need to hear before this date, perhaps because they have been made an offer by a non-Trinity Group school and are being pressed for a definitive reply, they should contact our Admissions team.

5 . ACCEPTANCE OF PL ACES If you receive an offer of a place, or a place on our waiting list, the deadline for replies will be Friday 6 March for 10+ and 11+ and Monday 13 March for 13+. We would respectfully ask that, whether you intend to take up the place offered or not, you let us know as soon as you are able, and by the published deadline at the absolute latest. This enables us to offer places from the waiting list sooner and make life easier for other families, who often have difficult choices to make themselves.

SI X TH FOR M A DM ISSIONS

Our Sixth Form has a an excellent reputation for academic excellence, alongside a deep-rooted tradition of pastoral care. The majority of our Fifth Year students join our Sixth Form, with up to 50 new students, each academic year. Most 16+ applications are from girls but we also welcome new boys, too. We offer a range of induction events in the months preceding the start of the academic year providing opportunities for students to meet each other and other students, so that you feel welcomed and connected by the time that the new academic term starts in September. Antonia Geldeard, Deputy Head (Head of Sixth Form, Admissions and Marketing)

22

A DM ISSION R EQUIR EM EN TS Admission to our Sixth Form is not automatic. We expect all our students, both internal and external applicants, to achieve at least six GCSEs at grade 7 or above (or grade A or above) and to meet the subject specific requirements for A Level study which can be found in our Guide to A Level Subjects 2020. Students and parents are welcome to attend the A Level Choices Evening in October to help make decisions about A Level Choices. Scholarships, worth up to half the annual fee, are awarded to external applicants who can demonstrate especially high standards in academic work, sport, music, art or drama. Means tests bursaries are also available from the Whitgift Foundation. For further information please read the section earlier in this guide.

SI X TH FOR M AC A DEM IC ST UDY Our Sixth Form programme of study offers breadth, with students selecting four A Levels in the Lower Sixth. We find that starting with four A Levels enables students to choose for academic breadth, as well as supporting those who are not completely certain as to their final three A level subjects. The majority of our Sixth Formers opt to drop to three A Levels, either after the February half term or by the end of the Lower Sixth year. We do have a significant number of students who will continue with four A levels throughout, with many of these taking Maths and Further Maths, but not all. You are able to read all about the choice of A Level subjects, as well as our advice regarding subject combinations for future careers and further education courses, in our Guide to A Level Subjects 2020. Further academic extension and independent academic investigation is provided through our Sixth Form Diploma programme, where all students will undertake either an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or a Sixth Form Project. The EPQ is the equivalent of an AS Level. Our Sixth Form Diploma programme is timetabled in two double periods a week for the duration of the two years and also involves a programme of enrichment, as well as a commitment to community service, leadership training, employability skills and personal development. All students will be allocated a Diploma and EPQ supervisor to support them in their academic endeavours. You can read more about this on our website.

SPECI A L EDUC ATIONA L NEEDS A ND DISA BILIT Y We will make any reasonable adjustments to the admissions procedure to enable disabled candidates, and applicants with other special needs, to compete for a place at the School without disadvantage. We offer a limited amount of specialist support and also welcome boys with mobility problems – our whole site is equipped for access by wheelchair. Please contact our Admissions office to discuss adjustments you may need to meet your son’s specific needs. If necessary, a meeting will be arranged at school to discuss provision his needs throughout the admissions process and, presuming a successful outcome to the application, during his subsequent time at the school. Whilst we will try to meet the costs of all reasonable adjustments, we reserve the right to charge for additional services. Candidates with special needs may be allowed additional time in the entrance examinations at the discretion of our Director of Admissions. Documentary evidence, such as a current Educational Psychologist’s report, should be submitted to the school, together with the application form. Where necessary, for applicants who have existing statements of special educational needs, a meeting may take place between us and the applicant’s parents prior to the entrance examination and, if appropriate, with the relevant educational authority. All such cases are dealt with on an individual basis, and the purpose of these meetings is to establish whether we best meet the needs of that particular pupil. If awarded a place, boys for whom English is a second language may receive some additional EAL teaching. For SEND students, the following documentation should be submitted upon application: the most recent IEP, EHCP, Educational Psychologist report or medical report (as appropriate). Any further documentation relating to a SEND diagnosis should be submitted if received after the date of application.

The School reserves the right to fix the School fee for a term at any time up to the last day of the preceding term. Every effort will, however, be made to give not less than one term’s notice of alterations to the fees. c. The School reserves the right to review scholarship and bursary awards in the light of changes in a student’s progress, contribution and level of commitment.

The School requires not less than a full term’s notice in writing, received by the Headmaster not later than three days after the beginning of a term, before a student is withdrawn from the School. Failing such notice the full fees for the term following withdrawal will be charged. In the Junior Year the notice period is two terms. c. The School may in its absolute discretion require a parent to remove a student from the School whose attendance, progress or behaviour is unsatisfactory. In such circumstances the parent shall not be entitled to any refund of the fees due or already paid. Nor shall any refund be due for absence due to illness. d.
