02/03 Headmaster’s Introduction
As has been true for many communities, the last few months have tested the school profoundly. Just a year ago, none of us had any idea what lay ahead, and we took for granted a full school - meeting in person, welcoming visitors and shaking hands. While it has been a joy this term to see Trinity full of students and staff again, sadly a return to normality still seems far off as winter approaches. Throughout this time, however, I have felt – and continue to be - extremely proud of the response of the school community, which has been full of optimism, resilience and creativity.

As you can see in the pages of this report, these testing times have also seen generosity from many individuals, and we are fortunate to be surrounded by people who care.

of this is our ambition to enable 1 in every 5 Trinity students to be supported by a bursary within the next 3 years, with these additional bursaries being provided through the Trinity Bursary Fund. This will require £350,000 per year, and I am delighted that through the generousity of nearly 500 donors, we are halfway to this annual target. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this ambition over the last year, not just in financial terms but in gifts of time, expertise and encouragement. In addition, our current parent body, with the support of the Trinity Parents’ Association, raised over £50,000 as part of our Giving Day in June to support other parents who have been affected significantly by the pandemic. This was truly unexpected and heart-warming, and has been appreciated enormously by the families who have received support. During lockdown, our Development team have not dwelt on the many events that have been cancelled, rather they have forged ahead to make the most of the different opportunities that opened for them. I am grateful to them for their ongoing work of building a vibrant and connected digital community, and, with them, I hope that we will be able to gather with you in person again in 2021. Every contribution to the Trinity Bursary Fund reduces socio-economic disadvantage as a barrier to education. There are young people in Shirley and beyond who will make an enormous difference to our school and then to the world beyond when they leave us. I look forward enormously to meeting and working alongside the young men and women whose lives will be changed and empowered by your gifts. Alasdair Kennedy Headmaster

In the face of the pandemic, it might have been understandable for individuals and families in the Trinity community to have turned to home and hearth, rather than reached out to help others. We are, after all, living through the most remarkable and unsettling times most of us can remember firsthand. But this most challenging of years has seen tremendous support for the school’s appeals for assistance.
David Young Director of Development
The positive response to our campaigns this year has seen us reach a point where we have achieved donations to a total value of £200,000, which is 57% of the annual revenue target needed to achieve the Headmaster’s goal of supporting 1 in 5 of Trinity’s students on means-tested bursaries.

Busaries Stories Thompson Twins
Identical twin brothers Nicholas and Daniel Thompson joined Trinity on substantial bursaries in 2007 and left school to take degrees in Maths and Computer Science and Finance, respectively. Bursaries were essential to the Thompson family, enabling Nicholas and Daniel to focus on participating in sports and excelling in their academic studies. This culminated in them both playing football for the ISFA England team and gaining excellent A-level results. “Without bursaries, we would not have been able to attend Trinity and had access to such excellent resources. Not having to worry about money allowed us to take full advantage of the opportunities available, both

As a supervisor at a financial institution, I need to communicate our strategy both internally and to external stakeholders. Being able to speak clearly and coherently is an essential life skill and is a really important aspect of my job.”
WITHOUT BURSARIES, WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND TRINITY AND HAD ACCESS TO SUCH EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITIES.
The Covid crisis has had a massive impact on their working lives. Nicholas says “We both began working last September, but restrictions mean we have now worked longer at home than in the office. At home, we are lucky to have a shared study, the same one where we studied for our A-levels and GCSEs. Although we both miss the social aspects of the office, the flexibility of working from home has allowed us to work harder while making it easier to stay active.” Daniel adds, “We have been very lucky to be able to continue working and developing our careers. Our parents were not so lucky, and we had to contribute much more financially to the household budget over the early Covid period. Luckily, there is now some greater semblance of normality, and both are back at work.” Nicholas has been focusing on improving his technical skills to progress his career as a software engineer in the Financial sector. Daniel hopes to continue working on building his financial knowledge and technical skills to become a financial risk specialist.

06/07 Bursary Story Matt Doherty
Matt, who left Trinity this summer, writes: “Receiving a bursary so that I could go to Trinity has given me the best start in life that anyone could have asked for. My mum was worried that I wouldn’t fit in at my local secondary school, but also that we wouldn’t be able to pay for a private education. However, after looking around Trinity on their open day and finding out more about the life-changing bursary programme offered to students by the John Whitgift Foundation, we knew I had to apply. Throughout the seven years I spent at Trinity, I grew so much as a person and did so many things that I would never otherwise have been able to do. At the forefront of my mind is visiting Malawi in 2019, and how much I appreciated this experience. Equally, I would never have developed my love of sailing, which is something I had never tried before coming to the school. Despite the pandemic disrupting the final months of my time at Trinity, I look back on my seven years there as being stretching, exciting and full of very happy memories.”
Matt is currently studying Geography at Durham University and pays tribute to the support and encouragement of his teachers. “The support I had from my teachers was out of this world. They pushed me in lessons to always strive for my best, giving me the confidence I needed to apply to Durham. Even during the lockdown period, all of them were on hand to help if I needed it, and they continued to provide their amazing academic and pastoral support remotely. The Geography department even put in place various extra-curricular activities for those of us who were applying to continue the subject at university. Having been President of Trinity Geography Society, was an amazing title to put on my UCAS application. The Geography department and the whole of the Sixth Form team massively helped me to reach my goals. Trinity’s teachers are dedicated and professional, but, most importantly, caring – and always have your best interests at heart. Without this deep care that the teachers have for their students, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Despite the continued disruption to normal study practices at university, Matt has settled well into his new course. “Although I’ve only been in Durham for a few weeks now, I am really enjoying the course and the people I am living with. Looking to the future, I would love to study a masters in Geography after my undergraduate degree. Despite not knowing exactly what career path I want to be heading down, there are a few things, I think, that
THROUGHOUT THE SEVEN YEARS I SPENT AT TRINITY, I GREW SO MUCH AS A PERSON AND DID SO MANY THINGS THAT I WOULD NEVER OTHERWISE BEEN ABLE TO DO.
will be an essential part of my future. Volunteering is something that I wish to continue throughout my life – I would love to re-visit Malawi to help over there. The bursary award I received allowed Trinity to give me so much throughout the seven years I was there, and, ultimately, I want to give back to Trinity as much as they have given to me.”

We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the school community during our first ever #1in5 Giving Day on Thursday, 18th June 2020. While the Giving Day had been planned for some time, the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic meant that we had to address, not only the main goal of raising money toward our long-term objective, but also the huge financial impact on our current community of families hit hard by the pandemic through bereavement, illness, unemployment or business failure. With Gift Aid considered, we raised in excess of £115,000 during this campaign: an outstanding achievement for what is still a fledgling fundraising cause. Of the 283 people who participated in this summer’s fundraising, some 216 were first time donors to the Bursary Fund, and we are particularly grateful to the Trinity Parents’ Association, and our network of Trinity ambassadors (named above) for their support and assistance in promoting the Bursary Fund to their peer groups, so widening our body of supporters. The response from the current parent base to the Covid-19 appeal was particularly welcome: some 112 Trinity families gave over £50,000 on the Giving Day to supplement the emergency funding measures already pledged by the John Whitgift Foundation. As a result, 13 students, who would otherwise have had to be withdrawn from school, received temporary bursaries amounting to £45,952 (to date) so that they can continue their education at Trinity. These temporary bursary awards will be continually reassessed and will cease as these families get back on an even keel. Our huge thanks and congratulations to the parent ambassadors who promoted the campaign and led individual challenges to such great effect.

John Whitgift Foundation
The John Whitgift Foundation is proud to widen access to our three schools by offering one of the largest school fee support schemes in the UK. We currently grant over £6 million a year in bursaries to students who attend Old Palace, Trinity and Whitgift. For 424 years, the charity has used land and assets set aside by our Founder to generate income and ensure a lasting legacy for the people our charity supports. We help to build a brighter future for our community. We continue to play a key role in the development and regeneration of Croydon. Indeed, our charitable mission relies upon it: without the rental income we receive as freehold owners of the Whitgift Centre, we would be largely unable to subsidise the care services we offer, or help the thousands of young people we support through an outstanding education. We are proud of the work our charity does. But we want to do more. Each year, based upon our investment income, we will continue to allocate in the order of £2 million to fund bursaries at Trinity. We remain fully committed to funding bursaries at this level. However, as the income we receive from our investments has dropped due to extraordinary local and national conditions, it’s increasingly important we receive the support of our alumni and parents in each school to help raise funding for the additional bursary places that are much-needed, and which cannot be funded centrally. As Chief Finance Officer of the Foundation, and as a current Trinity parent, I am delighted that the Trinity Bursary Fund has been so well supported by the school community this year. Your gifts have helped Trinity to change young people’s lives forever. Together, we are continuing the vision of our Founder, John Whitgift, ensuring that the very best of educations can be made accessible to children from every background and keeping the school at the heart of social mobility in Croydon. Thank you.

12/13 2021 Telephone Campaign
This summer, we will be running our bi-annual telephone fundraising campaign in support of the Trinity Bursary Fund. Two years ago, the Trinity community came together magnificently to commit to funding £120,000 towards new bursaries at Trinity. This year, we hope to sustain the momentum built up over the past 24 months and invite more people to make a regular monthly gift to the Bursary Fund. Regular gifts allow us to plan ahead, ensuring that we can make bursary offers to new students, safe in the knowledge that we can rely upon a stream of cash donations sufficient to cover bursary outgoings for the entirety of a child’s school career. Our emphasis in our telephone campaigns is on broad community participation. Achieving our fundraising goal is something that everyone should feel they can play a part in. Every gift is important and every penny raised will be spent on new bursaries. As before, we will be employing a team of young alumni to take part as telephone callers during the two-week duration of the campaign in late July. Last time we ran the campaign, eight of our twelve callers were themselves recipients of bursaries at Trinity and spoke passionately about how these awards had changed their lives.
