Week ending 15 June 2018 Dear Parents, The Trinity Parent Association (TPA) do a fantastic amount for our school community. Nearly everyone in or around Trinity will already have benefitted in some way from their work, whether at the ball, quiz or proms, through the lost property system, through the work of the class reps, or in their fundraising for charity and for the school. They raise over £10,000 for their chosen charity each year, and thousands more for our Malawi partnership. As one or two of them will stepping down in the next six months, the TPA Committee are looking for parents who would be interested in joining them. In particular we will be looking for a new Chair and Treasurer during next academic year. If you are interested, I warmly invite you to find out more at an informal breakfast on the 4 July at 8:30am at school. Current members of the TPA and I will be there to tell you about the team and answer any questions you may have. The TPA are a very energetic and rewarding group to work with, and you will certainly help shape both events and enduring friendships for yourself and others by being involved. Please let Karen Walsh know if you would like to come at ksw@trinity.croydon.sch.uk I have one very sad piece of news to share: Mrs Maureen Dixon who ran our Community and Charity work passed away last week. She was determined to work at the school for as long as she was able, right up until this month, and she leaves a very important legacy of enabling students to connect with and serve our wider community. Our Mufti day for Charity on 22nd June will be dedicated to the charities that she was particularly passionate about: Cancer Research, St Christopher’s Hospice and neighbourhood care teams. Junior Mathematics Olympiad This year, two boys did exceptionally well in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge, qualifying for the prestigious Junior Mathematics Olympiad. Finlay Evans (Junior Form) and Zain Lam (1P) sat the two hour long exam-style paper which covered short, but thought-provoking questions and included extended questions that pressed them to focus on mathematical reasoning. It is worth mentioning that qualifying for the Olympiad puts Finlay and Zain in the top 1200 in the country for their age range (Juniors through to 2nd form). We look forward to seeing how they got on when the results are published later in July!

Music Trinity Boys’ Choir news Best of luck to three Junior Form boys, Ansh Shetty (JW), Joshua Whittle (JW) and Matteo di Lorenzo (JW), who are acting in Verdi’s Falstaff for Garsington Opera; the first performance is tomorrow, Saturday 16th June. Ansh commented: “I am enjoying meeting some of the worlds best opera singers who are extremely kind and warmhearted. I played the role of Falstaff's Page and we had a lot of fun together, it was an amazing learning experience. I would like to thank Ms Walker and Mr Swinson for giving me this opportunity in the first year of my Trinity journey. I look forward to the upcoming performances.” Matteo said: “The place is amazing, a masterpiece!” Congratulations to the six boys (Aman de Silva (3V), Lucas Rebato (2R), Freddie Jemison (2H), Kiran Patel (2D), Dionysios Sevastakis (2D) and Oliver German (2H), who have been appearing with distinction for Garsington Opera since half term, alternating singing the roles of the Three Boys in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Congratulations also to Nicholas Challier (3M), Harry Daykin (3M), Joshua Todd (3M), William Lewis (2V), Felix Barry-Casademunt (JW), Simeon Wren (JW) and Daniel Todd (JC) who have been performing excellently in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier for the Glyndebourne Opera. In April 2012 the choir gave a performance of contemporary British choral music for choir, organ and percussion, which was recorded by engineers from Bavarian Radio. The main work was Refugium by Trinity’s Composer Fellow, Graham Lack, and new works were also premiered by the young Scottish composer, Tom Harrold, and former Trinity chorister, Richard Wilberforce. This concert has just been released as a live recording CD on the Stone Records label and copies are available from the music office for £10 each. Arts Festival Special Guests! The award-winning German all-female ‘a cappella’ group, Sjaella, is performing in the Arts Festival as part of the Summer Concert on 27th June. The group comprises six young women and they have asked if any families could host them in the Croydon area for two nights; in pairs and they would only require a bed and some breakfast. Please email music@trinity.croydon.sch.uk if you are able to help. New look website This week we are pleased to have launched our new website www.trinity-school.org. We have worked to make it easier to navigate, and to better capture our ethos and more accurately reflect life at Trinity. While our website address remains the same, you may notice some differences in how to navigate to Firefly and Wisepay. Firefly can be accessed via the main menu under ‘Quick Links’ (this also features at the bottom of our homepage). In Firefly you will soon find additional sections that used to be on our website, including uniform information, examination guidance and a dedicated section on our TPA. Wisepay can be accessed from the bottom of the homepage and you can login as normal to make payments. We hope that you enjoy exploring the site and would welcome any feedback you may have as we continue to make improvements. Junior School Ancient Olympic Games This week saw the Juniors take part in their very own Ancient Olympic Games with the Classics department. Athletes from Delphi, Corinth and Sparta competed in events including the javelin, discus and a running race in armour. All the boys took part with gallant sportsmanship worthy of the ancient Greeks and they even swore an oath not to cheat. Well done to this year’s Olympic victors; Sparta! Some photos of this great event can be found on Twitter. Sport Congratulations to Joshua Ellis (3M) who has qualified for the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle at the British Nationals and the 100m freestyle at the English Nationals in Sheffield. He has also been selected to join the Bromley Swimming team for the London Youth Games. TPA Proms - Prombola At our upcoming summer TPA Proms on the 7 July our Malawi Project team will be running a number of stalls in the hope of raising money for Chipwepwete School. A particularly popular stall in the past has been a “Prombola Raffle”, where winners select their prizes from an impressive array of alcoholic or non-alcoholic offerings. We hope you can support the raffle again this year. Any donation would be warmly welcomed – be it a spare bottle of 1986 Chateau Margaux or the latest discount special from your local supermarket – and all funds raised will go to providing free school meals to children in one of the poorest countries in the world. Please take donations to the school office. As Good As New Sale Final reminder that our As Good As New Uniform Sale is tomorrow, Saturday 16 June!
