Headmaster’s Newsletter

Week ending 22 June 2018 Dear Parents, The 2018 Malawi team are just weeks from departure (our third trip) and we are very excited to see our Malawi classroom project (funded by Trinity parents and staff) progressing so well, as you can see from the pictures below. We will also be furnishing the classrooms upon completion.

The team are gathering resources such as chalk, stationery and netball hoops to take out, along with all the Sainsbury’s School Sports equipment we have bought using the vouchers that parents collected last year. This includes primary school level equipment such as tunnels, beanbags, hoops, balls, rockets, stopwatches and playground games. Benny Dembitzer, author of ‘The Famine Next Door’ spoke to the team and our Economics Sixth Form students this week about the need to develop small scale agriculture in Malawi. He is working to link local projects together from across Malawi to share best practice and hopes to feature our project. So far over £15,000 has been raised this year. If parents are able to donate bottles for the TPA Prombola event on 7 July, please bring them to the school office. Find out further information about our Malawi project, and you can also donate to the appeal. Galactic Challenge Last Saturday saw Trinity host its very first Galactic Challenge, a new, slimmed-down version of the UK Space Design Competition aimed specifically at younger students. With Trinity teams involved in the UKSDC since its inception 10 years ago – and national finalists almost every year since – it was an easy decision to run our own event. Students from a number of local primary schools who have participated in our Primary Partnership Programme joined a dozen or so of our Junior Form students to form two ‘Company Teams’, tasked with putting forward their proposals for a Mars research base. Trinity students Felix Barry-Casademunt (JW), Jonathan Brunet (JC), Finlay Evans (JL), Victor Ibberson (JC), Matthew Johnsen (5M), David Onadeko (JW), Dylan Patel (JW), Adhi Sasikumar (JW), Daniel Todd (JC), Adam Wisniewski (JL), Boaz Wong (JC) and Simeon Wren (JW) proved to be not only eager competitors, but also (and more-importantly) excellent collaborators and hosts to our Year 5 visitors, with whom they were inter-mixed. The event also provided an opportunity for some Year 9 students Seb Crabtree (3D), Joel Cuttle (3V), Ted Lockstone (3V), George Ogden (3M), Bashir Olatunji (3M), Anirudha Vikram (3C)and Liam Writer (3C) to act as guides and technical experts. Having themselves taken part in a similar challenge earlier this year, they brought to the day both their event experience and excellent mentoring skills. The teams were overseen by two of our Lower Sixth students, Ellen Wyllie and Julian Bromberg who, as veterans of the senior competition, were company CEOs for this challenge. Their good humour, energy and organisational skills were exemplary. A visitor to the competition remarked: “The children were so enchanting & fabulously clever”. Head of Science & STEM Coordinator Bill Tucker said “I so enjoyed being in their company, observing & listening. It was a privilege to watch them learn and grow in confidence as they worked together. I found it incredible that Ellen and Julian led their teams almost singlehandedly’. Congratulations to all involved for their hard work and for being such excellent ambassadors for the school.

Biology Challenge Our Fourth Form students took part in the Biology Challenge during Science week. This stimulates students’ curiosity for the natural world and encourages them to take an interest in biology outside school. Questions are set on the school curriculum, but the competition also rewards those students whose knowledge of the subject has been increased by reading books and magazines, watching natural history programmes, taking notice of news items of biological interest, and generally being aware of our natural flora and fauna. 48,379 students took the Biology Challenge this year. Only the top 4.7% of students nationally were awarded Gold, with the next 9.1% receiving a Silver award. This compares with 19% and 21% of our entrants, respectively, making it our best results so far.

Performing to a highly appreciative audience, Joel opened the recital with a varied collection of songs by Schubert, Quilter, Schumann and Goldrich, and was followed by Amiri performing Bach and Liszt. Both performers were richly awarded a full standing ovation at the end of what was an excellent and memorable recital. Sport Trinity Rugby Fun Day Sunday 24 June sees the Trinity Rugby Fun Day taking place at the Pavilion. Students can sign up via Wisepay or bring £5 on the day. All family and friends are welcome and do not need to sign up. There will be a multi-age touch tournament; England v Panama live; food and drink stands on offer; inflatables for all ages; and the chance to win some fantastic prizes in our raffle. Cricket The U11s competed in the regional final of the National Cup yesterday. The boys were outstanding in their attitude and play throughout the day, playing the best brand of attacking cricket out of the four teams. They came third on runs difference after winning two games and losing one. A great achievement from them all and thank you to the parents who came to support. Congratulations to Nathan Barnwell (4L) who represented Surrey CCC 2nd X1 against Warwickshire this week. Junior Triathlon Well done to all involved in our Junior Triathlon this week. The boys had a great time and most importantly we are well on our way to raising a significant amount for charity - over £850.60 so far. The charities supported were Cancer Research, Hope4Malawi and RSPCA. A video of the event can be seen HERE. Form Results 1st JC 46 points 2nd JW 59 points 3rd JL 66 points

World Scout Jamboree Congratulations to Henry Weiser (4G) who has been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in July 2019. He is one of 72 young people selected from over 400 applicants in the Greater London South West Region, and is one of only 10 scouts and explorers in Croydon to be selected. Each scout needs to raise £2,000 to enable a scout from a poorer nation also to attend the Jamboree. Henry is training for a two-day, 50mile kayaking challenge down the Thames on 7 & 8 July and would be grateful for any donations to help him reach his target. His fundraising page can be found HERE. Trinity Arts Festival Our fourth annual Trinity Arts Festival got off to a flying start this week, a reminder about some of the events taking place next week: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Some tickets are still available for the outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Here is a taster video the drama department have put together! Tickets available via Wisepay. Summer Concert Hear a guest performance from award-winning German all-female a cappella group, Sjaella in the Concert Hall on Wednesday 27 June.

Trinity Students Go Wild! In recent years the decline in bee populations in the UK has received a lot of media and political attention, due to their pivotal role in agriculture by increasing both the size and quality of farming yields. A government report estimates that pollinators as a whole add £600 million per year to the value of UK crops. Wishing to reverse this decline, a group of Fifth Year students embarked on a project to ‘re-wild’ a small corner of the Trinity grounds with wild flowers. They achieved this by removing the grass, turning over the soil, sprinkling some seeds, letting nature do the rest. The result is a colourful and thriving meadow that will hopefully remain for years to come.

Alumni News Congratulations to former student Imani Lansiquot (who left Trinity in 2016), sprinter and Sky Sports Scholar, who has run her second-fastest time to date with a 100m new season’s best of 11.24 seconds. Despite having to balance revision and exams with training, Imani was “super happy” to leave Regensburg, Germany, with a new season’s best. Imani captained the Great Britain team at the World under 20 Championships in 2016 and is the second-fastest British junior of all time. Imani is committed to her ambition of inspiring young women and shows there is “more to life than where you are from, or your background”. We wish Imani all the best and look forward to seeing what more she has in store this summer! Congratulations to Sixth Former Elliot Lilley who has been selected to join the school leaver scheme at Fairstone Financial Management in the City. They felt he had the perfect combination of enthusiasm, self motivation and proven team work ethic (from his extensive cricket career). Elliot will be working alongside one of the Fairstone private wealth advisers and combining his day to day responsibilities with training for professional qualifications. Elliot is delighted to be joining this buoyant industry. TPA Proms Summer has arrived and the TPA Trinity Proms is only three weeks away.
