Art and Photography

Design and Technology

The course in Art & Photography has been designed to give students flexibility and choice in their project work and aims to provide a solid foundation for studying either GCSE Fine Art or GCSE Photography. The contents of each lesson are created to develop abilities in both Art and Photography with students being made aware of the contents and requirements of both GCSE disciplines.

The Third Year course challenges students to develop a more mature and sophisticated approach to design through the analysis of existing products and needs, to the synthesis of original designs and the realisation of effective working products.

Studying creativity provides a balance between the development of practical skills and critical thinking. Students will be expected to experiment and explore art and photography from different cultures and times. Activities will include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, photomontage, and video. The Department benefits from superb facilities which include a large traditional darkroom, a TV and photography studio with editing suite, a ceramics studio and a suite of Mac and PC workstations together with a range of image manipulation and editing software. The course provides a good base for studying either Art or Photography at GCSE and A Level or it may be undertaken as an interesting option in its own right.

Computer Science Third Year Computer Science sees students develop their skills in programming as well as their knowledge of how computers work. This course will place practical activities within a theoretical framework that will underpin an understanding of why hardware and software are designed in specific ways. Students will learn established academic theories of computational thinking to emphasise the links between abstract concepts and concrete outcomes. The course is aimed to be a primer for further study at GCSE and includes a significant amount of mathematical and logical elements. Students will work individually, in groups, and for some of the coding exercises in programming pairs, mirroring professional practice. Students will have access to virtual platforms for additional learning of coding in their own time which allows them to extend their knowledge beyond the syllabus.

Units include Hardware

Students will learn processor fundamentals and how different hardware, that make up a computer system, function. Students will learn about logic gates and how they are used to implement Boolean logic. Students will gain an excellent grounding in the relationship between hardware and data.

Programming in Python and GML

Python is a freely available high-level programming language. Using Python, students will construct a range of programs individually and in pairs, as well as learning how to design a program and evaluate it. They will also apply GameMaker Language to program a computer game using object orientated programming.

Data Representation

Students will understand hexadecimal, denary and binary conversion and their uses. Students will learn how data is used to represent images and sound. They will learn about how compression is performed and the different types of compression.

Students develop their knowledge of materials and processes so that they can work safely and efficiently. Care is taken to ensure that direct entrants into Third Year are not disadvantaged. The emphasis is on gaining an understanding of the importance of product design in the modern world and the value of the design process in structuring thought, planning and executing work. Students will work on one project this year based on the Design Brief ‘Investigate a situation where a client, of your choice, may require a low voltage lamp. Design and make a working prototype that satisfies the client needs’ Responses to the design brief in the past have ranged from desk lamps to a light to use whilst running. Throughout the project, students strengthen their research, graphics and presentation skills as well as developing a structured way of working which will support their other subjects. The course provides an excellent foundation for those considering studying Design and Technology at GCSE as well as those that would like to develop the skills they have learnt in previous years.

Drama The Third Year course builds on skills and dramatic techniques learnt in the first three years at Trinity, helping students develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. It also acts as a preview to the GCSE course, preparing students who wish to take the subject further for the demands of learning about practitioners, devising and scripted performance. Third Year students will undertake a combination of written and practical, group and independent work, and the focus is on helping them build analytical and reflective skills in a creative and dynamic environment. This is achieved by students creating their own original theatre inspired by a range of stimuli, including socio-political issues and current affairs, and practically exploring existing scripts to develop empathy and understanding. In lessons, students will expand their understanding of how to practically apply a wide range of vocal and physical acting skills, as well as directing their peers and exploring lighting, set and sound design with our specialist Theatre technicians. Students also get the opportunity to watch and analyse live theatre, learning how to evaluate the aims and strengths of the acting and production team. We use a combination of trips and subscriptions to online platforms to access a range of professional productions which students use to inform their own practical work. Highlights in recent years have included the critically acclaimed National Theatre productions of ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ but we plan to return to the usual routine of visiting the West End to review the wonderful ‘Woman in Black’.

Music

Classical Greek

Music in the Third Year is project based and focuses on the three key musical skills of composing, performing and listening. We use a variety of resources to write and perform music whilst studying different genres from around the world. You will look at Protest Music, Dance Music and The Romantic Period amongst others. ICT plays an important part in the project-based work, and programs such as ‘Sibelius’, ‘NoteFlight, and ‘BandLab’ are used as much as possible during the creative process. There will be an opportunity for solo and ensemble performing as well as listening and analysis of pieces from different genres.

(as an additional subject outside the timetable)

Each element of the course includes differentiated tasks so that all boys of a range of musical ability can make as much progress as possible as well as reach high standards. All boys who enjoy performing, composing or listening to music are encouraged to consider this option and any boy considering taking GCSE Music should certainly do so. To gain the most from this course and be able to participate fully in the various group activities in lessons, boys should be able to perform on an instrument or voice and have a good working knowledge of staff notation.

Latin In the Third Year, pupils continue to use the Suburani Course, set in the time of the Emperor Nero in the 60s CE. At this level pupils can enjoy the increasing challenge of the language, and the rigorous intellectual activity involved in translation, including English into Latin; this helps to develop such skills as logic and flexibility. Through it they can continue to gain a greater understanding of the English language, and its links with other European languages, with the focus on derivations. Regular use is made of such learning tools as the online activities on the Suburani website, Blooket, and Kahoot. They also have the opportunity to explore the cultural background and thus the roots of western civilisation. This year the course is set in the ancient town of Pompeii, and students cover various topics relating to Roman history and culture, including: marriage and the relationship between husbands and wives, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Roman citizens and freedmen, different gods and beliefs about the afterlife, gladiators, Hannibal, Roman fashion and the relationship between Africa and Rome. The course provides the necessary groundwork for proceeding to the GCSE course in the Fourth and Fifth Years.

We start with learning the new alphabet and then move onto the basics of the language. The study of Greek opens the door to an appreciation of the origin of many words in English and other modern European Languages, especially more technical and sophisticated words; this leads to a more enriched appreciation of these languages. The study of Latin will be a considerable help in learning classical Greek, as the two languages share many features and complement each other. Furthermore, classical Greek culture is at the heart of Western civilisation in so many areas, ranging from literature and history to maths and science. In the Third Year we explore the epic story of the Iliad by Homer, which leads into the study of literature at GCSE, and has influenced many later writers. This option is usually only available to those who choose to continue with Latin. Teaching takes place during two sessions each week: one during a lunchtime break from 1.40 – 2.15pm, and a second session from 4.00 – 5.00pm on a different day. There is no extra charge for these lessons. This course is demanding of the boys’ time and is really only suitable for those boys who are performing strongly in Latin and are coping easily with the demands of all their other subjects and extra-curricular commitments. The intention is for the course to lead onto a two-year GCSE course for those stimulated by the Third Year course.
