TRINIT Y SCHOOL PROSPECTUS

W ELCOM E TO TR INIT Y We are delighted that you are considering Trinity for your child. What drives us at Trinity is not just what students achieve whilst they are here, but what and who they become when they leave us. We have fostered a welcoming, diverse and friendly community in which our students feel cared for and supported. From that, I am confident that they will be able to thrive academically and will respond well to being stretched and challenged in the classroom. Our students have achieved some of the best academic results in the country, but are also actively encouraged to take up the wealth of opportunities we offer outside the classroom. We are proud to play an active role in our local community and be a part of Croydon’s rich history and thriving future.

My commitment to every Trinity student is that they will acquire new knowledge, skills and interests, as well as a strong set of values so that, when they leave Trinity, you can be proud of your child’s achievements and be delighted by the sort of person they have become. I would very much like to welcome you to the School so you can experience for yourself the spirit of Trinity and its warm, purposeful atmosphere.

OUR VA LUES Our vision is centred on our students. What kind of young people will they become, what will they achieve and, perhaps most importantly, what will they choose to do to make a positive impact on the world when they leave us? We are ambitious for our students to make a difference to the world, and we want to give them the experiences that will promote the personal qualities, the qualifications and the self-confidence to believe that they can.

Such a lovely, friendly school and great kids. So much sport, great academics and brilliant ethos. Really proud to be part of the wider Trinity community. Parent

Our students will leave Trinity without any sense of entitlement, ready to enter and contribute well to all kinds of communities with the humility that acknowledges there is always more to learn.

We open doors for our students to the world’s best universities, colleges and careers, and equally they learn the skills and responsibility to care for others.

C ARING DEEPLY

At the heart of our work there are four values that are key to our ethos, enabling our students both to thrive in their time at school and to become the young people we hope they will be.

OUTSTANDING LEARNING

Every individual must feel known and supported in our school community;

Our teachers are outstanding and our curriculum is challenging;

JOINING IN Participation and excellence matter equally, across a rich array of activities;

LOOKING OUT WARDS We are committed to our students engaging meaningfully with the world beyond school.

OUR COM MUNIT Y There is a sense in which Trinity is a real standard-bearer: its students leave school with a respect and appetite for learning. Good Schools Guide 2018

Being part of Trinity is more than just about time at school. Studying here is just the beginning of a lifelong journey for our students and their friends and families. We hope that as they go out into the world of higher education and the workplace our alumni will remain in contact with the School and its community. Equally, we encourage and welcome parents of our former students, as well as local residents and our partners, to participate fully in the life of the School.

We are very happy to see our son coming home and being excited and positive about his day at school and what he has learned. The school has been as welcoming and friendly as we had hoped. Parent

OUR HISTORY Trinity is one of three independent schools in the Whitgift Foundation, a registered charity offering one of the largest bursary schemes in the UK. Alongside Whitgift and Old Palace, our commitment is to provide an all-round education to academically able children, regardless of their social background or financial means.

Fast forward to the nineteenth century, and Archbishop John Whitgift’s legacy continued with the development of Whitgift Middle School. By the early twentieth century, it was decided to build two schools, which were to be known as Whitgift School (located at Haling Park) and Whitgift Middle School, based in Croydon’s North End.

In 1596 Archbishop John Whitgift was granted permission from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a Foundation in Croydon, providing education for the young and care for the elderly. Shortly after approval was given, the foundation stones for the Hospital of The Holy Trinity (the Almshouses) and a nearby school were laid.

William Ingrams was Whitgift Middle School’s first Headmaster, who ensured that the School’s fee level remained accessible to all sectors of society. Oliver Berthoud changed the School’s name in 1954 to Trinity School of John Whitgift.

C A R ING DEEPLY Young people grow best when they feel safe and free to express themselves. We are proud of our reputation for providing outstanding pastoral care and, in the last two years, 100% of our new parents said we achieve this. Pastoral care at Trinity is delivered through our Form Tutors, Heads of Year, Head of Lower and Middle Schools, Head of Sixth Form, and our Deputy Head of Pastoral. All our students receive carefully considered support and advice at each stage of their school career, tailored to their particular needs and circumstances. As a result, our students know they can talk to a member of staff if they are worried, that there are people around them who care about them, and how to seek help if they need it.

Every student goes on a unique learning journey, so we provide the environment within which they have the opportunity to develop an enthusiasm and dedication to each subject they study. We want our students to feel challenged, but know that they are well-supported by our teaching staff and are guided on where best to focus their efforts to improve. Our students are encouraged to problem solve, and apply their knowledge to different situations, in preparation for A Level study and beyond.

Our students frequently seek out opportunities to go beyond the curriculum and extend their learning, whether that be hearing visiting speakers, going to industry conferences and residential courses, or taking on the Extended Project Qualification. Our academic societies, part of our co-curricular provision, are also very well-attended and see our students raise topics of interest for discussion and debate.

In developing a well-rounded, intellectually curious profile that includes both academic and co-curricular pursuits, our students develop an excellent foundation from which they confidently go into higher education and beyond. Our students are actively encouraged to seek out ways in which they can apply the knowledge they have learnt in the classroom to a wider context. Whether it be through competitions, group challenges, essay prizes, trips, visiting speakers or additional workshops, we support them in becoming confident in asking questions about the wider world and developing independent thought.

LIFE IN THE SI X TH FOR M Sixth Form can be the most enjoyable part of your time at school: you can concentrate on the subjects that interest you most, have more freedom to plan your time, and have many more opportunities for leadership. During your time in the Sixth Form at Trinity you will take greater ownership of your learning and progress, developing into an independent learner who achieves the very best possible in both your academic and co-curricular pursuits. You will have the chance to take up new opportunities, developing your intellectual and cultural interests, and broadening your horizons.

Trinity was recommended to us, without hesitation, by past parents and we will, in turn, enjoy strongly recommending the school to prospective future parents. Parent

As a co-educational Sixth Form you will have the opportunity to make new friends and prepare for life beyond school, either in higher education or the world of work. As a senior member of the School you will become a role model and mentor for our younger students. You will develop

leadership skills in many areas of school life, bringing enthusiasm for co-curricular activities to inspire others. Of course, we know that your priority will be the subjects you have chosen to study. You may already have a good idea what you want to do when you finish school and have chosen subjects with that in mind, or you have chosen the subjects you find most rewarding. Either way, we know that you will leave Trinity after two enjoyable, and challenging years, more than prepared for Higher Education and life beyond.

JOINING IN We give our students the confidence and skills needed to be happy and successful, both while they are with us and throughout their lives. To complement learning, we work with students to develop a sense of adventure, as well as cultural and social awareness. We have many and societies, often run by the pupils themselves, to satisfy a wide range of interests such as sub-aqua, ecology, creative writing, chess and Trinity Racing, where pupils design, build and race their own cars.

We have our own, dedicated outdoor centre in the Brecon Beacons, where students stay for trips and DofE. The Boetius Centre is perfectly situated for hill walking and navigation, climbing and abseiling, and gorge walking and caving. Located right on the south-western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the village of Coelbren, the centre is close to the wonderful walking areas of the Black Mountains and some of the most spectacular waterfalls and caves in Britain.

It has been everything that my son needed, and more. He loves getting involved in all the extracurricular activities and seems to have boundless energy. Parent

SPORT Through sport at Trinity our pupils build character and develop qualities that will serve them well in future life. They learn how to be resilient, how to persevere when the odds are against them, and how to show humility when the game is won. Whatever their aptitude or ability we provide pupils with the opportunity to achieve something worthwhile in sport, and every pupil has the opportunity to represent their school. We are proud of our outstanding reputation for sport, and are delighted to offer a wide range of activities and opportunities for all. We have excellent facilities on site including extensive sports fields, 2 astros, 2 sports halls, a swimming pool, 10 tennis courts, 4 squash courts, a climbing wall, a shooting range, a health and fitness suite, a strength and conditioning room as well as further fields at our Sandilands site and a pavilion as a centre point of our sport.

TRINIT Y BOYS CHOIR Our internationally-acclaimed Trinity Boys Choir has enjoyed a high professional profile, both at home and abroad, for over fifty years. In the world of opera, the boys appear on such prestigious stages as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, English National Opera, as well as opera houses abroad, including La Monnaie (Brussels), La Scala (Milan), La Fenice (Venice), and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. The choir has been singing at Glyndebourne for over 35 years, and it was in recognition of this that we were honoured to present our 50 Year Celebration Concert in their world-famous auditorium.

LOOK ING OU T WA R DS Our students play an active role in their local community, and we believe their doing so is central in preparation for making a meaningful contribution to whichever field they enter when they leave Trinity. Students fundraise for their chosen charitable causes each term, lead lessons at local primary schools, visit local residential homes and host events for members of our local community throughout the year. In 2015, in partnership with Hope4Malawi, we made a commitment to provide lunch daily for every child at Chipwepwete School. The school hosts over 600 students and is growing, following the success of the feeding program. We regularly make trips out to Malawi, where our Sixth Form team see first-hand how the programme impacts the lives of children and to take an active role in contributing to their education. By playing an active role within our local community and beyond, our students have an enhanced awareness of the needs of others and cultivate a sense of service.

OUR TOWN As one of the three schools within the Whitgift Foundation, Trinity has been part of Croydon’s history for hundreds of years. The dawn of a new chapter in its history has begun; with the emergence of a start-up technology community, a flourishing arts and cultural scene, and the regeneration of its town centre, Croydon’s future is bright. We benefit from our location by both being in close proximity to wellestablished rail, bus and tram routes and being able to be a part of the exciting developments taking place in Croydon. Our students have had their artwork exhibited at local galleries; taken part in music performances in Box Park, and interacted with local business leaders. With both technology start-up and multinational businesses moving to Croydon, studying here has never felt more exciting and we are proud to be part of Croydon’s rich history and thriving future.
