Quest
The brief was to create a promotional brochure for a decorating and painting company. I chose to this brief because I’m interested in layout design and print.
The client not sure on what he wanted I put together a mock up and sent it by post. After viewing this the client was happy with the work and agreed to take it into production on a glossy stock. However the client and I haven’t yet discussed production of the brochure.

Whilst making the mock up I discovered considerations to have in mind when bookbinding that I didn’t know before. Overall this brief gave me the experience of working with a client located in a different location and the chance to develop my design skills.
Since designing this brochure the client has contacted me again to make signs for the business.

Promotional pack: Jessica
A brief I received with short notice was to design a promotional pack for a student on the printed textiles course. I took on the brief as it involved branding. I met with the student and discussed ideas and possible deliverables for the pack. I had only a few days to put together the pack and get it printed for the students hand in. This was a downfall as this short time period limited me in what could be produced.
Overall the outcomes were what the student wanted and was produced on time. This brief helped me improve my time management skills and my relationship with clients.

Promotional pack: Sophie
After receiving the first brief to design a promotional pack for a printed textiles student another student approached me to design hers too. All though limited for time I decided to take on this brief as well to help develop my personal practice. This brief required more deliverables than the other one, therefore more preparation was needed to send everything to print. I discussed with the student the variety of stocks that could be used, doing so made me understand more what type of design was wanted.
Talking with the student regularly on the ongoing brief made it easier to produce the final outcomes to what the brief required.

Promotional pack: Kate A third promotion pack I did for another student on the printed textiles course at university. Being very similar to the other packs I was doing I was familiar with the brief and what type of deliverables were wanted. But as with the other packs I was limited for time only having one day to design and get the final outcomes ready for print.

After having designed three promotional packs with limited time I learnt my abilities to respond quickly to a brief. I also learnt more about colour and the different ways to prepare documents for print.
Psicodelic Custom Logo
Whilst in Spain a friend who has his own clothing brand asked me if I could create a new logo for him. This was a short brief and was one of my first pieces of design for a client.
From the start good communication was kept between the client and I discussing different ideas and approaches. This had a benefit for the final outcome because a clear idea had been discussed. Overall I think that the final designs were suitable for the already existing brand and were what the client wanted.

This brief was chosen by Bobby Jones and I for the collaborative project. We chose this brief because it required deliverables from areas of design we both liked, packaging and branding. I realised that working in the collaborative made me more motivated and helped me with my time management skills. The brief was challenging at first because we had to establish a name for the brand but once this was done we made quick progress in creating initial designs and mock ups.

Working on a competition brief made me more aware of the design world and what the requirements are in the industry. The work I produced in response to this brief shows my development from first year to second year. Showing a better understanding of how to apply the principles of design. Overall I think this brief was a success because of the final outcome and the skills learnt during the collaborative.

Evaluation
Throughout this module I have developed new skills and developed further ones I already possessed. Existing skills I developed further were the use of grids, font selection, the use of type and image together, layout development and the use of photoshop. New skills I learnt were the relationship between clients and designers and managing independent work and briefs. I applied my existing skills to start the development of the briefs and through research and ongoing designing I developed them further.
When approaching the design production I used a variety of methods and software to create the final outcomes for each brief. I developed my own professional practice in this module by using software in a professional way and keeping files organized. As for methods I developed further book binding skills, packaging production and print preparation.

In my work I identify strengths in layout and use of type. I will capitalise on these by developing them further with ongoing research into grids and type. The weaknesses I identify in my work are the use of image and type together, defining the audience, research and time management. In the future I will address these by making more action plans at the start of each brief, this way it will be easier for me to develop more appropriate outcomes.
What would I do differently ? Time Management: I would plan my time better to benefit my own development of the brief. Research: Produce more research in order to stimulate more ideas and possible outcomes for the chosen brief. Development Work: More thumbnails, sketches and development in general to help me in deciding the final design. Blogger: Not to leave blogging to the end, this way the work load would be easier to manage. Stock: Research more in to different types of stock, so for future briefs I would have a better knowledge of the type of stock that would be appropriate for that brief.
