“It is one thing to have exceptional architectural design which supports the intent of the users of a building. [Trivers’] work on the Kentucky College of Optometry has done nothing short of have a profound effect on the entire program.” Dr. Andrew Buzzelli, OD, MS University of Pikeville Vice President for Optometric Education Founding Dean, Kentucky College of Optometry

university of pikeville health professions education building 107,000 sqft The coal industry has long been synonymous with Central Appalachia. With global energy shifting away from fossil fuels, the University recognized the need for high-quality education to allow success beyond the heart of coal country and into a new health and technology economy competitive in the 21st century. The Health Professions Education Building is a symbol for this beacon of mobility that education offers and emblematic of the prominence the University provides central Appalachia. Housing a new College of Optometry and adjoining School of Nursing, the facility allows for interdisciplinary collaboration, state-of-the-art active learning classrooms, and optometry labs that set a new national standard. Educational components are paired with shared food service and dining spaces, capped by a multi-use pavilion, a signature space with commanding views to the Appalachian Mountains.
Perched on a nearly 45-degree slope, the building massing and organization were derived with three bars of program: public, education, and collaboration, unified by a common core. Working with two prevalent approaches with mountain topography, the building works both with the hillside, yet deifies the slope, an indication of human’s approach to conquer difficult terrain for the built environment. The envelope melds the naturalistic materials and Appalachian color palette, reinforcing the building’s use as a school of optometry by using “layers of clarity” to and from inside the building to its surroundings. This combination of program, massing, and materials creates a rich, contextual, and modern beacon for the youth of Appalachia.

washington university bryan hall renovation 49,000 SF Washington University in St. Louis selected the Ayers Saint Gross-Trivers team for the first phase of the Integrated Science Initiative, a multiphase master plan that begins with addressing the needs of chemistry and physics. The project transformed Bryan Hall into a premier chemistry research facility for synthetic, instrument-based, nuclear, and radio chemistry. The existing central corridor on each level was relocated to the north side of each floor to create flexible lab layouts and create day-lit corridors and collaboration space. Glass overlaid with a terracotta fin “screen” replaces a stone wall on the north façade, allowing daylight into the adjacent spaces and providing wonderful views. To upgrade the aesthetic appeal and bring them into compliance with campus circulation and accessibility standards, Ayers Saint Gross replaced the Forest Park Parkway pedestrian bridge and Millstone Plaza, both located adjacent to Bryan Hall. The project also included a new campus entrance from the north to provide an accessible path from newly developed off student housing into the heart of the Danforth Campus.
central methodist university stedman science building renovation 49,000 sqft Stedman Hall of Science, built in 1963, is located at the eastern edge of the academic quad on Central Methodist University’s campus. As buildings were added and occupancies changed, Stedman Hall became one of the main pedestrian thoroughfares connecting the new Student & Community Center with the Library. Although many students and visitors pass through the 2nd floor corridor, the building’s original design provided little to no opportunity for interaction. Lack of flexibility, from the teaching spaces to the static display cases, as well as outdated systems and technology was an ongoing frustration conveyed by the faculty. Trivers was selected for the project based on the provocative concept of reorienting the entry sequence and proposal of a new pedestrian bridge at the 2nd floor, creating a new “front door”. Spatial re-organization of the building’s program allows for a large collaboration space at the new entry, acting as the heart of the building and providing flexibility for day to day interaction as well as science fair exhibit space. On the remaining floors, smaller breakout spaces are carved out of the corridors.
In addressing the client’s desire for new life and connection to its visitors, a concept of erosion and permeation of spaces was explored. Strategic placement of glazing at labs and classrooms invite outsiders to visually interact with experiments. Modes of interaction, from public to private, are emphasized through the layering of spaces, materiality, and levels of transparency. Through design research and collaboration with faculty members, ways of redefining the classroom and providing flexibility for many years to come on a limited budget were incorporated. These methods ranged in design decisions as simple as providing at least two “front of classrooms” in every space to implementing movable furniture and digital displays. The renovation of Stedman Hall of Science has reintroduced the building as an integral part of campus as originally intended, and created a space for learning that supports and advances Central Methodist’s science education in the 21st century.

washington university january hall 22,650 SF The Jamieson and Spearl designed January Hall served as the Washington University Law School from its construction in 1922 through the early 1970s. The wood paneled reading room, with its vaulted ceiling and exposed wood trusses, now serves as the home of the East Asian Library with multiple offices and classrooms on the lower two floors. Trivers analyzed the existing conditions of the building with respect to code compliance, accessibility and physical condition. Building systems and utilities were analyzed for performance, condition, and service life, along with a building energy analysis for upgrade recommendations. The envelope was also studied and a condition assessment provided with attention paid to the cleaning and repair of the stone facades and options for repairing and/or replacement of the historic windows and doors.
Additionally Trivers performed a survey of the roof condition and expected service life. Based on all of these findings, a report was assembled that documented the conditions and proposed potential solutions. Options for corrective measures were outlined for further discussion with the University, including cost opinions with a goal to determine the scope of work needed to bring the building to the University’s standard. A final scope document was provided with the all of the analysis included as an appendix for the University to use for long-range planning and to allocate funding. After completing the study, Trivers led the renovation efforts, completing the project in 2018. January Hall received LEED Platinum certification for its green building practices, commitment to environmental responsibility and overall sustainability.

washington university umrath hall 28,500 SF (renovation) | $12.5 M Designed in 1902 by Cope & Stewardson as a dormitory to house workers of the 1904 World’s Fair, Umrath Hall is one of the most important historic structures on campus. The building’s low floor-to-floor heights and extensive bearing walls throughout prevented conversion to current standards of academic use. The renovation re-envisions the historic structure by creating a new building within. Two vertical light shafts on either side of the building’s iconic central tower were inserted, permitting natural light to enter the building and define a new building entrance lobby. By removing the roof structure and demolishing the second floor and all bearing walls, floor-tofloor heights were increased and flexible classroom and academic space were created. Perhaps most technically challenging was the insertion of the new structural steel framing within the historic shell while supporting the massive exterior masonry walls and the central tower. The result is a powerful and proud example of how a historic building can insure its relevancy in modern society while preserving a rich historic façade.
southern illinois university - edwardsville art + design building 29,000 SF (addition) | 47,000 SF (renovation) | $14 M In an effort to create a unified facility for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville College of Arts & Science, Art and Design Department’s disciplines and satisfy the needs of enhanced space and expanded program, Trivers was selected to program and design a new addition in conjunction with the renovation of the existing 1991 facility. Sited directly to the west of the existing building, the addition is composed of two masses, evoking the limestone cliffs that the campus is built upon, shaped by the pedestrian flow of the student body. Both masses will sit on a red brick base that is consistent with the university’s architecture. The addition allows for an expanded gallery that is nestled along a pedestrian path. The glass-walled gallery will engage the passersby in the art displays and draw them in to the space. The gallery is sited at the terminus of the main axis of the complex, flanked on either side by art studios. This orientation denotes a clear organization and symbolizes the culmination of the artistic process for display. Furthermore, the second level drawing and painting studios with orientation to northern light, and the integration of an auditorium and lecture hall, also contribute to the much needed programmatic space. With the addition absorbing much of the program shift, the existing building is reconfigured for expanded studios and critique spaces that enliven the circulation paths, and create centralized zones for student gathering and interaction. The end result will be a facility that hopes to attract and retain the most creative minds, building upon the already strong success of SIUE’s Art and Design program.
