Message Mayor Tammy Burke Town of Rocky Mountain

from the Mayor

It is my pleasure to introduce the 2021/2022 Fall-Winter Program Guide for the Town of Rocky Mountain House and area. Town facilities have reopened to the public, and we are so pleased to see a full slate of programs on offer both from the Recreation & Community Services department and the many wonderful community organizations that serve adults, youth and families from our region. On behalf of Town of Rocky Mountain House Council, I extend my gratitude to the volunteers and partners who bring so much choice in recreation to our community. The past 18 months have challenged us in many ways, but we have come through it so far together. Despite the COVID-19 pause of recreation programming and the cancellation of many beloved events, we still found ways to make good memories in our community. In 2021 we celebrated the Grand Openings of the Spray Park and the North Saskatchewan River Park covered grandstands. We hosted 10 Marketplaces on Main, and you came out in droves to congratulate the 2021 high school graduates. We must continue to practice kindness and compassion as we resume our favourite activities. Please follow the public health guidance designed to keep us all safe and help us avoid further disruption to recreation and events. While you take part in community recreation this season please take a moment to notice the land acknowledgement on display at each Town facility: The Town of Rocky Mountain House acknowledges that the land on which we gather is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional home and meeting ground for many Indigenous Peoples including the Blackfoot, Saulteaux, Cree, Stoney and Métis. On June 21, we raised Treaty 6 and Métis flags at the Town Office. This is a public and permanent recognition of the historical and current contributions to our community by the First Nation and Métis people, and demonstrates our commitment to reconciliation. Please join us in building a community where everyone feels safe, welcome and valued. Finally, I want to congratulate the staff of the Credit Union Co-op Aquatic Centre for earning the Anne Resek Swim for Life® Award from the Lifesaving Society. This award recognizes the aquatic centre as one of the top pools for delivering Swim for Life programs, and most importantly means area residents are getting all the drowning and injury-prevention education and skills they need to stay safe around water. Our community is vibrant and active year-round. I encourage you to get out and try something new. Rocky Mountain House is truly where adventure begins, and I wish you a healthy, happy season ahead.
