BUDLEIGH DIARY JAN TO MAR 2014
Editor’s Letter Welcome to the NEW winter edition of the Budeigh Diary. Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding area is renowned for it’s friendly atmosphere and great community spirit. We are introducing a ‘NEW’ feature in this issue called ‘The Budleigh Diary Community Interview’ in which we visit local people across the Lower Otter Valley. In this issue we meet the Salterton Drama Club at the Playhouse Theatre. If you would like to feature in the next issue or know someone who would we’d love to hear from you. If you are not yet aware, there’s been a fundamental change to the Budleigh Diary that means every organisation, be it a club, society, charity, business, etc, can get their events into the next issue of the magazine in an easy, transparent way, so that the Budleigh Diary is exactly that - a diary of all events for the Budleigh Salterton area. For instance, at the start of the events section in this issue, you can see local events in chronological order. This is then followed by East Devon events. How do I get my organisation’s events into the next issue you may ask? It’s extremely easy, just go to the eastdevonhub.co.uk website
and login as your organisation and then add your events, it’s that easy. What’s great is that you can get your organisation’s events on the Hub and also in The Budleigh Diary through this single, easy process. At the last count, there were 78 organisations (clubs, societies & charities) already registered on the East Devon Hub in the Budleigh, East Budleigh, Yettington and Otterton area. This service is totally free to use and available 24/7. If your organisation isn’t registered, just Google East Devon Hub, then go to the register menu option, fill out the form and submit. We’ll let you know when you’re all set up to add events. Get fit and earn money! We are on the lookout for distributors to help us deliver the Diary magazines to houses and businesses across the Sid Valley and Lower Otter Valley. If you are interested or know anyone who might be then give us a call. Happy New Year for 2014. J. Ingles Cover picture: The Otter Valley by N. Jones

Local historian Ted Gosling looks back in time The Philpots and Mary Anning by Ted Gosling
For the majority of people who visit the West Country the image of Lyme Regis is conjured up by two ladies. Meryl Streep standing on the windswept Cobb, when she gave that memorable performance as Sarah Woodruff in the film “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, is one. The other, of course, is Mary Anning wearing her bonnet, with a basket under her arm, collecting fossils. Miss Anning (1799-1847), the fossil woman, lived in Broad Street and was the eldest child of Richard Anning, a carpenter and Dissenter of Lyme Regis. Although she made many important discoveries and helped her brother in the digging out of the first complete ichthyosaur, it would be stretching our imagination to call her one of the first women scientists; a title given to her in recent months. About this time both well-known and obscure fossil collectors visited Lyme Regis and, although many of them found their main attraction in the fossil shop of Mary Anning and her mother, there were many others for whom the first interest was to examine the fossil collection or museum belonging to the Miss Philpots. Who were these Philpots? A familiar name to our museum Geologist, Geoff Marshall, but I suspect a complete mystery to those of you brought up with the romantic story of Mary Anning. John Philpot was a solicitor practising in London. In about 1805 he took a house at Lyme Regis for his four sisters. Three of them, Mary (1777-1838), Margaret (?-1845) and Elizabeth (1780-1857), settled there for life at Marley Cottage, number 1 Silver Street, which is now the Mariners Hotel. They soon began collecting fossils, and the youngest of the sisters, Elizabeth became the expert in this field. The sisters also took on a young protégée who was one day, rather unfairly, to become much more

celebrated than they were. This was, of course, local girl Mary Anning and, although the achievements of Miss Anning in her own right are remarkable, it was the Philpot sisters, which shrewdness and patience, formed a collection of local fossils that became famous throughout Europe and is now one of the pride of the Oxford University collection. The Philpots moved in a small circle of intelligent geologists who came to visit Lyme Regis at the time. To present day geologists they read like a Roll of Honour: Rev William Conybeare (1787-1857): James Sowerby, famous for his books ‘Mineral Conchology and British Mineralogy; a book now fetching in excess of £6000 in book auctions: Professor William Buckland (1784-1856), born at Axminster, who wrote a prize-winning paper for the Royal Society

and published in book form as ‘Reiquiae Diluvianae’; Professor Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1801-1873); Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871); Professor Adam Sedgewich (1785-1873); Sir Charles Lyell (17961875); Henry Thomas De La Beche (pronounced Beach), and many others visited the town. I wonder what they would have thought of the claims to be the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, from every town from Exmouth to Swanage.
The fossil collection of the Miss Philpots consists of about 400 specimens, mainly from the Lower Lias of Lyme and Charmouth. It was compiled during the first part of the 19th century during which time it was studied by the various prominent paleontologists. On the death of the youngest sister, Elizabeth Philpot, the collection passed to a nephew, John Philpot and in 1880 it was presented to Oxford University by his widow.
Buckland, known for his humour and eccentricity, would have remarked; ‘What a load of coprolites, most of these claimants do not know the difference between an ammonite and a belemnite’.
Although the Philpots were the most important and should be given precedence in terms of strict science, do remember that Mary Anning, a local girl of humble background and education, became one of the finest field searchers of the time.

Of the other image; Meryl Streep? Well although John Fowles the author of ‘French Lieutenant’s Woman’ lived in Lyme, film fame is momentary and by the 22nd century she will be long forgotten. But Fossils! Well they are as old as time and for collectors in the future there will always be new and still rarer specimens to find. This means that Mary Anning, that young maid from Lyme, who devoted her life to exploring those frowning and precipitous cliffs, will never ben forgotten. After all is said and done, she makes a romantic legend and a good story.

There is a long tradition of successful amateur dramatics at Budleigh Salterton. Since the group was founded in 1938, it has gone from strength to strength, finally acquiring its own theatre - the Salterton Playhouse - in 1970. The Playhouse is set next to the stream in Meadow Lane, and is accessed by footpaths, one from Station Road, one from the car park behind the Public Hall, as well as Meadow Road. The auditorium has raked seating and full facilities for approximately 80 patrons including disabled access and toilets.

As a result, we are currently able to stage four plays a year, with each production running for a week, every evening Monday ‒ Friday, ending with a Matinee on Saturday. We are always glad to welcome individuals who are interested in acting and directing, and there are plenty of opportunities for non-acting members to become involved in a variety of backstage and front of house activities. The club also has a busy Social Programme, which does much to maintain the integrity of the group during the periods between productions. This involves events such as social play readings, theatre visits to both local amateur and professional productions, as well as our annual
Garden Party. The Salterton Drama Club is nothing if not social, and new members can be assured of a warm welcome. We do endeavour to provide as wide a variety of Productions as possible, with a selection of comedy, drama and thrillers each year. In November last year we produced a show ‒ Radio Budleigh presents An Evening With Noel Coward . As the title suggest this was presented as a radio show, and consisted of a read One Act Play, followed by songs and sketches all written by Noel Coward. This gave many members who do not act the opportunity to appear on stage. Our next Production is a Drama entitled Waters of the Moon by

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life about memory shortages. This was a condition familiar to us both but we took exception to having it pointed out by a mere machine. Then we realised it was projection on that devious machine’s part for it was the computer itself that needed treatment that even defragmenting couldn’t supply.
Easy as 1-2-4 by Cec Hardy I can’t tell you what I got for Christmas because it hasn’t happened yet. Oops, I’ve let the gerbil out of the bag. For all these years I’ve regaled you in the winter article with tales of how badly Christmas went and revealed my broken New Year resolutions when actually I write this in the dark days before the solstice.
We’ve been told that most people change their computers every two years. To me that‘s incredibly wasteful but reluctantly we conceded defeat on this occasion and added to the enormous pile of redundant electronic stuff at the tip. The replacement model is very fast but too efficient for my liking. I have the impression it’s decided we are decrepit old codgers and keeps suggesting we change things when we’re quite happy with the status quo.
In fact that attention-grabbing first sentence isn’t strictly true. Wife Christine and I bought ourselves a joint present back in November. It probably didn’t qualify as a Christmas gift since neither of us wanted it but that can perhaps be said of many a lovingly chosen present.
Since I’ve now shot myself in the foot regarding 2014 resolutions I haven’t yet made I’ll mention one of last year’s instead. I’d joined a choir and decided I couldn’t get away with miming forever and had better learn to read music. It might even improve my harmonica playing. Simple enough to master the dots, I thought, for even Christine had recently managed it. “It’s mathematical.” she smugly claimed. Alarm bells should have started ringing in the head of one who once scored 11% in a maths exam.

comfortably? Something to drink? Basically, music is divided into bars. There are commonly four beats to a bar except when there aren’t. Inside these bars reside notes - semi breves, minims, crockets and quavers, which our American cousins refer to as whole, half, quarter and eighth notes. I don’t often agree with American pronunciation, spelling and grammar but in the case of music I find their ideas eminently sensible.
I believe a whole note occupies 100% of a bar. What puzzles me, among many other things, is that if a semi breve is a whole note and occupies a whole bar then what is a breve? Well, according to our super fast new computer the word ‘breve’ is derived from the Latin ‘brevis’ meaning ‘short’. This seems a little strange as I recall reading somewhere that it’s the longest note value in music use nowadays. The Americans call a breve a double whole note since it lasts twice as long as a whole note. Now 82% of my brain can accept that you can have 200% of something but the other 11% doesn’t think you can go above the 110% which sportspeople often claim to achieve. Of course it’s just as problematical when we get to really short notes. A semihemidemisemiquaver should come with a health warning. I badly burned my lips and twisted continued on page 24

my tongue when I unexpectedly encountered these while practising the harmonica. Things were much simpler back in the 6th century BC. Wife Christine disagrees but declines to argue since I obviously remember it so well. It’s said that a clever Greek scientist called Pythagoras took time out from his triangular ruminations to let loose his great brain on musical theory and devised a system of octaves divided into twelve. Even to me this seemed logical and mathematical but unfortunately the music purists said it didn’t sound right so they messed about with it and sharps and flats started popping up all over the place. So by the time I’d worked my way through bunches of keys, only to come up against augmented triads and diminished fifths, I’d decided to chuck in the choir, chuck out the harmonica and take up origami. Who knows how many interesting artefacts can be produced from the pages of all my teach yourself music books? Certainly not me, I’m no mathematician. Happy New Year, Cec

ETHAN I first met Ethan when he walked up to me while I was sun bathing on my local beach. He was brandishing a freshly caught trout in front of my nose. He and his associates had just bagged eight of the beauties in one net they had set across the river upstream from the beach. These they proceeded to sell to beach-goers with the highest disposable income. How was it, I said to them later, that they never seemed to be bothered by water bailiffs. Ethan just laughed and said that the last one they spoke to ended up floating down some river, still shouting, courtesy of the business end of his boot. I made a mental note always to keep on the right side of Ethan and his friends. Poaching, although in his blood, was just a sideline for Ethan. He had what he called his proper job; which was a general dealer in anything that would make him a fast buck. In time, revenue and customs became just as interested in Ethan as he was in his money making ventures. This was somewhat unfortunate for

ANGEL DUST There she was on the back seat of the 157 from town, all curled up like cat sunning herself on a kitchen windowsill. I hadn`t seen Simone for weeks since she went to visit her cat in Wales. She had apparently been stranded there on an island inhabited by monks, undergone a psycho- analytical test for the insane and been thrown into prison. Not bad work I thought, even for Simone, who courted disaster like butch cassidy collected banknotes. Later as we both sipped coffee at ginos she elaborated on the finer points of her latest adventure. As happened most of the time with Simone it all started quite innocently. She took a day trip to Caldey island just off the coast of Tenby in Wales. After the grand tour of the monastery and a communal picnic on the cliffs, Simone went down for a quick dip in the sea and a sun bath. She was rudely awakened sometime later by what she referred to as the welsh version of the yettie, demanding to know what she was still doing on the island as it was early evening and all the tourists had taken ferry home hours
ago. Simone said she was more than happy to camp out for the night as she had her four seasons sleeping bag with her and catch the morning ferry. The man responded by jumping up and down like a mad thing, telling her it was illegal to stay on the island overnight and threatened her with the police. With that he stomped off never to be seen again. . Simone decided to settle down for the evening and watched puffins playing in the tidal pools at the cliff base. She caught sight of a lifeboat out on a call close to the island and was only mildly surprised when it beached near her. The penny finally dropped when four men jumped off the lifeboat and headed straight for her. The yettie had apparently phoned them to get her removed from the island. She was immediately plied with hot tea and custard creams, which was all very nice but it was a sunny evening at the end of May and Simone didn’t feel hypothermia was an issue. It was just turning into a nice little tea party when the police helicopter arrived. They too had been called and were bemused too say the least at the surreal sight of Simone feeding custard creams and sweet nothings to the best looking lifeboat man in the party. C’est la vie! The Old Vet’nary
Nostalgic happenings on the farm
by Ken Watson
Palpation
I
f you don’t know what it means you soon will. I have always admired the way my wife can handle dishes hot from the oven, but then if my fingertips were as innured to the heat as hers have become I would not have been able to carry out my life’s work as well as I have done. On the other hand my brother-in-law, a farmer all his life, had fingers like a bunch of bananas and they served him well. Every vet worth his or her salt gives patients a thorough examination whilst listening to the owner’s recital of the symptoms. Much of this is done by feeling with the fingertips, or palpation.
I often think the medical profession is losing this accomplishment because, like playing the piano, it needs constant practice. Of course, the medical profession is impeded by clothing, but just imagine if it were not so and you might have the situation where a mother has brought her daughter because of an ear infection and is suddenly told, ‘Madam did you know your daughter is pregnant?’. Such a scenario often happens in the veterinary world, or maybe it is a large abdominal tumour, or even severe constipation. That is what make veterinary work so much more interesting than medical.
JAN to MAR 14
A car salesman who was a bit of a wag once telephoned me and as I was rather a long time coming to the phone he said, ‘‘Have your arm half way up a cow did you?’’ Only he did not put it quite like that which is something that people might find repugnant. But believe you me it is where palpation really proves its worth. In there is a world of wonder. With your fingertips you can feel all the amazing stages of pregnancy or it’s aftermath, the growth of the foetus and the accompanying throbbing rise of the arteries and changing shape of the ovaries. Maybe it is all redundant today because of that modern miracle the scan. Yet I am sure one skill has not changed; that magic moment when you feel the situation inside the newly opened uterus of a different birthing in a sheep, cow or less often a mare. What is this jumble of legs? Are they fore or hind legs or even a mix of twins tumbling to be born. Or where is the head, and in the case of twins does this head belong to these legs. Once the situation has been sorted comes the business of bringing the foetus into this world. Two forelegs and a head together is the ideal but sometimes you have to make the most of what you find
and it can then become difficult. It is amazing what a difference can be made by just pulling the ears through the cervix, the head will then follow. I once used this principle to good use. I was called to a caravan where a puppy had it’s head stuck in a hole in the floor. When I arrived there was already a fire engine and an RSPCA team on the scene, and the firemen were assembling some powerful looking cutting gear. I noticed that the hole was one inch longer than it was broad, so I turned the puppy’s head and then pulled the floppy ears back one at a time and out it came. But, returning to the birthing process, one thing is certain, for that one moment when you hold that slimy, warm and wriggling new born in your arms is one of the best sensations ever. Having carried out those essential procedures to kick-start life I would turn and look at the owner and I never came across even the most toil hardened farmer who could not help a smile crossing his face. K. Watson

Celebrating 22 years of Business in East Devon

MANAGING your MONEY Don't lose out in retirement
R
ecent figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) suggest that 1 out of every 2 people who retire could qualify for an enhanced annuity. Some retirees may be able to increase their incomes by 40% (depending on their health and lifestyle situation). If you don’t shop around for your annuity and simply take the first one on offer then you might be missing out. In fact, the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) issued a report in 2012 which suggested that by taking the first annuity on offer pensioners could be losing up to £1 billion in retirement income. You might not think that you qualify for these enhancements but our experience has demonstrated that it’s always worth considering lifestyle

Here’s a list of some of the lifestyle factors and health factors that might qualify for an enhancement:• high blood pressure • high cholesterol • weight problems • smoking • previous occupation • alcohol intake • heart problems • diabetes • or serious illnesses, for instance, cancer This isn’t an exhaustive list and we recommend
that you take independent financial advice which will focus on your personal situation. Remember once you’ve bought an annuity you can’t undo it - so it’s a once-and-for-all transaction - which makes it even more important to check everything.

Independent Your local specialist annuity & retirement adviser
We are happy to help you with your retirement choices and our experience can potentially help ensure that you don t miss out on all the options available. We aim to: Ensure you have considered all the options available to you. Research annuity rates to get you the most suitable deals on the
market.
Check whether you qualify for enhanced rates. Take on the burden of paperwork & liaise with your annuity and
pension provider.
Advise on draw-down and other options. Help you work out if investment annuities are suitable for you and
to pinpoint the advantages.
Advise on new EU rules which mean that male annuitants will
get less income (effective from Dec 2012) and a new directive on capital adequacy will also have a downward effect on rates.
