BUDLEIGH DIARY Nov & Dec 2015
Editor’s Letter Welcome to the November and December edition of the Budleigh Diary. Don’t miss the lovely photographic feature on Iron Age hill fort of Blackbury Camp in this issue - situated near Southleigh, Blackbury Camp is a great place to visit any time of the year. Living here, it’s easy to take our beautiful countryside for granted, but we’re at a stage now where it’s ‘Open Season’ to build all over our beautiful East Devon countryside, especially after the Government’s told us they’re building no matter what! Worryingly, when councils allow building on Grade1 agricultural land (Cranbrook), you know that something is seriously wrong. I’m sorry to discuss something as depressing as this in the Diary, but if you value the countryside, can I urge you to be vigilant. It’s easy to become resigned to mass development, but we
must be vigilant and active, otherwise councils and developers will wreak irreversible and unchecked damage to our countryside. What’s unique about East Devon is just how unspoilt it is currently, but you can’t help notice an increasing number of plans for large housing estates popping up all over the show. There’s much to look forward to over over November and December (but not the cold), so drag out the winter clothing and make sure you get out on those clear, sunny days to make the best of it. On the run up to Christmas, don’t forget to support your great local shops and businesses. Wishing you all the best Regards
Jon Ingles

Budleigh People
My Story - Maurice Sims
It’s a better quality of life Maurice Sims, who’s the proprietor of Ashbury Dental Care, has had a long association with East Devon and spent a great deal of his childhood in the area, with many fond memories of rock-pooling, fishing and time spent outdoors. In 2005 he accepted a 12 month NHS contract working at a practice in Sidmouth with a view to a longer term position there. Unfortunately the new dental contract of 2006 meant this opportunity was not to be and, although offered a job in London, Maurice stayed in the area, drawn by the sea, countryside and better quality of life. Maurice left Sidmouth and spent the subsequent years splitting his time working between a private practice and a specialist NHS practice, as well as working on a consultancy basis helping to set up the new Peninsula Dental School in Plymouth. It was during this time, whilst living in Budleigh Salterton, that a vision for his own practice was born, combining the knowledge and expertise he had gained, with an outstanding environment and location overlooking the Otter estuary. NOV to DEC 15
Today Maurice leads a multi-disciplinary team, providing both general and specialist dental care in Budleigh Salterton. Maurice commented, “Living and working in such a spectacular place was certainly the right decision for me. One of the things that never ceases to take my breath away are the sunrises over the Otter estuary in front of the practice as I am starting work. Being able to walk to work as oppose to commuting through traffic or on crowded trains certainly makes you appreciate living here. Whilst running a successful practice can be a challenge with long working hours, being able to live and work here is certainly a privilege. I am very grateful to all of the people who have helped me bring my vision to life including my outstanding team and of course all of our patients who make this possible.” When Maurice is not working, he finds time to enjoy walking, running, water-skiing, kayaking and generally being outdoors. As well as spending time with his partner Lisa (pictured above) and his family who live locally.

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life
Pining for a Predator by Cec Hardy
Anyone got a pine marten or two to spare? Probably not unless you happen to be visiting from Scotland for I believe they died out in our neck of the woods at least a hundred years ago. I’ve read recently that they are multiplying north of the border so there might be a few spare ones available. Of course even in their Celtic heartlands you can’t just nip down to the nearest pine marten sanctuary and pick one up. They are after all for life not just for Ch****** (that was a close one, nearly mentioned the dreaded word and it’s only November). “He’s really flipped this time” I hear you mutter, “why would anyone want such a ferocious beast?” Well I’ve heard that in Scotland the pine marten population increase has resulted in a consequent reduction in grey squirrel numbers. “Mmm” I surmised, “could be the answer to a maiden’s prayer. Having one or two in the garden could save us a lot of trouble bird-feeder-theft and holes-in-the-lawn wise. I’d even travel up to Scotland to collect them.” I’m a bit of an animal lover but it doesn’t extend to foreign beasts that invade this country, pillage our bird feeders and virtually wipe out our cute NOV to DEC 15
little native red squirrels. I believe nature should be allowed to take its course, red in tooth and claw. The trouble is there aren’t any natural predators around these parts. I’ve watched many dogs and cats try to catch a squirrel but even a whippet stands little chance. Pine martens on the other hand are quick, can climb trees and have very sharp teeth. Some grey squirrels were brought over from North America in the19th century. A big mistake for they bred like… grey squirrels. It’s estimated (the little blighters won’t stay still long enough to be counted) there are now around three million in the UK, give or take a million or so. Because of these unwelcome invaders there are only about ten to fifteen thousand red squirrels left. The grey ones carry a deadly virus to which the reds have no immunity and also have voracious appetites as we know to our cost whereas the red ones are pickier in their eating habits so lose out to the guzzling greys. The pine martens, being native, don’t seem to bother their fellow native red squirrels so as the grey incomers are driven off the reds come out to play in ever increasing numbers. It’s rarely a good idea to introduce a species where they don’t belong. In New Zealand, for instance, they’ve almost lost their national bird, the kiwi, due to ferrets, dogs, cats etc. Like many of their native birds the kiwi doesn’t fly which is fine if you don’t have to but once mammals are deliberately brought in or simply hitch a ride in a passing boat you have to learn to run very fast.
Attempts have been made to reduce the grey squirrel problem but the closing of stable doors springs to mind. Unfortunately squirrel meat doesn’t seem to be a great delicacy. But once our pine martens are established happily in the garden I hope we can safely remove all our squirrel defences. Even if red ones appear I’d quite happily watch them delicately nibble on the odd bit of birdseed. I’m not sure if pine martens eat grey squirrels but they certainly put the wind up them so that they migrate to someone else’s bird table. I’ve studied an owners’ manual and can guarantee they’d be well looked after. Small mammals are mentioned in the dietary requirements section but I’ve heard they are also partial to jam and honey so I think I could manage to keep a couple fed, though the dental fees might be a problem. Squirrels may not be entirely responsible for the holes in the lawn. Wife Christine has noticed many cavernous holes in what passes for grass now that it has had its yearly cut. I’d pin the blame on badgers but she recently watched a nature programme in which armadillos were digging really deep holes and has decided it must be them, so has set up a cunning trip wire in the garden connected to her camera hoping they inadvertently take a selfie and can be identified. Anyone have a predator who could rid us of armadillos? Apparently coyotes, black bears and cougars are good at the job - any offers? Top price paid will collect. Cec

However, the need for retirement planning has never been more pressing. State pensions look vulnerable, final salary schemes are retreating into history and pension freedoms (whilst they fill the Treasuryʼs coffers) mean that individuals may erode their pension funds. A Childhood Christmas
Xmas party at Seaton Town Hall 1930
S
ometimes I think that our minds are like photographic plates on which childhood impressions are printed and memories such as the smell of a bonfi re, autumn leaves, or an old Christmas card, can send us back in time to develop that plate.
Sometimes an older type of Christmas card with the music or carols, and glittering icicles and sparkling frosty bells takes me back to pre-war Seaton when, with my brother and mother, we paid a visit to the World Stores in Fore St. In those far-away days of my youth, the Christmas display we saw would put to shame any of our local shops of today. There were great boxes of NOV to DEC 15
crystallised fruits, sugared apricots and peaches, and boxes of chocolates with pictures on their covers. There were slender boxes of dates and figs and French plums tied with dark ribbons, jars of ginger and sacks of Brazil nuts. I well remember the enormous cheeses and, if you were well behaved the grocer would give you a small slice to taste. My mother always dealt with Louds the Butchers and at Christmas they always had a fi ne display of dressed poultry and neat carcasses hanging outside the shop. This would have horrified the jobsworths we now call the food inspector but in those pre-war Continued Overleaf...

days we were free from the endless regulations that are the scourge of 21st century England. We always loved to visit the drapers shop of Ferris and Prescott in Sidmouth St to see if we could fi nd a new shirt for fatherʼs Christmas present. One of the fascinations of Mr Ferrisʼ drapery establishment in those days was the over head tramway which whisked the money across the shop to the cash desk. The assistant took the cash and secured it into a little wooden casket together with the bill. A sharp pull at a handle and the casket would fly across a miniature railway system, in a minute or so it would make the return journey with the change arriving back, notifying its presence with a bell like clang. On busy days this system working from all departments was a wonder to see. Opposite the town hall, the Smith family had a shop which sold all sorts of stationery ware and daily newspapers. In an upstairs room they had a special display of

toys, wind-up cars, model trains, dolls, whips and tops, hoops, marbles, skipping ropes and shuttle cocks. For me it really was a wonderful and fun for a short time they seemed to be endowed with life. I know that many of my old school friends will remember the annual Christmas visit to our

school of M r Gould, chairman of the Seaton Urban District Council and local businessman. We all lined up to receive an orange, a piece of Christmas cake and a sixpence piece, not a lot in modern terms but in those days of our youth it seemed a fortune. By the way, Mr Gould, always a generous benefactor to Seaton, paid for this out of his own pocket. We always spent our Christmas holiday with our maternal grandparents who lived in an old cottage at Bulverton, Sidmouth. My grandmother kept a large scrapbook in which she pasted Christmas cards from previous years. They always took my breath away by their loveliness
Abbotts Gift Shop, The Square, Seaton 1927
Those days are long gone, dissolved like dew and mist, but December can still be a season of surprises , so why not try to recapture the Christmas spirit and start this month, of all months, by showing goodwill to all and trying to remember the true meaning of Christmas. Happy Christmas to you all.
Ted Gosling
and these bespangled cards with their robins and snow which came in the postmanʼs bag in those far-off days were endowed with properties which even today will embody a long forgotten impression of a time now long gone. During our stay in Sidmouth grandmother Parsons would always take us to the Radway cinema for a Christmas treat. Grandmotherʼs favourite actors were Robert Donat and Herbert Marshall but for me, and my brother a diet of westerns and Disney made our day. NOV to DEC 15

The Old Vet’nary by Ken Watson
Night Calls
W
hen I look back, in my declining year, to my working days I sometimes wonder how I survived it all. For at least 20 years, possibly more, I worked alternate nights and weekends on top of a 5 day week. This meant a lot of night work. Sleep was regularly broken by the telephone. Through the haunting waves of slumber, decisions had to be made. Could it wait till morning? Would I need any special equipment. Location? Must get that right. Folk are notoriously poor at giving directions so an encyclopaedic knowledge of local geography was needed. Then there was the delicate matter of payment. Has to be discussed because, unlike the commercial world, a veterinary business depends on the earnings of the vet and when people steal, for that is what it is, his stock-in-trade, they are also robbing all those employees who depend on him. How many times have I been told “I have the money waiting for you”, and when I walked in the door, “Now about the money”! So now you have dressed, started the car and are on your way. Still sleepy. What is the best route? What problem awaits you. Some roads in Plymouth run to numbers over 1,000 and have long front gardens with the number on the house. I had a pillar mounted spotlight on the car just for this. Strictly illegal, but a godsend. I remember a time when I stopped a police car to ask if they had seen a run-over dog. I watched with amusement as the occupants obviously discussed whether to caution me about the pillar spot. They didn’t and I never was. It met it’s demise when modern cars were produced without pillars strong enough to hold it. Reasons for a call-out ranged from domestic pets in trouble - injuries, cuts, severe illness, objects lodged in throats - to larger animals, often on Dartmoor. A swan flew into power lines, a lone calf being struck by traffic. All went into the back of the car. These were just the cases that could not or would not come to the surgery. Many was the time I was told there was nobody to bring the patient in, only to arrive and find 2 or 3 teenagers slumped in front of the TV. NOV to DEC 15

Callers ranged from owners to Police, Fire Brigade or RSPCA, and I became a connoisseur of accident set-ups. Dollies were set up, onlookers kept back, but I remember one poor dog, in the gutter on a steep street in a downpour. Instructions to PC’s not to move the casualty meant that his body had backed up water which gushed over my feet when I picked him up. Some accidents were in dark and lonely spots, others in the midst of bustling night life. I attended a German Shepherd, back broken, in Plymouth’s notorious Union Street. I gave him a pain killer, but you could not hang about in such a place with drunks a plenty. So I picked him up with a lift I had perfected for such cases and as I did so he buried his teeth into my wrist. I like to think that nobody noticed. Just as dangerous was

a call to one of Plymouth’s notorious drinking pubs, packed on a Saturday night. Medical bag held high, “Let me through please”, but knock someone’s drink at your peril! The late hour seemed to create an intimacy with folk. Sitting beside a client while a bitch delivered pups, with intermittent help, in its bed. Sharing pity for a mare with colic which had to be kept on its feet and moving although it sweated with pain. The mutual joy felt as I held a fresh delivered calf or lamb in my arms. The interaction with people, like the young couple, no more than children really, very much in love, who had found this kitten severely injured below their bedroom window. It was obviously their pet, and even more obvious that they had no money... Hence the pretext. I hope I went along with the charade. Charity, charity! I often gained insight into the terrible tragedies of the night. The young girl dying of cancer, the man in the prime of his life but dying of a brain tumour and sitting in his bed in dread of the coming night. Or the renal dialysis patient who has run out of veins and awaits the arrival of the expert visiting night shift or nurses to rescue her. Did you know that all that went on while you slept? Then home again and hoping for no more calls, and hoping the car is still there and driveable. One of my partners kept an old banger for night calls, tired of returning and finding the wheels gone. One mile from home a right turn at the crossroads, no traffic and an eerie silence, but a red light holding me. Suddenly a gang of teenagers appeared from nowhere and jumped all over the car, aerial and wipers at risk. I jumped the light and jinked and turned and they all fell off one by one. Back home and I looked up and saw crystal stars glittering in a cold sky and it all seemed worth it. The best job in the world. - K. Watson
