BUDLEIGH DIARY Sept & Oct 2015

Editor’s Letter Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Budleigh Diary. We’ve had quite a changeable summer this year, but on the whole I’d say the weather’s been great, so we have much to be thankful about this summer. This issue we find out more about the Budleigh Film Society - a great local group brimming with enthusiasm for the Budleigh community. We’ve also included a piece from the June 1995 Budleigh Diary about a famous artist with a connection to Budleigh Salterton. The redesign of eastdevonhub.co.uk went without a hitch and the new version is up and running for all to use. If you’re the event promoter for your club, society or charity, it’s vital you get your events into eastdevonhub to take advantage of getting into The Budleigh Diary event listings as well as the chance to get into Devonshire magazine also.

We’ve been astounded by the response to our event websites, so much so we’re currently looking for compilers to work from home to help with our growing EventHub network. Additionally, we’re looking for an apprentice to help with the production of our magazines, also to help maintain our websites. The ideal candidate would have a varied range of skills; be forward-thinking, have a great eye for detail, strong computer skills, an interest in photography (not essential), and decent command of English. Please call Nigel on 01395 513383 to find out more about these great opportunities. Wishing you all the best for the coming months. Regards

Jon Ingles

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life

The Pen is Mightier than the Mouth by Cec Hardy

Wife Christine has been known to comment on my alleged loss of hair, eyesight and hearing. Now she’s gone too far - she reckons I’m losing my sense of humour.

a parrot on his head. At least it would be if I could remember the punch line. Luckily her threat only applied to the spoken word so I felt confident enough to fill my fountain pen from the inkwell and set down some more words of wisdom on the unmentionable subject. Unfortunately our voracious gerbil seized the parchment as I took a comfort break and not enough scraps remained undigested to piece together even a short paragraph. It was side splittingly funny but you’ll have to take my word for it. Enough of that fascinating subject, for it’s time to move on to this issue’s gently humorous moan - Too much choice, too little time.

I nervously await her reaction “Have we got to the funny bit at last?” whenever she peruses the latest issue I hear you ask, though I wish you’d that has plopped through the letterbox. speak up a bit. “I don’t know” I I felt confident she’d appreciate my reply, “I’m having a crisis of laughter hilarious article on hand dryers but confidence and can’t see any light at the titterscore was noticeably below the end of the tunnel. Perhaps I need average. I was dismayed, for I felt new glasses.” I’d struck a healthy balance between jollity, political correctness and my Anyway, here goes. I’ve probably duty to entertain and inform the ranted on about this before. I can’t good people of East Devon but she remember and hopefully neither can maintained it was just a load of hot my reading public which I suspect air and not remotely funny. To cap it is also of a certain age (apologies all she threatened me with divorce or to those who aren’t). Wife Christine even worse if I mentioned the words would no doubt add memory loss to ‘hand dryer’ again within her hearing. the ever growing list of my alleged old As a writer I strongly support freedom age afflictions. Now where was I…? of speech and refuse to be gagged. Ah yes, I was going to say that life was My remit from Young Mister Ingles so much simpler when I were a lad. As I dimly recall there was only one is to produce satirical comment with just a hint of squirrel and this often TV channel and radio consisted of the means moaning about the state of Home Service for the serious listener, the world in a light-hearted article not a Light Programme for the more necessarily packed with jokes. It would frivolous and Radio Luxembourg (with be easy for me to tell the one about somewhat variable reception) for the the Englishman, Welshman, Irishman rebellious teenager. regularly. When a light bulb went you simply inserted a replacement. Now we have to make decisions about everything. Choosing from hundreds of TV and radio channels, switching banks, whether to get your gas from an electricity company or vice versa, what can be recycled and where... and what do I do with a drawer full of assorted light bulbs that don’t fit anything? I probably mentioned before that I’m of a greenish complexion and would quite like to save the world, so I can see why some changes have been necessary but if choice means spending hours trying to work out which tariff or vacuum cleaner is marginally cheaper I prefer an invigorating walk along the coast path. I was going to say all that but decided not to as it seemed like a load of hot air and not remotely funny. I’m proud to say I’m still firmly entrenched in the 20th century and have no intention of changing. Wife Christine maintains that change has got to come but I dispute this, citing the example of several parking meters I’ve encountered. She frequently calls me a ‘Luddite’, ‘technophobe’ or simply ‘silly old sod’. She, on the other hand, has embraced the new technology, having dealings with apps and mobile what-nots beyond my comprehension. She recently informed me she’d started tweeting. In humorous vein I offered her some birdseed but she did not appreciate my attempt at levity. I reckon she’s losing her sense of humour. Cec

By Ted Gosling, West Country Author and Freeman of Seaton

The Undercliff

Ted Gosling shares some historical notes on the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs - established by Nature Conservancy as a National Category Nature Reserve in April 1955

Agriculture Grazing of sheep, goats and pigs in the Undercliffs was important until early this century. The grazing dues were high probably because of the long season. Most of the tree cover has developed during the last 50 years. There was human habitation until the 1950s. There had been several cottages below Whitlands, where there is the ruin of the Westcliff Cottage, c1830, known later at Stanley Cottage. This marked the western end of the Whitlands (formerly Clevelands) estate. Here there had been a large orchard and a pheasantry. At Pinhay Warren is the ruin of East Cliff Cottage, at

SEP to OCT 15

the eastern boundary of the estate. In several places there was the coppicing of hazel for pea sticks, bean poles and hurdles, etc. Names such as Donkeyʼs Green, Rock Orchard and Pinhay Warren tell us something of the activities and we know that soft fruit was grown and nuts were picked in large quantities. At Dowlands Cliffs is a sheepwash that was fed from a well-spring - clean sheep fetched better prices that dirty ones. There was a cart road from Dowlands Farm to the cottages below, so transport was easy. In many places are remains of stone walls, forming boundaries or animal pens. Continued Overleaf...

At the eastern end of the Reserve is a large area of bracken, this is Ware Common. Grazing rights still exist there but are no longer practiced. Bracken often encroaches when grazing ceases which, as it is no longer used for animal bedding or burnt for potash for the glass industry, has resulted in its increase becoming a problem through-out the British Isles. Ivy was cut for winter feed and carted up.

Habitations etc. In the nineteenth century the inhabitants were listed as woodmen, quarrymen, shepherds and pigherds, but there is little evidence of numbers or of locations of cottages, apart from some above Pinhay Warren and at Whitlands. There appear to have been more in the western half, probably because of the steep ridges and gulleys in the eastern section, especially between Charton and Pinhay. Diligent searching r e ve a l s r e m a i n s of building walls here and there, but only about half a dozen have been found so far. Shepherds Cottages were the most substantial. About 1835, Rock Cottage was built at Downlands, originally built as a pair. At the time of the 1839 slip it was occupied by William Critchard and his wife and children. On SEP to OCT 15

he

BUDLEIGH DIARY

Christmas Eve he and his wife were at the Ashen Faggot ceremony at Downlands Farm, Rousdon. They arrived home at around 1 a.m. to fi nd their baby-sitter distressed, as there had been frightening rumbling noises and the house had shaken. They sent her home and went to bed. In the early hours pieces of ceiling fell down with the vibration and plaster came from the walls. William got up and, with difficulty, opened the back door to fi nd rocks and a high bank behind the house, which can bee seen there today, and that the garden in front had gone down several feet. Mrs Critchard had served meals and refreshments to people walking by. When this happened, their furniture and belongings were taken by horse and cart and they lived up on the estate. However, she did return every spring and summer for several years to continue the catering, although she did not live there. The house therefore fell into disrepair and some years later was pulled down. The material from it was used to build the thatched Cliff Cottage about 200m to the east, which was also a pair of cottages. Later it was occupied by the Gapper family until the 1950s. In the early 1920 the house was converted into one cottage and the chimney stacks were heightened. The garden layout and boundaries can still be seen, as well as the lower parts of the walls. The 16

well was a shallow one, a dug out spring, and was the same that the Critchards had used. There is still some water in it, but no longer a steady flow. Immediately to the west is the Hazel Grove and at the bend in the path about half-way through it is a low, flat rock, known as the ʻresting stoneʼ. Just near the western end of the grove, The Avenue starts, and to the right is the path to Badgers Pond, and the way up the cliff is known as The Tunnel. Further west there is a walled enclosure on the seaward side of the path, which was a sheep pen and also a vegetable garden. This was one of four, and Critchards can be seen on the south side of the path at his cottage site. It was reached by the three stone steps at the eastern end. More recent inhabitants were the Home Guard during the Second World War, and two or three German prisoners of war who had escaped from the POW camp which was sited at the Warners Holiday Camp. They holed up for a considerable period, no doubt keeping well out of the way of Dadʼs Army, whose whereabouts were easily seen by the coiled barbedwire fencing and staking at all possible landing and entry points. The army is said to have cleared all the mines, but no certificate was issued. Since then there have been criminals in makeshift tents in the rock clefts, but none has endured there for long.

The Harman Young family at the Landslip Undercliffs c1902

Industry The early Ordnance Survey Maps (fi rst published 1809) show lime kilns at Bindon Charton and Whitlands, where there were also quarries. Building sandstone was also quarried at Bindon, Rousdon and Axmouth. Names such as ʻHurdle Greenʼ indicate their trade and hurdles were made at Bindon- Downlands and Whitlands-Pinhay Undercliff until well into the present century. Mr Gapper used to make them at Cliff Cottage. A company called Pebbles & Flints ran a pebble picking industry at the Axmouth end at the reserve, which continued until the 1960s. Ted Gosling

The main aim of the Society is to bring the best of world cinema to its members. To do this, a committee of eight spends the winter months viewing films and agonising over which ones should be included in the nine showings to give an agreed, balanced programme. From the audience reaction slips which are analysed, it seems that the Film Society manages to please most of its members most of the time. Wine is available before the evening session, but the afternoon sessions get just as good ratings on tea and biscuits. The eighth season will open on Wednesday September 23rd in the Public Hall with ʻHuman Capital’, an intriguing Italian thriller. Other films this season are from Poland,

The Old Vet’nary

Nostalgic happenings on the farm

by Ken Watson

Eccentric Vets

I

have always said that, in my time at least, the veterinary profession was the last bastion of eccentrics. There was a vet, very well known in the day because he had written an iconic students textbook on Animal Husbandry. He had two sons. The younger sold and maintained generators. Indeed he serviced my own generator. On the outskirts of Plymouth, no mains you see. But the other was a vet renowned throughout the profession for his misdemeanours, who was always being hauled before the Disciplinary Committee. On one occasion he smashed down someone’s front door. Heaven knows why. However his main foibles came with his hobby, flying. Regularly upsetting the civil authorities by flying where he shouldn’t, such as under bridges, he also developed a feud with his local police. This resulted in him repeatedly dive bombing a police car. He was always being struck off. They don’t make them like that these days. When I joined the practice in Plymouth it was temporarily without an X-ray machine. One of my first jobs was to take a Greyhound to be X-rayed at a neighbouring practice in the city centre. I was later moved to say, “I have spent the morning in the company of a madman!” This vet’s every action defined the word procrastination, and in the intervals of that he would break out in song, excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan. In fact, I was so absorbed in his antics that I forgot the golden rule - concentration; so that when the needle went in the greyhound jumped straight up in the air and when he came down he buried his teeth in the top of my head. This vet managed to run his practice on a shoestring. He instructed his clients to bring a 3inch bandage for use when they collected their bitch after spaying, and from helping him out when he was ill I realised that he ran his practice almost entirely on samples he cadged from visiting reps.

Then there was the student who came to us for experience. He was openly hostile to our charging of clients and said he intended to charge the very minimum by working out of his mother’s back kitchen. Although yet a student, he looked old and world weary enough for retirement, and his name was Doody! My senior partner was so successful that he retired at 40, but what a career. He was so precocious that he completed the 5 year course before he was 21 and had to wait to reach his majority before he could practice. He joined the Plymouth practice and then expanded it so that it stretched from Liskeard to Modbury, from the coast to Tavistock. Nothing

HEALTH & CARE defeated him. As well as this he had a vigorous social life. He never refused an invitation and would arrive at calving in full evening dress. He kept pigs at the surgery and would don overalls to attend them but their aroma would follow him to the most urban social functions. He drove a minivan and I have seen him changing his clothes in a city road quite oblivious to the busy traffic almost clipping him. He would go to the cinema on his night on duty and arrange to have any emergencies flashed up on the screen. Multitalents were his. I was appalled that the two storey boarding kennels, which he had built, adjoining the surgery had no drainage. Sawdust did the job and also trailed into the surgery. I made my feelings known and one day he arrived with a pneumatic drill and put in an excellent drainage system. “I have always wanted to use one of these,” he said. On his early retirement he bought a farm in Polzeath. He had a very down-to-earth approach to everything. When he needed a garage there he built one out of railway sleepers which he happened to have. It was the ugliest building I have ever seen. When he decided to decorate the interior of his farm house he used limewash throughout, even over some of the furniture fittings. He accomplished this task nonstop one weekend without stopping for sleep. When he came to return to Plymouth on the Monday very early, his trusty minivan soon jammed in third gear. He realised that if he stopped he would never get going again so when he reached the toll booth on Tamar Bridge he put money in a tobacco tin and threw it into the booth as he charged through. The toll keeper thought it was a missile and called the police. He arrived at the surgery with a police escort, quite unperturbed. This attitude to life was his hallmark. I once came into the surgery to hear him being berated by a client. The diatribe went on for some time during which he listened carefully and then finally said, with some concern, “Well, if you feel strongly about it I should tell someone,” and walked away.
