This year's Angels are 14 children from the Don Bosco School in Kuwinda slum, Nairobi. The Marle Gallery is delighted to host the Society of Wood Engravers 74th Annual Exhibition which is the only opportunity for Westcountry art lovers to see this important showcase of British wood engraving talent. The exhibition presents work from around 70 members of the Society, each of whom have been elected or invited to membership on merit. Wood engraving is a distinctive and delightful art form. Although exquisitely crafted and intricate, wood engraved prints are also very affordable providing an accessible route to owning original art of the highest quality.

SUMMER IS SHOW SEASON! Since Marine House at Beer opened almost fourteen years ago we have built close rapport with a select group of fine artists. Periodically we stage shows focusing on their work which is a great opportunity for collectors and all who enjoy the style of a particular artist to see an extensive body of their work.

his Summer the first show opening on June 16th is a joint one contrasting the fine impressionist talents of Robert Freame and the tightly observed figurative and still life paintings of Jim Farrant. Robert has exhibited at Marine House since we started. He is a fine interpreter of the moods of the Jurassic Coast and more recently of Norfolk and Suffolk as he has recently moved there to be closer to his grandchildren. Jim delights in striking depictions of people in every day scenes often in Greece or Spain and complements this with stunning still life. Between them over 40 paintings will be on view.

tarting on July 14th we are staging a major solo show of the internationally acclaimed figurative artist Anita Klein. Anita’s iconic works use her own generalised “everywoman” image as a template to produce hauntingly beautiful paintings often in a verdant setting. These are produced both in her London and Italian studios. Some are large, some small, some prints, others watercolours or acrylics. Allow yourself to be drawn in by the siren call of these fine paintings. Not a show to be missed.

Fletcher Sibthorp - ‘Zoe XI’ Saturday16th June - Saturday 7th July Private View: Friday 15th June 6-9pm Paragone was an early medieval debate in which sculptors and painters alike argued their own practice as the superior mimesis of nature. They questioned the plastic constraints they were challenged by and how they attempted to imitate or even transcend their portrayal of man and his world. This exhibition will document this tension, focusing on the relationship between two and three dimensional production.

• 100ml Madeira or to taste

• 300ml of Chicken Stock

• Approx 4oz clarified butter

COOKING METHOD 1) F irstly pre-heat the oven to 200220c. Grate the potatoes and onion into a bowl and season. Place the mixture into a clean tea towel/cloth and squeeze out the excess liquid. Place back into the bowl and add a little of the clarified butter. 2) Heat a frying pan with the rest of the butter, place four metal rings in the pan and fill with the rosti potato mix, making sure to press down. Fry on a low heat until golden brown and turn over, carefully remove the ring and brown the other side. Set aside for later. 3) Heat a frying pan with a little oil, add a sprig of thyme and a crushed clove of garlic. 4) Season the chicken breasts and place skin side down in the pan and cook until the skin goes a golden colour. Place the breasts in the preheated oven for about

approximately 20 minutes. 5) Clean the leeks and carrots well. Peel the carrots and trim these and the leeks. Steam for 12-15minutes. 6) Whilst the vegetables are steaming you can start making the sauce by sweating the onions with a little oil. Add the chopped mushrooms and stir in. When the mushrooms are slightly soft add a good dash of madeira and then reduce the sauce down by half. 7) When that has reduced by half add the chicken stock and reduce the sauce again by half then add the cream, seasoning and reduce until it has reached a coating consistency. 8) While the sauce is reducing warm the rosti under the grill, once warmed add to a warm plate. Place the steamed vegetables on top, with the chicken. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, serve and please enjoy!

How Sidmouth inspired Betjeman to poetry Recalled here by John Fisher

Betjeman certainly knew the town well and was undoubtedly attracted by its architecture. But Sidmouth has many charms, not least of which is its location.

EXACTLY 50 YEARS AGO THIS SUMMER John Betjeman arrived in Sidmouth, complete with suitcase, fountain pen and camera crew, to make a film about the East Devon town for Television Wales & the West (TWW) or “good old Tellywelly” as Betjeman liked to call the company that later became HTV. With him during that stay was Jonathan Stedall, nowadays a renowned independent documentary film-maker but then a 23-year old director given his first major television assignment to work alongside the man later to become poet laureate, to produce a series of documentaries on places of Betjeman’s choosing in the West Country. It was the start of a friendship that was to last until the great man’s death, in 1984: it was also the first time that Betjeman had ever written a script in rhyme.

In the 1790s, “sunny Sidmouth”, the little borough flanked by towering red cliffs at the mouth of the river Sid, drew the historian, Polwhele, to write in praise of “the salubrity of the air, the fine dry soil, and a situation the most delicious, open to the south-sea yet not subject to fogs, and screened from all but the southern winds.” Little wonder that by the end of the century Sidmouth had become a fashionable resort.

But as with all their work together, Betjeman waited until he was invited to the cutting room to view the first edit of the film before writing the script to picture. Then he took out his fountain pen and wrote Still Sidmouth in rhyme, in a single sitting, astounding everybody. “One of Betjeman’s outstanding qualities was his kindness and I think this shows in his script.” Stedall says. “A lot of his observations are very personal. He imagines, for example, what people might be saying to one another or what they might be thinking. But he is never cruel. Fundamentally he loved life and people.” As Stedall’s discreet camera follows two women, strolling to the town’s narrow shopping streets, Betjeman pictures their conversation:

Sidmouth is little changed since the film was made, except (as elsewhere) for traffic, which Betjeman hated. Admittedly the butchers with its polished brass shop front became a bistro and the old-fashioned oil shop went on to sell gifts and reproduction furniture, but Sidmouth is still Sidmouth, its character remains intact and the fabric of the place is much as Betjeman saw it.

“Our brief was to create portraits of places which were close to Betjeman’s heart,” Jonathan Stedall recalls in his introduction to the bookof-the-film, Still Sidmouth*. “Sidmouth was, I believe, the first place we visited together”: although why Betjeman chose the town for the first of his 12 locations or why he decided to immortalise it in poetry, no one is sure. What is known is that he wrote two other television scripts in elegant rhyming couplets, one on Marlborough, his old school, which he loathed, the other on the Victorian engineer Brunel, whom he greatly admired. But neither subject allowed the poet the lightness of touch he employed in his masterful sketch of what now stands revealed perhaps as his favourite seaside town.

Betjeman’s genius for words and their effortless delivery p er fe c t l y c omplem ent e d Stedall’s style of film making. During 22 years they produced many memorable programmes together, including famously, Summoned by Bells and Thank God it’s Sunday. Shortly before the poet laureate’s final illness and his consequent retreat from public life, Stedall stepped unobtrusively in front of the camera to lead Betjeman back through many memories of his life to produce the autobiographical Time with Betjeman. Near the end of that final programme, sitting in the morning sun on his porch in Cornwall, a travel rug about his knees he was asked whether he had any regrets. With a twinkle in his eye he answered quietly, “Yes, I haven't had enough sex”. He died at Trebetherick, Cornwall in May 1984 after a long illness, with Stedall one of the six pallbearers at the funeral. They carried Betjeman’s coffin through driving rain across a mile of countryside to St. Enodoc’s

Time, it is said, was made for man, evidently this man did not live in Devon. Things happen here “directly” or in other words when they occur, without the consequences or limitations of time. To explain this: If one stops a man of Devonshire origin to ask the time of day he will generally reply “it must be getting on “ but getting on to what !! This surely would depend on how far it has got already. Therefore, you are no further forward except in time that is ! There are many pockets of Devon which definitely fall into the category of “Time-Warps”. I have the inestimable privilege of living in one of them. People here staunchly maintain that even the weather is different from “other parts”. If it is or not, they don’t really know of course because none of them go there anyway. One “spin-off” from living in a time-warp is that it tends to produce that wonderful “staff of life” - the eccentric. One of my friends who easily falls into this class, believes that we are not at the start of a new millennium at all, but that today is, in fact, the year of our Lord 1905! All items of furniture in his house have to be produced before 1905 and his food made by companies that were established before 1905. His clothing also has to be purchased under the same rigorous standards. He also insists on cleaning his home in a three-piece suit, but we haven’t got to the bottom of that one yet !! No one, it seems, is immune from the blandishments of living in Devon. I have found myself cutting pea sticks in December which is a relatively normal country pursuit for the time of the year, what slightly concerns me is that I never grow peas ! My parents too, seem susceptible. While my mother spends all her spare time growing petunias in old wheelbarrows, my father is in a class of his own. Three things have particularly struck me lately about him. Firstly, he keeps a mountaineer’s ice pick under the driving seat of his car and although this sort of behaviour isn’t particularly unusual for my father, I still had the audacity to ask why ! Apparently, electronically centrally locked cars like his own, when coming into contact with sea, lakes, canals or similar bodies of water, jam up when the water hits the electrics, so if the car is submerged you are in what is, in effect, your own hi-tec coffin, hence the ice pick. His car is also “equipped” with a policeman’s hat on the back shelf. This I understand, keeps “tail-gaters” at bay who are always looking to overtake. My father’s “piece de resistance” though,

was discovered quite by chance when breakfasting one morning with him in his house in the country. He always kept a loaded gun by the kitchen back door, but this had never disturbed me unduly until this particular morning when, whilst dissecting a rather delicious looking boiled egg, he suddenly leapt to his feet, ran out of the kitchen with a gun and fired unhesitatingly at his unwary quarry. Coming back in, he resumed his breakfast in a leisurely silence and as I chewed contentedly on my toast and marmalade I concluded that another pigeon had got his “Time-In”!

In the late sixties my father used to like driving his big old Rover across the Haldon hills in South Devon. The leather seats and walnut dash always made me and my sisters feel queasy on long journeys. Back in those days, there were still many tramps who used to quite literally walk the streets and countryside in search of food and shelter. One such old man was Smokey Joe. He had a large, round, mahogany coloured face; wispy, matted hair and a fantastically bushy, grey beard, stained black by the fire he always sat around. He lived in a small cave only a few steps away from the busy A38, the other side of Telegraph Hill, over looking the wonderfully wooded Teign Gorge. There was, in fact, nothing much that troubled Old Smokey; for he had shelter, hundreds of friends who used to wave to him from their cars and an endless supply of pasties thrown at his cave at speeds of up to 70 mph.

n East Devon, the 2 main rivers we have are the river Axe and the river Otter (excluding the Exe which for most of its East Devon route, is estuarine).

These two river valleys provide us with some really beautiful and peaceful countryside, in fact I consider nothing nicer on a sunny day than taking a walk with my dog along the river bank. The river Otter is pretty much unspoilt along it's length and has some truly lovely scenery. The walk in this issue is fairly casual, it's not a circular one, you can pretty much choose whether you wish to walk upstream, or downstream from the outset. Parking is easy, there's a car park by the bridge at Tipton St John, they ask for a

donation for parking (it's a parish property). From here you can either walk downstream to Harpford or walk directly upstream. The walk downstream requires you to step out of the car park and follow the footpath over the bridge, where you can then cross the road and go over the stile to continue your walk downstream. Alternatively, the walk upstream can be taken by walking directly from the car park and through the cricket field, which takes you to a stile at the end of the field. Turn left here, to cross the old railway bridge over the river and then follow the river upstream. For walking purposes, the ground is level through the whole course, so it's accessible to all the family.

ʻThe Very Land of Thatched Cottages’: A POET IN 19TH CENTURY DEVON

Widower Edward Moulton-Barrett, the owner of Cinnamon Hill in 1832, and his eleven children, lived in England at Hope End, a secluded mansion in the Herefordshire hills near Ledbury. His considerable fortune, accrued from his family s 300 year ownership of the plantation, was greatly reduced by the impending abolition of slavery and he could no longer afford the upkeep of his 475 acre estate. Despite concerns about the effect of the move upon his family, particularly his eldest daughter and prolific poet, Elizabeth, the house was sold. Elizabeth was a highly intelligent and sensitive

place is extremely full, & gay… I have been riding a donkey two or three times, & enjoy very much going to the edge of the sea. The air has made me sleep more soundly than I have done for some time…. Elizabeth s letters describe Sidmouth as the very land of thatched cottages…but not with pigstyes and dirty children , and of the sea, she writes, I always thought that the sea was the sublimest object in nature…. Brothers Edward and Samuel, and sister Henrietta, were thrilled to attend parties, dancing until three in the morning. Elizabeth, like her father, was not socially adept but the move to Sidmouth signalled a healthier and more active phase in her life.

young woman who had suffered from a chronic but undiagnosed illness since her teenage years. On 23 August 1832 Elizabeth, her two sisters Henrietta and Arabella, and six brothers, left Hope End in two carriages, arriving the next day at a rented property a short distance from the sea front in Sidmouth. Within days of arriving at Raferel House (now 8 Fortﬁeld Terrace) the boys were out with shrimping nets and Arabella was swimming in the sea. Henrietta was less fortunate, suﬀering jaw ache for several days! Elizabeth wrote We hear that the

Elizabeth and her father were greatly impressed by the minister Mr George Hunter; whose sermons were erudite and powerful. Elizabeth, inspired, wrote four hymns, one A Supplication for Love bearing the preface Recalled words from an extempore discourse, preached at Sidmouth, 1833 . Elizabeth wrote to a friend I wish you could hear Mr Hunter… I like so much to hear him talk. He has a feeling…for poetry & literature, which…I meet with, very rarely…Oh! I wish you knew Mr Hunter! The three Barrett sisters taught his seven year old daughter Mary who often stayed with them.

In May 1834 Elizabeth enjoyed a steam packet trip from Exmouth to Torquay accompanied by dear Mr Hunter and Mary. She wrote We saw Torquay,Teig n mout h, Dawl i sh, Exmouth: but after all… nothing… so green & lovely as this valley of Sidmouth.

She returned to Devon in 1838, when her health deteriorated, joining her aunt and uncle at Beacon Terrace, Torquay. Elizabeth maintained her friendship with Mr Hunter and his daughter who had, by then, moved to Axminster. Evidently Mary Hunter stayed with the family at times as she is recorded in the 1841 Census Records at Beacon Terrace. The death of two of Elizabeth s brothers in 1840 caused a rapid deterioration in her health. Samuel died at Cinnamon Hill from yellow fever and Elizabeth s favourite, Edward, was drowned in a sailing accident in Tor Bay on July

11th. She had persuaded her father to let Edward join her in Torquay, and was haunted by guilt for the rest of her life. Elizabeth returned to London in December 1841. In 1844 she presented Mr Hunter with three volumes of her poetry especially bound and inscribed with a poem To GBH November 2nd 1844 . Verse 4 reads:

How, when I sang of country walks, Enshrining kindly speeches, I saw you in our Sidmouth talks, Among the elm and beeches... Elizabeth secretly married poet Robert Browning on 12 September 1846 and her father disinherited her. On hearing of Mr Hunter s death in 1857 Elizabeth wrote to her sister Arabella, It is strange that within these two or three days I had thought much of dear Mr. Hunter - thought of Axminster, thought of Sidmouth, my thoughts seemed beckoned back. Elizabeth and Robert had one son Pen and lived in Florence. I can honestly say that there's nothing that can match an English cottage garden in the summer. aving been an upstanding member of this idyllic Devon community for some nine years, I was puzzled, and not a little shocked, to receive the following letter a couple of months ago.

In my imagination such a test might perhaps include questions on the etiquette of Morris Dancing, the art of tea drinking and the rules of cricket; even I d be stumped on that last one. But I never imagined myself taking a county test. Though deeply shocked by the tone of the letter, I wasn t unduly bothered. After all I ve gone native in many respects. I ve mastered the pronunciations for Crediton, Honiton, Teignmouth, Dunchideok etc and no longer require an interpreter when attending Newton Abbot Races or Widecombe Fair. The test should be a doddle and taking it would prove I wasn t lazy. I realise I can never qualify as a true Devonian by dint of birth but perhaps a sort of associate membership might be possible if I were to do really well. So I set to with a will and my Learn Theeself Devonness almanac. Nort to fret about I thought as I searched for my spectacles. As we head into the summer months of June and July the British Countryside is literally buzzing with life. Insects fill the air and most of our native wildlife is busily collecting food to feed this year’s offspring. With its huge variety of habitat there is plenty to see and do in the Devon countryside. By the begining of summer most of our native butterflies have emerged. Devon, due to its size and diversity, has nearly two-thirds of British butterflies living within its boundaries, including a number of rare species such as the High Brown Fritillary and the Silverstudded Blue. Throughout June the more common species such as Comma, Peacock, Orange-tip, Wall and Meadow Brown can all be seen searching for nectar. These species are joined by common migrant butterflies such as the Painted Lady and Red Admiral. Painted Ladies travel up from North Africa every year and in the summer of 2009 a ‘mass migration’ took place with millions of them arriving on our shores to breed. The Red Admiral butterfly migrates from continental Europe, with its velvety dark wings it is unmistakeable. In recent years a small number have begun overwintering in southern parts of the UK meaning that it can now be considered a resident species. Red Admiral

of the most common species and easiest to identiify is the Elephant Hawk moth. The adult moths are a striking pink and green combination and can be spotted throughout June and July feeding on plants such as honeysuckle. Elephant Hawk moths unusual name comes from its caterpillar, which has a trunk like spike at one end. As July approaches and the weather, hopefully, warms up, more dragonflies begin to appear. The dragonfly will have

Elephant Hawkmoth The national annual survey of our native butterflies, the Big Butterfly Count, has taking place since 2010 and last year involved 34,000 people. This year it runs from 14th July until 5th August and is a real opportunity to see how healthy our butterfly population is. For more infomation visit www.bigbutterflycount.org. As well as butterflies, their nightime counterpart, moths, are starting to emerge. There are over 600 species of moth recorded in Devon. Of these, it is probably the Hawkmoths which are the most noticeable, being the largest and most striking of the species. There are nine resident Hawkmoths in the British Isles and a further 8 or 9 migrants. One

Emperor Dragonfly spent up to three years underwater in its larval stage, where it would have been a ferocious predator. Unlike most other winged insects, dragonflies don’t have a pupal stage, so the larva would have climbed out of the water for a final moult. At this point the recently emerged adults are weak and soft and vunerable to predation. Close examination of reeds and grasses around ponds can occasionally reveal the remains of the shed skin called the exuviae.

Why then do some of us ‒ sometimes - continue to use that very slightly derogatory term grockle when we talk about them out of their hearing? Most likely it stems from the professional name of Grock or Grocko as he was sometimes called ‒ the most famous clown in the world . Born in Switzerland, Charles Wettach (1880 ‒ 1959), travelled the world with fi rst his circus and then his music hall acts, arriving in Britain before the outbreak of the Great War. Not only was he dubbed the king of clowns he was also perhaps the most colourfully dressed of them all. As fi rst the day-trippers from Lunnun and then the longer term holiday makers began to spill out of the steam trains from Paddington and Waterloo in their fineries, Devon s locals must have had a field day staring at these brightly attired arrivals from another world. Grockles! every one.

Oz - the German Shepherd on Wheels by Kerry Hornett

z is a very handsome German Shepherd Dog who is nearly 8 years old. He has suffered extreme ill health since his birth, and has been kept alive by the sheer determination of his owner Jan. The vets have advised Jan to have Oz put to sleep on a number of occasions, but both Oz and Jan share a stubborn determination to survive. Their partnership is really lovely to watch.

Oz has a heart murmur, and extreme digestion problems. He has to eat regular small meals, and his diet has to be carefully monitored. The wrong food will cause him to haemorrhage. Jan feeds him small, wet meals every few hours, including through the night. Jan spoon feeds the meal directly into his mouth, otherwise he will not eat. In addition he has a spinal problem, and bad hip dysplasia. I was introduced to Jan by Helen Eaglestone, a McTimoney and Massage therapist. Helen has been working with Oz for some time now,

and I have been really impressed at the results of her work. Jan wanted me to communicate with Oz about his eating habits, and about how he felt about his new wheels. Oz has a “wheelchair” which supports his rear end, and allows him to move around freely.

Oz is a wonderful character to communicate with. He gives short, blunt answers, and he knows exactly what he wants. Asked about his food he was very enthusiastic, but would obviously have liked a bit more variety. He understood the reason for the limited range. Asked why he had to be fed by hand, and only by Jan, he replied that she was his “mum” and that’s what mums do. I pointed out that all Jan’s other dogs were quite prepared to eat their own meals. I asked him whether he was capable of eating from the bowl, and he assured me that he could. When I spoke to Jan she said that she had tried just putting the bowl of food down for Oz to feed himself. Oz once refused to eat for nearly 3 days because he stubbornly insisted that Jan had to feed him. It was her role as his mum! Jan has agreed that she has made a rod for her own back by hand feeding him for so long. Unfortunately, because of Oz’s extreme digestion problems she cannot risk him not eating on a regular basis. Oz still gets his own way. Asked about the wheelchair he was extremely enthusiastic. He showed himself careering around a field, and chasing after his special ball. He was absolutely delighted that he could

get around as fast as the other dogs. Asked whether there was anywhere in particular he would like to be massaged in order to help his legs, he expressed a wish to be massaged on the inside of his rear legs, stretching out the long leg muscles. Helen has included this as part of her regular therapy. It was some months before I was invited to see Oz again. Unfortunately over the previous weekend I received an urgent call from Jan, because Oz had experienced some sort of seizure. The vets weren’t sure whether it was a stroke, or an inner ear “bleed”. He had been staggering around in circles, and his head was raised up and to the side. She felt that she might lose him this time. When I walked in and saw him I was amazed at how well he looked. Jan said that he had made an astonishing recovery as usual. In fact he was walking, and moving much better than he had at my first visit. When I communicated with him we were able to confirm a stroke because his eyesight and hearing on his left hand side had been slightly affected. I received an impression of a misting over the left eye, and a muffling of the hearing. Also he had pins and needles in his left front foot. We have asked Helen to include the foot in her regular massage. Jan told me that Oz rarely needed his wheels now when he went out for a walk. Since the stroke he hadn’t been able to use them, but on the morning of my visit he had insisted on walking with the other dogs for part of their walk. Helen is continuing with the McTimoney, and Oz cooperates fully with her so that she can reach the right areas for the massage. I have been convinced of the value of this alternative therapy. As a footnote Jan mentioned that she had, on two occasions, seen Oz stealing food from the bowl of her puppy. He clearly can eat dry food directly from the bowl, and surprisingly the fatty puppy food has had no ill effects. However he still insists that Jan feeds him his main meals. What a partnership! y first job as a newly qualified vet was in Sidmouth in 1953. Although situated in the middle of town it was almost entirely a farm practice. Dogs and cats were not often treated in those days and those who did were looked down on by other vets. The difficulty about having a practice on the coast is that you have only one way to go - inland. This means that you have to travel farther, and we did. Almost to Lyme Regis in the East, Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth in the West, and Dunkeswell and Plymtree in the North. All this I did in a beat up old Land Rover which I always reckoned must have been the first ever off the production line. The farms were mostly small, but they all seemed to make a living of sorts, and just as the land varied, from rich valley soil to meagre upland holdings, so did the clients. There was the gentry, the Aclands and the Clintons, and there were the poorest of farmers. Some were progressive. One farmer at East Budleigh milked 20 cows well, out of 30 acres. Others carried on as their forebears had for generations before. But they all called us in for the most minor injuries because, unlike today, our fees were modest.

Just as the farmers varied, so did the land. Along the rivers Axe Exe and Otter the land was fertile but the uplands were pretty poor and so were the farmers. To the west of Sidmouth and then on past Newton Poppleford was the bleak tract of Woodbury Common. But just before this was an area known as

Hawkerland. From this unforgiving land some weird characters managed to make a living, and yet they were some of the loveliest people you could hope to find. One of them was deaf and dumb, yet managed to farm his land well and, I always imagined, found solace with his many farm animals. You see, in those days almost all the farms kept all types of stock. Very few specialised as they do today. Within that stock all breeds were kept, so that it was a sheer joy to walk down the shippon and see all the different breeds of cow. His next door neighbour had lost the use of

The greatest character in Hawkerland was Farmer Kittle. His was the largest farm thereabouts and he liked you to know it. A short well-spread man he invariably wore a loud Harris Tweed suit and plus fours. I’d heard he was a one-time traveller, and he ran his farm with the aid of his daughter, Daisy, and her diminutive husband, who was also an Irish traveller. One day, after I had completed some mundane task for him, he said to me, “While you’m here” (which meant he did not expect to be charged), “While you’m here vet’nary just have a look at this cow for me. But, mind, her can be a bit ornery.” As we all walked through the shippon door I could see what he meant. She was a large Ayrshire cross with the widest spread of horns I had ever seen and an evil look in her eye. Up piped Daisy’s little husband in broad Irish, “I”ll hold’n for youse sorr! With that he rushed forward and took the cow by the nose. With a contemptuous flick of its head the cow flung him over our heads and into the dirt outside. No one moved. Then Farmer Kittle turned to his daughter and said casually “You hold’un Daisy”. Then Daisy, who was like the proverbial brick built public convenience, just stepped up to the cow and gripped the cow with her left hand. We had no more trouble. By the way, did I say, it had Wooden Tongue and Farmer Kittle had a bill after all.

By developing outdoor spaces and promoting healthy eating and exercise, then helping children make short animations to tell their stories, The Devon Carousel Project is engaging young people in learning experiences work on many levels at once. My favourite is ‘The Tree of Life’ - a collaborative animation made by families at Whipton Children's centre. The participants have created a lovely animated 'frieze' based on Klimt's Tree of Life. The project was launched as part of National Family Week in May 2010 and has already attracted wide ranging interest and support. For The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Woodland Trust has awarded the project 420 trees to plant in their allotment and wildlife garden. Another short film, 'The Old Lady and the Birds' was made with early years children in Stoke

While this kind of creative collaborative experience can benefit young children in every aspect of their development, it is also beneficial to parents who become involved, and their local communities. Early in 2012 the project is coming to other parts of East Devon offering taster sessions in Whimple, Poltimore, Broadclyst, Rockbeare and Clyst Vale and the hope for later in the year is to develop coastal activities. N THE 1920s the world famous explorer, Torquay-born Colonel Percy Fawcett lived in Exeter, then Seaton and ﬁ nally Stoke Canon, whilst planning what turned out to be his ﬁ nal - and fatal - expedition. He and his small expedition vanished without trace during an attempt to discover a fabled lost city (which he only ever referred to as Z ) deep in the jungles of Brazil s Matto Grosso.

Lost with him was his son, Jack, 22 and Jack s best friend, Raleigh Rimmell, the son of a Seaton doctor. Both young men - like Fawcett himself - were crack shots and learned their skills by shooting .22 riﬂes at the tiny squares of white enamel set into the tops of pillar boxes which show that a collection has been made. The white targets turned blue when they were fractured by the bullets. The lads - both in their late teens at that time - were eventually apprehended by a special constable in Seaton - with Raleigh being ﬁ ned ten shillings for wilful damage. The trio left Devon for the last time from Exeter St. David s station in March 1924, bound for Liverpool and the Atlantic crossing. They each took their guns, whilst

Living and working in Los Angeles for a while (where Jack tried to ﬁ nd work as a movie extra), the call had gone out from the Mary Pickford Studios for a genuine English cricket bat that the great star was to wield in her production of Little Lord Fauntleroy. The bat was provided by

Jack - the nearest he ever came to ﬁ nding fame in Hollywood - and eventually went with him on that final journey to the impenetrable jungles of Brazil. In one of his last letters to his mother, Jack wrote: When Raleigh and I are unusually fed-up we talk of what we will do when we return to Seaton, in the Spring of 1927. We intend to buy motor-cycles and really enjoy a good holiday in Devon looking up all our friends and visiting the old haunts. Colonel Fawcett, Jack and Raleigh were last seen leaving a spot they called Dead Horse Camp - a place so deep in the jungle that they logged it as Lat. 11 degrees 43 S. and 53 degrees 35 W. It is the point at which many subsequent expeditions began their own quests to ﬁ nd the missing explorers. Alas, they were never seen again and the lost city remains to be found, along with Fawcett s maps and papers. By John Fisher

The Income dilemma How to generate income from your capital which will keep pace with inflation whilst providing your investment with the potential for some capital growth is probably one of the most important issues facing those in retirement. The problems facing many retirees are inflation, longevity, volatile stockmarkets, income withdrawals and investment choice. There are 2 major considerations that you need to bear in mind when planning your portfolio. Firstly, the ongoing level of income is very important - research has found that if you take very heavy withdrawals from your portfolio, it is likely that your capital will run out much quicker. This is something that has been known for some time, but just how sensitive this can be has probably not been recognised. For instance, an historic portfolio investing from 1972 taking 7% inflation linked withdrawals could run out after 12 years, whilst a 5% inflation linked withdrawal rate could last for 23 years (data supplied from Fidelity). It would appear

that you need to closely monitor your portfolio and withdrawals and it may be especially important to reduce withdrawals when stockmarkets are falling. Again, this all points to the need to have regular portfolio reviews to ensure that you remain on track. It is also important to remain invested if you are in a medium risk portfolio. In the past, some investors have reacted to stockmarket drops by dis-investing and moving into cash. By taking this strategy you crystallise your losses and also have to time your return to the market and if your timing is out you will have lost out on the market rebounding once the stockmarket improves. The end result is that it is very difficult to regain your losses. Market timing is notoriously difficult and even the experts can get it badly wrong. If you ve been invested for some years then the effect of stockmarket falls is less important and therefore its less tempting to make changes, but for those who have recently invested the impact of volatility can have a greater impact. allocation. The traditional investment approach for those going into retirement was to slowly move away from equities and to buy cash and bonds for retirement. However, with retirement lasting for much longer than before (possibly 30 years or more) it appears that a moderate to medium risk approach to investment is more appropriate. Investing in cash and fixed interest over the long term means that your portfolio and your income will be viciously attacked by inflation. A medium risk portfolio will include an element of UK and overseas equities, property, bonds as well as cash and fixed interest. By investing in a diversified portfolio you reduce risk and provide the potential for increasing income and underlying capital growth. Once again, monitoring your asset allocation is an important factor; if a portfolio is left

and not reviewed it is likely that one aspect of your portfolio could unbalance your asset allocation which could add more volatility to your portfolio. Therefore, it is useful to review the portfolio and re-balance the asset allocation and this should happen, possibly on a yearly basis. Using web based technology we can ascertain clients risk tolerance and match them to a model portfolio which we have constructed either for growth or income. We can monitor the underlying funds and provide on-going advice on any changes that might be needed in terms of asset allocation or performance.
