Autumn beckons! It's always sad to see the summer come to an end - what a truly great summer we've had this year. All the fine weather must have provided a much needed shot in the arm for event organisers, especially after the rainy summer season in 2012. One success story this year has been East Devon Hub (there's a South Devon also). There are now well over 2,350 local organisations registered to use this web platform to promote their events. If you take a look at the East Devon Hub website, you'll see there are more local events on this website than any other for this region by a large margin. In effect, what the 'Hub' has done is to open it's doors to every event bearing organisation, from the largest tourist destinations, to the smallest clubs, societies and charities. What's really helped is the transparency it provides. Website events on the Hub can be pulled down into the event listings in this magazine. You're also guaranteed inclusion of Hub events in the Diary magazines we produce. So for instance, the Sidmouth Diary will include ALL events for the Sid Valley totally free, providing they've been added into the Hub first and they are legitimate events. If you're not on the Hub, just Google East Devon Hub
and register to enable your events to be broadcast to a very large audience, free. We always welcome applications from writers, photographers, artists, and we're now on the lookout for budding fashion models for our photo shoots. You don't have to be a professional, if you'd like to get into this profession, we can give you valuable exposure to help with your portfolio. Just send in your pics to enquiries@ prestige-media .co.uk Our search for a new recruit as a companion to Jack Alfie, our new recruit (our resident Jack Russell) has been successful. We now have a fine Parson's Jack Russell puppy from North Tawton. New apprentice Lauren has also joined the team (our previous apprentice Charlotte has been taken on permanently). There are now over 935 outlets for the magazines across South Devon, Exeter and East Devon regions (don't forget you can read all issues online - see left). All the best. Nigel Jones @CoastCountryMag

Colin Blunstone, with one of the great ‘pop’ voices, plus the manic keyboards of Rod Argent are the Zombies. It’s a cracking ‘live’ show from the lads from St Albans and the hits just keep coming! Lots of them… from that little 1964pop classic ‘She’s Not There’ to Colin’s solo stuff…’Say You Don’t Mind’ and his memorable reworking of the Jimmy Ruffin/Tamla hit ‘What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted?’ If that’s not enough packed into a two-hour show there are all those Argent stormers including the show-stopping rock anthem ‘Hold Your Head Up’, a liberal sprinkling of songs from the band’s famed swansong album 'Odessey & Oracle' and a selection of new material from their latest album 'Breathe Out, Breathe In', which is also rather good! With energy levels that bely their years they are still a great band after 50 years on the road, and counting… BOX OFFICE: 01392 665938 or book on-line at www.intelligent-tickets.com (5% surcharge per booking)

Friday 11th to Sunday 13th October LIVE MUSIC as part of the Budleigh Salterton Food & Drink Festival – The Public Hall, Station Rd, B. Salterton, EX9 6RJ www.budleighfoodanddrink.org.uk
Friday night kicks off with Devon’s oldest Morris dancers, the ever-colourful Exeter Morris men - Hal-an-Tow and all that - followed by one of the undoubted successes of the recent Bictonfest extravaganza, acoustic guitar/vocal girl duo Sound of the Sirens (check out some recent ‘live’ clips by googling their Facebook page). On Saturday evening festival co-ordinator Simon Blissett will be singing some of his favourite numbers and talking about his recent experience auditioning for BBC1’s “The Voice”, followed by - and true to the festival’s mandate to ‘keep it local’ - Saturday’s top-of-the-bill artist veteran bluesman and well-respected blues-harp virtuoso Ian Briggs with his band the Supervampers. Some great ‘live’ music to aid the digestion and more to come, apparently, as we go to press, so check the website (see above) and/or the East Devon Hub for updates.
If you want to play tribute to one of the great bands of the last 40 years then do it well or not at all… for my money that’s just what these guys deliver! The sound’s authentic; the look’s authentic, down to the Brian May-look-alike Pre-Raphaelite hair-do! Lots of pyrotechnics, lighting effects and general razzamatazz there to enhance the enjoyment rather than mask poor musicianship - these guys are good! Check out their website for some sound bites and video clips of what’s in store and get along to the Seaton Gateway in October, which is a well-run venue with a good atmosphere and, of importance I think on a Saturday night, a well-run, well-staffed easy access bar! Thursday 24th October STEVE FEARING Otterton Mill, Otterton, EX9 7HG www.stephenfearing.com An overdue 5th visit for this wonderful Canadian musician and multiple JUNO award-winner. Stephen's distinctive folk/roots sound has long made him one of our most popular acts and one of the foremost performing singer/ songwriters in his home country. Mixing powerful lyrics, creative arrangements, brilliant guitar playing and onstage charm, Stephen has won a loyal international fan-base. Tickets: £13.50 (price covers the music only). FEATURED VENUE
The Public Hall
"The Diverse Venue of Budleigh” The Public Hall in Station Rd, Budleigh Salterton is an all-purpose venue serving the town of Budleigh Salterton, which of late has hosted an impressive programme of ‘live’ music events. Equipped with raised, curtained stage and basic theatre lighting the hall has two large dressing rooms, separate bar area, well-equipped kitchen and toilets, and has already hosted sell-out concerts by Clare Teal, Beverley Craven and T’Pau amongst others.
legless, the big Christmas hit of 1975, plus some favourite blues, gospel, rock and country classics. A busy musician, Andy also plays with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, and tours regularly with Eric Clapton. Lastly on Sunday 10th November guitar legend Martin Barre brings his 6-piece band to the venue.
Kiki Dee, accompanied by guitar virtuoso Carmelo Luggeri,
Lead guitar with Jethro Tull for 44 years, Martin’s distinctive playing has been a major factor in their long and successful career, which has produced album sales exceeding 60 million units worldwide.
on Saturday 5th October, performing an eclectic selection of favourite covers, recent album tracks plus the familiar hits such as Amoureuse, I’ve got the music in me, Star and Don’t go breakin’ my heart.
Martin’s playing on Aqualung earned him many plaudits while his work on the album Crest of a Knave earned him a Grammy in 1988.
Future concert plans include:
On Sunday 27th October founder member of Cardiff-based
Amen Corner Andy Fairweather Low and his band the Low Riders perform hits from the band’s back catalogue such as Bend Me, Shape Me, High in the Sky and (If Paradise is) half as nice, songs from his A&M period such as Reggae Tune, La Booga Rooga and the pop classic Wide-eyed and
Martin has worked with many artists including Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Gary Moore, Jo Bonamassa and Mark Knopfler but with Tull currently on sabbatical, Martin’s band plays a mix of his favourite blues and rock standards seasoned with classic tracks from the Tull catalogue.

Nick Broomfield, proprietor of The Marle Gallery, Axminster One of my favourite moments from Ab Fab was when Edina walks in to a typically intimidating Cork Street Gallery, to be greeted by a rather snooty, just-out-ofnappies member of staff who greets her from her oh-so-tidy desk with the smallest of cracked smiles, before resuming her ohso-important work. Edina, all the worst for drink and, well, being Edina, retorts with “you’re just a shop girl, so drop the attitude”. She then proceeds to buy up half the gallery. The thing about an art gallery is it has to have a certain atmosphere. There should be a sense of theatre. Seriously good art deserves a seriously good environment. Acres of white walls and beautiful lighting are important if you want to show a picture off at its best. The danger is that such environments can be very intimidating. Stepping into a vast white cube with nothing but pictures on the walls and a beautiful young thing behind a tiny little desk, feels for many of us, like walking into an exam question. For all those who know what I’m talking about – I empathise. As owner of the Marle Gallery in Axminster, which is admittedly a vast cube with nothing but pictures on the walls, I fully understand your concerns. All I can say is that I am neither beautiful nor young. If middle aged, balding, and pleased to have a chat is more your cup of tea, then please drop in. But seriously, it’s a difficult one. My gallery is not a typical seaside
22
gallery full of pictures of boats and seascapes with a few knickknacks under £10 because some business advisor has said that’s what sells. At the Marle Gallery we take art, artists and art lovers seriously. We have art that challenges, art that delights in its freshness and uniqueness. Art from artists who are Royal Academicians, local artists, London artists, international artists. Art that is £50 and art that is £5000. The thing that binds it all together is that we love it and we want to share it with you. And we can’t do that unless you take the step to open the door and come on in. Relax. I’m quite nice really. The music is good. We don’t pounce on you expecting you to a) say something clever, b) get out your cheque book or c) profess to be personal friends with Damien Hirst. In fact, once inside you’ll probably have a revelation. The whiteness of the walls. The brightness of the lights. The wow-ness of the art. It’s all there for you. It’s all done to make sure we can do more than give you a knick-knack and another picture of a boat in a harbour. It’s all there to bring a little bit of the wonderful, exciting world of seriously good art to a tiny corner of the west country.

Janet East is the proprietor at Yellingham Farm, also running a Farmhouse B&B establishment www.yellinghamfarm.co.uk 01404 850272
by Janet East of Yellingham Farm
Diversification... or Sell
A
fter the dreadful Foot and Mouth epidemic, meat prices crashed and the wool prices continued to be pathetic. If we were to survive at Yellingham we had to diversify. I had always wanted to run a B and B and it seemed that the opportunity was now lying at my feet. Adjoining the main farmhouse was a lovely red-brick built, old-fashioned cow shippon, complete with the chains to which the cows were fastened during milking, the concrete curved feeding trough and the dugout channel into which the cows’ ablutions were collected and drained away. A very quiet and, in its own way, beautiful, serene building, which I am sure could tell many a story. But with a large collection of modern, large, spacious barns, the cow shippon merely housed a few chickens. It was ideal for conversion. The conversion maintained all the wonderful characteristics of the building, but included modern facilities required by the everdiscerning guest. Long gone are the days of trotting down a corridor to use a shared bathroom, which invariably is being occupied by some youngster who needs at least an hour both ends of the day, showering, Bed blow-drying, make-up on, perfume, false & eyelashes, to name a Breakfast few ! So my first guests booked in... excited, worried, nervous, but ready. Unusually, they were both blind and had been visiting Sidmouth Folk Festival. Arriving by taxi, they clamoured out, laden with luggage and goodness knows how many bags, clearly representing good days shopping at the Festival. After a slow but careful and detailed tour of the facilities and rooms, tea was served. My first guests were in and settled. Before retiring, the wife asked me if I could look after a large carrier bag of jams, pickles and cakes which she had purchased at the Festival. No worries.
I placed the goodies out in our “backhouse”, which is a long, cool, old-fashioned larder, lined with slate shelves and stone floor – ideal for the storage of everything from cold meats, to preserves, and everything edible which needed that chilled environment to survive. Better than a fridge any day. All was well. Time for bed, just the dogs to put out. Back door open and they all trot out, same time, same routine, and well, so I thought. They all trot in except Jill, my old border collie, who, since retiring, takes life steadily, even her last pee at night! So no alarm bells when she didn’t arrive with the rest of the tribe. But after 10 minutes or so of calling, I did start to be a trifle concerned. I had every right to be!
Cake cooked, smelling divine, even in the early hours of the morning ... on a wire, out the back, with Jill definitely locked out in her run. The next morning, I carried on as normal, served breakfast to my unassuming guests, worried as to how to break the news. Did I need to tell her? Yes. No. Yes, I must. It had to be done. “I am afraid I have a bit of bad news” All went very quiet. “My dog ate your cake last night”. No messing, straight out with the truth. Silence, a punishing, long silence, when no one spoke. Disbelief I suppose. “But I have made another one which I guarantee will taste just as good, she didn’t touch anything else I promise... she doesn’t like piccalilli!” The joke went down with a thud – I wanted to be swallowed up by the floor. Maybe B and B wasn’t for me after all. Gradually, normal service resumed and we parted amicably and I got paid as well. Relief!
You wouldn’t have thought lemon cake was the sort of stuff a dog would eat. Their usual range of food is hardly so refined. Jill appeared, smiling, with cling fi lm in her mouth with a little white sticker with the writing “Lemon Cake”. Oh my goodness, she had crept out to the backhouse, spotted the goodies and the rest is history. What now, it was 11.00 at night. I set to and made a cake, but the next dilemma was what shape was the cake – being blind, my guest would definitely have felt it when she purchased it.
Later that night I had a phone call from my guests who obviously during their long journey back to London, started to see the funny side of the previous evening’s events. “Janet, maybe it was a blessing that the dog ate my cake, as your lemon cake was to die for”. We both laughed. I cannot look at or eat lemon cake without being reminded of that dreadful first night, welcoming guests to my new B and B. Thank goodness Jill didn’t eat the cling fi lm or label – the outcome might have been very different!
“Edward, help, what shape is a lemon cake?” My happy, tranquil evening was in tatters. “Oblong I would think” he said with a smile “I’m not smiling, neither should you be”. I did not need this.

RADIO DEVON 9.00 - 12.00 weekdays
STAR GAZING with
Judi Spiers
Well-known presenter, broadcaster and dyed-in-the-wool Devonian Judi Spiers gives COAST & COUNTRY readers a glimpse into the lives of the great and good.
Joss Stone “JOSS STONE THE SINGER TALKS FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT THE TERRIFYING PLOT TO MURDER HER” screamed the headlines in a national newspaper recently. Actually Joss had spoken to me some two/ three weeks beforehand on BBC Radio Devon referring to the recent chilling events as “a bit harsh” before adding,
“It’s something to add to the tapestry of life something to tell the grandchildren!” The nationals picked up on it the following day not bothering to name check where they heard the interview!
“I can walk my dogs, then make a record and then go and see my mum for a cup of tea, how nice is that? It’s like a normal job.” When I point out that it isnʼt a ʻnormalʼ job and most young talented musicians in her position appear to be after the fame and fortune, appearing on endless reality and chat shows she replies,
“ I don’t think they know what they are getting into. It’s like you want something until you’ve got it and then you think that was a bad idea. It’s nice to sing and move people and make music and create and play in front of 20,000 people, that is
amazing but all the other stuff they’re all chasing after I don’t think it’s much fun not for me.” On the two occasions Joss has come into the studio, it has been with ʻmumʼ Wendy of ʻMamma Stonesʼ fame. No agents or producers required, just the result of having bumped in to one or the other of them. I can tell you that is not the usual rigmarole we have to go through! No flash cars to bring her either.
“I’d rather spend my money on a good string session,” she laughs, “than on a car which I’m just going to drive into the hedge anyway!”
“I just want to be proud of what I do.” Doing what she does also means not touring, at least in England, preferring to appear monthly at Mamma Stones with guest singers like Beverley Knight.
“I’ve made a decision and I hope people won’t take offence; it’s because I love England and I love living here and I love my home.”
She’s sold over 13 million records, but after Joss Stone spent her teenage years in Devon - she wouldn’t live anywhere else.
But hey ho, weʼre local so it doesnʼt matter! Well actually it does to Joss who is a Devon girl through and through and wouldnʼt have it any other way. From early days playing the Tiverton Motel to 3 Grammy nominations, Brit Awards and performing with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Tom Jones and Mick Jagger and selling over 13 million, records she is still remarkably un-starry and wouldnʼt live anywhere else but Devon.
26
People in the business have tried to push her in other directions and to be fair sheʼs tried doing it their way and it didnʼt make her happy.

conservation of the oceans. To that end his fi lm company has made ʻTears of a Mermaidʼ featuring his beautiful daughter Hanna, a leading underwater model, or as Andy proudly says, “the world’s first mermaid!” Still recording his latest single, Beautiful, is a mile away from the music associated with the legendary bass player and songwriter for one of the greatest rock bands of all time
itʼs much more R&B and mellow. “For me” he says, “I have to live in the present and look into the future and that was always my philosophy with Free.” If you are wondering if he still performs those great Free anthems, “There are certain songs” he assures me “that if I didnʼt play I would be in physical danger!”
Michael Simkins
Andy Fraser For someone as young and talented in this day and age, Joss a one off, sheʼs hit the big time and has come out relatively unscathed...unlike Andy Fraser of Free. Andy was in the area recently playing with his protégée, an extremely gifted young musician called Tobi, and Chris Spedding, another legendary guitarist who had a huge hit with ʻMotorbikinʼ. A true rock survivor Andy, nevertheless, went through the mill and has survived Aids and a rare cancer. At the age of 13/14 he was going across London on his own, missing the last train home playing with Ska and black bands in their 20ʼs giving his mother a heart attack. As a classically trained pianist he played the old ʻpub pianoʼ his mother bought for him, “like a typist playing Beethoven!” adding, “It wasnʼt until I got a guitar and transferred everything I knew and realized how much I did know and that you were meant to express yourself... why didnʼt someone give me a clue before that?”
Alexis Korner spotted his potential and introduced him to Paul Rodgers, Paul Kossof and Simon Kirke the rest is rock history.
“I had just left John Mayall and I could see how they did things and I could see these guys couldn’t count past ten!” Referring to himself as ʻobnoxiousʼ he declared himself the leader and they got a record deal straight away. Of course co-writing ʻAlright Nowʼ didnʼt hurt either. He also wrote ʻEvery Kinda People,ʼ a hit for Robert Palmer, whilst other songs have been recorded by Chaka Khan, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Etta James although as he told me:
“I’m not the guy to ring when Diana Ross needs a song at 10 in the morning. All the songs were written as therapy for me!” Well the therapy obviously worked, Andy has really turned his life around and is now a campaigner for the environment particularly the
Well if Andy and Joss have cautionary tales about the music business, Michael Simkins certainly does about the acting profession. His work has included everything from Shakespeare at the National to Mamma Mia! in the West End, Mike Leighʼs fi lm Topsy Turvey and the Iron Lady. He has also smashed crates at Nissan UK, and compered trade shows for Vauxhall cars! He is regular on radio 4ʼs Quote Unquote and Broadcasting House, and has a string of best selling books including his latest The Rules of Acting, described by Stephen Fry as “hugely entertaining” and Tim Rice as “terrifyingly accurate.” The biggest tip in the book is “read the whole script.” What follows is an hysterical story about an actor who didnʼt and ended up playing a nude scene with a pig!
licking her face! Even if you arenʼt in the theatre this book will make you laugh out loud. Oh and never ask an actor: “How do you learn your lines?” “Have I seen you in anything on telly?” And given that at any one time 92% of actors are out of work “Resting at the moment?” So I have no idea what he is doing next.

Fine dining at Combe House Having never dined at Combe House before, I was keen to visit, being aware of the many accolades bestowed on their restaurant. The setting is fantastic of course - the welcome was both unpretentious and friendly. Prior to dining, canapés were presented in the bar/lounge area alongside our drinks. The restaurant is lovely, we were placed alongside one of the mullioned windows, so we could enjoy the glorious, unspoilt countryside views. I
have to say you really get the full visual experience at Combe House. The Tasting Menu was chosen on this occasion and you really are advised to take it with the accompanying wines to enjoy the courses to their fullest. Unfortunately we didn't have the space to list the wines that accompany the Tasting Menu, but rest assured that no effort had been in the pursuit of excellence both with wines and food. Their tasting menu provided a veritable cornucopia of delight, particular
favourites were the scallops, quail and lamb (see left column). Much of the food they serve comes from Combe House's own kitchen gardens. Service in the restaurant is first class and the food is really excellent. Combe House is a very special place - actually it's a real asset to the East Devon area. If you haven't visited Combe House, you're missing a real treat, because not only do you get to enjoy top notch foods and wines, but the setting is truly unforgettable. Editor.

o achieve the most elegant look for any room in the home, a colour palette which is centralised around a range of neutral tones is key. Creams, whites, stones and greys are all fantastic colours to use as a base, however the splash of an accent colour can really make a statement. The good thing about using such neutral base colours is that any colour goes, with the exception of red on whites. Fuchsia, duck egg blues, aqua, lime, coral and ochre colours are all superb accent colours to go for. The other reason it’s a good idea to choose one accent over neutrals is that you can easily have a change now and again if you fancy creating a whole new look without spending too much money. For instance, if you have a spectrum of stone coloured base items such as carpet, sofas and curtains, then just by simply adding a fuchsia striped armchair, fuchsia scatter cushions, a rug and perhaps a blind, then you suddenly have a completely different room. If you decided on a new seasons colour the following year, it’s going to be extremely cost effective to replace a few cushions, blind and a rug rather than starting from scratch. You could always opt for a sofa with loose covers also so that you need only replace the covers if you’d like a change, rather than the whole piece of furniture.

although they can also be used on walls, floors and in paintings. They have a lovely soft and worn out look about them and come in litre pots priced at around £16.95. Choosing an interesting fabric can also be a good way of linking pieces together, such as a blind and some cushions/an armchair. Mulberry always have some fantastic designs available in wonderful colours and interesting images, such as the popular Flying Ducks fabric. Most recently they have brought out a fabulous new design called ‘Harvest Hare’ which is just delightful, and lends itself to a background colour scheme of greys. Other accessories such as throws, vases, storage boxes and lighting can also be a great way of incorporating new colours and designs. Carefully chosen lighting is very important and can really enhance any colours that you have accented, if done correctly. It’s incredibly easy to design a room around an accent colour, all you have to do is to choose one and then get going!

D
uring the deluges of spring I expressed the hope of a summer of love in Flatbeare. It was not to be; the summertime was marred by several unsavoury happenings.
The ice cream wars left a bad taste in the mouth. Landlord Jackʼs idea of selling ices in the Pig & Trampoline was not well received in certain quarters; just two days after the grand opening his tutti frutti was allegedly tampered with. No solid evidence identified the perpetrators, but the fi nger of suspicion pointed towa rds Piggatonis mobile ice cream emporium which frequently visits Flatbeare in the summer to the accompaniment of intensely irritating musical chimes. Likewise, solid evidence was never found concerning the alleged defacement of Tony Piggatoniʼs van. Letʼs hope the cold blasts of autumn resolve this sticky situation. More serious was the rift in the archery club since errant arrows can cause more damage than flying cornets. The sensational banning of Sty Sluggett from the summerʼs showcase competition, the Tarquin Dimble Perpetual Broken Arrow Trophy, sparked an unfortunate series of events which are best forgotten. Suffice to say that Henry has left hospital but may never regain total use of his twanging fi nger. As feared, the tug of war competition at the August Bank Holiday Fayre was marred by claims and counter claims of performance enhancing gloves, axle grease, and men trying to muscle in on the womenʼs event and vice versa. Old Silas had an unenviable umpiring task as his eyesightʼs not good now, though this year he was greatly helped
by Ardley Chic by his eagle eyed (and nosed) sheepdog Spot. Nonetheless, we did have some magnificent weather. I look back with nostalgia to July when our idyllic village recorded a temperature of 28.7°C in the shade of Big Ben - not that upcountry timepiece but our very own Ben Crumbling, whose BMI would be astronomical were he not 6ʼ7” tall. His enormous physique earns him a very good living in heatwave conditions. Gardeners pay him handsomely to stand sunny side of their prized shade loving plants and heʼs in great demand as a parasol at afternoon garden parties.

The downside was that the Flat level fell so low in August that the annual coot race turned into a farcical four hour marathon. Many became becalmed and nobody was quite sure which had won since it was dark before the race fi nished. Rule books were consulted, mayhem ensued, some spectators were severely wettened and several coots were injured. Donʼt panic, the coots are plastic. Now that the summer heat has passed, perhaps tempers may cool. I suggested to Jack that a peace and reconciliation evening should be held where all could air their grievances and drink together in harmony, but he pleaded that he wasnʼt insured for such a hazardous event in the bar. Instead he intends holding a harmonious barn dance in the beer garden. Iʼm not convinced of the wisdom of this, for Iʼve seen many a fracas result from a carelessly stripped willow. Besides, it will probably rain.

East Devon Coast & Country magazine visits:
S
eaton’s setting is truly magical as you approach from the top of Seaton Down Hill. It never ceases to impress that’s for sure, the whole expanse of the Axe valley disappearing northwards, whilst to the right it opens out into the magnificent Lyme Bay. There’s such an expanse of countryside in one panoramic vista that the camera really doesn’t do it justice.
It’s no surprise that the Romans came here and settled, because the valley’s sheltered from the prevailing winds with marshes for wildfowl, salmon and seatrout in the river and fertile soil for crops (see previous issue online - Honeyditches ).
Seaton Seaton has a peaceful charm of its own and the town’s pedestrianised centre allows you to amble about in a relaxed manner, enjoy shops or have a coffee outside in the sunshine. Over the last few years, Seaton’s been experiencing major changes such as the addition of a large supermarket. There are new businesses coming into the town, introducing new vigour and flair, which is welcome by all and certainly augurs well for the future. These new businesses include The Shed, Amore and Totally Polished. Let’s wish them all the best with their new enterprises.
EAST DEVON

I recently met up with Edward Willis Fleming of the Axe Riverside Company, who’s very optimistic about the future of the town. He said “Seaton could have between £50 to £100 million invested in it over the next five years on the various sites available, which can only be good news”. He also goes on to say “there are plans for a complete face lift at the seafront, and in a few years Seaton could be East Devon’s most vibrant and optimistic seaside towns.” Seaton certainly has an awful lot going for it, when you consider the sublime estuary and countryside of the valley. Not forgetting the

The beautiful and unspoilt Axe Valley - long may it remain so!
Axe Valley Wetlands - a real haven for birdlife, Seaton also has its own harbour and moorings, a tramway, unique flora and fauna in the Undercliff Walk, a golf course, a lovely beach, and not forgetting the new Information Centre which makes available a wealth of information for both visitors and residents alike - the list goes on. Also coming soon is the Discovery Centre which will be run by the Devon Wildlife Trust and the Stop Way Line - a long distance walking and cycling route running from Seaton and finishing in Weston -Super-Mare, covering over 70 miles through Devon and Somerset.
Seaton’s also not short on great local amenities with the renowned Colyton Grammar school just up the road and train links 5 miles up the valley in Axminster - it’s extremely well served. On the opposite side of the river Axe lies Axmouth, a quiet village about a 1/2 a mile up from the seafront. It’s easy to spot from the Seaton side of the valley, as the tower of St Michael’s church is easily recognisable in the distance. It’s a small village with a neat stream running down the side of the road, and has a couple of pubs, a church, community orchard, a campsite and to the north

east it’s overlooked by an ancient hillfort. In the 13-14th century Axmouth was a port of considerable importance and was said to have 14 public houses. Don’t forget that back in those days the pebble spit blocking the mouth didn’t exist and the river wasn’t silted up, so ships could be brought in from open water to safe harbour. The Phoenicians sailed in the river Axe, and Axmouth was a significant port in Roman times. Ancient roadways all led to the harbour and the Fosse Way ended at Axmouth. The Danes landed

an army under Anlaf in 937, but they were defeated in a large battle at Axminster by king Athelstan. In medieval times, monks of Newenham and Sherborne fostered the harbour’s growth until in the 14th century, when heavy storms caused part of the Haven Cliff to fall, which partially blocked the estuary, and the shingle bank started to build up, which in turn resulted in silt being deposited in the estuary. Axmouth Bridge was opened in 1877 and has the honour of being the oldest concrete bridge in England. Incidentally if you’re a history buff, books on Seaton and Axmouth are detailed higher up on this page. Axmouth harbour now is home to several local fishermen, Seaton
Sailing Club and the Seaton Canoe and Kayak Club. If you own a kayak, I can thoroughly recommend a trip up the Axe estuary. On the quay, there’s a great angling tackle shop, very useful if you have any requirements for beach/boat fishing as they have a wide selection of baits and don’t miss the cafe next door - they do a great bacon and egg sandwich. We certainly hope these pages will help you discover what Seaton and Axmouth has to offer. This feature will be permanently online in our digital version of COAST & COUNTRY and it will also linked to the popular East Devon Hub what’s on website which now has over 2,340 organisations registered and using this events information platform. FRESH , SUSTAINABLE and LOCALLY CAUGHT FISH at:
Left to right: Fishermen Dan Colquhoun, Nigel Birt and John Wallington at their retail outlet at Miller's Farm Shop, Kilmington.
Set up by two local commercial fishermen from Axmouth in Seaton. Their idea was to fish and catch sustainably in Lyme Bay and bring the fish direct from their boats to the Fish Shack and direct to the customer.
The two boats that run from Axmouth Harbour, skippered by John Wallington (Outcast) and Nigel Birt (KT-SAM)
The Lyme Bay fish shack is run by a friendly local team. John Wallington has been in the industry for 15 years and is well known and respected as an excellent Bass fisherman and chartered skipper. Working along side him also is Nigel Birt. More recent to the industry, Nigel works as the fishermen's apprentice. Behind the counter at their shop at Millers Farm Shop in Kilmington, Dan Colquhoun works as the team's fishmonger. He was bought up in the fishing village of Beer and has spent his whole life around the fishing industry. Their fishing methods involve using rod and line and static gear, this means that the fish landed is in superb condition and any undersize fish are put back. The team catch a variety of fish including Bass, Pollack, Cod, Mackerel, Black Bream, Crabs, and Lobsters. They also work very closely with other local fishermen who supply them with hand dived Scallops, Plaice, Skate and Dover Soles etc. Nigel and John successfully fish Lyme Bay sustainably whilst also bringing the customer the best quality fresh fish at great prices.

rill Farm was bought by Romy Fraser (founder of Neal’s Yard Remedies) in 2006. In addition to transforming the farm into an example of productive organic farming, Romy set up the Trill Trust to help realise her aspirations for education. A former teacher, Romy has had a long-standing interest in helping young people to learn more about the relationship between the health of our natural environments, and human health and well-being. So far, the Trust has been running a variety of short courses at Trill Farm and offering nature-based EAST DEVON
activities for schools and other groups throughout the year. Next year, the Trust will be launching and piloting a new flagship project, a residential ‘Fellowship programme’ for young adults. This will be a kind of alternative ‘gap year’, an opportunity to learn new skills, discover new interests and capabilities, and reflect on what will be useful and meaningful careers in this century. Dr Rhys Kelly, a university lecturer who is helping to design the fellowship programme, explains a little more:

“These are quite challenging times for many young people, not just in the UK but across many parts of Europe. There are high rates of youth unemployment, and the cost of education is increasing significantly. At the same time, it is becoming clearer that issues like climate change and energy security require us to think carefully - as individuals and societies - about what we should invest our time, resources and talents in. We want to create a programme for young adults that will enable them understand some of the most important environmental, economic and political issues that will shape their lives in the coming decades, so they can make informed choices about what education or work they might choose in the future. We also want to enable young people to learn about the possibilities of and potential for more sustainable ways continued overleaf...

A DISAPPEARING WAY OF LIFE
Salmon Fishing on the Exe
Produced in association with Topsham Museum
THE RIVER EXE has been a great source of salmon over the centuries, in fact salmon was once so prolific that a clause was regularly inserted in the indentures of apprentices, that they were not obliged to eat it more often than three times a week. One of the great tragedies in recent years has been the decline of migratory fish in our river systems, in particular sea trout and the mighty salmon, which has to be one of the most impressive fish ever to grace our rivers. The river Exe still has seasonal runs of salmon, but the quantity and size of fish is a shadow of it’s former self. Up and down the UK many netting licences are being bought off in the attempt to conserve dwindling stocks and much work is being done to improve habitats within river systems for breeding and juvenile fish stocks. A major and persistent problems that these migratory fish have is netting at sea, where modern factory ships literally vacuum up massive quantities.
Netting in the Exe Estuary
Licenses for salmon netting
The traditional way that salmon are caught in the estuary is that of Seine netting. Basically a very long and fairly shallow net, controlled top and bottom by ropes running along the whole length. The top rope is suspended by a series of equidistant floats, whilst the bottom rope has equidistant weights, thus allowing the net to be suspended vertically in the water.
Netting is now strictly controlled, and there are only three Seine licences allowed. They’re issued by the Environment Agency to individuals and not boats and cost £380 for the year. It’s a requirement that all fish are tagged and an annual return for the fish caught is sent to the environment agency.
Various ways of laying the net were employed, but generally the net would be thrown out from the boat whilst rowing to enclose a circular area. The net could either be retrieved by hauling back into the boat, or by pulling both ends to the bank. Seine netting’s a time consuming and laborious process, and the basic premise is that there would be fish lying in wait in the chosen section of estuary, but this would depend on tides and water flow levels in the river. Lower salmon stocks mean that the whole netting process is even less productive, but of course, the value of wild salmon these days is extremely high.

Exe fishing boats There is one purpose-built Exe salmon fishing boat that can be seen at Topsham Museum. In the 1920s there were over 20 boats in the estuary that brought in 4,000 salmon annually.
Eisca (Exe) in Celtic meant ‘river full of fish’ The Roman name for Exeter - Isca Dumnoniorum comes from Eisca (river full of fish) and Dumnonii who were the local people inhabiting the region when the Romans invaded.
The fishermen Topsham has many families connected to the salmon fishing on the Exe, names inlcuding Pym, May, Voysey, Trout, Newman as well as many other families who regularly formed part of the crew.
The dangers of eating farmed Salmon
Whether you eat salmon or not, it’s impor tant to know that the farmed salmon available in your local supermarket is the piscine equivalent of batter y chicken in that these fish are caged and fed on pellets. Whether this concerns you or not, it’s impor tant to know that these metho ds bring with them all the disad vanta ges of factor y farming: Farmed salmon: 1) Have up to 30 times the number of sea lice 2) Have upto 7 times the levels of PCBs as wild salmon. 3) Are given chemicals in their food to give them colour. 4) Are fed pellets, some of which can include chicken faeces, corn meal, genetically modified canola oil, soy and other fish containing harmful toxins. 5) Have much less omega 3s due to lack of wild diet. 6) Salmon are raised in small cages to increase growth, but resulting in increased diseases. 7) Are given antibiotics at higher levels than other livestock. 8) Do massive damage to esturine eco systems and consequently to the wild salmon stocks.

Tales of a Yokel
Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen
BUDLEIGH LIVING by FCR Esgen Scientifically, it has something to do with the town being in a rain shadow area, but I bow to the common consensus that the sun does actually revolve around Budleigh and that all those who believe otherwise are sadly misguided.
Budleigh Salterton has it`s own weather you know , I was told when I moved to this delectable part of the world some forty years ago. Of course I laughed at this piece of nonsense when I first came ,but time has brought wisdom and after a couple of seasons the undeniable fact started to creep up on me like an online tax deadline, that the weather is indeed different here.
It s not that we feel superior here in Budleigh Salterton, you understand, it s just an acknowledgement that, as my mother used to say, some people are just born
BILL THE COWMAN by FCR Esgen Anybody who had ever witnessed old bill at 4.30 in the morning, in his back garden singing old Devonian folk songs while doing what can only be described as a Romany jig, will appreciate that it was an activity that didn t endear him to his neighbours. Bill was still keeping the old
country traditions alive in his eighties when his contemporaries were all away in the land of nod, basking under their electric blankets. Early mornings were old stuff to bill as he spent most of his life milking cows and taking care of stock, on his

more equal than others dear. Take the subject of holidays for instance. Now, jetting off for a break is fine in it s own way, and probably essential if you live next to spaghetti junction, but with two miles of south facing beach in Budleigh to relax on and swaying palms in the background, is there really any point in being stuck for six hours at Heathrow with the kids tearing up the departure lounge, waiting for the next flight to malaga!
fathers farm near Colyton. Dancing and singing to the sound of the fiddlers bow at festivals and gatherings had long been pastimes practiced by the agricultural community of the 1920 s and 30 s when bill was a youngster. He told me once that back then, before the war, all the young men and women were reared on rabbits and cider, both being plentiful at that time. Retirement never suited old bill and he soon became a jobbing gardener, taking on any task his ageing frame could manage. I still see him sometimes if I pass the Squires house, cutting pea sticks or turning a compost heap, and if he sees me he always turns, smiles, and gives me a little jig. © 2013

accuracy was shown in catching a ball thrown high in the air when she would track it’s fall and catch it clean every time. We always called her Dodger.
The Old Vet’nary by Ken Watson
Humour Do you think animals have a sense of humour? I do, so long as you liken it to the impish behaviour of children... They certainly express joy. You only have to watch cows or sheep let into a new field to see that, when even mature matrons will give a display of legs and udders flying in all directions. I had a Border Terrier whose whole life centred around playing ball. This phenomenon can be seen in sniffer dogs who give their valuable services just to be rewarded with a few minutes play with their ball. My Border would devise ball games for herself. She would drop her ball at the top of a flight of steps and then chase it as it rolled down. Then she caught it and took it to the top of the steps again and again. But her favourite was to come beside me as I knelt weeding and drop the ball just midway between us and then sit there nonchalantly looking around as if she was totally unaware, but if I even so much as twitched a muscle to grab the ball, she was on it in a
flash. Then she would rush around in circles of joy at having outwitted me. Even so, sometimes I would beat her to it, and then she would crouch in shivering concentration for the throw and chase which followed. My favourite dog of all time was a Harlequin Great Dane called Chloe. For the first 18 months of her life she was brought up on a Naval Estate in Plymouth until the Navy decreed she was not suitable for a small flat. She was due to be put down and I was called in, but instead I decided to take her into my own family, a decision which I never regretted. We hit it off straight away and my children loved her. I would take her with me when I lectured at schools and she would wander round the class shaking hands with everyone. Now she certainly had a sense of humour. Her party trick was to stand up with her feet on your shoulders and pretend to bite your nose with a great snap of her jaw, but she was so accurate that she would miss by less than an inch. This unerring

I knew a Siamese cat who devised a game for herself. She needed a small ball of silver paper which she would drop at the feet of any human who looked likely. She would then retreat two or three feet and you had to throw the ball so that it reached her at a height of about 3 inches, when she would bat it with her front paw into the far corner of the room. Then she would retrieve it in her mouth and drop it at your feet again. But woe betide you if your throwing did not come up to her rigorous standards. She would give a look of contempt and drop it at the foot of someone else. I know another Siamese who lived in a house which had a grand staircase with wide bannisters. Her party trick was to climb this by gripping round to the underside with a front paw to give her traction. But she would only perform if she had an audience. So she sat on the bottom newel post and set up a caterwaul as only a Siamese can until she had gathered a group of admirers, then, to cries of encouragement she would set off up the slippery slope to the top, whence she jumped down and strolled down the stairs to receive her applause.

But what about parrots when it comes to humour. I witnessed the following whilst waiting for my client to appear. Before me were French windows with curtains either side. A black cat sat looking out of the window at ground level and his tail draped over the edge of the step. To the right a parrot sat upon his perch. He looked at the tail and then at me and he stealthily climbed down the curtain and gave the tail a hearty bite. The cat cried out in pain and the parrot hastily clambered back up to the safety of his perch, and once there he laughed. Well it was a good imitation of a laugh. Is that a sense of humour or is it not? - K.Watson

Horse Care Behaviour by Natalie Bucklar
Natalie Bucklar gives valuable advice on various aspects of horse care and welfare...

Natural Behaviour As I sat down to write this I was disturbed by my dogs, a rumpus was kicking off in the garden. Thinking they were just being taunted by next doors cat, I called them but to no avail, not even for a biscuit. The Jack Russell’s voice got more frantic and there was a great deal of scrabbling behind the greenhouse. Then I realised the problem- they were hedgehog hunting. And absolutely nothing was going to stop them, that is until the said hedgehog became their supper. I found myself getting quite cross with them, I should have been writing but there I was in the pitch black, climbing round the back of the shed in my slippers with a fishing net to try and rescue a hedgehog. Meanwhile the dogs completely ignored me and made sure that all the neighbours knew about it; to them, the thrill of catching the hedgehog was far more important than any bribe, threat or swear word that I could offer. This made me think how this quite often happens with horses too. They
often give in to their natural instincts; the lure of their in-built behaviour is at times stronger than responding to what we have asked. Do we have a right to get cross with the horse (or dog!) if we haven’t trained it to ignore their natural behaviour? Or we haven’t communicated with them in a way they understand to show them that their behaviour is inappropriate at that time? I say my dogs all have ʻselective hearing’, when actually the reality is they aren’t trained enough to do as I ask when the lure of a tasty hedgehog appears under their nose. I therefore don’t really have a right to get cross with them if they haven’t learnt that ʻLeave the poor bleep hedgehog alone you bleeps’ means they have to come inside at once; they can’t help doing what they are genetically programmed to do. Common ʻproblems’ with horses, or unwanted behaviours to give them another name, are things such as stopping to eat when being led or ridden, refusing to move, napping towards a gateway or another horse, spooking, not wanting to be caught and walking off when they should be standing. All these behaviours are driven by natural instinct: the need for food, security, safety and movement. If we don’t like them then it is our job to train the horse, show them a different way and do this by communicating with them in a way they can understand that they will not starve, they won’t be eaten and they will see their friends again soon. Good management will support this training so as much as possible the horse can display natural behaviour for a large part of the day (socialising, eating, moving).

Eventually the Spaniel gave up in return for a biscuit and the terriers had to be dragged in by their collars, plastered in mud. I have finally now written this article, even if you dear reader now have a mental image of me as a mad woman with a fishing net. The hedgehog I hear you ask? Mission accomplished - he survived. But it would have been a whole lot easier if I had trained my dogs properly. Happy riding. Natalie

Business Advice
Employee Engagement...
}
Whilst it may not lead to marriage, your relationship with your staff is key to business success. So, what do you need to put in place in order to galvanise your workers to operate at the top of their game, all day, every day? •
Written by Katina Styles, a director at Axminster Tool Centre Ltd
Running your own business is all consuming; after all, the buck stops with you and, by default, the responsibility for growth and success is all down to you. In terms of financial and emotional investment this is probably true, but, aside from the stress involved, it’s a very lonely road. Just think how much easier it would be if you shared the journey with a happy, loyal and committed workforce? Time, to invite your staff to join the party and fully embrace employee engagement! Perhaps, just to reinforce the importance of your people being onside, we should take a look at what generally happens when the workforce is disengaged. It tends to boil down to negativity and negativity breeds negativity, spreading beyond the individual to the team, customer and supplier. Low morale and poor levels of motivation coupled with decreased productivity and increased absenteeism eventually filters down to the bottom line affecting the Company’s profits. On a more personal level, an employee’s unhappiness will ultimately impact not only on their work life but also their home and family life. Conversely, happy people equates to high levels of motivation, innovation, creativity and a positive working environment. Workers flourish, feel valued and are prepared to ʻgo the extra mile’ for the benefit of themselves, their colleagues and the Company. The outcome is better business results and a stable workforce, all committed to achieving 78 the goals of the organisation.

Leadership - delivering great leadership and being a role model is imperative if you want your employees to emulate you. You must be available at all times, be honest and consistent ensuring that your employees feel valued. Encourage two way communication and feedback (regular briefing meetings are useful); allow staff to challenge you and listen to their opinions (implement a suggestion scheme). It is not just your party and often they are the ones at the coalface and in touch with the realities of the business. Above all, give praise; for many it’s purely the recognition that they have done well that motivates them. Empower your workforce; give them responsibility and allow them to make their own decisions. Most people are more than capable of stepping up to mark and the ability to delegate to those hungry to show their worth will set you free from the day to day operations. Ensure that every role counts and is aligned with the Company’s vision, values and objectives. Everyone should know where they fit in and how their responsibilities and performance relate to the strategy.
Suppor t personal and career ambitions - what are their own goals? What training do they require to achieve these? Investment in development creates self worth and a desire to do well for the benefit of all. Provide and promote a safe and healthy environment; not only do you have a duty of care here but good working conditions and practices create a stress free workplace and enable employees to concentrate on their work.
and any other legal requirements this is your opportunity to create some huge win wins for both sides. Here, at Axminster Tools & Machinery we range from Free Fruit Friday to the granting of two Duvet Days per year which can be taken with no notice and no explanation (for those rare occasions when you wake up in the morning and don’t feel like engaging!) T h e thin g ab o u t e mp l oye e engagement is that it is a long term
relationship builder; it has to be sustained constantly - quick fixes of extravagant gestures will not keep the ʻmarriage’ alive and employees will soon see through any attempts to cover over the cracks. In challenging times an engaged workforce are your biggest ally and asset; foster their talent and desire to do well and you will find yourself celebrating many happy years - a great alternative to the divorce court!

Dirty Work at Devon’s Crossroads If you’re planning to haunt any of the scenes of Devon’s ghastly goings-on of yesteryear during these shorter autumn days, look out behind you, cautions John Fisher
THE LAST WOMEN to be hanged for witchcraft in Britain were from Devon. Three of them died at Heavitree, on the outskirts of Exeter, by having ropes with slip-knots tied around their necks. Then they were lifted bodily off the ground. It was how they did things in those days and at that place. It was August, 1682 and thousands of people walked out from the city on the Honiton road, following behind the hapless trio and up the hill to where the road still forks to watch the spectacle and listen to any final words from the women before cheering wildly as they left the ground to kick their legs in the ‘gallows dance’. The three unfortunates were Temperance Lloyd, Mary Trembles, and Susanna Edwards, three poor, terrified women who were brought down from Bideford to Exeter to one of the two ‘official’ places where Devon’s death penalties were carried out. One of them, Temperance Lloyd and the only one to have made any kind of ‘confession’, was probably mentally deranged. The two others screamed their innocence until the end. At Tyburn, in London where the vast crowds demanded a better view of events, those convicted met their ends by being pushed from the tailboard of a cart (the same cart that had brought them from prison, seated on their coffins) their nooses already tied to the crossbeam of the gallows.

At this point friends or family might rush forward and hang onto the legs of their loved-ones to cut short their agony. Not so in Devon. At Heavitree, a place like many others in England that takes its name from the terrible tree that once served as a gallows there, death was a much more drawn out affair. What mattered on these occasions was that justice was seen to be done by those who administered the laws of the day and witchcraft was only one of the crimes which called for the death penalty. Others included murder, treason, highway robbery, sheep stealing, cattle rustling, forgery, arson, house-breaking, thievery, assault and rape.
A man’s world There was one exception to hanging for murder. Women who murdered their husbands were

never hanged. Instead they were put to death by being burnt alive. Their crime was known as ‘petty treason’ and defined under the Treason Act of 1351. It was seen as ‘an assault on the majesty of the State’ as well as the actual victim and therefore ‘against the natural order of things’. The Act was repealed in 1825 but the last woman to be burnt alive in Exeter was Rebecca Downing, a servant girl who died on 29th June, 1782 for poisoning her mistress.
For reasons best known to themselves, the authorities in Devon decreed that these public burnings should happen not at Heavitree but at Southernhay, just outside the city walls, on a piece of scrub land used periodically for an annual fair. Perhaps it was so that the administering clergy did not have so far to walk from the Cathedral in inclement weather?
Coast & Country
Protestant martyr It was there on 15 November 1557, that Agnes Prest was chained to a post and burnt alive, not for murder but for denying the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation. As with all burnings, the ashes were scattered about the place afterwards so that comes Judgement Day there will be no bones to rise from the grave with the chance of a life to come. On the same spot in 1571 one Agnes Jones was burnt to death, for poisoning her husband. There were doubtless many other burnings here for this spot, on the west side of Southernhay, nowadays a select, tree-lined commercial area, is marked on a 1709 map as “The Burning Place”. But Devon’s crossroads were always the preferred places to hang people, especially highwaymen and footpads, because bodies would be left swinging, in a gibbet, for as long as the magistrate decided. This not only acted as a deterrent to other miscreants, it also served to reassure travellers that they were in a law-abiding part of the realm.
Bodies in gibbets - body-hugging iron cages - could stay there as long as 20 years and were designed in such a way that the corpse remained visible, held together for as long as possible after decay set in. Sometimes criminals were put in these gibbets alive and simply left to die.
enlightenment the lawmakers, having abolished the practice of hanging drawing and quartering, needed a tougher law to deter murderers and the proliferation of gibbeting was the perceived answer.
Catholic martyr Most famous ‘criminal and traitor’ to be thus despatched was Robert Welsh, the Catholic vicar of St Thomas’s in Exeter who was placed in a gibbet alive (by the then Protestant council of Exeter), before being hauled to the top of his own church tower in Cowick Street for “preaching against the new religion” (Protestantism) during the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549. A contemporary account records how:[He was] hung in chains, having on his priest's vestments, with a holy bucket, a sprinkling brush, a small bell, a pair of beads, and other Romish articles hung about him; where he remained for a long time. He made little or no confession, but took his death very patiently; and had certainly proved a very useful member of the commonwealth, had not his follies and vices over-balanced his virtues. It took him four days and nights to die but his body was left on the gibbet until 1553 when Catholicism was restored during the reign of Queen Mary 1, aka Bloody Mary for her burning and beheading of hundreds of Protestants, men women and children. Little wonder that hundreds of years later so many of these places of execution still have disturbing tales attached to them.
Bring on the gibbets These intersections, it was thought, also served to confuse the spirits of those who had committed dark deeds. Rather than move on to judgement they lurked (and perhaps continue to lurk, some say) in this noman’s land, beyond the limits of a town and between human habitations. It is why suicides were also buried at crossroads. Problem was that following the Murder Act of 1751 many Devon crossroads became little more than bone yards as corpses rotted in the gibbets that were now commonplace. For in their
a Devon suicide at what were then crossroads is that of Kitty Jay and dates from the late 1700s. The discovery of the grave is first documented in the North Devon Journal, 23 January1851; In the parish of Manaton, near Widdecombe on the moor while some men in the employ of James Bryant, Esq., of Prospect, at his seat, Hedge Barton, were removing some accumulations of way soil, a few days since, they discovered what appeared to be a grave. On further investigation, they found the skeleton of a body, which proved from enquiry to be the remains of Ann Jay, a woman who hanged herself some three generations since in a barn at a place called Forder, and was buried at Four Cross Lane, according to the custom of that enlightened age.
The Bloody Assizes Parliament’s new law ‘for better preventing the horrid crime of murder’ stated that ‘in no case whatsoever shall the body of a murderer be suffered to be buried.’ The Act mandated either public dissection or the ‘hanging in chains’ (so-called gibbeting) of the cadaver. Sometimes both. On occasion these gibbets were erected not at a crossroad but close to the scene of the crime itself – Samuel Pepys commenting in his diary expressed disgust at the practice where the sight and smell of decaying corpses was offensive and "pestilential" and so a threat to public health.
From Torquay’s Gallows Gate to Gibbet Hill near Brentor or Hangman’s Stone in East Devon, the county abounds with places where the name is a giveaway to the ghoulish goings-on that once went on there. Many more are not obvious at all but are still probably ‘spooked’ – thanks to the man given the job of punishing the rebels following the Monmouth Rebellion in the West in 1685, the monster, Judge Jeffreys.
treason. Those parts stayed there for years, nobody daring to take them down.
Look out behind you! So there you have it. Not only does Devon have more miles of road than any other county in England, it also has more tales of headless horses, headless horsemen and headless coachmen roaming in the gloaming than you might care to shake a chain at. But before you start checking and re-checking your rear-view mirror as the nights draw in, it may be a comfort to ponder the suggestion that many of these apparitions may not be what they seem. There is good reason to believe that many of them were dreamt up by 18th century smugglers to spread fear and alarm amongst the good people of the county. There was (and still is come to that) nothing better than the thought of a close encounter with a headless horror to keep a body’s head firmly under the duvet when ‘the gentlemen’ and their five and twenty ponies go trotting through the dark.
Gallows humour
Finally a reminder that even at an execution there can always be a touch of humour, should the condemned feel that way inclined. Take for example the Victorian murderer William Palmer who is reported to have looked at the trapdoor on the gallows and asked the hangman, A contemporary visitor to "Are you sure it's safe?"
