Editor’s Letter Dear reader, welcome to our summer issue which covers July, Aug and Sept. On my travels around East Devon recently, I’ve been particularly impressed by the blooms appearing on many of our garden plants this year. Clematis, wistaria, roses, they all seemed to have flowered in profusion. Experts say it’s the result of the horrible cold winter we had earlier, whatever the reason for the prolific flowering, it goes to prove there’s always a silver lining.

some hate it, whatever your persuasion, it brings a welcome boost to our quiet seaside town and livens things up for us quite nicely, long may it continue so. By the way, don’t miss our tide timetables, particularly if you want to get onto the sand or rockpools, they are on pages 34 and 35. The Diary Commended Scheme Just to remind readers, we’ve recently introduced a Commended Scheme, intended to promote the services of reputable businesses in the valley.

A few weeks ago, I happened to be standing at the verdant Connaught Gardens, looking out across the bay. A cornflower blue sky above, the cliff side land swathed in green, the sea flat calm and out, leaving the sands and rockpools bathed in a sunlight. I was struck by how lucky we all are to live in Sidmouth, particularly at this time of the year. Make sure you make the time to get out and enjoy it, it’s free!

The Commended logo C shows that a business has received letters of commendation from customers. We also indicate a year of establishement, which helps to give more background information. If you as a reader, have used a business that has provided a particularly excellent service, please phone or write to let us know, as we keen to promote this type of business.

Not long now to the Sidmouth Folk Festival, I know many love it and

LOCAL HISTORY cut cost 4d in old money. There were 3 chimney sweeps, Sid Quick, Fred Stuart and Harry Harris. In the 30s you’d go into Exeter to the fifty shilling tailors and be measured for a suit of clothes. I used to cycle to Exeter, put down five pounds two shillings and six pennies; two shillings tip for the man that measured you. This would come by parcel post with a note saying if anything was not right to return it and they would pay the postage.

Bygone Memories By Frank Farr

The 20s to 40s Jack Patch the wheelright had his own forge where he could make small parts for carts and 4 wheel wagons. He had taps & dies to cut the thread. Jack would work from 7am to 7pm and in the winter he would use oil lamps, his wheelright shop still stands today. Most farms had farm fires that they could put on logs which were 4 to 5 foot long. In the morning they would rustle up the embers and put on a bundle of faggot wood and in no time there would be a good fire again. Many fireplaces were 10-12ft long wide and seats at each end were called “chimneys corner”. As the old saying went, “chimneys corner, the best bet tonight and on a rough night”.

Most wells in East Devon were dug by Gunner Wokeley from Ottery St. Mary - he must have dug a 100. He could also divine water with hazel sticks. He could tell you how much water was down a well. In January, the bellringers and choir were given a supper in the Old Village Hall in Jackson’s Lane (now Middletown Lane). Mr Pidg-

eon cooked the meal in his bake house oven and Brian Pidgeon would bring it down in his van. The Rev Gardner presided over the meal and a good time was had by all. You could buy a new 3 bedroomed house for £450 - £500 with a large garden. Down at Frogmore the late Wilf Pearce lived; he helped Wallace Barnes to develop the bouncing bomb used in the famous Dam Busters. Many Lancasters were shot down and gave their lives for this mission. In the words of the late Sir Winston Churchill “we are but a nation of short memories”. I knew Sir Winston Churchill when he attended the pheasant shoots at Bicton. He was a very jovial gent. He always put down two of the old £5 notes for keepers and beaters. He also shook hands with me while serving in the 2nd parachute regiment. The last time he shot at Bicton was in January 1939 he never came back again. War was just round the corner Frank Farr

The Late Rt Honourable Lord Clinton had his own gang of people who would maintain the river, Alfie Howe being the foreman. They kept the river Otter and brooks clean from the bridge at Newton Poppleford, Hawkerland, Yettington, Otterton, East Budleigh down to the river estuary. There were 3 gent’s barbers in East Budleigh, Sid Quick, Walley Palmer and Fred Stuart - a hair

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life

Followed by

heavy rain By Cec Hardy

Every May my exiled friend would pack his tent for two week’s camping in his homeland north of the border. “It’s fantastic” he assured me, “sunshine, long daylight hours, you can read your paper at midnight without a torch”. I made a mental note to visit this idyllic land someday. It was wife Christine’s determination to commune with her ancestors, the clan MacDonald, which finally got me to Scotland. Five days in the Highlands should be enough. It was. Two days before departure I consulted the area’s weather forecast. In order it read: heavy rain/heavy rain shower/ heavy rain/ heavy rain. Not promising, but at least we’d only be there for the first two days of heavy rain. Had to improve for the last three, didn’t it? Next day I sneaked another look and discovered a third consecutive day of heavy rain predicted, though - joy of joys - the temperature would rise to a balmy 10°C. We considered staying at home, Sidmouth’s forecast looking much more agreeable, but it was too late to cancel so I consoled myself with the thought that the forecast might be wrong. It wasn’t. Our fourth day dawned, which it hadn’t done before. The landlady of the B&B (you didn’t think we’d be daft enough to camp, did you?) claimed not to have heard

JULY to SEPT 09

the day’s forecast so we took our rain jackets just in case and merrily trotted uphill towards a village where one of said ancestors was allegedly buried. After a long climb we met a hiker coming the other way. “Rain’s forecast by 10 o’clock” he informed us almost gleefully. The first drop fell as my watch struck the hour and many more followed, becoming torrential later. Our final day was enlivened by occasional horizontal hail and next morning I was thrilled to be finally driving home through fresh snow covered mountains, though not so thrilled to hear that wife Christine had scheduled one last ancestor hunt involving a detour through some sodden South Yorkshire ex-mining villages. Why not go abroad? We’ve tried that. A long weekend visit to Italian wine producing friends in sunkissed Tuscany was particularly memorable. Leaving a Gatwick Airport basking in Friday morning sunshine, we returned on Monday afternoon with a bag awash with damp clothes and the feeling we’d never be invited back after the destruction our attendant thunderstorms had wrought on our hosts’ precious grape harvest. And then there was the cultural weekend in Madrid. It wasn’t meant to be, but friends were mightily impressed we’d spent an entire day in the famous Prado Museum. Not studying masterpieces of European art, I’m afraid, but the depressingly damp landscape from their café window.

We seem to have a natural, though unwelcome, talent as rainmakers, useful for breaking droughts but highly inconvenient as far as holidays go. We’ve considered planning a trip then unexpectedly changing our minds and going a week early since wherever you go it has always been lovely the week before. But that’s not very practicable. A better bet might be to plan a holiday abroad then stay at home with the curtains drawn. As a service to readers I would love to divulge our holiday plans for next year but all things considered it would be most unfair to our intended destination. Cec Hardy PS I couldn’t read the paper at midday without a torch, let alone midnight. Wife Christine reckons it’s an age thing. Glasses? Me? Nonsense!

Years ago we tried even further afield. The flash flood which hit the unsuspecting town of Franz Josef in New Zealand’s South Island may have been entirely coincidental but I’ve always felt

SIDMOUTH DIARY

The

somehow responsible. Two days after our arrival it was cut off from the outside world, the road bridge to the south washed away and the road north blocked by a landslide. Almost two foot of rain fell in 48 hours, a once in twenty year event even in this part of the world. This is a region that expects sixteen feet of rainfall per year and is rarely disappointed but to experience 12% of the annual deluge during three days could be considered unfortunate, especially a week before midsummer.

MANAGING your MONEY

by Helen Mulvaney BA (Hons), Dip M, Cert PFS

Your retirement matters In this quarter’s edition I thought I might answer some of the most frequently asked questions on retirement options and planning. Question:

My pension fund has been badly hit by the stockmarket crash - I’m worried that this could happen just before I retire. What can I do to help prevent this ?

Answer: I’m sorry to say that this isn’t an unusual occurrence and happens because pension funds aren’t regularly reviewed. If you have an adviser you should look to have an annual review and part of the review is looking at your planned retirement date and making sure you have a strategy in place so that your fund won’t be badly affected if there’s another stockmarket crash around this time. If your adviser is inviting you to an annual review please make sure you take up this offer as you may miss out on valuable advice. Within 5 years of your selected retirement date you should be starting to reduce your more volatile holdings and be moving to more secure funds. This is hugely important because you might get caught out and have to defer your re-

JULY to SEPT 09

tirement if your pension fund is badly affected.

Question: I am about to retire and I’m worried that the government’s quantitative easing may provoke inflation in the future. Is there anything I can do to protect my income from this risk ?

Answer: This is becoming a

more significant threat. Over the last few years inflation has been perceived to be low (although research would appear to contradict that this is the case for pensioners). Presently, economic efforts are aimed at attacking deflation but the measures that we are using might eventually lead to higher inflation. I think the fact is that no one really knows how things are going to work through the economy and even the economist appear to be split in their opinions about how quantitative easing may eventually affect the economy in the longer term. If inflation does become significant, then pensioners normally suffer because they often have fixed incomes and inflation will erode the buying power of your pension. Tackling this situation isn’t easy, however there are several options that you should consider.

The Bank of England

Firstly, an increasing annuity must be considered - this could be via a conventional escalation annuity (however this isn’t always very cost effective) or you should consider an investment annuity. Investment annuities link your income to a range of managed assets including equities, property, fixed interest and other investments. These types of assets, especially equities and property tend to protect against inflation. Investment annuities are complex products and therefore you should seek professional advice. More questions next time - if you need help with retirement options or planning please contact me on: 01395 512166 or e-mail helen@richmond-ifa.com

SIDMOUTH DIARY walk Circular Branscombe route

18

If you haven’t already been on this walk around Branscombe, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The walk takes you past Branscombe Forge, The Old Bakery, all owned by the National Trust. Further along, you pass the ancient St. Winifred’s church. Taking the path running behind the church, you cut up the hillside, meeting the ridge path that takes you down to Branscombe Mouth. Finally, the return walk is a gentle

Branscombe Forge

stroll along the valley floor past the fully working Manor Farm Mill (NT) and back along the mill stream to The Old Bakery. The only strenuous bit is at point 2 & 3 where you take the path from St. Winifred’s church up the hillside. With regard to food, drink, toilets, etc, you are well catered for at both The Old Bakery and at The Sea Shanty and if you prefer something stronger, the Mason’s Arms can by reached further down the valley (see marker M below).

FOOD & DRINK

The Old Bakery provides a basic but excellent range of food and drink.

Saint Winifred’s church Branscombe

Dating from Saxon times, St. Winifred’s church is one of only two churches that can claim evidence of Saxon remains, the other being Saint Giles in Sidbury. There are about forty stones that are incorporated into the base of the tower which have been identified as Saxon. It has been suggested that there was an even earlier church on this site and experts say that the herring-bone chiselling which is characteristic of Saxon stonework would support this hypothesis.

The location was carefully chosen to be invisible from the sea, and if, as suggested, there was an earlier church, this would have helped to prevent Viking raiders from plundering.

The Old Bakery (nt)

Once you’ve parked your car, you can take a look at Branscombe Forge and The Old Bakery. These are both owned by the National Trust, the forge is open and metalwork items such as candelabra, fireside items, garden planters are available for sale at the shop. The forge is believed to have been built in 1580. The Old Bakery is in a lovely setting, with the mill stream gently flowing alongside and through the orchard. You can follow the path down to Manor Farm Mill although if you intend to take the full circular walk, then it’s better to visit the mill on the way back from Branscombe Mouth.

Woodland walk along the ridge

Coming up from the church takes you up to the ridge path. Veer left and follow this path that runs parallel to the cliffs. If you have dogs or small children, be aware of the cliffs that appear as the wood ends and the sea comes into view. Along the way, gaps in the trees allow fine views down and across the valley. HEALTH and CARE NICOLA GILLESPIE BSC (HONS) MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE (MLD) THERAPIST SIDMOUTH & BUDLEIGH SALTERTON

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) recently listed in the London Paper (April 2008) as “bad name, nice treatment” and described as a treatment “….this effective really ought to have a prettier name”.

What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)? The Independent in November 2008 explained Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) “…stimulates the lymphatic system, the thing that’s responsible for transporting nutrients around the body and eliminating waste and excess fluid. Using light, rhythmical strokes, therapists clear areas of congestion to reduce puffiness and boost the immune system. …. MLD is a favourite among French women, who swear by its cellulite-busting effect”. MLD is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialized, light, gentle rhythmical pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow.

The History In the early 1930’s, Dr. Emil Vodder created a unique set of movements which he successfully used to clear chronic catarrh and facial acne. He termed this technique manual lymph drainage. He went on to devise treatments for the whole body. Since his pioneering work modern research has looked at the effects of this technique on the lymphatic and nervous systems. As a result, MLD has spread worldwide and is a popular treatment in many European hospitals.

What are the benefits? MLD is both preventative and remedial and can enhance your well being. It is a deeply relaxing treatment which improves skin tone and is particularly relevant for chronic conditions including, but not limited to, the following: sinus disorders – acne – puffy ankles in pregnancy – fluid retention – tired, puffy eyes – reducing cellulite – minimising / reducing stretch marks – promoting healing of wounds, burns and scars A well functioning lymphatic system contributes to healthy body tissue and plays an important part in the body’s immune responses.

Lymphoedema Management MLD in combination with Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a recognised treatment to aid in the management and control of both primary and secondary lymphoedema. To ensure high standards are maintained, therapists are required to update their skills biannually and are registered with MLDUK (www.mlduk.org.uk). Nicola Gillespie BSc (Hons) is a Vodder qualified Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Complex Decongestive Therapist (CDT) practicing in Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth at prices that are fair and affordable to all age groups. To request further information about MLD and its benefits, lymphoedema and CDT or to book an appointment, call: 01395 444305 www.nicolagillespie.co.uk

FCR Esgen ponders Devon’s own space-time continuum

Tales of a Yokel By FCR Esgen

Swampy Most of us have seen the newspaper cuttings of Swampy, the man with the bedraggled ringlets who almost single-handedly held up the Ministry of Transport’s plans for a new road in Devon sometime ago. Well, I have met his twin brother, if that’s possible. It all started when I was forced into court on some whim of a business conglomerate trying to part me from money I didn’t have, still don’t have and probably never will have, but I’m being charged interest anyway! On walking into the court house half an hour late, having missed the bus, I was confronted by this Swampy and his confederates, pie-eyed on super strength cider; it was half past ten in the morning ! As I sat in what passed as the reception area, I marvelled at the contrast between the aforementioned increasingly happy band and the legal briefs defending them in their dark flowing apparel. While Swampy’s children tore round the room asking everybody for money to buy sweets, their father tramped into the courtroom to receive his sentence at the hands of the Establishment; his band followed to learn their fate. As I sipped my polystyrene cup of well-sugared tea, I glanced

JULY to SEPT 09

at the clock and saw that it was over an hour past the time of my court appearance. Cornering one of the legal beagles, I was told I had already been “found against” in my absence and ordered to pay £3663.51 in costs. I could scrape the 51p I thought and as I pondered on the rest, my musings were interrupted as a triumphant Swampy and friends burst through the double doors of the courtroom to be greeted by their respective girlfriends. Why the elation ? I thought, as they were sure to be detained at Her Majesty’s pleasure for a few days at least. Swampy turned to explain, “You see Mister, the judge said as it’s Christmas he’ll bang us up on Boxing Day!”.

Blackberrying By FCR Esgen

When I was a boy in the sixties life was quite different from what it is today in this century. Our summer holidays were always spent outside, unless it was raining heavily, in which case we would go to the nearest friend’s house and watch one of the small black and white television sets that had children’s programmes in the mornings. Maybe Laurel and Hardy or perhaps Flash Gordon was on. If the sun was out and it was late summer, my pals and I often went picking blackberries - “blackberry-

SIDMOUTH DIARY

The

ing” as it was then called. The back gate at the end of my parents’ large garden opened out into the vast green world of the Sussex Downs. There we were free to ramble amount the brambles unchecked, at least until the thorns caught in our jumpers. After eating our way through a few bushes we would start to

put blackberrries in the various containers we had brought along with us; saucepans, plant pots, anything that was to hand was pressed into service as we strayed for miles along heath and heather for bigger and tastier specimens. At length, the gang of us would trudge our ruby-lipped way home to our mothers, who were ready to make use of our wild crop and turn it into such wonderful delights as stewed blackberry and apple or blackberry and raisin pie with thick custard on top. Request - are there any talented artist/illustrators out there? If so, please call 512166.

Jon Ingles writes about the Turbitt thatching family

A family of thatchers greater charm, particularly when rendered and limewashed. Cob and thatch buildings are very green due to excellent thermal efficiency and biodegradability. An important consideration with the current environmental issues.

1

Thatching is one of the most ancient crafts still being carried on today, stretching back to a time when only locally sourced materials were available and when most rural hamlets were truly self-sufficient. Thatched buildings have a natural empathy with their surroundings, helping them blend seamlessly into the East Devon countryside. Irregular cob walls add even

To gain more of an insight into this ancient rural craft, I visited Frank Turbitt in Otterton, whose family have been thatchers since the time of George II. Over the generations, the Turbitt family have thatched all manner of Devonshire property from Raleigh’s Hayes Barton, to many of the farms and cottages that grace the Devonshire countryside. Frank is retired now but the business has been taken over by Philip White, who was trained by Frank and worked for him for 20 years. Frank’s son, although interested in thatching, preferred electronics. Frank’s brother, David, also a retired thatcher, has his son Mark continuing on with the family thatching business. Frank’s grandfather was a thatcher on General Buller estate in Crediton and married a thatcher’s daughter from Sandford. In the late 1900’s he came to the Sidbury Manor Estate to carry on his trade. It was particularly interesting whilst browsing through Frank’s collection of old photos and family documents, coming across an article from Country Life magazine written in 1943. Frank’s

father, Jack, had been featured in this article which was soberly headed “Will Thatching Be Revived?”. Jack said that he was getting numerous requests to thatch properties that had previously been tiled. Country Life also

questioned whether new homes built using these traditional methods to satisfy the rustic cravings of homeowners would be “wholly unsuitable”. It appears that the mass use of thatch in modern homes hasn’t happened to any

great extent, although when you do spot them, the eye can be jarred as precise, square cornered buildings are out of kilter with the naturalistic curves of a thatched roof. Many buildings are now thatched with water reed although traditionally, rye wheat straw (a by-product from growing wheat grain) was used which Frank tells me gives a finer finish. However, wheat straw is no longer suitable in many cases as varieties grown for a large wheat ear, give a short straw. Nowadays Frank says that

they do go to the effort of growing their own rye wheat in order to get a supply, which is particularly important where listed buildings consent requires wheat thatch. However, the last couple of seasons have been particularly poor due to conditions at harvest. Where water reed is used, much of it is sourced from Austria / Turkey / Poland / Ukraine. The Lincolnshire Fens, once providing an abundant supply, now produce only sufficient for local roofing, supply being exacerbated by nitrate leaching and RSPB protec-

tion of habitat. Quality of workmanship is very important to the longevity of a thatched roof. Apparently, there is much scope for either good or poor quality workmanship and it is the attention paid throughout the construction that will provide extra durability and lifespan. The process of thatching starts at the eaves, Straw wads are positioned on the wooden roofing and securely tied in with baler twine. the straw / reed ends being set backwards to create the sloping effect. Each wad is secured by spars (split hazel, twisted and bent to form a staple). Underneath the ridge area, a tightly bound layer of straw running horizontally is secured to timberwork and then the final ridge thatch is secured with linggers (see picture 1 p37) to make good.
