East Development of JINTANG, CHENDGU, CHINA David Campanella 5th Year Interpretive Urban Design Seminar

Fall 2012

Development Zones The new development of East Jintang is broken up into three distictive zones, which are organized around the existing river and university conditions. The zones consist of a variety of building types including single family residences, mixed use residential towers, low-rise commercial, and high-rise office towers. Municipal functions are arranged along a riverfront park.

The existance of public green spaces are critical elements of growing metropolitan population centers. Given the westward expansion and population growth of Jintang, a public green space would serve as an effective buffer between various activity and use zones in future development schemes. This plan assesses the merits of a public avenue and park space.

Jintang New Town

Masterplan Proposals

Yueqi Jazzy Li & Michael Kirschner 5th year Interpretive Urban Design Seminar

Fall 2012

Context photos of old town Jintang

Individual Project I Yueqi Jazzy Li This proposal focuses on the idea of giving back the waterfront to the public as green spaces and civic amenities. The two islands are also integrated and connected by newly built foot bridges to form a pedestrian friendly network of green space. The rest of the new town are laid out into 10 smaller districts. Rather than have a central business district, the commercial buildings are planned to spring up in the area in an organic fashion.

Individual Project I Michael Kirschner This proposal centered on creating accessible waterfront park space and real estate to encourage urban and economic expansion. A continuation of vehicular infrastructure was woven into a grid east of the river. Commercial and residential zones were incorporated into a layout allowing for effective transportation networks to be established and to give university students access to a large portion of the city. The industrial sector is positioned to the northeast, preventing river, noise and air pollution from affecting the general population. Park space and community sites along the river attempt to create an active public corridor and promote bicycle and pedestrian activity.

Revolving Urbanism

Michael Bosio 5th Year Interpretive Urban Design Seminar

Fall 2012

This project takes place in a developing city in China. The city has multiple elements which currently exsist that had to be taken into consideration when designing a master plan. Located to the East a small university sits near the edge of the footage hills. There is a stream which the client has asked to perserve. The river divides the city into the old and the new only linked by bridges.

This plan for East Jintang proposes blocks of between 700’ and 1000’, meditating between the large-scale development of western Jintang and the small-scale nature of the historic centre. A greenway runs along the river and, with planted boulevards, encircles the city, connecting the existing universities with the new civic institutions. The CBD is bounded by the river to the west and the universities to the east. To the south, lining an avenue which breaks the grid, is the government centre which, at the river, resolves into a cultural cente with library and museum. To the north of the CBD, separated by a large park at the top end of the greenbelt, is a reisdential section of the city at a smaller scale than the central city.

Overall View of the New City From the South

Tulane Regional Urban Design Center

The addition of the New City to Jintang focuses on freeing up green space along the river, as well as two other “branches” of green space that come off of it. Along the river, there is a bike / walking path, a large City Park, and the civic institutions. The city’s residential and light commercial districts are distributed throughout the city, with the Central Business District at the core of the city. Cutting through the CBD is a main boulevard with a large neutral ground that can be occuppied, and contains public sculpture.

Existing New

This proposal for Jintang attempts to create a “new” city while maintaining connections to the “old” city. A cultural district is created along the riverfront, with the most prominent institutions located directly across the river, between the existing infrastructure. Beyond the cultural district is a Central Business District with mixed-use buildings, and residential towers. North of the CBD there is a large urban park, which allows preservation of the land surrounding the river transecting Jintang. The northern end of the city is a residential district which connects to the ‘old’ city via a proposed bridge.
