Tran Nhan Tong Buddhist Institute 2019

Location | Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh Client | Vietnam National University Type | University - Cutural center Status | 1.500 Scale Master Planning

Site area | 100,000 sqm Building area | 25,145 sqm Gross floor area | 46,370 sqm Height | 1-3 storeys

On a flat grassy plain in a rural town somewhere on the edge of Northwest Vietnam, where nature finds itself a perfect harmony among mountains and lakes, a circle is drawn but not closed, it is broken at the end, then follows the edge of the lake to form the masterplan of Tran Nhan Tong (陳仁宗) Institute, that gave a satisfied answer to the tricky questions from Vietnam National University’s professors - a design embodying Tran Nhan Tong, Buddhism and Zen philosophies !

From the perspective of Buddhism, the circular masterplan could be seen as a variety of literary metaphors depending on viewers and their belief. It could mean a lotus associated with Budda in Chinese culture, or the Wheel of Life in Tibetan Buddhism, or simply an unclosed Zen circle from Japanese calligraphy. Through the eyes of architects, on the other hand, that circle convincingly solved the endless conflict between the respect for natural landscape and the desire of being distinctive in design as well as ingeniously provided a clear track for visitors to follow to discover all display spaces.

Other than the circular masterplan, the main threestorey lecture building bends around the lake, which forms a resting-hill roof pointing to the water where visitors might find the most spectacular scenes of the site.

Site area | 90,280 sqm Building area | 28,800 sqm Gross floor area | 66,070 sqm Height | 5-7 storeys

Ocean, wind and tuna, the generous presents from nature to Tuy Hoa, a little fishing town on Middle Vietnam shoreline. Located on a narrow strait here, the site undoubtedly takes all of the advantages with extraordinary panoramic views of the ocean. To fully exploit the natural treasure, a masterplan was proposed to distribute all the project sectors along the shore including shop houses (4), fishing docks (5), a hotel (7), seaside restaurants (8) and a massive fish market (13) – the complex’s landmark and the city’s as well.

For years, Tuna seems to become the most valuable sea product in Tuy Hoa, then the giant silvery fish on boats is the happiness for fishermen here after a couple of weeks living on the ocean. From that inspirational image, the grand fish market, coated with reflective stainless-steel panels, is given a wavy and shimmering roof that ingeniously blends the giant industrial shed into the ocean background, but also awakens the sense of fulfilment from fishermen when it is seen in the distance.
