On a flat grassy plain in a rural town somewhere on the edge of Northwest Vietnam, where nature finds itself a perfect harmony among mountains and lakes, a circle is drawn but not closed, it is broken at the end, then follows the edge of the lake to form the masterplan of Tran Nhan Tong (陳仁宗) Institute, that gave a satisfied answer to the tricky questions from Vietnam National University’s professors - a design embodying Tran Nhan Tong, Buddhism and Zen philosophies !
From the perspective of Buddhism, the circular masterplan could be seen as a variety of literary metaphors depending on viewers and their belief. It could mean a lotus associated with Budda in Chinese culture, or the Wheel of Life in Tibetan Buddhism, or simply an unclosed Zen circle from Japanese calligraphy. Through the eyes of architects, on the other hand, that circle convincingly solved the endless conflict between the respect for natural landscape and the desire of being distinctive in design as well as ingeniously provided a clear track for visitors to follow to discover all display spaces.
Other than the circular masterplan, the grand three-storey lecture building curves around the lake, which forms a resting-hill roof pointing to the water where visitors might find the most spectacular scenes of the site.

Ocean, wind and tuna, the generous presents from nature to Tuy Hoa, a little fishing town on Middle Vietnam shoreline. Located on a narrow strait here, the site undoubtedly takes a huge advantage with extraordinary panoramic views to the ocean. To fully exploit the natural treasure, a masterplan was proposed to distribute all the project sectors along the shore including shop houses (4), fishing docks (5), a hotel (7), seaside restaurants (8) and a massive fish market (13) – the complex’s landmark and the city’s as well.

For years, Tuna seems to become the most valuable sea product in Tuy Hoa, then the giant silvery fish on boats is the happiness for fishermen here after a couple of weeks living on the ocean. From that inspirational image, the grand fish market, coated with reflective stainless-steel panels, is given a wavy and shimmering roof that ingeniously blends the giant industrial shed into the ocean background, but also awakens the sense of fulfilment from fishermen when it is seen in the distance.

With a vision of growing up globally, Trung Nam Group, a major real estate developer in Da Nang asked for 101-story skyscraper design to celebrate their financial success as well as the city Da Nang, which can be described in one word “Iconic”. The approved design comes with all required attributes from cultural, localized and representing Da Nang people to “Iconic” appearance by embodying the nature of Mangrove, a popular local plant. The image of mangrove with their twisting roots to resist heavy river currents is inspired to shape up a concept of 3 towers twisted together into one skyscraper capped with a Mangrove flower-shaped crown.
Optimize floor plans for different functions
Connect with city transit network Extend and elevate landscape
3 towers to maximize GFA Join towers to centralize cores Twist the top to mitigate high wind Chamfer the top to create an iconic crown
Diagrid structure to minimize internal columns
Along with the approved design, there are some other options worth to explore. Gaining the inspiration from shimmering fog screen appearing on top of Hai Van pass, a nearby 500m-high pass with spectacular views towards Da Nang, the Sea Cloud (right) is coated by a reflective metallic mesh that catches and reflects sunshine in early morning or at sunset giving the tower a graceful dance in the sky.
On the other hand, the Marble Mountain (left) is designed to have the tower growing straight up from a massive glass dome, which celebrates the beauty of Da Nang nature like caves, hills and marble mountains.

Being abandoned for years, the site of three residential towers located in the center of District 5, HCMC, is famous for “being haunted”, Thuan Kieu Plaza. It is a challenging urban repair task aiming to generate a refreshing and holistic lifestyle for the local community. Inspired by Red Arowana, a symbol of luck in Asian culture, the design embodies its bright colour, fish-scale pattern and graceful movement in building’s architecture DNA including spacious wavy balcony and facade along with “Deep Ocean” theme requested by the client.

TheTheDispersedFocusedTheBridge 321
Located in Long Thanh ID Junction residential development, the 375m long site serves as sports facilities and neighborhood parks for its citizens. It is challenging to stuff all two large gyms with an Olympic size swimming pool, cafeteria, skate parks along with a long list of sport courts like tennis and basketball, however it still ends up with 3 options: the dispersed (1), the focused (2) and the bridge (3). The first one seems to be the most utilized for service management with two separate gyms located on both sides while leaving the center less dense, which allows not interrupting the central landscape axis of the overall development.
Placed at the end of the development’s landscape axis, the site must be designed to attract people to come, to practice and to socialize. Thus, the two gym blocks are wrapped by a wavy metal mesh from 2nd floor upward that creates a shimmering curtain under sunshine during daytime while turning to a floating screen lit up by tennis court lighting at night.

Located on the Southwest suburban area of Hanoi, Trung Van Intracom Residential and Commercial Complex aims to blow a new wind through the old and deteriorated apartment blocks by offering a variety of high-end residential facilities including outdoor garden restaurants, a swimming pool, shopping centers and spacious apartments with rooftop gardens. The complex consists of two parts facing each other to form a central garden on the ground floor, one 25-storey residential block and one 5-storey commercial building featured by a rooftop pool and restaurant.

At the heart of the residential area there’s a park which is the public heart for the residents. Most of the villas and semi-detached houses are facing the park. The objective of the street layout, the green paths and the central park is to create a sense of community and a family friendly neighborhood. Mixed Use Zone on the right side of the site is a high energy area with public functions, outdoor spaces, retail, hospitality, and residential functions. We see here an amazing opportunity to create healthy synergies between the various functions with the plaza at the center incorporating a variety of activities and connectivity.
The previous proposed masterplan design fails to capitalize on the masterplan site potentials. The site neglects the waterfront completely and even places carpark towards the site. The proposed master plan is now divided into main zones - a quiet residential area with low rise typology housing (villas, shop houses, town houses) and an active mixed use which includes the exhibition, plaza, hotel and 3 apartment buildings.
