hank God July is finally here! It’s Mountainfest time! We love this time of year here at Thunder Roads. There is nothing better than getting out on the road and heading to the best party in WV. Each year it seems to get better. See you there. Make sure that you stop by the Thunder Roads trailer and say HI. We have a great edition for you this month. Smiles wrote about the salute we all give each other when we pass while riding. Hillbilly sits down and sips some shine with one of his heroes Owen Schmitt former NFL and more importantly WV football player. We also have our Twists and Turns column that talks about all the good things the Ronald McDonald houses are doing. We have some pictures from around the state of bikers being…well bikers. Are you in the pictures? You can be. Send us your pictures of you and your friends. We love to see you and your events. We hope to see you soon. We are so blessed to have a state that is so beautiful to ride in and around. I hope you get the opportunity to spend some time going down those country roads that make you think you’re almost in heaven. Montani Semper Liberi

Are You Just Getting Wet? John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Water Baptism (being immersed in water in response to receiving salvation). In Matthew 3:13-17, the Lord Jesus himself came to his cousin John to be baptized in order to fulfill all righteousness. He then went on in Matthew 28:19 calling on all believers to follow in his footsteps being baptized in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit. In today’s world we tend to take Gods commandments way to lightly. In some countries the act of baptism requires a lot of courage, countries like Nepal would put you in prison if caught being baptized. You know a wedding ring is an outward sign that a person is married, a military uniform is an outward sign that this person is in a branch of the service. A water baptism is a symbol designed by God to identify a person as a disciple of Jesus Christ. When we are saved we are spiritually baptized into Christ, that means all who are baptized in Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. A water baptism is just like your funeral, it’s a act of faith in which we testify, both to God and the world, that the person we were is dead and buried, and we are raised as a new creation in Christ!!! Romans 6:4. Being baptized is a command from God not a option. It’s a act that God requires of every believer. Mark 16:16.

his love to us. When we receive Gods saving Grace, it is no accident that he calls us to identify with him in a way that makes it real to us. Are you struggling with guilt over your past? It may be because you haven’t yet given the person you once was a proper burial!! The person we were before is dead forever, and we are raised with Jesus as a totally new creation. It all goes back to Jesus saying in John 14:15 “ If you love me , keep my commandments”if you haven’t taken this step I strongly encourage you to do this as soon as possible. Of course, without first having a relationship with Jesus Christ, You Would Simply Be Just Getting Wet. Sippin Shine with Hillbilly & my guestOwen Schmitt

T

here is nothing I like more than West Virginia Football. My favorite time of year is the fall college football season. Nothing hurts more than a WV loss. My heroes in life usually have something to do with West Virginia. When I was growing up I wanted to be Sam Huff or my all time hero Jerry West. I would probably pass out if I met Jerry West. I think these two are so special to me because my Dad loved them too. When I became a father of three boys I passed that same love for WV sports on to them. The good news is they had new heroes Pat White and this Great fullback that seemed to always make a play when we needed him. Of course I’m talking about Owen Schmitt. How many Saturdays were filled watching those Great WV teams he was a part of? It was a pleasure getting the chance to meet Owen and sitting down on the porch and rocking while we sipped on the Holy water. HB- Why did you choose West Virginia University to go to and to play football? OS- Well they were the only Division 1 program to give me a chance. I thought I would give it a shot and see where it took me. I was playing Division III ball my first year. I had a dream of playing higher ball. So I took a chance. HB- Where were you playing Division III ball? OS- University of Wisconsin River Falls. HB- How did the Coach at WVU see you? OS- I made a highlight tape of me playing Division III ball and my Mom and me drove around and dropped tapes to a few different schools. I told them I was looking to play some ball and I will work as hard as you want me too. Just give a chance and WVU did. HB- You played on some Great teams. What are your best memories? OS- Bonding with all the guys during summer workouts. The locker room camaraderie. That is the stuff I will remember. HB - Are you and the guys that you played with still close and stay in touch? OS - Yes everyone is kind of in transition right now. We have been out of football for a few years. We are all trying to get our lives together but when we get around each other it’s like we never left. We will always have a special bond between us. HB- Okay when you left WVU you went to play for the THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE WEST VIRGINIA

Seattle Seahawks. How was that? Tell me about being an NFL player. OS- I was drafted in the fifth round and went out there for a couple of years. The team was in transition and in between coaches. I went through three coaches in two years. Just didn’t work out after the third year they wanted to go in a different direction. It was a bummer for me because I thought it was my best preseason yet. I was sitting on the couch about a week later and Philadelphia called me and it was game on in Philly. Played there 2 years and then went to Oakland and played a year. Who knows the phone may ring again. HB- Tell me about the place Owen Schmitt’s Saloon and Davisson Brothers Music Hall. OS- It is kind of a collaboration of Chris Davisson and me talking about doing something like this. I had another business partner come up to me when I was playing in Oakland. We got some plans and it all came together and things are going well so far. Chris and I wanted to bring some good live music to Morgantown and we came up with the Saloon. So far people seem to really like it. Good place to come listen to music get rowdy and have a good time. I want it to be a place that in 20 years is a staple of the area, I hope it’s a place where people come and really enjoy themselves. It’s nice when you meet someone that turns out to be everything you hoped he would be. Owen may have been born elsewhere but he has become a true Mountaineer. He is proud to call WV home and plans to stay. I really enjoyed getting to know him and hope that he keeps bringing live music to the area. Just in the past few months Ronnie Dunn, Shooter Jennings, Wyatt Turner, and of course The Davisson Brothers have performed among many others. Keep checking in Thunder Roads and on the Schmitt’s Saloon for future acts. I saw Craig Morgan and Colt Ford were coming. Hopefully we can get them to sit down and sip a little with me. If you haven’t been up to Schmitt’s Saloon make it a point to get there soon. You won’t regret it. Tell Them Hillbilly from Thunder Roads sent you. Remember when your sippin always share with friends and always lose the lid. God Bless you until next time. Hillbilly

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, the Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 60 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early). Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers). A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government. Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens. Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your MP, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle. Sincerely, The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.) P.S. - Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions; The Light at the End of the Tunnel has now officially been turned off.

WHY don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’ WHY? do people order bacon double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke. WHY? do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. WHY? do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. WHY? do they make hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. WHY do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? WHY are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? WHY didn’t Noah swat those two f’in mosquitoes? At breakfast, the husband says to his wife “What would you do if I won the Lotto?” “I’d take half of it and leave you” she says! “Great” he says. “I won $12 bucks yesterday. Here’s $6. Stay in touch”.

W

hen I first started riding, one of the coolest things I enjoyed was the “biker wave”. It made me feel a sense of pride being acknowledged by other bikers. It’s a symbol that shows an understanding of how it feels to ride, unrestricted from the confines of an automobile. We knew what it meant to be one with the road. I decided to dig deeper and research how this originated and, if in fact, it meant the same to other bikers as it did to me. According to my research, it originated one day in 1904 when Arthur Davidson passed William Harley, and since they knew each other, they waved. Well, another biker saw the two “Kings of Motorcycles” doing this and thought it was a biker necessity, thus the tradition was born. When motorcycles weren’t as popular as they are today, a wave showed their separation from other people on the road. These riders took the chance of bad weather and road conditions just to experience the scents, sounds, and feeling the wind in your face. Similar to how school bus drivers always wave to each other, it’s an understanding that they have chosen to drive this overly bulky vehicle to ensure that our children make it safely to school and back.

used. I personally have always used the low peace sign which I learned stands for “peace on the road”. Then there is the low fisted wave which indicates a sense of “power on the road”. Often times you will find a biker is unable to wave, such as at a stop light, so you might receive a simple head nod which translates into “yes, we know”. Every once in a while you might encounter the open hand, raised high and waving vigorously. Similar to how we felt when we first rode without our training wheels as kids. I will jokingly refer to this as the “geek” wave. Give them time and appreciate that we all went through our first rides. The most important thing I learned about the wave is that it indicates we are one, we are like family. Although we have never met, the understanding was there that if you needed anything, we would be there to help.

An example of this was when I was returning home from the “Burn Ride”, and driving across the Bay Bridge, I had a flat tire. I was forced to pull over, and I panicked about what my next steps would be. Car after car passed me by. Finally, a group of bikers saw that a comrade needed assistance and pulled over to help. I was fortunate that one of them had some “Fix-A-Flat” so As history has shown, the early negative connotations that that I was able to continue on to the Annapolis Harley where were associated with motorcycle riders, or “bikers”, only I could replace my tire. helped to solidify this sense of community in an “us against I continued on my journey home with a feeling of brotherhood them” sort of way, or more accurately “them against us”. and knew that I had the best assurance that any problems The more I read into this, the more I learned about, not only that may cross my path would be resolved with a little help the reason for the wave, but the many different waves bikers from my friends.

Ronald McDonald Houses

I

Big Macs, Happy Meals, and a Clown with a very Big Heart!

never knew that the hundreds of Big Macs that I have eaten over the years would lead me to a chance to help people in need. First, let me say this is not a commercial for McDonald’s restaurants. I will give them a huge Thank You for all they have done to help so many families during their time of need in the world.

important thing. Making sure their sick child gets better.

Let’s go back in time to October 15, 1974 in Philadelphia. That’s the day the first Ronald McDonald house opened thanks to Philadelphia Eagle player Ken Hill had a daughter named Kim that had Leukemia. Dr. Audrey Evans, Ken Hill, Leonard Tose, owner of the Eagles, Jim Murray, the Eagles General Manager, Ed Rensi the regional manager for McDonalds. The owner/operators of McDonalds in Philadelphia shared the proceeds from the shamrock shakes to help start the home away from home. Ten years later in 1984 Ronald McDonald house charities are officially started in memory of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc a strong advocate for children. McDonalds does not own the houses but remain a very important partner in helping to keep the dream alive of helping families get well faster. The first sentences of the vision for RMH say it all. Their vision is that when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community, which can ultimately change the world. It comes down to something they see everyday, children heal faster with their family around them. They can’t take the pain away but can help ease the experience by having a Childs family there. We all know how this feels. When something hurts I still want my Mommy. You can laugh but you know you’re thinking he’s right I do want my Mommy. It always feels better if Mommy is there. A basic concept that grew into RMH in 58 different countries and regions around the world. Who knew that having a shamrock shake would help so many kids and their families? Every year RMHC helps 7 million families stay together and focus on the most THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE WEST VIRGINIA

No family should have to worry about finding something to eat or where to lay their head down at such a difficult time. RMHC gives a family a place to live and be together while a child gets the help they need. I was told by a staff member it costs about $160.00 a day for a family of four to stay at RMHC. The good news is they only ask for a donation of up to $25.00 per day. If a family can’t pay they will still get to stay. What a great place. How can they do this? I’m glad you asked. We can all help. Most McDonald’s have a box that you can put your change in. The RHMC also sponsor several fundraisers throughout the year. In Morgantown there is a motorcycle poker run in July to benefit RMHC. Date to be determined. Stay in touch with us at our Facebook page for more information. If you’re reading this and saying to yourself I don’t have money to donate right now. They have volunteer opportunities for you as well. In general they have ways we all can help. I’ve been in the biker community almost my whole life and I know how much all of us do to help. I also know that there is nothing that brings a brother or sister to our knees the way a sick child does. I pray there will come a day when we no family needs to stay at RMHC. Until then they truly do keep the light burning for those families in need, Thank God for the work they do. Let’s make it a goal of Thunder Roads readers that we are going to look out for those families in need with a sick child. The last thing any of us in that situation needs is to worry where we will sleep and eat tonight. I know we will make a difference for these families and then they will know what it means to be BIKER STRONG. Please go to www.rmhc.org to find and help a Ronald McDonald house near you. Hillbilly

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

U.S. HOUSE VOTES DOWN FEDERAL HELMET LAW PUSH The Obama Administration’s proposed GROW AMERICA Act, a four-year $302 billion transportation funding measure, contains a provision to allow NHTSA to begin lobbying states and state legislators “to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws,” effectively overturning a ban against such federal lobbying on the issue that has been in place since 1995. But on June 9th, by a voice vote on the floor of 229-192 (10 absent or abstaining), the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment offered by U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to strike that provision from the House’s version of the legislation; titled the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4745). The full bill was approved by the House the following day, with the offending language in Section 102 of H.R. 4745 successfully eliminated, but the Senate version of this highly politicized and largely partisan transportation funding bill is still under consideration. The Administration “strongly opposes House passage of H.R. 4745,” and “looks forward to working with the Congress on an orderly appropriations process…” “VISION ZERO” HITS NYC A controversial European traffic control plan referred to as “Vision Zero” has found its way to American shores, as NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has gained support of the New York City Council for his Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024. On May 29, 2014, the City Council approved a package of new policies aiding Mayor de Blasio’s quest to end traffic deaths, modeled after a Swedish philosophy that treats all road deaths and serious injuries as inherently preventable, the initiative has become the centerpiece of the new administration’s transportation agenda. Among the changes approved, which includes misdemeanor charges or loss of license for hitting a pedestrian or cyclist, certain “exhibition behavior” from motorcyclists will not be tolerated under the law. The new rules governing motorcycle behavior outlaws “wheelies, doughnuts, burnouts and revving” -- a first offense would be punishable by up to 60 days in jail. AMERICAN LEGION RIDER DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY “NO COLORS” POLICY Bikers all across South Florida are threatening to boycott and protest a restaurant after a member of the American Legion Riders said he was discriminated against for riding a motorcycle and wearing patches that proclaim his military service. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE WEST VIRGINIA

Proud Navy veteran Robert Thompson of Pompano Beach told WPTV Channel 5 (NBC) that a manager at the Old Key Lime House told him to remove his leather vest because they do not allow “gangs or colors” and that “his kind” was not welcome. Within days of the incident, hundreds of veterans and bikers began sharing what happened through social media. A Facebook page was even created to boycott and protest the Old Key Lime House. Fearing backlash, management at the restaurant suspended the employee who made the comments, and the owner has apologized, calling it “a terrible misunderstanding.” A manager at the restaurant told the TV news station that their “no colors or gangs” policy should not have been applied, claiming that the restaurant welcomes bikers and veterans; although a sign still hangs at the bar that states: “WELCOME ALL BIKERS – NO PATCHES or CLUB AFFILIATION ALLOWED – LEAVE IT ON BIKE” Thompson said he did not speak out to cause controversy but to stop discrimination, no matter what someone looks like, from happening again anywhere. MINNESOTA APPROVES PURPLE HEART MOTORCYCLE LICENSE PLATE Few U.S. states offer the option to get a personalized motorcycle license plate. Minnesota just approved a bill to create a special motorcycle license plate for wounded combat veterans which will be a shrunken version of the Purple Heart plates that car owners can get. MOTORCYCLE THEFTS CONTINUE DOWNWARD TREND Motorcycle thefts continued to decline in 2013, a downward trend that began in 2008; and of five major brands only Harley-Davidson owners saw an uptick in the number of stolen bikes. According to new data released by the National Crime Information Center, an electronic clearinghouse of nationwide crime data aggregated by the FBI, overall last year there were 45,367 reported motorcycle thefts nationwide, the equivalent of one every nine minutes, down 1.5%, even as bike sales increased. Of those stolen, there were 3,907 Harley-Davidsons, up 4% from 2012, while the percentage of stolen Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycles fell 2.1% (Kawasaki) to 9.1% (Suzuki). Honda was the bike stolen most often, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and HarleyDavidson. The thefts were highest in California, followed by Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Indiana. Thirty seven percent of the motorcycles reported stolen in the U.S. in 2013 were recovered, compared with about 50% of the stolen cars.

IS MOTOX DANGEROUS FOR OUR KIDS???

At a time when two motocross communities in different parts of the world are reeling at the death of two 14 year olds being killed in motocross accidents - we have so many people questioning us as to “Why?? Why we allow our children to participate in such a dangerous sport” Trent Haywood and Austin Mincey were doing something they were so passionate about - motocross. It had been in their blood for years, it was what they thought about daily, it was what they dreamt about nightly and it was something that drove them to be the best they could be on the track. Why would you try and take that passion away from them and all those kids that ride MX?? Trent Haywood was from Tauranga, New Zealand and was killed competing at the Michael Godfrey Memorial, Austin Mincey was racing in Indianapolis, USA in a qualifying race, when he crashed. Although it was the same date that Trent died June 1st , NZ is a day ahead so it was June 2nd for us. Austin passed away 3 days later from his injuries on June 3rd. As a parent, we get nervous when our child heads out onto the track some hate watching the starts, some hate watching the jumps and some are nervous just watching their child racing hard out to gain that extra position on the track. As parents, we THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE WEST VIRGINIA

endeavor to supply them with the best protection money can buy, a consistently well maintained race bike and training and practice that helps to reduce the risk of injury to himself and those that he rides against. My son plays rugby for 60 minutes on a Saturday morning in NZ - rugby is a very physically demanding sport - motocross still has to be ‘THE’ most physically demanding sport in the world - rugby is a rugged tough sport with 15 players up against 15 others, charging at each other like trains storming down railway tracks, tackling each other so hard it is bone crunching. Unlike American Gridiron, the only protection I send my son on the field with is a mouth guard - more to protect his beautifully aligned teeth after 18 months of expensive braces, but definitely not to protect him from injury. Maybe I should be questioning myself about why I send him out there like that, and yet others still question me about how I can send my son out on a track to participate is such a dangerous sport like MX. On a day when New Zealand is reeling from the death of an innocent shop owner who was stabbed by a 13 year old boy in a daylight robbery you question us about why we allow our children to do MX?? On a day when America is also reeling from the death of a student in another school shooting in Portland, Oregon - you JULY 2014

question us about why we allow our children to do MX? I know where my child is and I know who my child is associating with - that is protection in itself. If I did not know those things - then “yes” I should be nervous - nervous about where my child is heading in the future, not why I allow him to participate in a sport like MX. Austin Mincey’s parents were praised for allowing their son to follow his dream to be a motocross racer. “You gave him his dream - his dream was to be a motocross racer and that’s who he is and what he is. Motocross separates us from our home into a bigger family, a motocross family. Mincey family, you see guys with jerseys on, that’s family. Austin was our family. We may come from different backgrounds and different parts of the world, but we’re a family and Austin was a part of that big, big family. That’s the best thing about the sport and you guys gave that to him.” There are so many things in this world right now that want to distract our children and pull them away from us and the one thing they love doing - and yet they still question us about why we allow our children to do MX??
