The function of the fortress was to avoid the passage across the river Rhine between Montlingen and the Lake Constance and to baffle an attack across the lake from the region Lindau in order to enable the mobilisation in the inland. The command of the German Armed Forces prized the vigor of the fortress so that it was already avoided by the attack planing. The Operation “Tannenbaum” contained the passage: “An attack across the Rhine only from eastern direction between Lake Constance and Sargans is not suggested due to the mountainous area and the strong fortress”.
