Ohio Latino Fest 2010 By Ricardo Colon
T
he First Ohio Latino Fest 2010 was held in Cleveland at Nautica Pavilion October 2. Although the weather did not cooperate, it was impressive that several thousand people came to enjoy the international star Gilberto Santa Rosa. Some consider Santa Rosa to be the greatest salsa performer today. The event kicked off with local talent from throughout the State of Ohio. From Columbus was Dejavu, a group that played music from Peru, Venezuela, Colombia and United States. Led Peruvian Enrique Infante, Dejavu is known for its Latin fusion rhythms and has played through Ohio. Karen Labra is from Youngstown and is 12 years old. She is one of the youngest mariachi singers in the country and was featured on the famous international television programs, Sabado Gigante, with Don Francisco. She competed on the show and was noted as one of the

most promising mariachi performer in the country. In between each performance, there were various dance groups representing many Latin American countries, including Alma de Mexico, Raices de Peru, Julia de Burgos Dance Group, Perla de Caribe, Grupo Isla del Encanto, Paises Unidos, and the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland. Also, performing was the young Mexican rock group from Youngstown called Adrian and Friends, whose music was definitely rock with a distinct Latin flare. And from Cleveland, there was Bori-Q and Jonathan “El Romantico. El Romantico performed a mix of Raggaeton

and R&B, while Bori-Q did an outstanding job performing some of his own reggaeton arrangements. One of the most pleasant surprises was Banda Tecno Caliente, whose very uplifting, energy driven music put everyone in a festive, “let’s dance” frame of mind. I predict this band will soon become one of the most popular Mexican dance bands in the U.S. Yet another key performer from Youngstown was Angel Lopez, who, if you did not pay attention, made you think Marc Anthony was there. He performed several songs from Marc Anthony’s top hits, and the crowd went crazy. It was clear that this young performer was the pleasant surprise of the evening. nationally acclaimed reggaeton artists, will be the opening act for Daddy Yankee’s European tour. They kept the audience on their feet with a series of reggaeton and bachata numbers. Everyone would agree that the real stars of Latino Fest 2010 were the cancer survivors whose fashion show was impressive, exciting and moving. Anyone who did not respond that way just was not really there. The group from MetroHealth’s Amiga Unidas Breast Cancer Survivors Program worked with Julia de Burgos’ Modeling and Refinement program coordinated by Yasin Cuevas, Jasmin Santana, Iveliss Roig. Ohio Latino fest 2010 would not have been possible without the support of title sponsor McDonald’s, supporting sponsors COSE, Walmart, Boost Mobile, Thomas J. Unik Insurance Company, MetroHealth, and Virginia Marti College of Art and Design, and media sponsors VoceroLatino, Latino Magazine, latinocleveland.com, tropicalcleveland.com, and Latino Media Network. Next year the plan is to make this a two day event in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. 12 | LATINOS noviembre

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Celebrates Latino Heritage Month By Ricardo Colon
T
he Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held its Latino Heritage Festival featuring Ismael Miranda, featuring Sammy De Leon y su Orquestra, along with Divino, Grupo Isla Del Encanto, and Perla de Caribe. The concert was a dynamic mix of international and local talent. Grupo Isla Del Encanto led off the celebration and once again demonstrated why we in northeast Ohio always respond warmly to them. Their performance of traditional Puerto Rican dance, complete with their colorful costumes, reminds us of the marvelous musical and dance of the Puerto Rican rhythms. These are the cultural foundations of today’s music and dance. Perla de Caribe combined the rhythms of salsa and reggaeton to energize the crowd. Their creativity in building on traditional dance and music styles responds to today’s youth and infects in the entire audience with their energy. Divino is an acclaimed reggaeton artist who was nominated for two Billboard Awards – Best New Artist and Best Tropical Album. His work is a self examination, with and personal historic and emotional reflections. His performance was enthusiastically received. The audience actually sang along with his songs – clearly an indication of the strength of his following. Not being familiar with Divino before,

I can honestly say I was impressed and will certainly follow his career more closely. Headliner, Ismael Miranda, sang a number of his biggest hits, much to the delight of his fans and those who have not had exposure to his style previously. Sammy De Leon out did himself in accompanying Miranda. It may have been the best performance by Sammy and his group perform that I have experienced. Miranda is the ultimate showman. Many of us remember him from his days with the Fania All-stars, when he was known as the “The pretty Boy of Salsa.” He began his career when he was 17 years old and has performed with some of the greatest names in Salsa – Willie Colon, Johnny Pacheco, Bobby Valentin, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaria, Bobby Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, and Ricardo Ray. While the weather was great, being outside the doors of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was symbolic of

the lack of Latino artists inside the Hall. They say that a requirement for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is that the artist and their music had to have had an impact or influence of the development of rock and roll. Carlos Santana was heavily influenced by the Latino music of his roots, and his music had a significant impact of rock and roll. Ritchie Valens was not voted in just because of “Donna.” Many enjoy the rhythms of “La Bamba” with its Latin folk music roots. We look forward to the day when artists like Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, Jose Feliciano, Gloria Estefan and other established Latino artists like Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez are nominated and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thanks to the City of Cleveland, Lucy Torres and the Rock Hall staff for their efforts and the wonderful concert event honor Latino heritage celebration.

lvis Crespo, born in New York City, was raised in the city of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, where he spent his childhood and adolescent years. New York City borough of the Bronx on July 30, 1971. He lived there until he was six years old. After his parents divorced, he left with his mother to live in Guaynabo, just outside of Puerto Rico’s capital city, San Juan. Although Cre-
spo would visit his father back in New York City almost every summer as he was growing up, he identified more with his Puerto Rican roots. Indeed, he was so immersed in the Puerto Rican communities of Guaynabo and New York City that he later had to relearn English as an adult in order to do extensive promotional work in North America. Growing up in Puerto Rico, Crespo at first
dreamed of a future as a baseball player, until he realized that his skills were probably not good enough for a professional career. He also held another ambition: to join the Puerto Rican pop group Menudo. A long-running entertainment institution in Puerto Rico, Menudo consisted of several adolescent male singers who were replaced as they became teenagers. He first gained fame in the mid-90s when he
joined Grupo Mania, in Puerto Rico. Eventually he decided to try to go solo in 1998. His debut album, Suavemente was a hit, both in Latin America and in the US. The single “Suavemente” was a huge hit and eventually helped him earn the Best Male Tropical/ Salsa Album of the Year from Billboard magazine. His album went platinum in the Venezuelan and Central American markets and gold in Chile. Released in
1998, Crespo’s debut also earned a gold album for sales of over 500,000 copies in the first year after its release in the United States. “Suavemente” set a record for holding the top position on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks chart for six weeks. Part of the song’s success was its unexpected crossover appeal to English-speaking listeners, particularly in Miami and New York. His album was mostly merengue in-
fluenced, but his followup albums would venture from these roots eventually. Wow Flash! is Elvis Crespo’s third solo recording for Sony Music. Elvis Crespo’s latest album, Regresó el Jefe, went on sale on 5 June 2007, with its first single being “La Foto Se Me Borró.” He dedicated this album to his niece, Wilmarie Agosto Crespo, who died in a car accident on March 28, 2007. www.latinosmagazineonline.com | 19

demasiado.
