albion away adventures on the road in the late 1980s

an away trip these days can be quite comfortable in many ways. football aside, it’s all m&s at service stations and pendolino trains. 25 years ago though, away games were a different experience. albion were relegated to the old division 3 in 1987, promoted back to division 2 a year later and reached the play-off finals in 1991. that perhaps reads better than it was, and away games were as up and down as our form. this was the era of home fans intent on trouble, apathetic local plod, death trap grounds (literally, sadly), union jack flags and 15 foot fences penning you onto the terrace. a rare 3 points was the occasional reward for those who did travel, but as we say, football can often ruin a great away day. some albion fans, obviously predicting that people would like to see photos of these provincial away grounds decades in the future, brought their cameras on these trips, and we present some of the best.
