From Rabbi Litwak’s Study geniza, where these sacred writings are kept. Perhaps the most famous geniza in history was the one found in the Ben Ezra synagogue in Cairo. It contained over 200,000 documents.

“Make your books your companions; let your cases and shelves be your pleasure grounds and gardens. Bask in their paradise, gather their fruit, pluck their roses, take - Judah ibn Tibbon their spices...”

Temple Sinai’s geniza is found in the storage room in the back of our Kemelhor Chapel. Every few years, when our geniza fills up, we take them to the cemetery. Beth David Cemetery in Hollywood is kind enough to open a grave for us and, with the same care and love that we use when we bury a human loved one, we bury our geniza materials.

I love my books. With rare exception, I can tell you where each and every one of them is on my shelves. They are my resources, my entertainment, and my guides. Like food, my books sustain me as Francis Bacon said, “Some books are to be tasted, others swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.” They are reminders of rabbis who are no longer with me in this world but continue to be a part of my life through the gifts of their books.

Many of you have old siddurim (prayer books) or chumashim (Torah commentaries) that you hold onto because you do not know what else to do with them. Please feel free to bring them to the front office by November 11 and we will add them to our materials. If you would like to participate in helping bury our sacred books, we will be doing it over two days: Sunday November 15 at 9:30 a.m. and Monday, November 16 at 9:00 a.m.

Unfortunately, as with everything in life, my books wear out. Edges fray, covers tear, and the pages fall out. I sadly let them go. Yet, some books are treated differently than others.

Jewish tradition, dating back 2,000 years to the time of the Talmud, teaches that all holy writings (anything with God’s name on it), should be set aside in a place where they cannot be destroyed. This place is called a geniza, which means “reserved” or “hidden” in Hebrew. Later in history, the geniza tradition expanded to include any document that dealt with a sacred subject. A word from the Executive Director, Mark A. Weber In the spirit of this month of Thanksgiving, allow me to take this opportunity to send out a few quick “thank you notes” in appreciation of our wonderful Temple Sinai Community:  Thank you… to our unparalleled clergy Rabbi Alan Litwak and Cantor Norman Cohen Falah, for your inspiring and comforting spiritual leadership each and every day.  Thank you… to our amazing administration, faculty, and staff, for your dedication and for the professional talents you lend across all facets of our organization.  Thank you… to our Board of Trustees, leadership, and all who participate as committee members and volunteers, for making such a huge difference in everything that you do, and to whom we are all grateful and indebted.

 Thank you… to our JSA and Religious School parents, for entrusting us with the Jewish and secular education of your children as our next generation – L’Dor Vador.  Thank you… to each of our Partners, for your commitment in enabling our Temple Sinai Community to fulfill our mission of Nurturing Fuller Jewish Life, whether spiritually, educationally, or culturally, and for your generosity of time, energy, passion, and financial support.  Thank you… personally, for the opportunity to serve.  Thank you… to our Jewish tradition that teaches us about the importance of gratitude and giving thanks -- the Torah and its value system demand that we be grateful and thankful, not only in attitude but in our words and deeds as well.  And finally, to paraphrase the late composer and songstress Debbie Friedman… Thank you God, that I am not a turkey on this Thanksgiving Day! A happy and joyous Thanksgiving holiday to you and your families.

Mark A. Weber A word from the President of the Board, Ellen Halem The wind is howling, the skies are covered in heavy gray clouds and it is 85 degrees outside. This is my favorite time of year in South Florida. I know that cooler days are right around the corner and Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. Every morning when I wake up I think to myself that this is the day when I will need to throw on a sweater before walking out the door. This year our children are joining us as we celebrate the holiday on the west coast of Florida. There, we will have a few days to enjoy each other’s company, reminisce, create new memories and give thanks that we are able to spend this time together. Merritt and I will miss the autumn colors of the maple leaves as they change from jade green to flaming red and the oak leaves as they turn a golden brown, but we know that our Northern family will gladly trade heavy coats, hats and scarves for bathing suits and flip flops, even if only for a few days. Having the chance to spend the holiday weekend with our children and grandchildren will be a wonderful way to give thanks, while

at the same time enjoy a relaxing, “I don’t have to make the turkey,” holiday. I am also looking forward to traveling to Orlando for the URJ Biennial at the beginning of November. The Temple Sinai community will be well represented as we travel together to study, worship, and network with other Reform Jews. We will explore and develop new ideas to strengthen our community, all while having a little bit of fun. We promise to bring back new ideas that can be infused into our Temple Sinai organization to help make us more responsive to the needs of our partners. I want to wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving spent with family and friends that bring you joy.

Ellen Halem

Jacobson Sinai Academy News! A Message from JSA’s K-8 Principal, Mrs. Toni Weissberg Our focus this month is Social Studies. Fifth grade has been learning about the Native American tribes that were in the Americas before Columbus. They are also studying all of the different explorers that discovered and settled in the new world. In addition to learning the history, many hands-on activities were completed. For the Aztecs, Mayas, and Inuit tribes, the students participated in a Webquest, an Internet based lesson where students complete different activities on the web, in small groups. Then the students presented their research in different forms, such as, PowerPoint, skit, or posters, to the rest of the class. For the study of the explorers, the students began working with partners to research an assigned explorer. After the research is completed, they will create a map of the voyage, make a 3D model of a tool that was used, and will draw a portrait of the explorer, in addition to writing a report. These will then be presented to the rest of the class.

As we enter November and realize that the first quarter of the school year has passed, I am happy to report that our school is doing well and our students are flourishing. As I reflect upon the past few months, I am thankful for the excellent staff, students and parents here at Jacobson Sinai Academy. As we celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, let us remember how fortunate we are and for how much we have to be thankful. Wishing all of my families a very happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Warmly,

Mrs. Toni Weissberg - K - 8 Principal

Jacobson Sinai Academy - Department of Admissions We are very pleased and proud to communicate some exciting and important information regarding enrollment and tuition for the 20162017 school year at Jacobson Sinai Academy. Mrs. Toni Weissberg will continue to lead as K-8 Principal – she has been highly impressed with the quality of the teachers and the top-notch academic curriculum at JSA and brings a sense of stability and extended leadership throughout our entire community. Mrs. Judy Mendelsohn will remain as the highly valued ECE Principal. JSA will continue to make targeted investments in areas that will strengthen the school’s capabilities and curriculum, as well as in the security infrastructure.
