A word from our newly elected President of the Board, Murphy Leopold So, TSND has taken recycling to the next level: its presidents. It’s been 15 years since I began my first term as President of Temple Sinai of North Dade. Then, I was the parent of a child at Jacobson Sinai Academy. Then, the congregation was in search mode for the new rabbi. Then, Destiny’s Child, with Beyoncé, had a chart topping album. Then, Trayvon Martin was 6 years old. Then, 9/11 was just a day on the calendar. Today, I am the proud parent of a University of South Florida graduate. Today, our new rabbi has been a success for the past 14 years. Today, Beyoncé has a chart topping album. Today, hoodies are a proven risky wardrobe choice for many. Today, we are x-rayed to board a flight, and our campus is fully-fenced and guarded.
County. They organized; they hired; they worshipped together; they built; they raised funds; they celebrated together. Let’s imagine that they didn’t always agree. From my bimah seat, I saw founders, founders’ children, and founders’ grandchildren. We have depth, and history, and ancestors. We thrive and survive. Our foundation is solid. Let’s agree that 60 years is a cause to celebrate. Let’s stay focused on our successes as we adjust when we fail. Let’s confront threats: economic, demographic, political, and weather related. Let’s be very proud partners at TSND. Together, let’s focus on partnership, and not lose sight of the importance of fundraising. Together, let’s continue to reinforce our identity as a Reform Jewish Congregation. Together, let’s communicate.
I am honored to be returning in this role, and look forward to the expected and unexpected challenges ahead. Possibly, my past experience as President will be equally valuable and worthless, depending. I am delighted to be working with the board members and the executive committee who dedicate their time and talents as volunteers for our community. Our staff and administration have grown immeasurably since “then” with Mark Weber at the helm, as Cantor Norman Cohen Falah engages us musically, and as we count on Rabbi Alan Litwak to keep us on track as a Reform Jewish institution, with tikun olam as a core tenet of our actions. This is a wonderful team.
Summer is here, if indeed it ever really leaves. The holidays will be described as “late” this year, although as always, the holidays arrive exactly on schedule, year after year. The rhythm of the calendar is ever present.
2016 is a big year for TSND; we are celebrating our 60th! From my seat on the bimah at our recent annual congregational meeting, I saw new faces and founders in the same frame. Sixty years ago, men and women had the idea to establish a Reform Jewish congregation in (then) Dade
Murphy Leopold
Even though I am familiar with the tasks of being President of TSND, this feels new, and different, and scary, like the world. I know the rhythm will carry me through the difficult patches, as it has before. Thank you for this opportunity and your support. Most sincerely,
Rabbi Litwak’s Annual Report to Congregation - May 25, 2016 Some of you know that last week, I celebrated the 20th anniversary of my ordination as a rabbi. As I spoke about on Friday evening, if it had not been for a couple of my classmates, this anniversary would have slipped by. However, since it was called to my attention, I took the opportunity to reflect a little bit on the very diverse roles that I serve as a leader of this congregation. What I did not speak about was the change in how I, as a rabbi, complete those varied roles. So much has changed since I was first ordained. When I was ordained, email was still an anomaly. Now, it is central to the work that I do. Printed materials were still primary, while now we communicate largely through digital means (I hope you are receiving and enjoying my Omer thoughts). In fact, technology pervades my teaching, our worship, and our ritual life. This is just one area where we recognize changes. Of course, every year we experience changes and this year was no different. So, on behalf of my partners on the senior staff, I want to share a few highlights. Synagogue Let me begin with the synagogue part of the Sinai equation. This year, we continued to encourage the participation of you, the partners, in leading worship. We had congregants chant Torah, teach, and even speak during services. Next year, we are on track to do even more. I am pleased to mention that we have a larger than usual group of B’nai Mitzvah next winter and spring. In fact, between January and May, we have exactly two free weekends, and for one of them I will be away. I want to especially thank my clergy colleague Cantor Norman who is completing his fourth year and we have more music on our campus
than ever. Credit goes to him for the growth of our adult choral ensemble. Throughout the year, we enjoyed a number of concerts and Shabbatot with guest musicians; in particular our Annual Cantor Irving Shulkes Spring Music Festival with The Maccabeats. He continues to expand our musical repertoire for Shabbat and the holidays. Religious School: Ofra Mor is completing her third year as Religious School coordinator. Through her leadership, our Religious School student body grew and our program got even better. Camp Sinai: Last summer, we created a strategic connection with the Michael Ann Russell JCC. While we were pleased with the program, the JCC did not feel that this was financially advantageous and left our partnership. Susan Warech did not miss a beat. She hired our ECE Curriculum Coordinator, Marjie Cohn Dolan, as Camp Sinai Director, and our ECE teacher, Stephanie Freedman as our Assistant Director. Together, they re-envisioned the program. We were not at all sure about the response and budgeted conservatively to have 84 campers. I am pleased to report that as of this week, Camp Sinai is closed to registration with a whopping 150 campers participating throughout the summer. Our affiliates; Sisterhood, Empty Nesters, the Comite Latino, SNFTY all continue to provide wonderful programming for various constituencies within the Sinai community. Particular highlights included our Sisterhood Casino Night, our Empty Nesters Shabbaton, and a multitude of art classes, lectures, book discussions. This year, we continued our relationship with the African-American Christian community during another special Martin Luther King Shabbat. We still have much work to do and need to redouble our efforts to ensure our core programs are attractive, meaningful, and impactful. [continues on page 4]

Rabbi Litwak’s Annual Report to Congregation - May 25, 2016 [continued from p. 3] At this point, I really want to acknowledge and publically thank our Director of Administration, Susan Warech, who continues to be the jack of all trades, balancing between her administrative work with Mark Weber and her work with me in programming and partnership. I also want to thank Veronica Evelson who serves as a our Communications Coordinator – continually putting together our print and digital communications – never with enough time, and often dragging along tardy lay people and staff. understand where pieces of our operating model have not been successful in the past several years. The Board has already made several corrections. I am confident that we are on a path to long term sustainable operational and financial help.
One of the most significant strategic discussions has centered around our Jacobson Sinai Academy. For several years, you have heard about our efforts to find a sustainable solution for pluralistic Jewish education in North Dade. This year, at the suggestion of our JSA Head of School Toni Weissberg, we brought a new partner to the table. Now we have three parties, all area pluralistic Jewish Day Schools, each bringing Administration different strengths and resources to the table and each committed to Mark Weber is completing his second year as our Executive Director. He creating an entity that will provide a wonderful K-12 liberal Jewish has been a joy to work with and has made my life immeasurably easier. education to our children. Discussions and negotiations are extremely active – thank you to Mark Weber, Murphy Leopold, Lee Goldberg, and For that I am deeply grateful. I particularly want to point out his team: Sophia Ioannou who serve as our core team at the table. I am confident Yohana Rodriguez as our Payroll and Human Resources Coordinator, that all three parties are committed to finding a way to get this done in a Chantal Severe and Bertha Gonzalez as our Accounting and win-win-win. We will share more news in the next few weeks Bookkeeping Team, and of course, Sam William and his maintenance crew for all of the behind the scenes work that makes Sinai run so I want to conclude by thanking our Board of Trustees – our lay leaders smoothly. who give of their time, energy, and expertise. A Message from JSA’s K-8 Head of School, Mrs. Toni Weissberg What an incredibly outstanding school year this has been! I want to begin by thanking all of you for the support and assistance that you have given this year. Parents are children’s first teachers and without the love, nurturing, and constant support that they receive from their parents, teaching them would be an impossible task. It has been a pleasure working with all of our parents this year. On a personal note, thank you so much for the warm welcome that I received when I arrived at JSA and Temple Sinai. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our amazing teachers who dedicate each and every day to the education of your children and have worked so hard all year to make sure that they receive the finest education possible and reach their fullest potential. Congratulations to our graduating 8th graders! I sincerely enjoyed my year with all of you and I especially enjoyed our trip to Philadelphia together! THANK YOU to all our parents for making us feel so special during our class parties. Without your support, thoughtfulness and kind words throughout the year, we could not be the wonderful school that we are! You help us "make it happen" and for that, we are very grateful. Knowing how much we are appreciated validates us and confirms that we truly provide the highest quality of education for (y)our children. When home and school work together as a team the way we have done all year, everyone benefits! I also want to take this opportunity to thank our amazing teachers, who truly love (y)our children and have worked so passionately all year to nurture, teach and protect them. They are the best!
During the summer, we will be mailing all ECE parents forms and information for the coming 2016/2017 school year. Please watch for them in the mail and return the required forms to the school office as soon as possible so that we can plan for the coming school year. Thank you for entrusting us with your children. We truly love them and look forward to seeing many of them happily enjoying our fantastic Summer Camp 2016 beginning June 14. We wish you a safe and fun-filled summer and look forward to seeing you and (y)our wonderful children back at school in August Warmest wishes to all our school families,

PK4’s Swim Program at the JCC Independent and confident are a couple of words that describe how our PK4 children are feeling. Successful and proud are how the teachers are feeling. These are the words that we are using to describe the Swim Gym program that our amazing PK4 children recently completed. Once a week, for ten weeks, our wonderful PK4 children walked proudly over the bridge to the JCC swimming pool. The children learned to put on their goggles and swim caps before getting into their small instructional swimming groups. The Swim Gym instructors were kind, caring, and patient. Every child was excited about going into the pool. The Swim Gym instructors made every child feel comfortable in the water.
From the least experienced swimmer to the most advanced swimmer, everyone made progress in a short amount of time. By the end of the program, the children were swimming back and forth the entire length of the pool! Some of their favorite activities were diving off the platform (dive board) and going under the water to pick up the rings that sunk to the bottom of the pool. After swimming, the children dried off and got dressed by themselves. By the end of the ten weeks, the majority of the students were also putting on their socks and shoes by themselves! We are very proud of all of our PK4 children who participated in the Swim Gym program. If the children had their way, they would be swimming every day!
Parent / Child Classes Our ECE Parent/Child classes, run all year by Joanne Bornstein, held it's last class on May 31. Joanne brought a freshness to the Parent/Child class creating wonderful opportunities for parents not only to bond with their children in a group setting, but to develop lifelong friendships.
Our Parent/Child classes promote early development and provide a strong foundation for your child’s critical first year. Parent/Child classes in the coming 2016 - 2017 school year begin September 6. Classes fill quickly. Please see Raisa or Erika in the ECE office to register.

AMIA Commemoration - Monday, July 18th at 7 PM at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center July 18th, 2016 marks the twentysecond anniversary of the bombing of the AMIA - the Jewish Community Center (Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This event provides the Jewish Community of South Florida with the opportunity to raise awareness and to discuss issues of current concern. The memorial service has become an important gathering for our community, with hundreds of people in attendance, attracting local, national and international media coverage. This year, the AJC Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs together with Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center will host the anniversary and candle lighting ceremony which will be held at the auditorium at the ATJC’s Campus located on 20400 NE 30th Ave, Aventura, FL, 33180, on Monday, July 18th at 7:00 PM.

Nut Free Campus - Keeping Everyone Safe - Submitted by Marissa R. Mintz-Forte “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” –Fred Rogers
many of our families are not aware of this policy. This knowledge is important to protect our children and those whose lives are affected by these allergies. Until you have witnessed the effects of a life threatening food allergy, until you have seen terror in the eyes of a child, until you have watched a loved one suffer, struggling to breathe, you cannot fully understand it all. The time to do something is NOW and not once we’ve experienced a preventable tragedy on our campus. Our campus which includes the Synagogue, our schools, our office, our camp, and any events being held at our facilities all are included in this “peanut and tree nut free” policy. Please read labels carefully to assure you do not mistakenly bring in products that contain peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, macadamia nuts, chestnuts or any other nut ingredient. Please help keep such products off our campus.
The world is a scary place for the 17 million Americans suffering from food allergies. Knowing that everything you may eat or come in contact with may KILL YOU doesn’t give you much self-esteem or sense of security in the world. Even though we have had a peanut and tree nut free campus for some time now, it has come to our attention that
Involving our children, faculty and parents, as well as educating everyone as to the severity of the situation are crucial steps in this process and a lesson in teaching us all “Gemilut Hasidim,” acts of loving kindness and caring for one another. We thank all of you in advance.

Lessons of Nuremberg: Stand Up to Hate and Remember Its Victims - By Irwin Cotler (Source: JTA, Published: 5/03/2016) Yom Hashoah arrived this year on the eve of two historic anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the coming into effect of the Nuremberg Race Laws, which served as prologue and precursor to the Holocaust, and the 70th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials, which served as the foundation for the development of contemporary international human rights and humanitarian law.
so unspeakable, is not only the horror of the genocide itself but that these genocides were preventable.
This historic juncture was the theme of an international legal symposium on May 3 at Jagiellonian University in Krakow and followed the next day by the March of the Living, when some 10,000 young people and survivors marched in remembrance and solidarity from the gates of Auschwitz to Birkenau.
The responsibility to speak truth to power
We must ask ourselves two questions: What have we learned? What must we do? The responsibility of remembrance
Indifference and inaction always means coming down on the side of the victimizer, never on the side of the victim. In the face of evil, indifference is acquiescence, if not complicity in evil itself. The responsibility to bring war criminals to justice If the last century was the age of atrocity, it was also the age of impunity. Few of the perpetrators – despite the Nuremberg Trials – were brought to justice. Just as there must be no sanctuary for hate, no refuge for bigotry, there must be no base or sanctuary for these enemies of humankind. Impunity only emboldens and encourages the war criminals and war crimes. The Holocaust was made possible not only because of the “bureaucratization of genocide,” as described by Robert Lifton and personified by Adolf Eichmann – but because of the "trahison des clercs," the complicity of the elites, including physicians, church leaders, judges, lawyers, engineers, architects and educators. It is our responsibility, then, to speak truth to power, to hold power accountable to truth.
The first lesson is the importance of "zachor," of remembrance of the The responsibility to intervene victims defamed, demonized and dehumanized as prologue and It is revealing, as Henry Friedlander pointed out in his work The Origins justification for genocide, so that the mass murder of 6 million Jews, and of Nazi Genocide, that the first group targeted for killing were the of millions of non-Jews, is not a matter of abstract statistics. Jewish disable. The responsibility to prevent state-sanctioned incitement to hate It is our responsibility to give voice to the voiceless and to empower the and genocide powerless, be they the disabled, poor, elderly, women victimized by The Holocaust succeeded not only because of the industry of death -- of violence or vulnerable children – the most vulnerable of the vulnerable. which the crematoria are a cruel reminder -- but because of the Nazis’ The responsibility of rescue state-sanctioned ideology of hate. Genocide starts with teaching Remembrance and tribute must be paid to the rescuers, the Righteous contempt for, and demonizing, the other. As the Canadian Supreme Among the Nations, like Raoul Wallenberg, who demonstrated that one Court affirmed, “The Holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers – it person with the compassion to care and the courage to act can confront began with words.” evil, resist and transform history. Tragically, the man who saved so many The responsibility to combat old/new anti-Semitism was not himself saved by those who could have. We have a Anti-Semitism is the oldest and most enduring of hatreds and the most responsibility to help discover the fate of this great hero of the lethal. If the Holocaust is a metaphor for radical evil, anti-Semitism is a Holocaust, whom the United Nations called the greatest humanitarian metaphor for radical hatred. of the 20th century. (The Raoul Wallenberg International Roundtable, to From 1941 to 1944, 1.3 million people were murdered at Auschwitz – of be held May 20-21 at Budapest’s Holocaust Memorial Center, will attempt to do just that.) whom 1.1 million were Jews - recalling Elie Wiesel’s dictum that “the Holocaust was a war against the Jews in which not all victims were Jews, The responsibility to remember the survivors but all Jews were victims.” We must always remember – and celebrate – the survivors of the Jews died at Auschwitz because of anti-Semitism, but anti-Semitism did Holocaust, the true heroes of humanity. They witnessed and endured not die there. As we have learned only too tragically, while it begins with the worst of inhumanity, but somehow found, in the depths of their Jews, it doesn’t end with Jews. own humanity, the courage to go on, to rebuild their lives as they helped build our communities. The responsibility to repudiate false witness The Holocaust denial movement – the cutting edge of anti-Semitism old and new – is not just an assault on Jewish memory in its accusation that the Holocaust is a hoax and the Jews fabricated the hoax. Rather it constitutes an international criminal conspiracy to cover up the worst crimes in history. The Holocaust denial movement whitewashes the crimes of the Nazis, as it excoriates the “crimes” of the Jews. And now, in an inversion of the Holocaust, Israel is labeled as a genocidal state and the Jews are smeared as the new Nazis. The danger of indifference and inaction in the face of mass atrocity Holocaust crimes resulted not only from state-sanctioned incitement to hatred and genocide, but from crimes of indifference and from conspiracies of silence – from the international community as bystander. What makes the Holocaust, and more recently the Rwandan genocide,
Together with them, we must remember – and pledge – that never again will we be indifferent to incitement and hate; never again will we be silent in the face of evil; never again will we indulge racism and antiSemitism; never again will we ignore the plight of the vulnerable, and never again will we be indifferent in the face of mass atrocity and impunity. We will speak up – and act – against racism, against hate, against antiSemitism, against mass atrocity, against injustice, and against the crime of crimes whose name we should shudder to mention: genocide. Irwin Cotler is professor of law emeritus at McGill University and founding chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. A former minister of justice and attorney general of Canada and longtime member of Parliament, Cotler is co-chair with Alan Dershowitz of the forthcoming international legal symposium “The Double Entendre of Nuremberg: The Nuremberg of Hate and the Nuremberg of Justice.”
