The dishonest peasant

ONCE upon a time, there lived a dishonest peasant. He eyed his neighbour’s sheep and wanted it for himself. One night, he mounted his horse and rode to the pen where his neighbour kept his sheep. He tied his horse to a bush and crept into the pen. As he did so, the neighbour’s dog heard the peasant and began to bark. The peasant panicked and ran off in the opposite direction that he had crept in, leaving his horse behind. On his return home, his wife asked him why he had walked and what had become of his horse. Instead of telling her the story of his misfortune, he answered by imitating the ‘baaing’ of the sheep and ‘neighing’ of the horse; then he explained the circumstances of his trip. Hence this Greek proverb came into use: for the bleating, we have lost the neighing. A similar proverb in the English language would be the proverb: Penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Proverb: Penny-wise and pound-foolish Meaning: Someone who is penny-wise and pound-foolish can be very careful or mean with small amounts of money, yet wasteful and extravagant with large sums. Example: The roof in my house has been leaking for a while now. I ought to get it repaired right away before more damage is done. Saving a little bit of money now for repairs may lead to more damage in the future. This might turn out to be a case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

My Sister’s Eating Porridge My sister’s eating porridge It’s going everywhere. Up her nose and down her front; A dollop in her hair My sister’s eating porridge, She’s missed her mouth again Now it’s dripping off her spoon Like lumpy porridge rain My sister’s eating porridge And most is on the floor No wonder she is hungry And crying out for, ‘More!’

- John Coldwell

The trains arrived and departed every few minutes. My brother was waiting for me outside the platform. He waved at me when he saw me.

year 4 – going places Imagine that it’s the holiday season and most people will be travelling back to their hometowns to visit loved ones. Remind your friends to stay safe when travelling with their families. Create a small card written with a memorable message or tagline to help them remember safety rules. Below are some examples: 1. Buckle up when in a car, aeroplane or bus. 2. Fasten the strap when using a crash helmet. 3. Wear bright clothes when riding a motorbike. 4. Don’t speed! 5. Babies and young children should be seated in a children’s car seat. Provide your very own examples here: 6. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 7. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 8. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Pick one out of the eight messages above to write in your card. Use at least three words from The Star. Find these words and paste them in your card. You can make cool taglines that rhyme, too. People tend to remember them better. Finally, present your card to your classmates.

year 6 – travelling Imagine that your pen friend from Germany is arriving in Malaysia next week for a short visit. You have just enough time to show your pen friend three interesting sites. year 5 – unique landmarks Pretend that you and your classmates are architects! All of you are tasked to construct a building that is going to be a landmark for the world to see. What would it look like? In groups of four, scan The Star for the five items below. Then, sketch a picture of how your building would look like. Each group of architects will take turns presenting about their design in class. Take questions from friends in other groups if you have the time! These five things – which you will scan from The Star – must be incorporated in your presentation about your unique landmark: 1. The location or site of your landmark: ___________________________ 2. The name of your landmark: ___________________________

2. Cut on the dotted line indicated on the page.

3. The height of your building in numerical form: ___________________________ 4. A person from The Star who would visit your landmark: ___________________________ (Explain why this person would want to visit your building, too.) 5. A special object people would see when they enter your landmark: ___________________________ (Explain why this object is placed in the building and why it is special.)

3. Once you have cut it, you can staple the pages near the folded side.

4. You now have a small and flexible note book.
