Racial harmony at Mid-Autumn Festival Read the news article and answer the questions that follow. Baca rencana berita di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan berikutnya. THE city of Miri saw a celebration of racial harmony and a host of beautiful colours as thousands turned up to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Malay, Indian, Iban and Orang Ulu communities joined in the mooncake feast and lantern processions with their Chinese friends. Thousands lit up beautiful lanterns of all shapes and sizes at the historic Miri Tua Pek Kong Temple on Thursday. State Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who joined the event, was happy to see the celebration held in unity and peace. “The mooncake festival is an important traditional festival celebrated by the Chinese community annually. Such freedom has enabled multiracial people to live in harmony and peace.” Lee added that in Malaysia, people have the freedom to practise their respective religious and cultural beliefs. In the evenings, both the young and the old could be seen playing with their colourful lanterns in the various public recreation parks in different parts of the city. The festivities spilled over to the next day, which was Malaysia Day. (Adapted from The Star, September 21, 2016) 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer. a. Articles ENGLISH has two articles: ‘the’ and ‘a/an’. • ‘The’ is used to refer to specific nouns • ‘A/an’ is used for non-specific nouns. ‘The’ is known as the definite article. ‘A’ and ‘an’ are known as indefinite articles. • If you say, “Let’s read the book,” you mean a specific book you have in mind. For example, The King of Kites. • If you say, “Let’s read a book,” you mean any book (a poetry book, Gulliver’s Travels, or The King of Kites) rather than a specific book. Let’s practise using articles with a game called ‘Simon Says’. How to play: • In order to play this game, each student will prepare three sentences using any of the following articles (a, an, the). • Everyone submits their three sentences on a piece of paper to the teacher who will read out each sentence. • Now everyone stands up to carry out the action that your teacher will read out. • But here’s the catch: you must carry out the action only if your teacher starts the sentence with “Simon says…” • If she does not start her sentence with “Simon says…”, and you carry out the action, then you are out of the game. You will have to be seated. • Everyone (including your teacher) can judge this game. Types of sentences to write for this activity: • Sentences you write have to be something that can be carried out logically in the classroom (or venue) where your English lesson is held. • Examples of sentences you can write: - “Look at the teacher”, - “Point at the tallest student” or - “Wink at a student”. • Don’t write a sentence like: “Touch the student” (because you wouldn’t know which student to touch). So listen carefully - not just for the instruction but also for which article is used. Good luck!

The Lion and the Mouse ONE hot afternoon, the King of the Jungle, Lion, lay asleep in the forest, his great head and mane resting on his paws. A timid little Mouse ran up his hind feet unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion’s nose. This woke the Lion from his slumber and he laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her. “Mercy, mercy, spare me!” begged the poor Mouse. “Please let me go and someday, I will surely repay you.” The Lion was amused and he roared with laughter. “What? To think that a Mouse like you could ever help me?” he gloated. But he was in a generous mood as he had just eaten a hearty meal. So he let the Mouse go. Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in a hunter’s net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse recognised the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net. She ran up to one of the great ropes that bound him and she gnawed at it until it parted. Soon, the Lion was free. “You laughed when I said I would repay you,” said the Mouse. “Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion.” And with that, they parted ways, her debt repaid to the King of the Jungle.

Treasures of Malaysia READ this passage on the importance of the mangrove forest. Then, complete the word search puzzle based on the words in bold. Discuss the meaning of those words with your teacher as you go through the answers. Mangroves are mainly found in the tropical climate, especially along sheltered coastal regions and places where rivers constantly deposit clay and silt. Why are mangrove forests important? Mangroves provide nursery areas for juvenile fish and crustaceans. They also produce nutrients for the marine ecosystem. In short, mangroves provide shelter and food for the marine creatures. But most importantly, mangroves protect the coastline from soil erosion during tropical storms! You may not realise this but mangroves are also important for our survival! How so? Mangroves form thick barriers against storms and tsunamis. It breaks down the force of waves that thrash on to the shores during such storms hence saving lives and protecting property. They are known as storm buffers! Do you know that the mangrove forest helped reduce the loss of lives and property in a terrible natural disaster in 2004? An earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck near Sumatra, Indonesia. The deadly quake caused a tsunami. Although many people died, the mangrove actually helped reduce the impact of waves that were 30 metres high (98.4 feet)! These mangrove trees slowed down the speed of the waves that hit the shores of Banda Aceh in Sumatra. Mangroves also provide us with many other benefits like fruits, medicine, fibre and wood. They stabilise shores by trapping sediments and building land. They improve water quality by filtering polluted waters. They protect the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing the amount of greenhouse gas. So support laws for the management of the mangrove forest. They are crucial to our survival.

Dear ______, How are you? I hope you are fine. I joined a trip to Kuala Selangor and it was fun! First, we went to explore the mangrove forest. It was amazing to see different species of mangrove trees. The next day, we went jungle trekking at Taman Alam. I enjoyed taking photos of the view. Besides that, we also had the chance to watch fireflies glowing at night. Lastly, we went sightseeing at Bukit Melawati. It was great as I got to feed the monkeys there. I hope we can explore nature together in the future. Your cousin, (Your name) Page 18 A. 1. False 2. True 3. True 4. False 5. True B. 1. howling 2. shock 3. brave 4. raised 5. higher
