Doing the right thing Read the story below and answer the questions that follow. Baca teks di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan yang diberikan. RAJESH and Chua live next door to each other. They both attend SK Sungai Pala and are in the school’s football team. Every Saturday evening, they have football practice at a football field in the neighbourhood. They would always walk to the field together. One day, as they were walking, Rajesh caught something glinting in the grass in front of him. He was curious, so he bent down and picked up a shiny object. It was a gold bracelet. He looked around to see if anyone might have dropped it, but no one else, save for Chua, was around. Chua suggested that Rajesh keep it for himself. After all, there was no one around and Rajesh had found it. Rajesh shrugged and said, “Let’s try looking for its owner after practice.” When football practice was over, Rajesh and Chua went around asking if anyone was looking for a lost item. After about an hour, they gave up. Chua asked Rajesh what he was going to do with the bracelet now. He replied: “_____________.” 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer (a) Rajesh and Chua are ____.

Say it with feeling WE are going to play a game using adverbs of manner and the tone of our voices. Now, with our voices, we are going to express how we feel in three tones: low, middle and high. • If you use a low pitch that means you may be sad, or depressed. • If you use a middle pitch that means you feel quite neutral. • If you use a high pitch that means you are excited and happy. In front of his classmates, each person is going to say this phrase: I LOVE YOU. But here’s the catch, listed below are several adverbs of manner. Your teacher will cut them out and pass them to you randomly. When it comes to your turn, you will stand and say the words I LOVE YOU according to the adverb you have been given. The other students will guess your adverb based on the tone you say it in. Note to teacher: Practice sessions needed as a class before actual activity starts. Carry out several examples with the students so that they associate the intonation with the right (negative, positive or neutral) adverbs. You may also need to go through the list of adverbs of manner below to ensure understanding and definition of the adverbs.

Teen puffers on the rise Read the story below and answer the questions that follow. Baca cerita di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan yang berikutnya. AN average of 50 to 60 teenagers are picking up the smoking habit daily nationwide and this is worrying, said the Health Ministry. Its senior director (Dental Health) Dr. Noor Aliyah Ismail said: “Based on the Tobacco Survey Malaysia 2015, about five million people, aged 15 and above, or 22.8% of the nation’s smokers, are active smokers. “This is a worrying fact that has to be taken seriously as the younger generation is fast picking up the smoking habit.” She said this in her speech at the state-level Dental Carnival 2016 organised by the Ministry at Mydin Mall in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, on Tuesday. Dr. Noor Aliyah said World Health Organisation statistics showed that about one billion people worldwide were smokers. She warned that each cigarette stick has over 4,000 poisonous chemicals, the most dangerous being tar and nicotine. “Smoking is also a key contributor to drug addiction as studies have shown that 99% of drug addicts in detention centres admitted to being smokers during their teenage years. “Many steps were taken by the Ministry to address the smoking issues through the National Tobacco Control Strategic Plan 2015-2020, with the aim to develop a generation of Malaysians free from the smoking habit,” she said. At the carnival themed Oral Health Without Smoking, some 200 students from various schools visited the booths and exhibitions set up to educate visitors on the dangers of smoking and the importance of practising proper dental care. (Adapted from The Star, August 27, 2016) 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer (a) About ____ teenagers pick up the smoking habit every day. 50 to 60

The Birds, the Beasts and the Bat MANY years ago, the birds and the beasts declared war against each other. There was no possible solution to the war and so they went at it tooth and claw. It was a terrible battle. Many a hare and many a mouse died. Chickens and geese fell by the score. Those who had won the battle for the day, stopped to feast. And so this war waged on for many moons. All this time, the bat had not openly joined either group. He did not want to be caught on the losing side. So when the birds asked which side he was on, the bat quickly replied, “I have wings, I am on your side, of course.” And when the beasts asked who he supported, the bat responded, “Look at my sharp teeth and fur. I am on your side, of course.” In reality though, the bat did nothing to help either group. The truth of it was that he did little to help either group. In fact, he spent his time telling tales about the other. When the battle was over, and the birds and the beasts decided to put their differences aside and make peace, the character of the deceitful bat was discussed at the peace conference. The birds and beasts realised how many times the bat had changed sides and spread rumours. Since then the bat lives in fear of the beasts and the birds – hiding in dark towers and deserted ruins, flying out only in the night.

PROVERB MEANING EXAMPLE

: A man is known by the company he keeps : A person tends to associate with people who are like him or her. : Eventually, the bat lived alone and was friendless as he was dishonest and deceitful. If you think you can tell a man by the company he keeps, well this bat has no friends. What do you think that says about his character?

Gold honours netted by brave fishermen Read the newspaper article below and answer the questions that follow. Baca artikel akhbar di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan yang berikutnya. KUALA LUMPUR: After returning to shore from their usual morning fishing run, fishermen Saari Mohd Nor and Low Kok Seong would have breakfast and read the newspapers in their quiet village in Bagan, Pasir Penambang. They loved to read stories about heroic servicemen and women risking their lives to help people. What they never thought was doing such heroic deeds themselves, and for their bravery, they were chosen to receive the Star Golden Hearts award this year. On Feb 26, the pair – who have been fishing together for about five years – set out for the Malacca Straits at 5am as they do every morning. They ended up saving the lives of eight Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) officers whose CN235 transport aircraft had crash-landed on the swampy shores of Pasir Penambang in Kuala Selangor. The officers were part of a flypast rehearsal in Kuala Selangor when their twin-engine aircraft suffered engine failure 10 minutes into the flight. Soon after the emergency landing, the plane was engulfed in flames while the swampy soil began pulling the aircraft under the water. Four officers, including a co-pilot, were injured and were struggling to get out. Saari, 51, and Low, 40, who were 200m from the crash site, steered their boat towards the billowing smoke and pulled the eight officers to safety. Months later, the pair are mini-celebrities in their fishing village and many would still introduce them to friends as heroes. “Of course, we are very happy that people still remember what we did,” said Low. “But we just did what any Malaysian would have done in that situation. People must remember that.” (Adapted from The Star, Nov 29, 2016)

the fun page WE are going to have some fun with phrasal verbs. First, gather in groups of four. Listed below are several phrasal verbs. Your teacher is going to cut them out and give them to each group. Your group may get more than one phrasal verb depending on the time you have to play the game. While you need not cut out the list on your sheet, use it as a guide to guess the phrasal verb being used as we play this game of PICTIONARY. Each group (of four members) selects one student (take turns if you play more than one round). He comes up to the board and draws a picture related to the phrasal verb so that the others in class can guess the phrasal verb. The group that guesses the phrasal verb correctly scores a point for his team. To make the game more interesting, your teacher can set a time limit for each presentation.
