Association gives out CNY goodie bags to motorists and bus passengers THE Malaysian Consumers Protection Association (PPPM) gave out 2,000 goodie bags to motorists and bus passengers passing through the Sungai Besi toll in February this year. The goodie bags, which contained fruit juice packets and mandarin oranges, also included brochures on road safety awareness and caring for the environment as well as managing the high cost of living. The road safety campaign brochure covered topics such as saving petrol and driving safely, pedestrian safety and consequences of illegal racing. PPPM Federal Territories chairman Jeffrey Lau Thenk Teck said there were higher number of deaths by road accidents over the years. “We found that during the festive period, 18 to 19 deaths caused by road accidents occurred daily.” Although the 17-year-old association’s priority was to champion consumers’ right, issues related to health, environment and safety were also close to their hearts, said PPPM president Datuk Mohd Firdaus Abdullah. “We noticed that more and more deaths occur on the road, not only during Chinese New Year, but also during other major festivals,” said Mohd Firdaus. “Usually, these deaths are caused by technical problems and poorly maintained vehicles. “These unnecessary deaths will impact loved ones greatly, hence, we want to do our part to educate all drivers.” The campaign, which was held for the first time in Kuala Lumpur, was supported by the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK), Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Road Safety Department (JKJR). (Adapted from The Star, February 1, 2017) 1. Why were the brochures on road safety awareness included in the CNY goodie bags? ______________________________________________________________________ 2. the fun page BIKES, cars, buses – these mode of transportation make our lives easier. They help us to get from one place to another. But we must understand that with vehicles such as these on the road, there are also dangers. Road signs help lay out important traffic rules to save lives. You would have seen several such road signs as you ride your bicycle or sit in a car. Here are nine basic signs but they have been jumbled up! Find the correct match for the signs by cutting along the dotted lines, rearranging the pieces and pasting them on a sheet of A4 paper. Take turns to volunteer what you think these signs mean to the road user. ● How does each road sign warn the road user? ● Why is it important? ● What would happen if the road user does not follow this traffic rule?

The Crane and the Crab A long time ago, when the land was young, there was a peaceful lake that teemed with life. Many fish, crabs and frogs made this lake their home. One day, a beautiful crane swooped down and landed on this lake. He liked what he saw as the lake was full of fish, crabs and frogs. Now unknown to the other water creatures, this crane was a lazy fellow. He did not want to make any effort to catch his food so he thought of a crafty plan to catch his prey easily. Soon, he caught sight of a lonely crab. He called out to the crab in a sad voice. “Dear Crab,” said Crane, “How sorry I feel for you, your family and friends.” “Why is that, Crane?” asked Crab. “I have heard bad news from my fellow cranes who just flew by,” he continued. “The lakes down south are beginning to dry up. The dry spell will soon hit us here. I too am flying up North to avoid the heat. But I feel sorry for you and your family members and all the fish and frogs in this lake. You will all die when the lake dries up,” said Crane. “Oh no,” cried worried Crab, “I shall have to inform everyone in this lake immediately!’ “Don’t worry,” offered Crane in a soothing voice, “I shall help you all survive this drought. Fortunately, there is a lake not far from here. I can take you all there one by one so that you can continue to live safely,” said Crane. “How very kind of you,” replied Crab, “I shall inform everyone on the lake right away.” So Crab called for a meeting that day. He told everyone of the impending danger. Everyone’s worried faces turned to relief when they heard of Crane’s offer to help. Crane told everyone that he would first transport the fish, then the frogs and finally the crabs in the lake. He agreed that he would make two trips, once in the morning and another trip in the afternoon. Everyday, Crane would transport the fish from the lake. He looked happy to do so. For you see, Crane had been secretly eating the fish he was transporting to this new lake. He would carry them on his back and he would then eat them when he had flown some distance away from the lake. One day, Crab came up to Crane and said, “Dear Crane, a month has gone by. Please take me to this new lake today.” The Crane who had gotten bored of eating fish the past month decided that it was a good idea to change his diet a little. So he agreed to take Crab. Crab climbed onto Crane’s back and Crane flew off towards the sky. After a while, Crab asked Crane, “How far is this lake?” Crane gave a haughty laugh and said, “There is no lake you fool! I lied to all of you so that I may have hearty meals daily. Today is your turn to die!” Crab was frightened but he mustered all his courage and strength and squeezed Crane’s neck with his claws. As he did so, he said to Crane, “Take me home or I shall break you neck!” Crane had no choice but to do so. As Crane landed by the lake, Crab jumped as far away as he could. He told the remaining creatures about Crane’s evil plot. They learnt a valuable lesson that day about never trusting strangers!

Disability no bar for this avid mountaineer PETALING JAYA: Despite being born without legs, Azzrulkhan Hasrullah Matsah is determined to set new climbing records, one handprint at a time. The 25-year-old final year communications student at the International Islamic University of Malaysia in Gombak, scaled Mount Kinabalu last year to become the first disabled man to crawl up the highest peak in South-East Asia. This feat was recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records. Now, he has set another record as the first to climb the 2,058 steps of KL Tower on his hands. His feat was part of his training to conquer Mount Trusmadi in Sabah this month, and subsequently the Everest Base Camp in July. “When people ask me why I want to set records, I tell them that’s the wrong question. “Instead, the question should be ‘Why not?’,” said Azzrulkhan or Adam as he is affectionately known to his “Anak Gunung” team mates. Adam is an avid mountain climber who wishes to conquer all the mountains in the world. He first caught the climbing bug in 2014 and was further inspired to do so when a friend, who is also disabled, managed to traverse Broga Hill. Since then, he has conquered many hills and mountains in the country, including Gunung Bunga Buah in Pahang as well as Gasing Hill and Kutu Hill in Selangor. No peak is too high for the determined mountaineer. “If the moon has a peak that needs to be conquered, why not (conquer it)? The higher, the more extreme, the better,” he said. A spicy success despite disability IPOH: Double amputee Jenny Pong has big dreams and she is not letting her disability stop her from achieving them. The 51-year-old Pong wants her homemade Nyonya curry paste to reach the international market. For years, she has depended on her siblings to support her but now, she can be financially independent. Pong first experienced a loss of sensation in the lower part of her body when she was 18 after the stillbirth of her twin babies. Days after returning home, she felt weak and was diagnosed with post-natal viral infection and was admitted to the intensive care unit, where she slipped into a coma for two years. When she came out of the coma, she found out that not only had her husband left her, gangrene had set in on her legs. She decided to amputate them. Pong said she used to crawl around her house prior to getting a wheelchair. She cooks her curry paste while lying flat on her stomach on a wooden trolley, which she uses to move about. Pong said becoming self-sufficient and independent was the only way forward as seeking donations was not feasible in the long run. “How many times can I ask for donations? It is better for me to do something to sustain myself,” she said. Her message to those in the same situation as she is: “If I can do it, so can anyone else.” Questions 1. year 4 – stranger danger When you are out in public places, you come across many people. Some may have pleasant faces while others may look mean and angry. How do you tell who is dangerous and who is not? Not everyone you see is a nice person. That’s the first thing you have to know. Secondly, adults do not need help from a child! Sometimes, people pretend to tell you that they need help getting something from their car. They take you there and then steal you away from your parents. If someone asks for help, just say “No!” and get away as soon as you can. Tell a responsible adult about it. Never get close to a person’s car to look at something or to get something from the person, such as candy or a game. Where possible, always have a ‘buddy’ with you. Always walk home with someone after school. Work in pairs for this activity. Scan The Star for pictures or words of people you consider strangers, and people who are not. Give a reason for choosing each of them. Once everyone is done, have a sharing session with your classmates. Discuss the answers with your teacher. People I consider strangers
