Tears of joy spark success KUALA LUMPUR: Seeing tears of joy on his teacher’s face when he scored an A for Science two years ago is the driving force behind a student’s string of 7As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam. K. Phugeneswaran was so moved by his teacher’s reaction to his only A in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah exam that he harnessed it as his motivation to study hard. “From then on, I wanted to make all my teachers happy,” said the former SMK Seri Bintang Selatan student. But it wasn’t easy for the boy because there is no water and electricity in his house as his parents are too poor to provide that comfort. So the boy, the eldest of five children, studied and slept in the school canteen or the assembly area for two years. “My teacher Puan Raja Faziatul Hanim Raja Azie stayed after school hours to tutor me. “I want those who are poor to know that as long as you have the will to do well, you can do it,” he said, adding that he wants to become a lawyer. Raja Faziatul said Phugeneswaran was well-mannered and always came to class neatly dressed with his school shirt tucked in. “Even when he was bullied by the other kids, he smiled. He was never seen pitying himself despite his difficulties,” she said. Another teacher, Salina Abdul Manaf, said Phugeneswaran was the only student who went looking for all his teachers to thank them after he received his results last week. His story went viral on Facebook when teacher Zaireen Zainal Abiddin posted it and it was shared more than 7,000 times. (Adapted from The Star, March 8, 2016) 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer. a. What motivated K. Phugeneswaran to study hard for the SPM examination? Seeing tears of joy on his teacher’s face when he scored an A for Science in a previous exam. He wanted his story to go viral on Facebook. His teacher stayed after school hours to tutor him.

b. Who were the two teachers who commented about K. Phugeneswaran? Salina Abdul Manaf and Zaireen Zainal Abiddin Raja Faziatul Hanim Raja Azie and Zaireen Zainal Abiddin Raja Faziatul Hanim Raja Azie and Salina Abdul Manaf

2. How did K. Phugeneswaran study without water and electricity in his house? ____________________________________________________________________________ 3. What is K. Phugeneswaran’s message to those who are poor? ____________________________________________________________________________

Disabilities don’t hinder these pupils SHAH ALAM: Disabilities are not obstacles to achieving good academic results, as proven by several students who defied the odds to score a string of As in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination. Among them is wheelchair-bound Aliya Najihah Mohaji of SK Sri Tiram in Tanjung Karang, Kuala Selangor. Aliya Najihah, who suffers from a blood vessel disease, scored 4As and 2Bs. The disease caused weakness in her hands and slowed down her writing. Therefore, she was given an extra 15 minutes for each paper. Another special pupil who achieved excellent results was Wong Jun Zhe from SJK (C) Tun Tan Cheng Lock in Subang Jaya. Tall and lanky Jun Zhe, who suffers from Marfans Syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the body’s connective tissue, scored 5As, 2Bs and 1C. He gets 30 minutes extra for each paper since he is unable to write quickly. In Johor Baru, SKPK Princess Elizabeth pupil Han Jia Xuan, whose vision in her left eye is impaired, obtained 4As and 2Cs. Loh Yu Han from SJK (C) Chia Min in Kluang has impaired hearing since age six. He scored 1A, 3Bs and 4Cs. In Kuching, visually impaired Felic Bakar Muyang from SKPK (B) Kuching scored 4As and 2Bs. Hello Tishon, How are you today? I am so happy you wrote to me about what’s troubling you. You should have written to me earlier so that you need not suffer in silence. I too experienced the same thing. I did not know whom to turn to when I was bullied at school. Bullies do not understand the pain that they inflict on those they bully. Sometimes, they think it is a joke but it may cause serious harm physically and mentally. You must bring this to the attention of your school counsellor or discipline teacher. They have the experience to handle such situations. I am sure the matter will be dealt with fairly. Do not forget to inform your parents too. Your parents can work with your school administrators to settle the issue. You must be feeling angry deep inside. Talk to your closest friends about the matter. It made me feel better; I’m sure it will make you feel better too. Also, try not to be alone when you are at school. Bullies tend to hesitate picking on their victims when they are in the company of friends. I hope the bullies learn a lesson after your school counsellor or discipline teacher deals with the issue. Their parents should be called to school and be notified of their children’s behaviour. Meanwhile, don’t let your emotions get the better of you. Do take care and keep me informed of further development. Your friend, Kiron

Doraisamy gradually losing his eyesight with no one to look after him, Mohd Yusuf Rohani has devoted the past 16 years caring for him. They are neither related nor from the same cultural background but none of that matters to Mohd Yusuf, one of the winners of this year’s Star Golden Hearts Award. Now 47, Mohd Yusuf does his best to tend to a man 19 years his senior whom he affectionately calls D.O. Language has also never been a barrier between the two as Mohd Yusuf spent his primary school years in a Tamil school. Both have been communicating in Tamil since he met Doraisamy, who is now a double amputee, decades ago. “I trust Yusuf more than I would my own family,” says Doraisamy, now 66, who is wheelchair-bound after losing the lower part of both legs to diabetes. “He listens to me.” Doraisamy has six siblings, two of whom have passed away. But most of his remaining family members gradually stopped helping him. “They could not give me money for my medical expenses,” he says. Doraisamy, who is single, currently lives with his youngest sister and her husband at the Ladang Selabak estate where they are both employed. Mohd Yusuf visits him daily, bringing him what he needs, taking care of him and sending him to hospital for treatment. With their combined daily salary of about RM70, it is a struggle for Doraisamy’s sister and brotherin-law to care for him, so Mohd Yusuf shares what he can. abused for our entertainment

Vote with your feet and don’t support wildlife tourism activities that involve cruelty to animals. IF you can ride it, hug it or take a selfie with a wild animal, it is likely that the animal experienced some form of abuse. World Animal Protection estimates that at least 550,000 wild animals are suffering at the hands of irresponsible tourist attractions around the world. That is more than half a million animals being abused for our entertainment. According to a 2016 study by the University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, commissioned by World Animal Protection, three out of four wildlife tourist attractions involve animal abuse or conservation concerns. Some cruel wildlife entertainment activities include riding elephants, taking tiger selfies, holding sea turtles, dolphins performing, monkeys or elephants dancing, charming snakes and kissing cobras, and touring civet cat coffee plantations. A recent video I watched on the cruel side of elephant tourism comes to mind, where elephants are emotionally and mentally broken down so that humans can climb onto their backs. The video showed a number of struggling young elephants being

Cruel attraction:

an elephant carrying tourists at Lak lake in the central Vietnamese highland province of dak Lak. — aFP tied up with rope and beaten with bullhooks till they bleed. This process is called phajaan, directly translated as “the crush”, which is to “divorce the baby elephant from its spirit” or to “split the will” of the elephant. These baby elephants are often taken from their mothers at a young age and are typically kept tightly chained and isolated from other elephants. They are chained, deprived of food, water and sleep, abused to break their spirit and made to follow human commands. The video evidence of this cruel

practice is truly heartbreaking. It is sad that these animal attractions can also be found in Malaysia. Animal NGO Friends of the Orangutans claims that a 36-yearold Asian elephant named Lasah is currently kept under deplorable conditions on a Malaysian island. He was born in the wild and has spent over 30 years in several zoos. Friends of the Orangutans say that Lasah was forced to work at a logging camp, perform in several shows and commercials, and even starred in the 1999 film Anna and the King. Lasah was sent to this adventure

destination in March 2006 to provide rides for visitors, and recent investigations found him chained on all four legs. It is sad to see photos of a majestic creature like Lasah chained up at night, unable to move. I am not sure if he is even able to lie down. It is cruel and heart-wrenching. Friends of the Orangutans are now petitioning to retire Lasah and move him to the Kuala Gandah elephant sanctuary. This cruelty does not apply to just elephants. Similarly, tigers don’t pose for photos because they want to, monkeys or dolphins don’t dance because they want to, and sea turtles don’t want to be held for photos. I am not saying that all wildlife tourism activities involve cruelty. But often enough, the abuse happens behind the scenes or early in the animal’s life (like in the case of elephants). Judging by the number of positive reviews on TripAdvisor on a number of wildlife attractions, many people are still visiting these places, especially in the South-East Asian region. However, we must give these people the benefit of the doubt: per-

haps they just don’t know about the cruelty behind these wildlife activities. Admittedly, I have been on an elephant ride as a child. But if my family had known of the cruel treatment the elephant has to go through, we wouldn’t have even visited that elephant centre. Now, I have made it a personal rule of mine not to engage in these wildlife tourist traps, unless the facility acts as a legitimate sanctuary for the animal. I believe that animals belong in the wild, in their natural habitat. They don’t deserve to be chained or in cages for our entertainment. Governments should put an end to this unnecessary suffering and tour agencies should also stop promoting these cruel activities. But a big part of putting an end to these cruel wildlife attractions is for individuals to stop visiting these places. As a visitor, I much prefer seeing animals in the wild, where they belong, don’t you? Online reporter Victoria Brown’s Behind The Cage tackles the pressing issues of animal rights and environmental awareness. She can be reached at victoria@thestar.com.my.

We agree/disagree with the issue: Wildlife tourism activities that involve animal cruelty should not be supported. Our reasons are: 1. Animal cruelty is rampant in our country and we should raise awareness on it. 2. Wild animals belong in the wild. 3. Supporting it will encourage more to exploit animals for profit.
