grammar
Singular and plural nouns THE first topic when it comes to learning grammar is usually nouns. Nouns are the names of people, animals, places, objects and plants. To show whether there is one or more than one item, we use the singular noun and plural noun respectively. When changing a singular noun to a plural noun, the basic rule of thumb is to add -s at end of the word. While it is the case for most nouns, it does not apply for all. For example, the singular noun ending with -s, -x, -z, -ch and -sh, we add -es. As for the singular noun ending with -y (with the second last word a consonant), its plural form drops the -y and takes on -ies. Some singular nouns ending with -f or -fe, can simply be added with -s. Others replace the -f and -fe with -ves when forming the plural. Rules
Examples
Most nouns
Add -s to form the plural.
bear colour cave
Nouns ending with -s, -x, -z, -ch and -sh
Add -es to form the plural
box crash fox
Nouns ending with a consonant, then -y
Replaces -y with -ies to form the plural
penny berry
Nouns ending with -f or -fe
For some nouns ending with -fe and -f, we just add -s. For some other, we add -ves.
roof safe hoof knife
➯ bears ➯ colours ➯ caves ➯ boxes ➯ crashes ➯ foxes ➯ pennies ➯ berries ➯ roofs ➯ safes ➯ hooves ➯ knives
Exercise Match the singular nouns in box A to the plurals in box B correctly. Padankan kata nama tunggal dalam kotak A ke bentuk jamaknya di dalam kotak B dengan betul. A

One and many HERE’S a board game you can play in groups of four. Fold the die included on the right. Each member places their marker (you can pick a small item like an eraser or coin) at the starting point. The first player rolls the die and moves his marker according to the number shown. Using the table below, the player writes down the singular noun his marker lands on. He then has to write its plural noun correctly in the blank space next to it. The game continues with subsequent players until all markers have reached the finish point. Finally, check with your teacher - the person with the highest number of correct plural nouns wins!

Facial expressions THE expressions on people’s faces say a lot about how they feel. When angry, they may pout or frown. Likewise, if they are happy, their eyes light up and they grin from ear to ear. Here’s an activity you can do in groups of four. You will find a number of facial features drawn below. Cut each set out and keep them with you. Your teacher will read out a list of situations. Listen carefully. Next, construct how you feel about each situation and construct what you think this “face” of yours would look like as you respond to the situation. Take about 10 minutes to construct the facial expression, and share your answers in your group before your teacher moves on to the next situation. Don’t forget to tell your group members what each expression stands for! (Example: happy, depressed, sad, confused, etc.) Explain your reasons if you need to. Have fun! Eyebrows

The antidote ONCE upon a time, there lived a young lady in a remote village in China. Her name was Li Pin. Li Pin was courted by a young man whom she eventually married. After her marriage, Li Pin moved in to her husband’s home. There, she lived with her husband and her mother-in-law, whom she called Ah-Ma. Li Pin found Ah-Ma obnoxious and rude. She made Li Pin’s life miserable. Li Pin was so unhappy that she plotted to kill the old lady whom she had grown to hate. One day, Li Pin decided to act upon her decision. She went to the next village and met with the village doctor. “Good day, sir,“ said Li Pin, “I want to buy a slow-acting poison.” “Whatever is it for?” asked the doctor. “It is for my mother-in-law,” answered Li Pin honestly. “I cannot continue to live with her under the same roof. She makes my life a living hell,” said Li Pin as she continued to pour her heart out to the doctor. The doctor sat and listened attentively. When Li Pin finished her story, the doctor walked over to his medicine cabinet and made a concoction. He handed her a small bottle containing clear liquid. “Now listen very carefully, young lady,” said the doctor in a serious voice, “to avoid suspicion from the people around you, treat your mother-in-law very nicely – exactly as you would like to be treated. Then no one will suspect you.” A happy Li Pin hurried home and put her plan into motion the very same night. She slipped a drop of poison into the porridge she set aside for Ah-Ma. Li Pin was courteous and nice to Ah-Ma as she fed Ah-Ma her daily dose of poison in every meal. But a strange thing happened as this went on. The two ladies began to get along better each day. Soon, they had become the best of friends. Li Pin felt guilty and began to worry about Ah-Ma’s health. She hurried back to the doctor and told him that she now regretted poisoning her mother-in-law. “Please, sir,” said Li Pin. “May I have an antidote for the poison that you sold me two months ago?” “Whatever is it for?” asked the doctor. “Over the last two months, my mother-in-law and I have become the best of friends. I cannot bear to see her health deteriorate. I regret my actions. Please give me something to counteract the poison,” cried the young lady. The doctor replied, “My dear girl, I gave you only water in that bottle; the only poison was your attitude.”
PROVERB
Treat others as you would want them to treat you.
MEANING
Treat other people with the concern and kindness just as you would like them to show towards you.

WHEN he saw his son Dwayne in a daze, Mr. Low began to worry. His son was sitting on a swing, staring blankly at the sky. Mr. Low asked his wife, “What is wrong with our son? He doesn’t look like himself.” Mrs. Low replied, “He has been like this for the past two days - ever since we moved to this town for your new job.” “I think I’ll have a talk with him,” said Mr. Low, as he walked towards his son. He sat beside Dwayne. “What’s wrong, son? You look troubled. Are you facing any problems in your new school?” asked Mr. Low. “No, I don’t have any problems at school, Dad,” answered Dwayne. “Then why do you look so gloomy? You know you can always talk to me,” said Mr. Low. “I miss Dinesh, Laili and all my other friends in Puchong. I feel lonely here,” said Dwayne. “Ah, I see! I too had the same feeling. I miss my friends, especially Uncle Ravi,” said Mr. Low. “But you know what I did to overcome this feeling?” “What did you do, Dad?” asked Dwayne. “Well, I made new friends at my new work place. Now I have a couple of new friends I can talk to at the office. You should do that too. Make new friends around here and in school,” said Mr. Low. “Shall we go to the park this evening? I’m sure you can meet some new friends there.” Dwayne nodded, agreeing with his father’s suggestion. That evening, the Lows visited the park nearby. Exclamatory sentence WHAT is an exclamatory sentence? An exclamatory sentence refers to a sentence that is more forceful than a declarative sentence. Although both types of sentences sound almost the same, the exclamatory sentence is able to convey more excitement or emotion by using the exclamation mark (!) at the end of the sentence. We can use exclamatory sentences to show emotions like anger, surprise, happiness, frustration, love, joy and sorrow. Example: Anger Surprise Happiness Frustration Love Joy Sorrow

year 4 – stay healthy How often do you wash your hands? Do you wash them after you use the washroom? Do you wash your hands before and after meals? It may seem like an unnecessary and troublesome habit, but washing your hands properly will prevent you from falling sick. There are lots of germs out there, and germs can travel far and wide. Where are they hiding? In groups of four, cut out the picture of the palm print below. Scan The Star for nouns (things) that germs stick to. Your teacher will set a time limit. The group with the most number of nouns pasted on their sheet of A4 paper wins! (Two examples have already been done for you)
