Good Samaritan wants privacy Read the passage below and answer the questions. Baca petikan di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan. PETALING JAYA: Some good Samaritans prefer to be unsung heroes. This appears to be the case for Lee Hui Sen, who parted with RM44,500 deposit that was placed for an auctioned house in Subang 2 to help the occupants who are financially strapped. A lawyer representing Lee, when contacted by The Star, relayed Lee’s wish for privacy. “Instead of showering her with unwanted attention, Lee preferred that any appreciation intended for her be channelled to the family, who may be in need of assistance,” the lawyer said, thus revealing that Lee is a woman and not a man as earlier assumed. A visit to an office believed to be linked to Lee proved unfruitful. An employee declined to comment when asked whether Lee was the owner or had worked there. “She is no longer here,” she merely said. It was reported on Wednesday that Lee, after checking out the house and finding that the family was still living there, decided not to proceed with the purchase as she could not bear the thought of taking away the home from them. A representative of the bank involved in the financial dealings confirmed that the 10% down payment paid by Lee had been credited into the borrower’s loan. The couple, known only as S, 47, and his wife Nor, 42, live in that house with their 20-year-old daughter. S was declared a bankrupt in 2014 after defaulting on his mortgage loan. S and Nor had ventured into their own business which did not turn out well and had been behind on their mortgage payments. (Adapted from The Star, December 24, 2017) 1. Woodpecker Woodpecker, woodpecker Tapping at the tree Woodpecker, woodpecker Can’t you see? Woodpecker, woodpecker You can’t win You can knock all day But there’s no one in!
- Brenda Williams WOODPECKERS are birds that usually peck at the wood of trees for something to eat. Insects or their eggs which can be found under tree barks can become delicious woodpecker meals. Woodpeckers also peck at trees when they want to make a nest for their young or when they want to send a message to other woodpeckers. One way in which woodpeckers help the forest is by getting rid of insects that cause damage to healthy trees.

reading comprehension Read the passage below and answer the questions. Baca petikan di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan.
A ‘precious’ place on state border THERE are many theories as to how the name Broga came about. According to former village head Datuk Hoo Nit Sing, it was formerly known as Beroga. “There was tin ore here, hence it is ‘berharga’ (precious) in Malay. It then became Beroga and today it’s known as Broga. “Another story from the orang asli is that Broga is the name of a bird that could be found on top of the hill,” he said. The Kampung Baru Broga (Broga New Village) is located on the Negri Sembilan side of the Negri Sembilan-Selangor border. There are more than one thousand villagers and about 80% of them are Hakka. “While they were previously in agriculture, be it rubber tapping or growing vegetables, these are now their side business. “Some villagers have either become hawkers or work in construction,” said Hoo, adding that Broga was attracting domestic tourists. “Tour and travel companies also bring people here for a visit,” he said. The 147-year-old Sak Dato Temple is one of the must-see places. The temple’s name is connected to the neighbouring orang asli village, Hoo said. “It is said that there was an orang asli from the village named Aman. As he had many Chinese friends, he wanted a Chinese name. He took the surname “Shi” (meaning stone in Chinese) after a friend and called himself Shi Man. When he died, he became a deity, hence the name Sak Dato (pronounced as shi na du in Mandarin). “Another saying is that the temple is built among stones,” said Hoo, who is also the temple committee chairman. There are several pavilions and benches for visitors to rest at and various statues, such as the 12 Chinese zodiac signs, that make good photo opportunities. Hoo said, previously only devotees came to the temple to pray. These days, added features like the hanging bridge, giant Monkey God statue and a herb garden made it an interesting tourist stop. He said the statue, at approximately 21.95m, was the tallest he had ever seen. (Adapted from The Star, October 28, 2015) 1. Write “True” or “False” for each statement below. a. The dishonest bear ONCE upon a time, in a forest far away, there lived a lazy wolf who would do nothing but sing and howl every night. Only when he felt hungry would he search for food. He would steal the jackal’s dinner or the hyena’s catch. One day, the wolf made a terrible mistake and stole food from the king of the jungle, the lion. In his anger, the king gave chase as he wanted to kill the wolf. As the wolf ran around the forest, he saw a bear. He said, “Please save me! The king is chasing me. He will surely kill me. Can you hide me somewhere?” “Yes, why not?” said the bear. “Come to my cave. You can hide there as long as you want.” The wolf went and hid in the bear’s cave. A few moments later, the lion came and asked the bear, “Have you seen the wolf?” The bear replied, “No, I haven’t, Your Majesty.” But he signalled the lion to look in the cave. The lion did not understand the signal and went away. Soon, the wolf came out of the cave and started to walk away. “Won’t you thank me?” the bear asked. “What for?” the wolf said, “For lying to the lion or signalling him about me. You are not an honest friend at all.”
PROVERB MEANING
: There is no honour among thieves : Criminals have a code of ethics. They do not commit crimes against each other. In this case however, there is no honour among both these dishonest creatures as the bear turns on his friend, the wolf. : The gang member was disloyal to his members as he told the police where his group hid the stolen money. This showed that there was no honour among thieves.

Overcoming the odds to impart knowledge Read the passage below and answer the questions. Baca petikan di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalan. TEACHERS have one of the most influential jobs in the world. They play a big role in imparting knowledge and skills as well as shaping the character of their students. Disabled teachers often have bigger challenges and obstacles to overcome. Noriezza Syazwiezza Wee Abdullah, 31, from Wakaf Baru, Kelantan, was born with congenital cornea problems in both eyes. After two failed cornea transplant operations, she was diagnosed with glaucoma. Noriezza, who teaches accounting at SMK Taman Sea in Petaling Jaya, is now blind in one eye. As a student, Noriezza excelled in her studies. She scored 7As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and obtained a degree in Accounting Education. Initially, she wanted to be an accountant but her parents advised her to become a teacher instead. She heeded their advice and now feels blessed to have chosen teaching as a career. Noriezza said growing up was challenging but she could always rely on good friends for help. As a student, she would bring a telescope to class and use a magnifying glass to help her read. She still uses a magnifying glass to read and mark her students’ work. “I need it to read those with challenging handwriting,” said Noriezza with a smile. She said her students do not treat her any differently compared to other teachers. When StarMetro visited her at the school, Noriezza moved about without any assistance as she had familiarised herself with the environment. She advised others who are visually impaired to be independent. “When we do things by ourselves, we gain confidence,” she said. She encourages parents of special needs children to allow them to pursue their passion. “Our society has a negative view of those who do not conform. “My advice is to encourage them to develop to their fullest potential and allow them to follow their dreams,” she said. A study tour to remember TRAVELLING can be so much fun especially if you do not have to do anything. But what if you have to plan and organise a trip for a group? That was exactly what the students from Taylor’s University’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts had to do. Nine Malaysian and two Maldivian Diploma in Tourism Management students were tasked to organise and plan a tour package from start to end. Department of Tourism, Events and Recreation, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts lecturer Lee Wei Mei said the task was part of their fifth semester assignment. “Students had to propose and select a destination, plan the tour duration and departure date. “They also had to plan the itinerary and contact suppliers for quotations. This was followed by selecting the right tour operator, working within the given budget of RM1,400 per person and finally booking and making a contract with the supplier. “The students chose Hanoi, Vietnam, for the study tour over Cambodia, Philippines and Thailand. The destination was selected because of several factors including weather, budget, timing and popularity,’’ Lee said. “Hanoi is the fourth most visited destination in the region and the autumn season is a pleasant time to visit,’’ she added. During the tour, the students also took turns to play tour guide which contributed 3% to their examination marks. These students also had to observe local tour guide Da Minh Thiep, who preferred to be called Hiphop, at work and learn from him. (Adapted from The Star, December 9, 2016)

year 4 – tell me a story We are going to craft a story from random words! Here’s how we are going to do it. First, your teacher will break the class up into five major groups. Each pupil will go through his copy of The Star looking for the type of word assigned to his group. GROUPS 1 and 5: Look for pictures or words of nouns only GROUP 2: Look for adjectives only (preferably from headlines) GROUP 3: Look for verbs only (preferably from headlines) GROUP 4: Look for proper nouns only Cut out the words and hand them to the teacher. (Teacher, please place words in a small box or bag.) Once the task is completed, form new groups of four. Each person will pick one word from the box or bag. Then, the first person starts a story creatively within the group. He can only stop after he has used the word he picked. The next person continues the story and does likewise.
year 5 – rearranging stories Your teacher will select a story from The Star. She will cut up the sentences in the story. Next, she will hand these sentences to each group (that consists of four pupils). Your group’s task will be to construct the entire story correctly! Paste your sentences below. Once everyone is done, check answers by reading your stories aloud. (Note to teacher: Stories from the Other news & views section in The Star make for short, interesting stories. You may want to go through past copies to select a suitable one for this activity. Make copies of the story for reference.)
Give this story a suitable heading: ____________________________________________________________________
