More challenging to adopt older kids KUALA LUMPUR: When she first brought them home in 2013, housewife Halijah Johan spent six months trying to get her two new adopted daughters to speak to her. Aged nine and 10 at the time, Nurul Hajar and Nurul Huda had focused on surviving at their orphanage in Sungai Buloh and were distrustful of “aliens”, she said. “They wouldn’t hug me, they would back out. They would not even shake my hands. They looked at me like they didn’t like me. I was an alien to them. “Taking care of older adopted children is more challenging, because they have formed their own mindset. “But I couldn’t judge them. They had been alone in their hearts for many years,” said the 42-year-old who also adopted two newborn boys before this. The settling in process was a challenge, but now the mother of four adopted children said her Shah Alam household feels like a real family. “There were times I felt like giving up. I know of some friends who sent the children back after a few months. “But my husband supported me and told me not to give up,” she said during a ceremony to launch the first Malaysia Adoption Day at a shopping mall here. Also present were Halijah’s young adopted sons Muhammad Haziq, nine, and Muhammad Hilmi, six. OrphanCare Foundation chairman Tan Sri Faizah Mohd Tahir said couples were more interested in adopting newborns than children aged two to 16, and this made it a challenge for social workers to find them homes. (Adapted from The Star Nov 12, 2016) 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer. (a) Who were the “aliens” mentioned by Halijah Johan?

Volunteers repair homes of villagers affected by bad weather and floods JOHOR BARU: Freak storms and sudden winds two months ago left many residents of Taman Dahlia with broken roofs and flooded homes. Single mother Sarias Wuahab, 64, said that the storm had torn off her roof, which caused rainwater to enter and damage her mattresses and household appliances. “I had to spend more than RM3,000 to fix the roof and replace my furnishing,” said the senior citizen. She and other residents were all smiles when 20 volunteers from the Cure & Care Rehabilitation Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and youths from Kempas showed up at their homes to replace the roofs. The initiative was part of the Johor Future Home programme, a project by the state government to help repair the homes of the underprivileged. Retiree Leman Tahir, 65, said that it is tough whenever his ceiling leaks as he lives alone. “I have tried mending the roof myself, but the water still manages to find its way in,” he said, adding that he was thankful to receive help through the Johor Future Home programme. Kempas assemblyman Datuk Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Jumat, who launched the event, said that many of the roofs in the area were in bad shape. “Most of the residents in the area have never had their roofs changed or reinforced, so this is a good opportunity for us to help them,” he said. (Adapted from StarMetro, November 28, 2016) 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer. (a) Who were affected by the freak storms and sudden wind?

God helps those who help themselves BELOW are two fables by Aesop, a famous storyteller who is believed to have lived in ancient Greece hundreds of years ago. Fables are short stories that illustrate a particular moral and teach a lesson. Story 1: Hercules and the wagoner One day, a man who drove a wagon to deliver goods from one town to another, was driving his wagon along a country lane. It had rained the night before. The path was muddy when the wheels sank down deep into a groove. The wagoner, stupefied and aghast, stood looking at the wagon. He did nothing but pull at his hair and utter loud cries to the god Hercules. “Mighty Hercules,” he wailed, “come and help me. The wheels of my wagon are stuck in mud!” The great god Hercules, it is believed, appeared. He looked at the wagoner and said, “You lazy man. Put your shoulders to the wheels and goad on your bullocks. Never more pray to me for help until you have done your best to help yourself, or you will henceforth pray in vain.”
Story 2: The fisherman piping A fisherman who was skilled in music took his flute and his nets to the seashore. Standing on a projecting rock, he played several tunes in the hope that the fish, attracted by the melody of his music, would of their own accord, dance into his net, which he had placed below. All morning, the lazy fisherman played his flute as he sat on the rock. At last, having long waited in vain, he laid aside his flute. He pulled up his net to see an empty mesh. Then, he got into his fishing boat and rowed a mile out to sea. There, he cast his net into the sea, and made an excellent haul of fish. When he saw the fish leaping about in the net, he said: “O you most perverse creatures, when I piped you would not dance, but now that I have ceased you do so merrily.”

Proverb: Self-help is the best help Meaning: Self-reliant men do not depend upon others for doing their work. They work hard to acquire courage and strength of mind. Example: I did not fair well on my last test. I was hoping to do some group studying with my best friends but they were too busy during the holidays. Mother gave me a lecture and said that I ought not to depend on my friends as self-help is the best help.

Budding pint-sized writers HOW often can we call preschool children “authors”, having written and published their stories? Five-year-old Cier Kish Salazar Signo was one of them, with his story about a boy named Timmy who not only found a kite, but made a new friend in Timmy and the Kite. The two other winning stories were When I Grow Up... by five-year-old Eunice Audreyana Lionel Jimbau, who spoke about what she aspires to be when she grows up, while Little Angel Called Kimberly captures the life of six-year-old Kimberly Wong herself. All three children were given the opportunity to read out their stories to guests and fellow classmates at the launch of The Reading Vision Project 2016 at Sunway Putra Mall. They were among 12 children whose stories made it to the final round, but only theirs were chosen as winning entries. The Reading Vision Project 2016 is the brainchild of Smart Reader Worldwide co-founder and group executive director Datin Seri Dr. K. H. Wang, who wanted to cultivate the love for reading and writing among the younger generation. As this is a global mission, the published books will be shared with the Smart Reader centres in other countries, and vice versa. All three, Cier, Eunice and Kimberly, not only got their stories published, but also took home RM1,000 cash prize, a trophy, certificate, and token of appreciation. 1. Tick (✔) the correct answer. Fascinating fables IF you have been an ardent fan of Step Up, you’d probably know who Aesop is. Step Up features lots of fables from Aesop in its Story time section. Aesop was a master of telling morality tales based on animal characters. The tales use animals to describe characteristics: proud lions, busy bees, industrious ants and more. But not all lions are brave (as shown in the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), so this goes to show that we should not stereotype animals and people. But here is something fun you can do. If you could be an animal in one of Aesop’s fables, what animal would you be? Draw the animal you would take on in the space provided. Then, provide three reasons why you would be this animal. What are the similar traits you and this animal have? Example:

2. Snakes can also appear fierce and scary. When I am angry, my younger brother stays away from me as he says I look scary when my face turns red.

year 4 – helping hearts Do you know what a soup kitchen is? A soup kitchen is a place where free food is served to those who are homeless or destitute (those who do not have the basic necessities of life). Let’s work on a class project. Imagine that your class is assigned to handle one lunch meal for 50 people at a soup kitchen. Each group of four has been given RM80 to prepare one dish to serve at the lunch. In groups of four, go through a hypermarket advertisement in The Star looking for food items you can buy to prepare one dish that will be served to these 50 homeless people. First as a group, decide on the dish you wish to prepare. Then do you shopping (from the hypermarket advertisement). Stretch your Ringgit as much as possible. Remember you may need to buy some basic necessities such as cooking oil and salt too. What would your ingredients be and how much would you need? Take turns presenting your soup kitchen project. Your teacher will give you feedback on the practicality of your ‘project’. Example: Group: ……… will be preparing chicken soup with cabbage.
Ingredients needed:
Budget:
1. Four uncooked chicken
1. Cost of one chicken = RM8 Cost of four chickens = RM24
2. Five heads of cabbage
2. Cost of one head of cabbage = RM3 Cost of five heads of cabbage = RM15
3. A one-litre bottle of oil
3. Cost of a one-litre bottle of oil = RM7.50
4. A packet of salt
4. Cost of a packet of salt = RM2.00 Total = RM48.50 Are you within budget? Yes
year 5 – a grateful heart Here’s a fun activity you can do as a group. In teams of four, scan The Star for as many uncountable nouns as possible. They can be in the form of pictures or words. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A3 paper. Your teacher will set a time limit. The group with the highest number of uncountable nouns on their A3 sheet wins. (Hint: A good place to start will be the hypermarket/supermarket ads in The Star). Have fun!
