Student crowned harvest queen KOTA KINABALU: Student Sherry Anne Laujang of Penampang was crowned this year’s Unduk Ngadau or Harvest Queen in the penultimate event of state-level Kaamatan festivities. The 21-year-old Kampung Ramayah resident outshone 43 other contestants from around Sabah as well as the Klang Valley, Johor and Labuan to take the title. In second place was 23-year-old Claryssa Henry of Kudat while the third spot went to Fenny Ester Joslin, 21, of Sabah’s northernmost island of Banggi. They received their prizes from the wife of Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni. Earlier in the day, the ritual chanting of Kadazandusun priestesses in the age-old magavau or thanksgiving ceremony was among the events to kick off the harvest festival celebrations. The festivities at the Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang here started with the cutting of seven padi stalks. Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin performed the symbolic harvesting and later beat a gong seven times. Also present was Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also the Huguan Siou or Kadazandusun paramount leader. Pairin later read out the speech of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who said Sabah gives priority to cultural festivals like Kaamatan because they help foster unity and understanding among the state’s diverse communities. The celebrations included cultural performances, including the sumazau dance of the Kadazan of Penampang, the pokodinding of the Dusun Tindal and the sayau of the Dusun Liwan. Thousands thronged the Hongkod Koisaan grounds for the cultural extravaganza showcasing Sabah’s diverse ethnic communities. (Adapted from The Star, June 1, 2016) 1. reading comprehension Read the passage below and answer the questions. Baca petikan di bawah dan jawab soalan-soalannya.

Visitors now ensured they will see pandas at midday KUALA LUMPUR: Visitors eager to view the giant pandas at Zoo Negara during midday will not be disappointed as at least one of them will be seen frolicking in the open space of the panda enclosure. This is because the panda couple Xing Xing and Liang Liang, and their cub Nuan Nuan are being trained to have their meals and naps at different times. Malaysian Zoological Society deputy president Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana said visitors had complained that the pandas would be asleep when they visit them in the afternoon. “So with this new routine that started this month, at least one panda will be awake,” he said in an interview yesterday. Rosly said the mother Liang Liang and Nuan Nuan, however, would be fed at the same time. Zoology, hospital and veterinarian services, and Giant Panda Conservation Centre director Dr. Mat Naim Ramli said Nuan Nuan now weighs 53kg and is a healthy cub. “Both the mother and child get along well. “The mother used to be rather protective of Nuan Nuan before. As the cub is growing, the mother is less controlling, but keeps a watchful eye,” he said. Dr. Mat Naim also praised Liang Liang for being a good mother to Nuan Nuan, who is now 17 months old. Asked if Liang Liang and Xing Xing would be having another cub soon, Dr. Mat Naim said currently, the mother was busy bonding with Nuan Nuan. “Normally, after two years, there are chances for the parents to mate, but we cannot tell if it will be successful,” he said, adding that pandas mated only once a year. With the birth of Nuan Nuan, the parents set a world record for being the first pair to naturally produce within a short period of time while in captivity. Xing Xing and Liang Liang, who will turn 11 this August, arrived in Malaysia in 2014. Their arrival marked a 40-year celebration of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China. The pair from Chengdu, China, was loaned through the Giant Panda International Conservation Cooperation Agreement Programme. (Adapted from The Star, February 8, 2017) 1. Mulan YOU may have heard the story of Mulan or watched Disney’s animation of the movie by the same title. But do you know the true story of Hua Mulan? Mulan’s story was originally told in a ballad (like a poem or song). It is not known if Mulan existed in person but children in China learn of her heroic deeds in their literature text. A long time ago, in ancient China, there lived a maiden named Mulan. Her father was a retired general who served in many wars. Her father had returned home, tired, sick and frail from the last war he fought. Although he was old, he still taught Mulan to ride a horse and fight with a sword because he believed that everyone should know how to fight. One day, a war broke out and the government officials were sent to recruit soldiers. Men were needed for the army. Every family had to be represented by one male member in the emperor’s army. Mulan saw her father’s name on the list but knew that her father would not survive another war. Mulan’s brother was too young to take her father’s place, so Mulan, stole her father’s armour and enlisted in the army, without her father’s knowledge. Mulan had to disguise herself in her father’s armour as the army did not take ladies to replace the men. When Mulan’s father reported for duty with the government officials, they told him that they already had a “replacement” for the general. The general was confused that he had been let off. He had no idea that his daughter had gone in his place instead. Mulan kept her identity secret throughout the time she served in the war. No one suspected that Mulan was a lady. When the war was over, the emperor called on Mulan to reward her for her bravery. She was awarded a horse and a bagful of money. When Mulan returned home, there was a joyous celebration, Mulan’s brother was so excited to see her and immediately dressed in her armour while Mulan once again adorned herself in women’s clothes. That evening, they sat together to enjoy the sunset. Just then, two soldiers who had served with Mulan in the army, walked by. They too were on their way home. Mulan came forward to greet them. They could not believe their eyes. “You are not Mulan!” they said. “What have you done with our friend?” they demanded. Mulan then began to recount many memories of the war. They finally believed that this woman was indeed their fellow warrior. They spread Mulan’s story throughout China. The story inspired many women who now wanted to ride horses and fight with swords.

Pupils well versed in the benefits of composting WHEN SK Puchong Utama 2 pupils are done with recess at 10.15am, leftovers such as banana peel go into a designated bin while the milk boxes go into another. The school, located in Taman Puchong Utama, has been active in composting leftovers and food scraps under Subang Jaya Municipal Council’s (MPSJ) composting programme. The compost is used as fertiliser for the school’s garden, where various herbs and vegetables are grown. Under the Sekolah Sejahtera MPSJ Award Programme, the municipality also collects the food waste for its biomass centre in Bukit Puchong. The school’s project coordinator Farah A. Rahman is excited “as it will help the environment”. Farah, who has been a teacher for 28 years, said MPSJ’s green move to reduce waste at landfills was on the right track. “Children pick up the habit of sorting out food leftovers in school and communicate this message to their parents at home. Parents tell us that the children want to practise the same thing at home. “As a teacher who loves the environment and growing herbs, I believe the Sekolah Sejahtera programme will bring about a new generation that cares for the environment,” she said. Nur Dahiyah Kirana Mohd Nazri, 10, said it was good that the food scraps she dumped in the designated bin would be sent to the biomass centre to be made into plant fertiliser instead of rotting in the landfill. Her friend Divyasri Viknesvaran Krishansamy, also 10, said: “We are happy because we are saving our planet and there will be less amount of methane gas, which thins the ozone layer, released into the atmosphere.” Their schoolmate Sabryna Chen Ying En said she became more conscious of how much food she put on her plate in order not to waste it. All three girls are part of the school’s Eco Team and are serious about their task to ensure fellow pupils sort waste into the correct bins. (Adapted from The Star, August 19, 2017) 1. Simple future tense HERE’S a simple board game you can play in groups of four. Each person uses a token to represent himself. Take turns to throw the die. The first person to cross the finish line wins. The game challenges you to make sentences using the simple future tense. Tell your friends what you are going to do tomorrow based on the ‘symbol’ you land on. If your sentence is not constructed correctly, you miss a turn. Your group members will be the judge of that. (And if you are still unsure, check your grammar construction with your teacher.) Here’s the catch. If you fall on the same spot, you cannot repeat the same sentence as previously done so by a friend who landed there earlier. Be creative and come up with something else that uses the symbol because if you run out of ideas, you will miss a turn!

Snapshots from the past AUSTRALIAN Rodney Liddell shared some of his personal works during his visit to Malaysia in the 1970s. The 72-year-old took photographs of famous locations such as Central Market and Genting Highlands, showing how much the country had changed over the past 40 years. Liddell thinks Kuala Lumpur is a lot more congested these days, with more tall buildings dominating the city’s skyline compared to the 70s. As to why he visited Malaysia in the past, the Aussie explained that it was because of a girl. “We started out as pen pals by exchanging letters but eventually she invited me over to Malaysia. “She then introduced me to her family and I got to know a lot more about her. “We fell in love and started dating. Some time later, we got engaged,” he said. However, Liddell hinted that the girl’s mother had a hand in disrupting their wedding plans. “Sometimes things are not meant to be. We were supposed to get married but her mother was not too happy about it,” he said. He left in 1974 after parting ways with his pen pal. When asked how he got into photography, Liddell said his pen pal was the one who got him interested in the hobby. “Without her constantly nudging me to just do it, I would have never picked up photography.” He later embarked on a personal journey across the globe, capturing tons of photographs. “I like Malaysia for how its people can communicate so well with each other despite there being so many races and beliefs in a single country,” he concluded. Page 21 578, Jalan Menjalara, Kepong Baru, 63600 Selangor. 4th November 2017 Dear Simon, I hope you are in the pink of health. You wanted to know what the causes of pollution are. Let me tell you what I know about air pollution. Exhaust from factories is a major contributor to air pollution. The manufacturing industry releases large amounts of pollutant that depletes the quality of air. Fumes from vehicles cause pollution too. This is why we are encouraged to practise green habits like carpooling. We should use public transport too. Apart from that, chemical fumes from pesticide and spray cans too pollute the air. I hope you find the information useful. Regards, (Your name)

Year 4 – let’s celebrate Culture means: a way of life, ideas, customs and traditions of a group of people. How much do you know about the customs of people around the world? Look for a picture of a foreigner in your copy of The Star. Cut out his or her picture and paste it below. Then, try to answer the questions that follow. Once you have completed your work, gather in groups of four and do a show-and-tell about the person you have written about. Discuss and exchange ideas about each other’s pictures. Add comments and build up a profile of each person’s picture. Some of you may have travelled overseas and may know a little more about such a person’s culture. Share answers.

year 6 – SuperlativeS 1. Fold the 12-page tabloid into half.

PART 1: Let’s play a game using superlatives! It involves a scavenger hunt from the newspaper. Work in groups of three. With The Star newspaper, look for items (words or pictures) suitable for the superlatives below. Be prepared to defend your answers using logic. Cut your answers out and paste them either on the template below or on a sheet of paper. Team name: _______________________________________ The biggest

The smallest

The coldest

The most interesting

The highest

The most breakable

The greenest

The heaviest

The sharpest

The tallest

The scariest

The least expensive

2. Cut on the dotted line indicated on the page.

3. Once you have cut it, you can staple the pages near the folded side.

4. You now have a small and flexible note book. PART 2: When you are done, get together with another group and compare answers. If the other group members agree with your group’s answer to every superlative, they will award a point for each correct answer. You will do likewise for their scavenger hunt sheet. You may justify your choice of answers as a group when you teacher moderates the final count for all groups in the class. How many groups had similar items on their scavenger hunt sheets?
