As we hear the story of the call of the first disciples, make us ready to follow Jesus on whatever path He leads us. Cast aside our fears and doubts, and teach us to trust wholly in you. RESTORATION

The worship of the living God invites our response. Those who wish to profess faith in Christ and/or to unite with the church are invited to come forward and share your decision.

+Litany of Consecration and Offertory Prayer Jesus, you have called us. “Follow me,” you said, “Repent, for heaven is near.” We want to follow you. Culture is also calling us. The world wants its way with us, Offering us success, power, revenge, comfort, prestige, Usually at someone else’s expense. We’ll leave it all behind And fish for people instead. For all the ways we are complicit in the world’s schemes, Forgive us, Lord. For all the ways we choose false peace, Forgive us, Lord.

David Fuller (8:30) Ron Whited (11:00)

For all the ways we make ourselves blind, Forgive us, Lord. We want to follow you with everything we are With everything we have: Every footstep, Every quiet breath, Every act of peaceful resistance, Every careful word, Every healing touch, Every helpful offering. Strengthen us now, Lord Jesus, to do as you do: To proclaim good news to the poor, To heal every sickness and cure every disease, (Matt 4:23) To set captives free. March 2018 Monthly A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON Giving Up This week I’m studying Jesus’ call of the brothers Zebedee, James and John. We often think of these men as poor fisherman, but in their call story, they leave their father and the hired men in their boat to follow Jesus. This simple line lets us know that they were not the hired men. They hired the men. This was their father’s boat, their family boat. They may not have been wealthy, but they did have a family fishing business. It had probably been a means of support for their family for generations. The business belonged to their dad. One day, if they stayed with it, it would belong to them, to their children, eventually to their children’s children. This business was significant to their family, which means it was a significant thing to give up. And that’s just what they did. They gave it up as a way of giving themselves to God. During Lent we often give things up. We fast, not only from certain foods, but from certain activities either because we believe the act of fasting will better prepare us for Easter or because the thing we’re fasting from sometimes hinders our commitment to Christ-likeness. We give things up in order to give ourselves to God. Does it work? To some degree. God is at work within us, so anytime we work with God we can trust in some measure of progress. The measure we give will be the measure we get, so says the Teacher. (Luke 6:38) And that’s just what I’m wondering about today. The sermon this week will likely say something about John the ambitious and aggressive becoming John the beloved, Apostle of love. That didn’t happen the moment he and his brother stepped out of their father’s boat. For them, giving up their livelihood was just the beginning. The cost of their discipleship would be much more significant. Eventually, it would take everything. Their vocation, their security, their purpose; all they ever knew. This would be replaced with vocation, security, purpose and an uncommon, ever-growing depth of new, sacred knowing. They gave themselves up to God, and slowly, God gave them their true selves. There’s something significant you’re hanging onto. Or perhaps it’s hanging onto you. Its grip is tighter than chocolate, coffee or social media. It’s wound up into your very being. An ambition or an idea? A perspective or a prejudice? An expectation or a deep-rooted sense of entitlement? Or perhaps something else. Something significant. What is it the Spirit of God is calling you to give up now so that you can become more of your true self in Christ?

CHILDREN VBS 2018 IS COMING! ROLLING RIVER RAMPAGE—Experience the ride of a lifetime with God! July 9-13, 2018 As you are making decisions about your summer vacation and how your family will be spending these days, don’t forget to mark your calendars for our VBS week! July 9-13 will be a week packed with raft riders who will discover that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise. We want the kiddos to know they can trust God to be with them through anything. There are dozens of opportunities for you to engage in during that week; everything from “behind the scenes” preparations, creating décor with a team, being a guide for a small group of rafters as they meander through the “white waters” of adventure, teaching music or Bible Study, working with crafts or recreation, preparing snacks, punching and stapling, praying for the week… and the list just goes on and on! Begin praying now for guidance about your role with us this summer. We would love to have a “boat-load” of volunteers working alongside us. Look around your neighborhood and find children to invite. Commit this verse to memory as you think about our week: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” Isaiah 43:2 MOPS AT NIGHT MOPS@2BC is bringing back MOPS At Night! If you or a friend is interested in joining a MOPS group that meets in the evenings, please email us at mops2bc@gmail.com. MOPS is open to all moms with kids ages 0 through Kindergarten. We will be getting a small group together to talk about details and would love your input!

MUSIC NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC CHAMBER SINGERS Please Help Us Extend Hospitality! The prestigious New England Conservatory of Music Chamber Singers will be in our area in mid-March to

rehearse and perform with the William Jewell College Concert Choir. These fine collegiate singers need housing for three nights: March 15, 16, and 17. Our Sanctuary Choir has committed most of the houses needed, but we are still in search of 4-5 homes. Host families would need to provide breakfast for those three mornings and transportation to and from Second Baptist each morning and evening. We have drivers who could help with transportation if necessary. Would you help us extend some Midwest hospitality to these college students? They mainly need a place to sleep and some breakfast! Please contact Amy Duncan at 816-868-1156 or amyduncan@marykay.com if you can offer your home or if you have questions. IT'S A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
