If you are a first-time guest, we invite you to complete a guest card from a pew pocket or the Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Your information is private and will not be used for any other purpose than to keep you informed about 2BC. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid. Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), Our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
Take a moment to prepare your heart for worship “Lord have mercy!” — a phrase we often hear or say. Indeed, the phrase is so common, that the shock might have worn off. But God’s mercy is shocking! The Creator of all that is, grants mercy when God could rightfully condemn or punish. God’s mercy is the ultimate gift and show of love to us. When we deserve the worst and are the most unlovable, mercy tells us differently. Do we realize this gift? And do we know how to respond? —Katie Barrett Todd, from this week’s d365.org devotional
Children’s worship bags, filled with books and activities, are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there.
In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code. We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

October 2017 Monthly A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON World Communion. Christians across the globe celebrate this every year on the first Sunday in October. Whether in our sanctuary or with others in downtown Liberty, our celebration has largely been contained by morning worship as we receive symbols of Christ’s body and blood from the Lord’s table. This is good, though this year I’m wondering if this Sunday might serve as an October call to action, one shaped by the meanings of World Communion. Communion in our context is first and foremost Eucharist. When you hear this word, you may simply think of it as another Christian tradition’s designation for the Lord’s Supper. It is, but this name contains within it a call to action we ought to heed. It comes from the Greek word used in the telling of the Last Supper: “The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks (εὐχαριστήσας), he broke it, and said, "This is my body…” The word Eucharist literally means thanksgiving. I know it’s only October, but perhaps this year we shouldn’t wait for the turkey to prompt our practice of gratitude. We’re learning, after all, that gratefulness is key to cultivating joy. A “communion” is also an intimate fellowship. People sometimes talk about communing with nature. We don’t often refer to a meaningful meal with family or great friends as “communing” with one another, but the reference works. (Hey kids – come to the table – it’s time to commune!) Beyond that, a communion can also be a group that experiences an ongoing connection because of what they hold in common. As a church and as a Church, (little c and big C) we have this sacred inheritance. We are mysteriously interconnected to one another at a local and global level by the power of the Holy Spirit. What might it mean for us to practice that aspect of World Communion this month? Perhaps it’s time to read stories of suffering Christian brothers and sisters from places like Sudan. This may be the perfect month to share a meal with people whose ethnic or economic reality offers a different worldview than your own. We may want to spend this month attempting to be completely open to others, no matter how difficult that might be. At Second Baptist, we continue to celebrate our recent decision to make our church membership as open as our communion table. What if our hearts could open up a bit more too? It seems to me our hearts can always stand to open up a bit more. What might that look like for you? Finally, World Communion is about our common commitment to the Good News. Paul writes “for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26) Christians all over our world are connected because we have been swept up into this Holy Communion with God and others by the saving, redeeming, unifying, life-giving power of Jesus Christ. That’s not just something worth celebrating, that’s worth sharing. Who might you invite into Communion this month? With Thanksgiving,
Jason Edwards Senior Pastor

Email me at cmcneill@2bcliberty.org. Established groups can also choose this as a curriculum choice. From the Work of the People comes a new film series. Covenantal Restoration: A 12-session film series on faith and race. Racism and oppression have a long and painful past and present, it is an open, aching human wound that reflects a fracture in our relationship with God. Understanding how it was promoted and is still alive and acting out in the construct of our beliefs and systems and structures is the beginning of caring for this wound. In this series on faith and race, we pray God would bring you hope, renew your mind, enliven your spirit, and gift you with the virtues of the Divine’s own heart. May God strengthen your stand, inspire your movement towards God’s dream for humanity, and increase Kingdom square footage with each step you make in Love.

SECOND SESSIONS Session II September 27 – October 25 Bible study option: Deuteronomy led by Wil Mellone. “A lost treasure for large segments of the modern world, the book of Deuteronomy powerfully repays contemporary readers’ attention. It represents Scripture pulsing with immediacy, offering gripping discourses that yank readers out of the doldrums and back to Mount Horeb and an encounter with divine Word issuing forth from blazing fire.” (Reading Deuteronomy, A Literary and Theological Commentary, Stephen L. Cook: Smyth & Helwys) There is an intimacy with God found in Deuteronomy that stirs a deep longing for God and person-centered community. Wil is a lay student of the Old Testament and this book is among his favorites. Don’t miss his insights and bring your own! Room 304-305. Spiritual Growth option: Anonymous by Alicia Chole led by Jacque Stouffer. Remember our Holy Week Lunch speaker earlier this year? This is her next book that she is currently touring and teaching internationally. Amazon describes this book in this way: “We all experience times of hiddenness, when our potential is unseen and our abilities unapplauded. This book redeems those times by reminding us that though we often want to rush through these anonymous seasons of the soul, they hold enormous power to cultivate character traits that cannot be developed any other way!” Jacque is a returning Second Sessions leader out of popular demand! Room 303. Spiritual and emotional health option: Boundaries in Marriage by Cloud & Townsend led by Brenda Burris Chouris. We continue the Boundaries series. “Two lives becoming one: that’s the marriage ideal. But maybe you’ve discovered that it’s easier said than done. That’s why boundaries—the ways we define and maintain our sense of individuality, freedom, and personal integrity—are so important. And it’s why the principles described in Boundaries in Marriage are essential if you want your marriage to flourish.” Brenda is a licensed counselor and has a practice out of her church in Kearney, MO. She has a ministry and public education background which enhance what she brings to her care for others through her practice. Oak Room.
Service option: Mike will line up some service needs of some in our congregation or their neighbors who need assistance with small tasks in their homes. Meet in Old Library.
