siskind

Aaron Siskind was an american photographer and was involved widely on the abstract expressionist movement. Siskind’s work focuses on the details of nature and architecture. He presents them as flat surfaces to create a new image out of them, which he claims stands independent of the original subject. Early in his career Siskind was a member of the New york photo leagure, working with the group he produced several significant socially conscious series of images in the 1930’s.

Siskind found emotional joy and tensions in the process of discovering subjects and photographing them in such a way as to emphasize his reading of the world as essentiually abstract, a series of echoing forms, lines and textures. I have decided to look at the work of Aaron Siskind because I think that his work is very interesting and links in well with the theme that I am looking at of textures and patterns. I have started to interpret some of his photographs, for example the lines that have been painted on the road I decided to take a very similar photograph to that. I did this because I think that he takes excellent photographs of up close textures that not everyone would think to be nice to look at. I also like how he has put alot of his work into black and white, I think that this emphasises certain areas and allows you to see both the blacks and the whites in the photograph, and certain areas are highlightedwhich is were the focus point of the image is bound to be. I think that Siskind has photographed a very interesting set of textures and surfaces, and ones that you wouldnt focus upon on everyday life. For example the first photograph on the left is paper and graffiti that has partly been ripped off of a wall. I think that this is a really interesting texture to look at because it is messy and ragged but there are many different areas to look at, and I think that ripping it slightly makes it look much more interesting. My favourite photograph of Aaron Siskinds is probably the graffiti on the wall, this is because I think that it is such a simply photograph but it is made to look so interesting. I also like how it has been put in black and white as I think that it looks much more interesting, As it is a close up of the wall you can see all of the different textures and markings on the wall, which again makes the photograph look much more interesting, I plan on looking at Aaron Siskinds work in more depth and beginning to do more interpretations of it. The one interpretation that I have done of his work is in my texture and patterns work and was the photograph that I took of the lines painted on the floor. I found Siskind’s good and effective because aswell as just being able to see the line that has been painted onto the ground, you are able to see the actual texture of the floor and were all of the cracks are and the dents- which makes the piece look much more interesting by just being able to see these small elements.

LAYOUTS MAGAZINE

I have chosen these magazine layouts because I find them all interesting too look at, and I think that they make the photographs and the text look very professional. I also like some of the bright colours that some of them have used, for example the bright yellow colour. I think that this was an effective colour to use because it stands out very well but does not look messy. The advantage with a colour standing out is that the viewer will be drawn to that page so they will want to read it and see what is on it. I also like how some of the text has been put in a large font and has been filled with a picture- and think that this is interesting and different and makes the page overall look much better.

I think that finding these magazine layouts is going to help me out alot with making my photography magazine. This is because I will be able to take inspiration from what I see and apply it onto my own work and it will help my work to be laid out professionaly and look effective. I will experiment with using different layouts in my work and use the ones which I think look the most effective. I will also experiment with using different fonts on my work, and different sizes of that font. I think that a large font size for the title is interesting with small text around it. This is because I think that it dosent look like too much text has been included in the page so it dosent look messy, because it has been seperated by a large fonted title.

STEPHEN GILL

The photographs in this series were made in Brighton and Hove during 2010. They feature objects and creatures that Stephen Gill scooped up from the local surroundings and introduced into the body of my camera. Stephen Gill is a photographer that was born in 1971 in Bristol, he was taught out to produce photographs in his own dark room that he had at the house he grew up in by his father when he was a child. He used a magnifying glass to concentrate the light onto the image to etch markings directly onto the image.

Stephen Gill became interested in photography in his early childhood, thanks to his father and interest in insects and initial obsession with collecting bits of pond life to inspect under his microscope. Stephen’s photographs are held in various private and public collections and have also been exhibited at many international galliers and museums including Londons National portrait gallery.

I think that Stephen Gills work is very interesting to look at because of the use of all the different colours and how some areas look much brighter than others. I also find it interesting how he has taken a photograph of a person or a landscape and then has scanned images over the top of that. I think that this is really interesting because it is very different to alot of other photographers work, and it makes the images look more interesting to look at as a whole. If the objects over the top of the original photograph were not added then they would look simple and boring, but my simply scanning objects over the top of a photograph much more is added to it. I also like the use of colour in Gill’s work, this is because he has used a variety of bright colours that stand out well and they all go together well.

TEXTURES

AND and surfaces SURFACES

DIFFERENT ES THAT

I

T E X T U R E S AND SURFACHAVE FOUND IN MY ENVIRONMENT

I have photographed a variety of different textures and surfaces that I found in the environment that I was located in. I have photographed different objects such as the sole of my shoe- I thought that this was interesting to photograph because you could see a different pattern on the sole of the shoe and when I edited it on camera raw it made it look even more interesting because it highlighted certain areas. I also photographed objects such as paint on a board, I think that this looked ver y interesting because it showed a wide variety of different colours and because they look messy it looks good with the theme of textures.

I have photographed a variety of differ ings that were near me. The first one I found, I decided to photograph this interesting texture. The second photo has been made to look like a much m ing camera raw. This is because I edit that this looks very effective becaue it and where the lighter and darker are tograph was a brick wall, again I thin interesting after it has been edited. Th white, I increased the contrast so it all the lighter areas which I think was ve photograph was somebodys hair close because you are able to see it close up of hair going in other directions. I ed to put it in black and white because I the piece of hair better and made the

rent objects here that I found in the surrounde on the left was of a spray paint board which s becuase I thought that it looked like a very ograph that I took was of bark on a tree. This more interesting texture after it was edited usted it so that it was in black and white, I think allows you to see the details of the bark more, eas are. Another object that I decided to phonk that this has been made to look much more This is becuase I again edited it into black and lows you to see the darker areas and highlights ery effective. The next object that I decided to e up. I think that this is an interesting texture and can see the split ends and different pieces dited this picture on camera raw and decided thought that it allowed you to see the shape of photograph look more interesting as a whole.

TEXTURES AND SURFACES

I have photographed a variety of simple objects here that I thought had an interesting texture of surface. The image to the left is a shed and had a scribble in some sort of white pen which I thought made it look interesting. Even though it is such a small marking I think that it makes the shed overall look much more interesting because it adds to the surface of it. I decided to put this photograph into black and white because I thought that it made it better to look at because in enabled you to see all of the markings clearer, as there is also mud on the bottom of this shed. Black and White enhanced the darker areas so it allowed you to see where the lighter areas are in the picture. To the left I have photographed the sole of my shoe and also the toe of it. I think that this is a very interesting texture to look at up close and it photographed very well. This is because you cna see some small pattern which you would normally notice, but up close it has been made to look very interesting. Again I think editing these photographs into black and white was effective because it allows you to see the lighter areas of the photographs and the darker areas in more detail, and more clearer. I have begun to look at the work of Aaron Siskind and I have tried to interpret some of his work in my texture and surface photographs, that is why I have decided to put many of the photographs in black and white because I think that it makes them alot more interesting to look at.

I decided to photograph these because I thought that they looked very interesting. This photograph was taken of a shed that is outside in the school that I go to. There are many scratches and words that have been put onto the shed and I think that that makes it look inetresting and different and looks good with the theme of surfaces and textures.

There is also dust on this shed and words and different lines have been marked onto the shed. I then edited these photographs using camera raw, I think that camera raw made the photographs look much more interesting because it made certain areas lighter and certain areas darker which enables you to see the markings more clearly.

I based this photograph on the photographers work Aaron Siskind. I found his work very inte es that I have been looking at. I edited the photograph on camera raw and then used four of very effective because it links in well with the theme of surfaces because the lines on the ro

eresting to look at and I think that it links in well with the theme of textures and surfacthe same image, but rotated them so that it looks like a mirror effect. I think that this was oad that I have photographed join up together well, and this creates an interesting surface.

TEXTURES PLACED ON ORIGINAL TEXTURES

In this work I have taken a photograph that I took of a surface which was the road, and a white line painted on the road. I then edited and printed out that photograph. After I printed out the photograph I cut it up into different sections and then went back to the place that I photographed it at the beginning. I placed the photograph that I had cut up onto the ground and then photographed it again. I think that this looks effective because close up you can see the real texture of the floor and it looks very interesting. I then placed the photograph that I had cut up in different places on the floor so it was muddled around, I then photographed this. I think that this was effective because it shows the picture broken down, and it some areas it is more zoomed in, whereas in other areas it is a photograph taken from further away so you are able to see all of the different parts of the cut up photograph.

E V A L U A T I ON I think that the work explores the topic very successfully- this is because you can tell that the aim of the photographs that I took was patterns and surfaces, because that is what they are all of, and that was the main focus of why I took these photographs. I think that this work could be taken further by making manual edits, taking more photographs of patterns and surfaces, and also scanning more objects which have a nice pattern or surface. I think that my work links in well with the artist that I studied Aaron Siskind, this is because I took inspiration from his work so that I could get ideas when producing my own. I have taken risks with ideas because I have photographed certain objects or surfaces which look quite boring, but once edited they look much more interesting to look at because you are really able to see there surface and pattern. I understand about this topic now that everything even a boring simple object can havea an interesting surface, and also by editing it into black and white it makes it much more effective to look at.

For this topic which is based around textures and patterns I have created a variety of different pages were I have taken a variety of different pictures of different textures and patterns that I have photographed, or scanned. The techniques that I used in the production of my work were using camera raw to edit the photographs that I took. I also rotated some of the images once I had transported them onto indesign so it looked like they had been mirrored. I also scanned some patterns and materials which I found interesting to look at. The ideas that I explored were photographing textures and patterns that I found interesting and editing them into black and white on camera raw. I think that black and white looks effective because it draws your attention to some of the darker and lighter aspects so you know what the main focus is of the image. Ideas that I didnt carry on with were with some of the items that I scanned, I decided not to use all of these because I didnt think that they were effective enough to use.

1. Scratching into photos using compass, nail to create textures, mood, atmosphere.

I think that this technique is effective and it was a good technique to show as part of my work. I used photographs which I have done in a number of different shoots and I think by scratching into them it adds alot of effect and emotion. It also adds alot of texture and makes the images more interesting because they have been marked and you would wonder why that has happened and what link it has to the photographs. I think that this technique would be a good one to experiment with and if you are doing a photoshoot which includes an emotion such as anger or stress this could portray that well.

Scratching into photos using compass, nail to create textures, mood, atmosphere.

I think that this is a very effective technique because it can combine more than one texture and picture together. I think it was effetive to use a black and white image adn cut out sections and use a coloured background because it looks interesting and you are drawn to look at it. Also i think it looks good if you combine text with a picture- on the one on the right i have cut out sections and placed text so you are able to see them through the gaps. I decided to try out this technique because I may like to use it later on in my work and think it links in well with the photoshoots i have done so far.

Cutting out sections of photos and replacing with photographs

Working in Black and white sise areas.

I think that this is one of the most effective manual edits that I have completed. I think thatit stands out well because there is not too much going on because black&white and coloured paint is being used. I think this is very effective because the coloured paint that has been put over the black&white photograph really makes the photo stand out and emphasises areas. You could use this technique when you are dealing with photoshoots that include emotion and the variety of colours could portay hapiness or excitement.

I decided to use this technique because I like the mix between photographs and text and think that it is a very effective combiniation. I plan on taking this technqique further and experimenting with using it on more photgrapghs that I take. It allows you to have more of an understanding of the photo because all of the words that are written on the photo have some sort of link with what is going on, whether it is litral or something to do with the emotions.

COMBINED BLENDED LAYERS ON PHOTOSHOP TO SHOW DEPTH, SCALE AND FANTASY WORLDS.

I have blended different photographs together here using photoshop. these are the photos that i took during my summer photoshoot based upon the theme ‘if this is art’, and the artist sophie calle. I have experimented with blending layers to see what techniques look good and effective. I did this technique on photoshop and put the photographs ontop of eachother and then changed the blending opacity so that you are able to see both of the photographs and an effect like this is created. this shows my skills on photoshop and proves that I am able to use a number of different techniques on a number of different programmes.

PINHOLE CAMERA “A pinhole camera, a variation of Camera obscura, is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole – effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.

PINHOLE CAMERA PINHOLE CAMERA

To take this pinhole photographs we used a camera that we created ourselves. We used a tin can and then cut off the top of it, we then made a lid for the can using tape and card which we were able to slip off the top of the can. We made a hole in the can using a needle so it was tiny, and made sure that the lid was able to cover the hole once we pulled it down. We then put photographic paper inside the tin making sure the shiny side was facing the hole. we then went outside and lifted the lid up for around 12-20 seconds, making sure that the tin can camera was kept very still. after the time was up we would put the lid down immediately covering the hole. We then bought the tin camera back inside and went into the dark room. Once we were in the dark room we took the photographic paper out of the tin and placed it into the chemicals that are in the dark room, which helps to develop them. developer, stop, fixer- are the chemicals that we used in the dark room, and we placed the photographic paper in these chemicals in that exact order. we then left the photographs to dry and later scanned them so that they were on our computers. we then went onto editing them further on photoshop. I placed colour overlays ontop of them so that the photograph looked different, and different areas were highlighted depending on what colour was chosen. i also inverted one of my pictures which i think looked effective because it allowed certain areas to be highlighter and stand out more.

Rachel Sokal Her work is all about the light that is constantly changing in the physical world. she tweaks these reactions and catches them, she does this by using her range of delicate and labout intensive photographic techniques. Rachel sokals work however is more and deep and personal then just leaving a leave and a photograph in the sun, it is looking at a more environmental issue. she explores issues of species survival in changing climates and both the power of solar energy and the damaging effect of UV light on living cells. She runs a number of workshops and has many exhibitions running. The workshops that she runs includes; cyanotype printing, pinhole, photo processes and many other techniques.

I have experimented here with chlorophyll prints and have used my own photograph to experiment with this. i used a photograph that i took with my summer photohshoot and then put a leaf behind the photo, put both under glass and left it by the window so that the sunlight could reach it. “the prints are bleached by sunlight directly onto the surface of leaves using a positive. The resulting images are stunningly delicate and beautiful, ranging from haunting silhouettes to crisp definition. An aritst that focuses highly upon the work of using chlorophyll prints, and then printing them on to leaves is rachel sokal.

What does the word ‘Photography’ mean?

i think that the word photography means capturing a moment in time that you thought looked interesting and exciting, or setting up a scene which you think would look good in the frame of a camera. i think that photography is all about what or who you are taking a photograph of, the lighting, the environment, the apeture and many other different aspects of the camera. a definition that has been given of photography is ‘the art or practice of taking and processing photographs’, i think that this is an interesting definition because alot in photography you are changing and progressing your photographs to make them betterand that is what this is talking about. “ The most obvious of them has to do with the changes brought about the advent of digital photography and the apparent obsolesence of analong photography” - Marco Breuer “Conceptual artists have gone on to ways that challenge and unpend its artistic, intellectual and technical concepts and aesthetics and broadened the notion of what a photograph could be in art” - Marco Breuer I think that photography can be all about different aspects including people photography, object, still life and environments. I think that it is all about what the individual holding the camera finds interesting, and how something can link to them- or how they can see something that is so simple and un-interesting in a different way and photograph it so that it looks interesting and exciting. “ By making the photograph both a material thing and a philosophical question ‘photography’ asks us to really look at what and how we are seeing, in the gallery and outside of it. It asks us to see what is right infront of our eyes. It asks us to get real.” - Geoffrey Batchen I think that this is a very interesting look on photography because it is so accurate.

TEXTURE & SUMMER PHOTOGRAPHS

BLENDING TEXTURES AND PHOTOGRAPHS

I have experimented here with overlapping the photos i took of a number of different textures, and the summer photographs that I took of a sophie calle inspirated colour shoot. I did this technique on photoshoot and overlapped the two photographs and then changed the opacity and the blending mode. i think that this is an effective technique and it adds alot to the original photograph.it makes it look more exciting and interesting because it adds alot of texture to the photograph, and changes alot from the orginal. I think my combining black and white with colour on the photograph on the far left makes it look very interesting. This is because everything is in black and white and then you are able to see a tiny bit of colour.

I think it is really effective how I have overlapped a number of pictures on top of eachother because it looks like there is a ripping effect on her face. I think that the combination of black and white below on the left is also a good contrast. this is because the photograph itself is in black and white and then the texture that i have overlapped it with looks like there is paint being splattered over the photograph. I think that i would be able to go further with this idea and photograph a number of different textures and overlap them with different photographs that I take within the course of photography. I think that combining this with manual editing would also be really effective. This is because it would have a number of different techniques going on with it.

Combining black& white

and coloured photographs.

I decided here to combine black and white and coloured photographs together and set them out in a way that a fina; piece may look- or a mopck up for a final piece. I think that it was an effective technique combining black and white and coloured photographs together because you can see more of range of images- i also think it is effective how the main image is in black and white but then the coloured images have been placed around the outside which draws your eye to there and makes the piece look much more interesting.

I then decided to use wire on the bottom right hand side of this piece. I then added parts of the colour photograph here and different coloured string. The main aim of this photoshoot was colour and this is why i decided to incoporate colour into as many different areas as i could. i think that this technique is very inetrestin g and effective and i am going to consider using a mix of colour photograps and black and white photographs when i am constructing my final piece.

I have experimented here with creating two differnet joiners like hockneys work. I think that this is effective because it shows different techniques that i could use, i could use these later on in my work and maybe for my final piece layout. With this first photograph i have used one and have cut it up into a number of different sections i then placed them so they were angled which creates an interesting effect. with the one on the left i have used two photographs which were from the same shoot and i have blended them together.

RE-SHOOTS

RE-SHOOTS

This is a re-shoot that i decided to set up based on my theme ‘if this is art’. I had to think deeply into this photoshoot and had to think about aspects such as; literal, technical, symbolic and cultural ideas. This idea enitially came from looking at the work done by sophie calle- as that was colour based. i took inspiration from her work and used it in my first photoshoot where i photographed a model wearing all of the same colour clothing, followed her around doing normal every day activities.

ISO- 800 F/ 5.0

L i teral , T e c h n i c al Cultural & Symbolic Ideas

ISO- 400 F/ 4.5

I think that this photoshoot also links in with the other artist that i began to research ‘david spero’. this is because he photographs buildings and environments that are not really very nice to look at, rural every day places. i think that a skatepark links in well with that type of environment because it is a normal everday place that you can pass. but i think then that i have interpretated his work well and have added in a model which makes the photographs look much more interesting- and have more of a meaning to them. as well as linking with the work of david spero this photoshoot that i have done links in also with the original artist that i decided to look at ‘sophie calle’- this is because one of her photoshoots that i looked into was based all around the theme of colour. i have taken inspiration from that shoot and have linked this photoshoot with colour- but have slightly changed it. I have made it so that the focus is the background- and that is made up of a number of bright, exciting colours.

ibrant

COLOUR

P E R S O N A L I

The ideas that I had behind this photoshoot were developed from my original shoot, my literal idea was to carry out a photoshoot that was taken in a colourful environment (skatepark) but get the model to wear plain clothing, so a contrast is made. my technical idea was to take photographs from a variety of different angles- close up,far away, from above and from below. The symbolic idea behind my photoshoot was focused upon the environment taking over the blandness of the clothes because the environment that I decided to shoot it is so colourful, and the clothes are simple and plain. The cultural idea behind my work was the colours that were in the environment linking with the emotions of the model in the photos and who they are as a person. The background at the skatepark had a variety of crazy colours, this contrasts with the emotion of the model because she has got a serious expression on her face the majority of the time.

I think that the use of the environment is effective in these photographs- this is because I think that it links in well with the theme that I have chosen- also it links in well with the artists that I have chosen, and it has a good use of colour. I think that other people would also be interested by the environment that I chose to take these photographs in- they may ask why I decided to use this environment, and what link it has to do with my work. This work compares to my original photoshoot and I think that I have improved a lot upon that photoshoot and my ideas have developed in a positive way. This is because my original photoshoot was quite simple, the photographs came out well but there was a lot of room for improvement. It links in with my original photoshoot because that was all about colour and dressing someone in an outfit that was all of the same colour, and then photographing them doing normal everyday things. I have developed this idea because instead of using colour in the outfit that the model is wearing I have changed that and have decided to take photographs in an atmosphere that is very colourful and exciting- and get the model to wear plain clothing. Which is almost the opposite to what I did in my original shoot, I think that this was a good idea and made the images very effective.

ISO- 400 F/ 4.8

The source of light in these photographs is coming from the sun which was above all of the angles that i was taking the photos at. the light from the sun wasn’t very strong on this day and did not create many strong shadows. i think that you are able to notice a lot of textures in these photographs- from the trees and bushes in the background, and the texture of the graffiti that is all on the walls around the skate park. the texture of these objects is something that you notice straight away because the background is the main focus of these images. If i was to give a title to this series of photographs then i would name it something like - colour in everyday places. This is because i think my title would have to include the word title because that is one of the main aims of my photoshoot- and what a lot of my work has been to do with during researching the theme ‘If this is Art’. I think that the use of the environment is effective in these photographs. This is because I like how it is an outdoor, exciting, colourful environment. I think that the environment stands out very well in my pictures and especially working well with the model and how I decided to dress her wearing plain clothing- it contrasts well. If I was to use a set of words to describe this photoshoot I would choose- colourful, exciting, vibrant, serious, graffiti, exciting, different, beauty and ugly. I think what interests me most about this photoshoot that I decided to do was the link that the colours have with emotions- and the contrast that the colourful background has on the person. This is because I like the contrast of the bright colours and then the plain clothes, as it allows the bright colours to stand out very well. I also like the contrast that the bright colours have with the emotion on the models facebecause the emotion that you would think goes with bright, vibrant colours is happiness and excitement. But instead I have done the opposite of this, and have made my model look very serious in the majority of the photographs that I have taken.

Main aim of photo shoot To create a re-shoot of the original photoshoots that I captured during summer. This wa and linking with the theme of ‘if this is art’. In this re-shoot I am going to expand my id tailed.

RE-SHOOTS

In this photoshoot the emotions and colours that I decided to look at were- Using a strawberry which is red and linking that colour to the emotion of seriousness, anger, love and jeaously. looking at the colours orange and lemon and using those fruits and linking that to happiness and the contrast of that emotion boredom. i think that is was effective to have some photographs using contrast emotions because it tells you more about the person. for example in these photographs i have used the colour red- in the photograph on the right both models have the same expression on there face which is a serious expression. However with the photograph on the left different emotions are being shown. The model on the left is making direct eyecontact with the camera which could show that the emotion she is feeling is love- whereas the model on the right is looking at her with a look of jealousy. Maybe she is jealous of the emotion that she is feeling- showing the contrast of emotions that can be shown through different colours.

HAPPINESS

I also decided to do another re-shoot which was based on similar ideas to the photoshoot that I did in the skatepark of a single model. This idea was taken from the original photoshoot that I did based on the work of sophie calle- where i dressed a model all in the same colour clothing- then followed her around and photographed her doing a number of different everyday activities. I have progressed on to using different colour objects in my photography- and trying to link the makeup that they are wearing- with the colour of the fruit that they are holding, representing the emotions that they are feeling. i chose a number of different colours that i think have a good link with emotions- happiness, anger, sad, serious and bored. I have put some I have taken of the photosome photographs graphs in black& were the modwhite because I els are holding think that it the same colour contrasts well fruit and there the colours- and emotions are the with some of the same,i have takemotion that is en some singular shown in these photographs were photographs.i the model is also like how feeling a sinsome of these gle emotion, and photographs insome photographs clude one model, were the models but then other are holding simphotoshoots only ilar fruit but include one of they have difthe models and ferent emotions are more upclose on their faces of the face. i had to think in detail about this photoshoot, the literal, technical, symbolic and cultural ideas behind the photoshoot. my literal idea was to Take a photograph with colour matching the fruit that I have chosen and the makeup for the person. Technical idea: Experimenting with light- having light shining on the face to create shadows, and having some photographs which are darker in there colour. Symbolic idea: Symboloising there emotionthrough expression, or what that certain persons personality is like. Cultural idea: Who you are as person, your interests and your personality and linking it to the photoshoot and the colours and emotions.i think that i have shown all of this efectively, through the colours and the makeup that I have chosen, the expressions that the models have on their faces- and what colour fruit they are linking.

I think that this photoshoot links in well with the theme that i am focusing upon ‘if this is art’. it is all about looking at the devised strategies that have been set up for the camerawhich is contridiciting the view that you have to sit around all day and wait for the perfect moment to take a photograph. in this photoshoot i have taken inspiration from sophie calle and have set up a photoshoot using coloured fruit, which is all about the performance of people eating something that is different coloured, to represent emotions and personalities.this re-shoot links in well with the artist sophie calle because it includes coloured food in my work- which is the main aim of one of her photoshoots that i began to look at. i think that i have taken inspiration well from her, but i have changed it slightly and developed ideas to link in with my work. i have decided to use people in my photogaphy and create a good link with them between the colourswhich links to the emotions that they may be feeling, and the personalities that they have as individuals.

Personality, Colour and Emotions

I think that If i was inside this set of photographs it will feel very exciting-i think this because of how much colour is involved in the photographs. I aslo think that you would feel alot of emotion and the people there would be constantly changing- i think this because of how many different expressions have been portrayed in the images. I think that this shoot was effective because it links in well with my theme ‘if this is art’, and also links in well with my artist sophie calle. however i think if i was to do this photoshoot again then i woule experiment with more vibrant and colourful makeup that would link to the colour that they were already showing. I used coloured lipsticks and a coloured background but I could use some paint on the face to really portay the colour that I was focusing on. i think that other people would find this shoot fun and would be interested by it, this is because this photoshoot includes a variety of different colours and different fun emotions.I think that this is a good re-shoot of my orignal stimulus because i have developed my ideas and have made them more effective. In my orignal photoshoot there wasnt much thopughht behind it, but in this photoshoot I have thought about it in depth - literal, technical, cultural and symbolic ideas. i have learnt alot from exploring this theme- such as different interesting ways to link my photoshoots to the artists that are involved, ideas behind a photoshoot, and also doing a variety of photoshoots that are set up, and some that are more natural.

PHOTOSHOOT EVALUATION:

What was successful? I think that this photoshoot was successful in the sense that the colours that I chose to focus on linked opposite emotions in one photograph, and then the focus of one certain emotion in a photograph were in my re-shoot because it was all about showing emotion through the expressions in the persons face- a

What didn’t work and why? I dont think that my technical idea worked aswell- this was experimenting with different sources of ligh because I didnt have a strong enough light to be able to make a shadow on the models face, so when I tograph.

What needs to be changed for the reshoot? If I was going to re-do this photoshoot then I would make sure that I had a powerful lamp that I could u effective and it was what I wanted to create.

I have done a third reshoot in which i have taken inspiration from both the artist sophie calle and dannyson phamm. i decided to do another reshoot because i thought that i could develop my ideas further and i could add more inspiration from artists and photographers that i have recently looked at. the idea behind this shoot was to use a number of different colours - one for each day. this links in well with the work of sophie calle because in her diet she ate food of all of the same colour one day, and the next day it would change colour. i have taken inspiration from sophie’s work to do with the colour inspiration and using a different colour for each day. i have then taken inspiration from a recent photographer that i have discovered- dannyson phamm. I have taken ideas and inspiration from him in the way that the photoshoot was set out and stylised. for example the bright colours that i used, the objects and how it was in a plain environment.

In this photograph i see the colour yellow being represented in the clothing that the model is wearing and objects that have been used in the photoshoot. the words that I would use to describe this photograph would be bright, exciting ad interesting. This is because such a bright shade of yellow has been chosen, and it stands out very well especially in the environment that it is in. I think that this photoshoot links in well with my original ideas, but it has been developed upon. This is because it is still all about colour which is the idea that I chose to work on in the first place. The parts that have been developed upon are using more than one colour, and deciding to use a plain backgroundthis is so the colours are the main focus and your eye is not distracted from them. The light that I used when taking these photographs was bright and was coming from an overhead lamp, I also used the flash on the camera because I think that it captured the colours and the light verl well. i then went on to editing the photographs using camera raw by adjusting the contrast, brightness etc. i did not edit them alot because i think that the original stimulus that i created was effective. What intrests me most about this work of art is how i have taken a number of different photographs that represent the different days of the week, and are all showing a different colour within them. i would describe the colours and tones that are in this picture as bright and vibrant. this s because this is one of the brightest colours that i have chosen to photograph, and i think that the flowers and the other objects link in really well with showing this. i think that this photoshoot that i have done has an excellent link to the artist sophie calle and ui have developed alot upon my ideas. this is because calles work was based on a food diet where she ate a different coloured food each day, i have interepreted that and have dressed a model in different coloured clothing from monday- friday.

Mid-week

From exploring this type of work, i have learnt that colours can have an excellent link to a number of different emotions. For example in my previous shoot i used different emotions to link in with the fruit/ objects that the model was holding, this has a good link because the emotions were able to show the emotion the colour was showing. but i have changed this shoot slightly and the majority of the photographs that i have taken have a simple plain emotion on the models face. I think that this is effective because it does not take the focus off of the actual model and the clothes and objects that she is holding. also i have based this photoshoot on the work of dannyson phamms work and in his work the majority of the models that have been used have plain expressions on their faces.

Thursday

The ideas that i was focusing on included cultural, literal, symbolic and technical. my Literal idea:

Taking a photograph that has been set up, using a number of differnt ideas. Technical idea:Experimenting with taking photographs at different angles, from above, from below, straight on, from the left and from the right, Symbolic idea: The colours of the clothes and of the objects that are of the same colour, taking over the blandness of the plain white environment that the photographs will be taken in. Cultural idea: Bland emotions being shown on the models face, contrasting all of the bright colours becuase you would expect the model to look happy when such bright exciting colours are being used. These were the ideas that i had for my photoshoot before i actually completed it. I think that i showed these really well, i used a number of different colours and objects in a plain environment which i think was effective because it allowed the focus to stay on the model in her bright clothes, and with the objects that were being held. i also experimented with taking photographs from a number of different angles which i think was effective. this is because some of them were more upclose and you could really see the detail of what was is in box and some were further away, allowing you to see the whole of the plain background . finally i plan on using 5 of these photographs but using the portrait ones, this is because i think they were the most effective.

In this photograph I can see a variety of different objects and different colours all combined together in the same frame. If i was to choose a set of words to describe these photographs then I would use; abstract, exciting, random and colourful. I am interested in this work because I like all of the colours that have been used, and I think that it links in really well with the photoshoots that i have done so far. I am interedted in the way that this work has been laid out and the use of colour that the photographer has decided to use- this is because the use of colour links in very well with shoots that I have done in the past. If i was able to ask the artist I would ask them if the objects in there work had any meaning, and why they decided to use these particular objects. I think that this would be an interesting effective question to ask because it would build your understanding of the photograph and you would be able to get more of an insight. I think if you were inside of these works of art then it would be a very exciting, adventourous place. This is because of all of the colour that has been used in the piece, and because of all of the different objects that have been used. I think the use of vibrant colours is effective in these photographs, this is because it makes it stand out really well and makes you interested and draws you into looking at the work. I think that other people would be drawn into this work also because of the colour as I think it would catch everybodys attention. I decided to use this artist because I think that his work could give me possible ideas for my final piece from the way that he set it out, and the use of colour that he has used.

Sigmar Polke

I think that Sigma Polke’s work is interesting beccause of the use of scribbles and lines that have been put over these photographs of bright colours. I think that this is a really good technique to use because it adds something eciting and colourful to a photograph that was plain to begin with. If i was to ask this artist any question then I think It would be ‘Was there a meaning for drawing over your photographs? and if so- what was that meaning?’ I would ask that question because I think that it would give me more of an understanding of what was going on in the photograph. I decided to look at this artist because he gave me inspiration of what I could make my final piece look like. I like his use of lines and drawing over photogaphs and I think that I could use this technique in my work as one of my manual edits. I think that it would link in well beause I have based all of my photoshoots on colour and this is a good link with colour.

Kate Steciw

I decided to look at the work done by Kate Steciw as it gave me inspiration on what i could make my final piece look like. I like the manual techniwues that she has used and the use of textures and things overlapping and coming out of the photograph. I think that this would link in really well with my work because it has a good use of colour in both her work and photoshoots that I have completed myself. I also like how she has presented one of her pieces (one on the left) in a simple frame, I plan on presenting my work in frames as I think that it looks very effective and allows not too much to be going on. I also like the work on the left that she has done and how she has included different sized shapes to cover parts of the photograph. I think that this is interesting and has a good effective, and if I was able to I would ask her how she decided on this idea- and what the meaning is behind it. I would describe the lines, shapes, colours and textures that are in these two photographs as exciting anhd random. The lines are going in all different directions causing the piece to be random, because so muchis going on. the shapes that are in both of these pieces are all so different from eachother and are not simple squares or rectangles so this is also random but looks effective. I find this work very interesting to look at because of all of the different textures and colours that have been used. I think that the artist putting them all together was really effective because although so much is going on in the image, I think that all the shapes and the colours work really well together.

I chose to look at this artist because I liked the mix of techniques that he has used in his work. He has taken simple photographs of buildings and lanscapes that has included a good use of colour, but is quite simple. I think that it was very effective for the artist to then add splattered coloured paint over the workthis is because the colour really emphasies the whole piece. If i was to ask this artist any question it would probably be- “how Does the paint link in with the idea behind these photographs?. I think using colour over a simple plain image is something that should be remebered when looking at these photographs. This is because I think it is a very effective technique, although is is relatively simple. I think that it would have good use in my work because I have based my photoshoots mainly around colour, so it would be a very good link between the two. The lines, textures, colours and shapes are all very extravegent because of the paint that has been added over the top. This is because the lines and shapes were relatively normal because these photographs were of buildings and landscapes, but as soon as the paint has been added the shapes completely change because there is something going on over the top. Also the paint has added alot more colour to the piece, the photographs involved colour in the first place, but the paint over the top is alot brighter and stands out alot more.

Gerhard

Richter

Dannyson Phamm

I have decided to base my final piece photoshoot around the work of Dannyson Phamm. I decided to do this because I think that he has a very good link with the photoshoots that I have previously done- this is because my work was based soley around colour, and you can obviously tell that his work has a very strong link with colour. I think the use of colour in Phamm’s work is very effective because of how bright it is, meaning that it stands out very well to everyone who is viewing it. I like how he has used a numbr of diffrent colours in his piece’s but he has stuck to the same ones throughout- yellow, purple, orange, blue, pink and black. I also like the use of the large coloured objects in the background, I think that it links very well with the work and makes it look better.

I have taken ideas from phamm’s work and I think that it has worked well. I set up a photoshoot and chose to use a number of different colours including- Red, Blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, white and black. I decided to use these colours because the majority of them are the main colours in the colour wheel- and most of them are very bright which i think stand out well in the photographs. I then bought and painted objects which I could use for my photoshoots, I took a number of different photos each being of a different colour using a differnt coloured outfit, and a number of different coloured objects. I think that my photoshoot was effective, had a very good link to dannyson phamm, to my theme and to colour.

I also like the use of the bright coloured makeup that has been used on the models in this work. i decided to use this in my photoshoot as well to emphaise the main aim of the photoshoot is based around colour. I think that this work links in nicely with the photoshoots that I have previously done, this is because they were based around colour and so is this final photoshoot. My ideas in my previous two photoshoots were linking colour in with emotions and moods. I did a photoshoot that was based in a very colourful environment and to to contrast the bright colours I used very simple bland emotions. This is what I did in this photoshoot based on the work of dannyson Phamm. I decided to do this because eveyrhting was colourful the background, the outfit, the makeup and the objects surrounding the model. So i thought that by using simple plain emotions it would work well, and contrast the colour. I have taken inspiration from this work and have done a photoshoot based around the idea of colour objects, environments and outfits. I then plan on linking my final piece with the work of sophie calle because she is the artist that i chose from my particular theme and have been looking at throughout this whole cour. I plan on laying my work out using her day by day and

POSSI Ide

I plan on laying my final piece out like how I have shown in the work of sophie calle’s and by using work of my own. I have decided upon this layout because sophie calle has been the artist that I have focused upon within my work and her work was photographed each day and of a different colour. So i plan on laying my work out using 7 simple frames and inside of those frames I will put each photograph that I have taken, each which I have taken on a different day- and each of a different colour. I have taken inspiration from sophie calle because of her use of colour, and how she has gone about laying out her work- and how she has used a different colour for each day. I have also taken inspiration from the photographer dannyson phamm. I took inspiration from him because i was very interested by his work, and it had an excellent link with colour. I plan on doing a re-shoot that is based on the work of dannyson phamm and laying it out how calle has layed her photographs out. I think that this is effective because it shows each day and how the colours have changed, showing a variety of different colour.

for my final piece i plan on choosing one photograph for each colour that i did my photoshoot on. I have chosen 5 because one will be for each day of the week, linking in very well with the work of sophie calle.I am then going to type out the day of the week and the colour that is in the photograph (using different names for the colour) and use it at the bottom of the picture that will be presented in a white frame. I took inspiration from the artist sophie calle when deciding on basing my work this term on colour. I have also taken inspiration from her in the way that I have decided to lay out my work, i have layed it out neatly and plan on having each photograph against a white background with a white frame. I am then going to use text aswell in my work including the day of the week, and the colour that is being represented in the photographs.I have also taken inspiration from the photographer dannyson phamm’s shoot that I have shown above. I took ideas from his work because I liked the use of colour in his work, how they were bright and vibrant and the way that the shoot was layed out.

Friday- Mai tai

I am not planning on doing any massive manual edits because I do not think that it would have much relevance to my work. the only manual edit that I plan on doing is sewing around the photograph with the same colour thread as the colour that is in the photograph. In this mock up formy final piece i also plan on keeping a diary for the whole week, and writing in it from monday- friday talking about my feelings and emotions. I have decided to do this because it links in really well with the work of sophie calle- although i have based my work on the photoshoot that she did of coloured foods i have also looked into some of her other photoshoots. In one of her pieces of work she had recieved a letter from her boyfriend who was breaking up with her, she then decided to send this letter out to all of her friends and get them to correct the spelling and grammar, and give their opinions on it- she then displayed all of this as a piece of art work. This is where i got the idea from to keep a diary of my feelings and emotions, and it will link well with this layout because something will be shown for each day- and then you will be able to get an idea of how i was feeling on that day, after reading the diary.

I have experimented with changing the colour of the background to match the colour of the outfit and the objects that i have used in the photoshoot. I decided to do this because my main idea was a photoshoot based around colourand this makes the link alot stronger with colour. I experimented with doing this edit on photoshop by cutting around the edge of the person- i then copy and pasted the layer so that there were two overlapping eachother. I then used a colour overlay on the background and blended it so that it only showed on the background, and not over the body of the model. This is another idea that i have for my mock ups- i plan on presenting these two photos as a3 images and then placing them in plain white frames. I will also use the text but just the day of the week and only use monday and tuesday. This is because I think this are the strongest colours because they are so bright and vibrant. I think it will be effective to use simple white frames because the photographs are in colour, and it will also link in well with sophie calle because her layouts are very neat and precise.

MOCK UP 2

MOCK UP 3

SOPHIE CALLE’S LETTER AND MY INTERPRETATION

to go along with my final piece photographs i plan on writing a diary of my own which will go from the days monday - friday. This would go very nicely with the first mock-up that I did of using 5 photographs from mondayfriday. I have taken this idea from the artist sophie calle who i have looked at in great depth throughout this theme. The photograph on the far left shows one of her pieces of work- this particular piece of work was a breakup text from her boyfriend, calle sent it out to all of her friends and family to get their opinions on it and to get all of them to correct any spelling or grammar. I think that this would make the piece very personal because it would be me writing how i feel during the week and what I am doing from day to day. I have done an example on the left which shows 3 different days and they are just small samples of what i may write. I have experimented with adding thread to the diary pages to express the colour that it focused on for that particular day of the week. I believe that this idea includes literal, symbolic and cultural ideas. It is literal because it is literally saying what i am doing and how i am feeling from monday- friday. the diary would also be symbolic because it is symbolising my feelings and my emotions , and finally it is cultural because of the time period in which it is set, which is now the year that i am living in.

EvaluationFinal Piece For my final piece I have decided to use the first mock- up that i planned, which is using 5 photographs from Monday- Friday and using words underneath that say the day of the week and then a different name for each colour.I have decided to also combine it with the last mock up that i did that was based on sophie calles work as well and i will write a diary of what i am doing and my feelings from monday to friday. I decided to use this one because I think that it linked in better with the work of Sophie Calle because of the way that i chose to lay it out- this is because there is a number of different images being shown and they all have white backgrounds which i think worked well with each different colour that i chose.I like the second and third mockup that I completed because I would have presented only one photograph and that would have been at a larger scale. However I decided to not carry forward with this idea because when adjusting the background colour on photoshop it was not always easy to go perfectly around the model, so there were no white spaces left. I also did not carry forward with the third or second mock up because it did not link to the work of sophie calle as much, this is in the layout because sophie calle used a number of different images in her work that were taken over a number of different days and if I was to of gone further with this mock up then I would only be using one image for my final piece. I also decided on the first mock up to taken forward for my final piece because I like the use of the writing combined onto the photographs. I have written the day of the week and then a different work for each colour that the model is wearing in the photograph. I think that this links in well with sophie calle’s work because that it how she has layed out her work but i decided to use different names for the colours instead of yellow, orange, red etc. to make it more interesting. I think that the images that I have chosen for the first mock up show more of a variety and I think that these images are stronger than the ones that I presented in especially my second mock up. I think that they are stronger because they show more of a variety- images taken closer up, some from further away and from different angles. I think that this is very effective because it shows that I have used a number of differnet techniques when I was taking these photographs. I think that this idea for my final piece would explore literal, technical and culutral ideas. This is mainly because of the diary that I plan on writing from monday to friday- It would be literal because i am literally writing how i am feeling and what i am doing from monday-friday, symbolic because it symbolises how i am feeling over the week and cultural because of the time period that it is written in, which is now.
