But the new gazebo at Mundelein’s Gordon Ray Park was built with a different purpose. The simple, wooden structure was donated to the Mundelein Park and Recreation District so local volunteers could have someplace to feed free lunches to needy children during the summer. The effort is called Mundelein LUNCH, which stands for Local United Network to Combat Hunger. “We don’t know what they’re eating at home,” said Susan Zentz, a coordinator with Mundelein LUNCH. “Without the lunches that we give out in the summer, some of the children might not have a nutritious meal each day.” Mundelein LUNCH isn’t the only suburban group feeding kids this time of year. Free lunches — and sometimes breakfasts, too — can be had in Carol Stream, Elgin, Palatine and other towns. The meals are provided by groups including the Northern Illinois Food Bank and served by volunteers like those in Mundelein. Costs are covered by the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Summer Food Service Program. Food insecurity is a real issue for many children when school lets out for the summer. Kids who get free or discounted breakfasts or lunches at school lose that access to nutritious meals. That’s where the USDA comes in. With the help of community groups like Mundelein LUNCH, the agency plans to serve more than 200 million free meals to children nationwide this summer. REFLEJOS.COM

It would go beyond such sports as basketball and soccer and emphasize solo activities to engage students and, accordingly, improve student performance in the classroom. “Physical education needs to look different because not everybody is physically engaged and active, and participating (in sports) ... it’s just not what they want to do or it’s not what they are good at,” said Tracey Jakaitis, U-46 student wellness coordinator. “This curriculum very much is moving away from a team sport model focus, and it’s bringing a lot more opportunities for fitness and individual student growth,” she said. “We need our students to experience a variety of activities — not basketball, volleyball, badminton and soccer every year. You have to find something they like.” Officials propose using heart-rate monitors to track students’ fitness levels, count steps and calories burned and to help them learn how physical activity affects their health. “The districts around us are still very much doing a sports model,” Jakaitis said. “Everybody is trying to incorporate the heart-rate technology ... we are a little bit behind on that piece.” In 2015, U-46 implemented new physical education curriculum and resources in its 40 elementary schools. But what if by that time it’s already too late? A large new study contains some alarming data about the state of children’s mental health in the United States, finding that depression in many children appears to start as early as age 11. By the time they hit age 17, the analysis found, 13.6 percent of boys and a staggering 36.1 percent of girls have been or are depressed. These numbers are significantly higher than previous estimates. Understanding the risk of depression is critically important because of the close link between depressive episodes and serious issues with school, relationships and suicide. While researchers have long known about the gender gap in depression, with more adult women than men suffering from the condition, the new numbers show that whatever divergent paths boys and girls take happens even earlier than expected. Pero, el Congreso federal de EEUU tiene la última palabra en cualquier cambio a la condición política de la isla. Como sea, esa circunstancia no coartó al gobernador Roselló para anunciar que su gobierno seguirá adelante con el objetivo de convertir a la isla en el estado 51 de EEUU al declarar que Puerto Rico votó a favor de la estadidad. El gobernador dijo que decidió crear una comisión que buscará que el Congreso valide el resultado del plebiscito. En cualquier democracia, la voluntad expresada de la mayoría en un proceso electoral debe prevalecer siempre, apuntó. Sería altamente contradictorio que Washington exija democracia en otras partes del mundo y no responda al derecho legítimo de

Apricot Chili Marinated Lamb Tacos with Mango Slaw PREP TIME: 20 minutes SERVINGS: 5 INGREDIENTS Marinated Lamb 5 ounces apricot preserves 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) canola oil 1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) balsamic vinegar 3 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 2 1/2 teaspoons minced Fresno chili 1 1/4 lbs American lamb, top round Mango Jicama Slaw 1 large fresh mango, peeled, seeded and diced* 1 (10 ounces) small jicama , peeled and shredded 6 ounces (3/4 cup) nonfat plain yogurt 1/4 cup thinly sliced chives 1 teaspoon honey Salt and pepper to taste 10 whole wheat flour tortillas, 6 inch 1 plum tomato, finely diced
INSTRUCTIONS YIELD: 10 tacos (2 per serving) To make Marinated Lamb: In a large bowl, whisk together the preserves, canola oil, vinegar, garlic, and Fresno chili. Add the lamb, turning to coat. Cover and marinate, refrigerated, 3 hours. Heat grill to medium high heat. Remove lamb from marinade and grill to desired doneness (125-130 degrees F for medium rare). Remove from heat and let rest. Before service, thinly slice.
To make Mango Jicama Slaw: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and gently mix. Cover and refrigerate until service. Per order: Warm two tortillas. Place about 1 ½ ounces thinly sliced cooked lamb in each tortilla. Top with a generous 1/3 cup Mango Jicama Slaw. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon diced tomato. Oak Brook’s restaurant shines with well-devised farm-to-table menu BY SUSAN STARK

Honey is a theme, a mission and a flavor building block woven throughout B. Restaurant, the farm-to-table eatery in the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center. And for good reason. Honeybee hives dot the surrounding grounds, and the harvested crop is a frontand-center ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. B. offers rotating lunch and dinner menus with shared plates, charcuterie (prepared by an in-house butcher) and thin-crust pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven behind the bar in what owners call “modern farm cuisine.” According to our server, produce for the restaurant is grown onsite in the chef’s garden. And if they don’t grow it, food is purchased from small local farms — local within a 600-mile radius. The view of the beautifully groomed grounds isn’t overwhelmed by a stuffy interior. A no-fuss dining area with updated midcentury modern tables and chairs are complemented with high-top stainless-steel tables for larger groups or for sharing. Greeting us with an offer of specialty cocktails or the workings of a full bar and wine list, our server was ready to discuss the restaurant’s aims and answer any questions. He also presented a small plate with slices of chewy, grainy bread with fresh whipped butter and a dish of B.’s signature honey. What seems at first to be a limited menu, it offers the concentrated efforts of the kitchen without empty filler items, yet offers a variety, too. We started with a dense, pumpkin risotto dotted with toasted root vegetable chips. In this case, the risotto was creamy, toothy with a perfect al dente texture. A simple dish of carrots was a temptation that will have to wait for another visit as well as the often recommended lamb meatballs and wood-fired pizzas. My friend and I wanted to share a salad and so chose the Augustus, one of four options. The kitchen graciously split the dish for us. Tender, buttery, fresh bibb lettuce leaves present a bed for a few strips of shaved romaine cheese and what they called a honey crumble. Going out on a limb and guessing, I’d say a thin spread of honey, say on a baking sheet, is let to dry or bake in a warm oven. Then with a pastry scraper, broken and scraped into dust. Anyway, it makes a sweet, crunchy, toasty texture that melts into the Romano, boosting its flavor. A creamy garlic and honey dressing adds a subtle layer of flavor to a thoroughly green and fresh salad. Some patrons at the bar and in the nearby lounge were enjoying pizza fresh from the

brick oven behind the bar. The enticing smell of fresh-baked crust wafted through the room, and I had to ask which pizza they were eating. Turns out it was the sausage, which includes roasted pear, creamy chevre, sweet drop peppers and roasted pecan pesto. Other pizzas include a classic Margherita, a Brie pizza with pancetta, a velvety sauce made by combining a bechamel with pureed cooked onions and dates with a honey drizzle, and a duck pizza with sweet potato puree, maple leaf duck confit, sweet onion and fennel cherry glaze. For an entree, I chose the cider-braised pork cheeks, crispy potato wheel, braised red cabbage with mustard oil and horseradish gremolata. A beautifully styled dish, the pork’s savory tender sweetness was the perfect foil for a bite of crisp crunch of potato. The cabbage was nearly caramelized, but its underlying bitterness kept it from being too sweet. My friend chose the Glenarm organic salmon and shrimp with silky butternut squash noodles, Hubbard squash, lemon brodetto (a rich silky broth) and tomato jam. The shrimp was toothsome and buttery and the salmon hearty. The lemon broth and jam required a slight dusting of salt to let the flavors bloom, but they did and how. Perfect portions allowed for a taste from

the dessert menu. All the desserts are priced at $6 and are plenty for sharing. That said, Kickin’ S’mores Tart was tempting but not tasted on this trip because it looked like enough for more than two people. Truly a platter of beauty with graham cracker dust, toasted meringue dollops, toasted to that elusive caramel golden brown that marshmallows cooked over an open fire never quite achieve. Does burst into flames sound familiar? The plate is finished with jerk seasoned chocolate marquis and chocolate phyllo shards. My dinner companion and I thorough-

Because we at first chose the sold-out berry crumble, our waiter was able to ask and get us a small scoop of the crumble’s accompanying fresh ice cream, too. Delicious. As the seasons change, it will be worth a trip back to see what B.’s chefs create with the changing palette of produce.

‘Wonder Woman’
This movie is a hit that even Hollywood can’t ignore

Batman is the superhero with the calling-card beam of light, but Wonder Woman sent a signal that even Hollywood couldn’t miss. Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” grossed $103.3 million in North America over its debut weekend, a figure that easily surpassed industry expectations, set a new record for a film directed by a woman and bested all previous stand-alone female superhero movies put together. (There aren’t many and there hasn’t been one in 12 years.) Strong reviews (93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and word of mouth (an A CinemaScore) pushed the film into must-see status. Wonder Woman, that Amazonian warrior-princess last in the spotlight in ‘70s, lassoed the zeitgeist. “Wonder Woman” is a hit, and in a movie industry that has seldom put female filmmakers behind the camera for its biggest blockbusters, it could be an important one. It certainly had that feel opening weekend, where droves of moviegoers came wearing “We are all Diana” T-shirts, young girls flocked in Wonder Woman outfits and even movie stars were blowing kisses at the movie and calling it a “game changer.” “I am a filmmaker who wants to make successful films, of course. I want my film to be celebrated,” Jenkins said. “But there’s a whole other person in me who’s sitting and watching what’s happening right now who so hopes, not for me, that this movie defies expectation. Because I want to see the signal that that will send to the world.” Jenkins’ objective appeared to be met by the opening of “Wonder Woman,” a heavily marketed $150 million movie that spent a decade in development before finally - after hordes of other superheroes - making it to the big screen. “Wonder Woman” didn’t surpass the

Superman” and “Suicide Squad.” But unlike those releases, “Wonder Woman” is good enough to play strongly through the next weeks. “The momentum is with us in every way,” said Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. Jenkins and “Wonder Woman” burst through Hollywood’s glass ceiling with one of the rarest things: a summer blockbuster helmed by a woman. “Maybe this raises awareness that female directors are a force to be reckoned with,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. That’s been especially hard-to-miss this summer. Sofia Coppola, whose upcoming release “The Beguiled” remakes the 1971 Don Siegel-Clint Eastwood movie from a female perspective, last week became just the second female filmmaker to win best director at the Cannes Film Festival. “I try to keep making work and I have a female point of view that I embrace,” Coppola said recently. “I don’t want to speak so politically. I just feel like that’s not my role. But I’m happy to put my work out there.” Cannes juror Jessica Chastain also drew widespread applause for questioning the
quality of the female characters on view at the festival. Her fellow jury member Maren Ade, the German director of “Toni Erdmann,” spoke about the dearth of female filmmakers. “I found after a while always being surrounded by men doing this job, the impression comes up that it’s maybe not a good job for a woman,” Ade said. “I think that’s completely wrong and I think we need much more women doing films. We all want the film business to reflect modern society.” With its action movies and comic-book films, summer has long been the most male moviegoing season of the year - one where even female Ghostbusters are enough to spark a tempestuous culture war. But Jenkins and Coppola have some company this season. Lucia Aniello, a writer and director from “Broad City,” has released her bachelorette comedy “Rough Night.” In August, Kathryn Bigelow returns with her Detroit riots thriller “Detroit.” It’s shaping up to be an atypically tough summer for misogyny at the multiplex. Yet researchers who have spent years charting the lack of progress for female directors in Hollywood are skeptical much has changed.
“High-profile cases, such as Kathryn Bigelow and Patty Jenkins, can dramatically skew our perceptions of how women are actually faring as film directors,” said San Diego State University professor Martha M. Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film. “While their successes are encouraging, it is important to consider the larger picture and to continue counting the numbers of women working on screen and behind the scenes so we can have a conversation about women’s representation and employment that is grounded in a verifiable reality.” According to the center’s latest Celluloid Ceiling study, women comprised 7 percent of directors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films of 2016. It was 9 percent in 1998. Stacy L. Smith, director of the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at USC Annenberg, cited the initiative’s three-year study that found female directors “face a steep fiscal cliff as they attempt to move from independent to more commercial filmmaking.” Of the 41 women directors interviewed, 44 percent said they were interested in directing action films or blockbusters. “We would all like to hope that the success of ‘Wonder Woman’ will open doors not only for Patty Jenkins but for other female directors,” Smith said.

Queridos padres, Nuestros hijos tienen un potencial ilimitado y unos sueños tan grandes que podrían tocar el cielo. Lo que no tienen es un sistema educativo que financie las escuelas de manera justa. De hecho, el modelo de financiación de Illinois crea una disparidad que impide que muchos niños reciban la educación que necesitan para competir en el mundo moderno. Es inmoral. Peor aún, hemos permitido, durante generaciones, que esto sea así. Las dificultades no afectan a una única zona del estado. Tenemos un sistema desigual que falla tanto a los alumnos de zonas urbanas como a estudiantes de áreas suburbanas y rurales. Los distritos más perjudicados son los que tienen viviendas de escaso valor y donde residen los niños más pobres. Algunos estudiantes entran, cada día, en edificios relucientes, y tienen acceso a una amplia variedad de cursos, a la última tecnología y a aulas con un número reducido de alumnos. Estos estudiantes se merecen asistir a buenas escuelas que les preparen para tener éxito en el futuro... pero nuestros hijos también lo merecen. Lamentablemente, existen demasiadas escuelas que afrontan una realidad bien distinta. Debido a la insuficiente financiación que reciben, algunos centros se ven obligados a eliminar asignaturas optativas y a prescindir de orientadores y bibliotecarios; deben decidir entre contratar maestros o sustituir la caldera estropeada. Algunas escuelas imparten clases en los armarios del personal de limpieza. Es descorazonador — merecemos algo mejor. Durante años, han sido muchos los que han intentado solucionar el problema de la infrafinanciación de las escuelas, pero ahora, por fin, parece que hay esperanza. La Asamblea General aprobó, la semana pasada, la ley 1 del Senado (SB 1), que destina nuevos fondos a todos los distritos escolares. Puede que no sea la primera vez que oiga hablar de una ley que prevé redistribuir fondos estatales entre las escuelas, o que incluso se haya opuesto a una normativa anterior. No debe confundirlas con la SB 1. Lo único que se interpone entre el fallido status quo y un sistema educativo equitativo para todos nuestros hijos es la firma del gobernador. Según la SB 1: •
Ningún distrito escolar pierde ni un centavo de la financiación estatal o de los impuestos sobre la propiedad.

La nueva financiación se distribuye entre las prácticas que han demostrado ser las más adecuadas para el desarrollo y aprendizaje de los alumnos.

Los distritos más infrafinanciados recibirán dinero gracias al aumento de fondos.
•
Los distritos con mayores cargas impositivas podrán recibir ayudas.
•
Los gastos estarán disponibles para que cualquier ciudadano que paga impuestos pueda consultarlos.
•
El sistema se simplifica al emplear una única fórmula que trata a todos los distritos por igual.

Su madre, Lourdes, falleció el pasado noviembre, pero ella encontró una forma de superar esa pérdida. Al hacerlo se convirtió en una de las líderes del equipo de las Huskies que terminó siendo uno de los mejores equipos ganando títulos regionales y seccionales antes de perder en tanda de penalties en un superseccional. A veces salgo a correr para despejar mi mente, pero jugar ha sido un buen desahogo“. Santos anotó 6 goles y sumó 10 asistencias como centrocampista defensiva. ife is full of love and loss. For most high school seniors that final loss ends playing days that likely started when they first were able to began kicking a soccer ball. For Naperville’s Ashley Santos, loss has been far bigger than soccer games. Her mother, Lourdes, died last November, but she found a way to survive that loss. In doing so she became one of the leaders for a Huskies team that ended up being one of the top teams in the state, winning regional and sectional titles before just coming up short in a penalty-kick shootout in a supersectional. She will play next season at Illinois State. Santos was undoubtedly the emotional leader for the Huskies, who not only persevered through the personal pain of the loss of her mother, but also shined while taking the field. For her stellar efforts, seemingly countless contributions and passion of the game, Santos has been named the captain of the 2017 Daily Herald DuPage County All-Area girls soccer team. “Without a doubt Ashley was the engine that made the team go,” Huskies coach Steve Goletz said. “I think the amazing thing, and I’m sure I’ve said it 100 times, is that she was able to play at that level and has been one of our best leaders despite what she had to go through. An investigative journalist may spend months or years researching and preparing a report. An investigative reporter may use one or more of these tools: Analysis of documents, databases of public records, investigation of government and business practices and their effects, research into social and legal issues, in some instances, interviews with anonymous sources and the federal or state Freedom of Information Acts. University of Missouri journalism professor Steve Weinberg defined investigative journalism as: “Reporting, through one’s own initiative and work product, matters of importance to readers, viewers, or listeners.” In many cases, the subjects of the reporting wish the matters under scrutiny to remain undisclosed. Es más, el autobús los esperara en el mismo lugar después de que termina el juego.
