Latino-, Hispanic-, and Chicano-owned businesses have always been an integral part of Chicago’s cultural and entrepreneurial fabric. However, many of these operations continue to reel from the effects of the ongoing pandemic, threatening community lifelines and weakening the opportunity for new businesses to grow. So, as National Heritage Month rolls through starting September 15, we’re making moves by spotlighting some of the community’s top purveyors of coffee, plants, beers, tamales, and so much more. Remember—good neighbors buy local, so here’s a list of 22 Latino-owned small businesses we love.

Instead of corn husks, Yvolina wraps her masa creations in banana leaves and fills them with rich mole and meats, as well as offering a variety of farm-fresh vegetarian options like kale, squash, and eggplant. She also makes spectacular drinks to wash it all down, from sweet, creamy horchata to refreshing kale-mango juice. How to support: Stop by for first

West Town Stashed in the sunny grounds of West Town microbrewery and barbecue mecca District Brew Yards, this cutting edge craft outfit is headed by Mexican-American brothers Javier and Jose Lopez. The pair started tinkering with homebrewing in their childhood Hermosa home, and soon realized they had quite a knack for the sudsy arts. Fast forward to today and Casa Humilde is churning out some of the city’s best brews, many of which pay homage to the brothers’ proud Mexican heritage. Standouts include the agua fresca-inspired Nopali, a 5% ABV Farmhouse Ale spiked with prickly pear and juicy hops, and the classic Maizal Mexican Lager, an easy-going porch pounder brewed with a bit of corn for a lingering sweetness and supremely dry finish. Lakeview Soraya Rendon is behind this BYOB eatery, a perennial Michelin Bib Gourmand list headliner. Its abbreviated menu includes Grilled Pork Ribs, Mahi Mahi Ceviche, Flautas stuffed with chicken, and Empanadas filled with peanut butter for a sweet finale. How to support: Reserve via Google. Available for Reservations.

Irazu

Bucktown Chicago’s only Costa Rican cantina has been serving authentic cuisine since 1990, so they definitely know what’s up. Helmed by Henry Cerdas, who took over the biz from his parents Gerardo Cerdas and Miriam Cerdas-Salazar, this family-run joint never disappoints. All their dishes are bursting with flavor, with plenty of veggie, seafood, and meat options to spare. If you swing by, be sure to bring cash (they’re cash-only) and beers (they’re also BYOB), or wine (and BYOW), or vodka (also BYOV) or… you get the gist. How to support: Reserve via TableAgent or order take-out and delivery online. Available for Reservations.

Las Tablas

Lakeview and Portage Park Back when it debuted in 1991, this Colombian steakhouse had to sell Mexican food in order to bring in customers. Thankfully, the availability of Colombian food is growing in Chicago, and the now dual-location Las Tablas is standing tall as one of the oldest purveyors in the city. Along with hearty helpings of prime beef, there are plenty of options for vegetarians alongside a killer selection of margaritas to enjoy on the breezy outdoor patio. Federal Health Officials authorize Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months of age

Vaccination for the youngest Chicagoans to begin next week, all residents urged to ensure their entire family is up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccine

CHICAGO –Following final approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all children ages 6 months through 4 years are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Both approved vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech (for children under 5) and Moderna (for children under 6) were found to be safe and effective in preventing serious outcomes from COVID-19. Vaccine doses for these age groups have already begun to arrive in Chicago and providers can begin to administer them immediately. “Families across the city have been waiting for this news, and we are thrilled to begin administering this vaccine to children under 5 all across Chicago this week,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Vaccines are the reason we’ve continued to see record-low hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 in recent weeks, despite a recent increase in cases, and I hope that residents continue to protect Chicago by vaccinating the youngest members of their families.” “We have been planning our roll out for months, have received delivery of nearly 25,000 doses already, so vaccinations can begin right away,” added CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D. “As you’re bringing the youngest members of your family in for their vaccinations, it’s a great time to get the entire family upto-date – including boosters for anyone age 5 and up.” Parents have a choice between Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines are free, no government-issued ID or insurance is required. For children in this youngest age group: PFIZER (6 MONTHS THROUGH 4 YEARS) IS: 3 doses 1/10 of an adult dose For children 6 months through 4 years old 3 weeks between the first two doses, third dose at least 2 months after the second MODERNA (6 MONTHS THROUGH 5 YEARS) IS: 2 doses 1/4 of an adult dose For children 6 months through 5 years old 4 weeks between two doses Dr. Arwady urged parents to talk to their child’s healthcare provider or visit trusted websites – including Chicago.gov/Under5Vax – to learn more about the vaccines, and make a plan to get their children vaccinated assoonaspossible.“Mostimportantly, theresearchshows that vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe outcomes for these young children. While thankfully, the youngest children have not seen high rates of severe outcomes as much as older people, since the beginning of the pandemic, 442 children aged 0 to 4 years across the U.S. have died from COVID-19. As always, vaccination is the best protection against severe and tragic outcomes.” There are many ways for children under 5 to get vaccinated. Clinics may offer Pfizer, Moderna, or both: Family health care providers– CDPH recommends families first reach out to their pediatrician or family medical provider to see if appointments are available. El Poder del Sol The Power of the Sun

Lightning bug populations are dimming. Here’s what we can do about it BY JENNY WHIDDEN

For Reflejos

A longtime hallmark of summertime and childhood for many is in danger: fireflies slowly are blinking out as part of a “great insect decline,” scientists say. Habitat loss, light pollution and pesticide use are driving the lightning bug population down, causing concern for biodiversity and food chain stability. The bugs are just one species affected by a global phenomenon that finds 40% of insects to be threatened with extinction. “It really is about the biodiversity out there,” said Jim Anderson, the vice president of Citizens for Conservation. “All these insects we might not see on a regular basis or pay attention to, but they’re out there. They’re playing a role in nature, and some of them are really, really important.” While it might seem that this year in particular there are more fireflies than usual, that’s likely due to accelerated mating cycles as a result of warming temperatures, Anderson said. Amid a hotter climate, fireflies tend to mate and emerge earlier in the year. In the last century, the average daily temperature in Illinois increased by 1-2 degrees, a recent studyfound. While Anderson said earlier mating cycles haven’t occurred for long enough to study their

It’s a major concern,” said Marianne Alleyne, a professor of entomology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Alleyne

also serves as vice president of the Entomological Society of America. Alleyne said insect cycles go up and down every year, but evidence shows that firefliies and other insects are generally declining over time. However, Alleyne added that scientists need more quality data to continue accurately monitoring such a massive problem. In terms of solutions, conserving natural areas is one of the core approaches. In 2019, a Biological Conservation study reported that conversion to intensive agriculture is the main driver of waning insect populations. “Fireflies are going to have a better chance of living and finding a mate in open space areas where there is no major loss of habitat, and there’s less impact by pesticides and pollution,” Anderson said. “Providing open space gives them a refuge.” Anderson said Citizens for Conservation, a volunteer-based group based in Barrington, works to preserve biodiversity and prepare habitats for endangered species. One of the group’s goals is to proactively create healthy landscapes. “If we can prepare habitat, not only on Citizens for Conservation lands and forest preserve land, but in people’s back yards, then these opportunities exist for animals to coexist with us,” Anderson said. “It’s going to save us money in the long run -- and really, the long

run is no longer the long run. This is in front of us today.” Nicole Flowers-Kimmerle, a horticulture educator at UIUC’s Illinois Extension program, said there are several steps individuals can take to encourage local firefly activity. Fireflies rest on tall blades of grass during the day, and their larvae live in the soil, thriving off of snails and other small insects. Mowing too often or using too much pesticide can effectively drive lightning bugs from your yard. Flowers-Kimmerle recommends letting parts of your lawn overgrow, while maintaining areas that you or your family use often to control pests of concern like ticks. Fireflies enjoy natural debris such as leaves, and need soil as opposed to mulch. Homeowners can also turn to native plants over typical expansive grass lawns. To cut down on the impact of pesticides, Flowers-Kimmerle encouraged people to consider using them during only part of the year, on select portions of their lawns, and opting for pest control alternatives such as mosquito discs for standing water. • Jenny Whidden is a climate change and environment writer working with the Daily Herald through a partnership with Report For America.

Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself from severe outcomes due to COVID-19. However, did you know that you are only considered up-todate on COVID-19 vaccination if you have received all booster doses when eligible? While 76% of Chicagoans age 12 and up have completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series, just 42% have also had the recommended vaccine booster. The Chicago Department of Public Health strongly encourages all eligible Chicagoans to get their booster dose now — no matter the type of COVID-19 vaccine they originally received. Booster eligibility was also just extended to those age 5-11.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes to COVID-19 boosters Anyone age 5 or older who received an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) should get a booster dose five months after the second dose of their original vac-

cine series. People who received the J&J vaccine should receive a booster at least two months after their initial dose — for these individuals, the CDC prefers either of the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) as a booster dose. Adults 50 years and older, as well as moderately or severely immunocompromised individuals, should receive a second mRNA booster. Find more information about boosters onCDPH’s website. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are readily available across the city — in hospitals, physicians’ offices, local pharmacies, through Protect Chicago At Home, pop-up clinics hosted by the City, and more. For more information on boosters and to find your vaccine, visit Chicago. gov/COVIDvax. All COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are free to everyone, no insurance or government ID required.

Elgin offers ‘Block Party in a Box’ to residents -- for free

I 15

BY RICK WEST

For Reflejos

Elgin is looking to bring the party to the people with a new initiative designed to help promote neighborhood gatherings and a stronger sense of community. The city’s new “Block Party in a Box” is a mobile trailer full of stuff that might have to be rented or scrounged up from multiple neighbors to hold a party -- tents, folding tables, chairs, street barricades, games and more. The trailer is free to reserve, and the city handles drop-off and pickup. The idea came from Elgin City Council member Dustin Good, who proposed it during last year’s budgeting process. Good had been hearing from residents that they wanted ways to improve their block parties without having to purchase multiple items they may never use again. “I’m thrilled to offer this new amenity to Elgin to help foster positive neighbor-to-neighbor interactions as much as possible,” Good said in a news release. “My hope is that Elgin residents throw block parties not just to celebrate good food, music and conversations, but to also use these events as a catalyst toward building stronger neighborhoods.” The $20,000 portable party unit was unveiled last month at an East Side Neighborhood Garden art event. “We got to break it in, and we had a lot of fun,” said Sarah Hunt, a member of the event

committee. “Last year, I kind of ran around borrowing folding tables and chairs from this neighbor and that neighbor and loaning some of mine, and it was a lot of energy going into one simple thing.” Hunt said they ended up using a lot of what was in the trailer, which includes outdoor games like bocce ball, volleyball and badminton. A projector and screen also are included, as are extension cords, bungee cords and sandbags to hold the tents in place if you want to use them on the pavement. “It was very user-friendly,” Hunt said. “I think it’s a great option for people who want to do events, and it just makes our community more connected and stronger.” The Block Party in a Box is available on a first come, first served basis and can be reserved by simply checking a box as part of the block party special events permit process at cityofelgin.org/blockparty. There is a $10 application fee and a $50 refundable deposit.

26 years waiting for 6 questions: My citizenship journey BY MADHU KRISHNAMURTHY

For Reflejos

Earlier this month, Iwroteabout my journey to this promised land and 26 years of waiting to reach the moment when I finally take my U.S. citizenship test. Having been educated at an American university and being a multilingual journalist for 23 years, my knowledge of U.S. government and history was enough to be confident about acing the test. Still, I was a bit nervous -- a common feeling among immigrants interacting with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. No matter who it is -- whether someone with a doctorate or an elderly immigrant who barely speaks English -- everyone gets nervous, said Nora Allen, the USCIS immigration services officer who conducted my citizenship interview and test last Thursday. In the days leading up to the interview, I’d taken the practice tests and reviewed the 100 civics questions, of which any 10 could be asked on the test. You need to get six answers correct to pass. It came down to six randomly chosen questions and an unusually kind and friendly immigration services officer who took care and interest in my coming to America story. If you’d like to test your own civics knowledge, here are the questions I was asked: • When is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms? • Where is the Statue of Liberty? • What is one power of the federal government? • What is the supreme law of the land? • If the president can no longer serve, who becomes president? • Who was the first president of the United States? Having passed the test, soon I will make a promise of my own to my chosen country when I take the oath of citizenship and pledge my allegiance.

Protecting Dreamers

Last week, the U.S. House approved language protecting “Documented Dreamers.” It amends the Child Status Protection Act to protect dependent children of green card applicants and long-term dependent children of employment-based nonimmigrants from aging out of the legal immigration system. Due to their lawful status in the United States until they turn 21, “Documented Dreamers” are excluded from the temporary deportation protections and work authorization afforded by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, which requires a recipient to have “no lawful status on June 15, 2012.” The amendment was based on legislation co-authored by U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg. “Due to the green card backlog and bottlenecks in our immigration system, many dependent children of green card applicants and employment-based visa holders who have lived most of their lives in the United States are aging out of our legal immigration system as they turn 21,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Our amendment would end that, protecting these young people from self-deportation so they can continue to learn, work, and contribute to the country they have known as home.”

The news conference is being held in partnership with the City of Highland Park, the Highland Park Public Library, the Highwood Public Library and Community Center and more than 12 groups serving area immigrant communities.

Leading nurse

Rocio Sanchez of Round Lake recently was named one of the 40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders in Illinois by the Illinois Nurses Foundation. Sanchez, a first-generation immigrant and first-generation college graduate, began working toward her nursing degree while in high school and has worked as a nurse for nearly six years. In April, Sanchez was named Advocate Condell Medical Center’s 2021 Nurse of the Year. She chairs the Libertyville hospital’s Shared Governance Council and the Professional Development Committee, and serves as treasurer-elect of the Hispanic Nurses Association. Sanchez participated on a medical mission trip to provide care to an underserved region of El Salvador before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, she volunteered and trained to work in the emergency department and intensive care unit on Advocate Condell’s critical care float team. “I want to give back in any way I can -- especially as relates to my Hispanic culture,” Sanchez said.

Seniors quinceañera

Elgin-area older adults will have an opportunity to experience a “quinceañera,” or “fiesta de quince años,” a comingof-age party traditionally celebrated by Latin American families when a girl turns 15 years old. A quinceañera is a celebration of life, and a collective representation of love and support. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. July 27, at Lugar, 205 Fulton St., Elgin. It will include music, entertainment and a fashion show. A bilingual program will be offered in the afternoon, with a special performance by Folkloric Dance Group Quetzali. There will be a meet and greet with Illinois Department on Aging Director Paula Basta. The event, sponsored by the Elgin Police Department and Senior Services Associates, is open to seniors of all cultures, and backgrounds. Register by calling Senior Services Associates at (847) 741-0404.

Disabilities law

July is Disability Pride Month and July 26 marks the 32nd anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, commercial facilities, telecommunications and state and local government services. Then-President George H.W. Bush signed it into law in 1990. Today, 40.8 million, or 12.7%, of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population has a disability, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey from 20162020. • Share stories, news and happenings from the suburban mosaic at mkrishnamurthy@dailyherald.com

Only Murders in the Building”.
