MAYOR’S Welcome
“The Addison Advantage truly is about people, and about our sense of community,” said Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra. The Village of Addison is a community of 37,000 located in Chicago’s western suburbs. It boasts a vibrant and diverse population, along with its booming industrial, manufacturing and business base. Its prime location as a transportation hub and solid economic base also give Addison a distinct advantage. “From housing to employment, culture, business, schools, entertainment and recreation, the Addison Advantage is rooted in its rich history and people,” said Mayor Veenstra, who was elected in 2013. He and his family first moved to the village in 1973, and he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1992 and previous was the first chairman of the village’s Substance Responsibility Commission. “Addison offers a warm welcome to residential, business and industrial newcomers, with opportunities for everyone. When looking for a flourishing village in which to live, work, do business and play, the Addison Advantage shines.” Originally a farming community, the Village of Addison has grown by leaps and bounds during its 132-year history. From early settlers of German descent, to those of Italian heritage and more recently Latino, Indian, Polish and southeast Asian ancestry, new
residents have meant a steady trajectory supporting housing, employment and commercial growth. “Our people are first and foremost the heart of the Addison Advantage,” said Mayor Veenstra; many families are Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra second and third generation residents. lunches at school during the week. “Here you’ll find a But perhaps the most obvious spirit of collaboration and willingness example of cooperation pre-dates his of people to step up and lend a hand, or tenure as mayor, as the annual Mayor’s band together in support of a common Community Charity Ball enters its 26th cause.” year in 2016. ADDISON Business CASSIDY TIRE & SERVICE 200 S. Church, Addison (630) 620-2300 www.cassidytire.com History Cassidy Tire & Service is a family owned and operated business with founding roots dating back to Hugh Cassidy and his son, William, who first opened a livery service on Chicago’s near West Side in 1892, two decades after the Great Chicago Fire. The family patriarch centered his business on renting hearses, livery wagons and horse teams. By 1912, horse-drawn wagons were replaced by automobiles and William began to take notice of the wear and tear on tires as vehicles passed his 1227 W. Roosevelt Road location. He changed the company focus to hard tire repair. A nephew, Hugh Ahern, joined Cassidy Tire and led the company though the Great Depression years and during World War II. Sons Bill, Frank, James, Jack, Tom and Hugh Jr. helped open two new west suburban stores in the 1950s. By ELITE DENTISTRY 516 W. Lake St., Addison (630) 279-3333 elitedentistryaddison.com History Dr. Mohamed Waheed, DDS, provides general and cosmetic dentistry to patients of all ages at his Elite Dentistry practice. Since opening his doors in March 2015, the fledgling dental practice has grown exponentially. Dr. Waheed received his dental degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry at Chicago. Dedication to continuing education has always been a priority to Dr. Waheed; he is a member of the American Dental Association, the Illinois State Dental Society and the Chicago Dental Society. Today Dr. Waheed and his Elite Dentistry team provide a full spectrum of dental services to help patients achieve their distinctive dental dreams. Services include routine cleaning, deep cleaning 20
Today Cassidy Tire & Service is full-service auto and truck service center and an authorized dealer of Continental, General, Kumho and Toyo tires. Cassidy carries a wide variety of tires for passenger cars, light trucks, motor sport vehicles, off-road vehicles, landscape equipment and commercial vehicles. The fourth generation of Aherns – Rick,
Bryan, Melanie, Tom Jr. and Kristie – are at the helm guiding the area’s largest independent tire dealer. The scope of service is massive, ranging from retail and wholesale operations, commercial truck sales and service, 24-hour roadside truck service, audits of major leasing and construction fleets. In addition to tire sales and repair, basic services offered throughout the Chicagoland area include free tire pressure and alignment check, air filters to improve performance and fuel economy, alignments to prevent excess tire wear, battery replacement, brakes, coolant flushing, oil changes, suspension repair, wiper blades and tire pressure checks. “We often say William J. Cassidy would be amazed if he could see what we do today,” said KC Rohleder, a cousin working at the Addison headquarters location. With an annual $30-$40 million in sales, Cassidy Tire and its 160 employees are firmly positioned as industry leaders and ready to conquer the next 100 years.
and well care checkups, fillings, oral cancer screening, root canals, implants, crowns, cosmetic procedures including teeth whitening and Invisalign, pediatric care, sedation dentistry and surgical extractions. Patients are seen four days a week in newly renovated offices adjacent to Caputo’s Fresh Market. “We are firmly invested in the Addison community and frequently can be found at community events including career days at Addison Trail High School, chamber meetings, and green light events at Caputo’s where we’ve distributed free water and sports bottles,” Dr. Waheed said. Elite Dentistry draws families and patients of all ages from Addison and surrounding communities such as Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Bensenville and Carol Stream. Easy access and proximity to major transportation thoroughfares were prime factors for the young professional in establishing Elite Dentistry’s location. “We see ourselves as a distinctive fullservice dental practice, providing an array
of care and services often not found in one location,” Dr. Waheed said. He handles even the most challenging root canals and extractions, and specializes in partial and full arch implants. He also uses the latest technology to create dentures and partials that look natural and make it easier to eat and smile with confidence. Many people are surprised to learn complete sets and partials aren’t only for the elderly, Dr. Waheed said. Families with young children find Dr. Waheed a valued resource in explaining the importance of establishing a “dental home” (a place to go in times of pain or trauma), first visits, the importance of baby teeth, toddler tooth brushing tips, cleaning baby’s teeth, fluoride and toothpaste concerns, toothaches, thumb sucking, dental sealants and cavity prevention and care. Because oral health plays a major role in overall health, Dr. Waheed said, the focus on early preventive care, dental education, daily oral care and regular, ongoing dental care is vital.
1970, the company established its main location downtown and in 2006 Cassidy Tire moved to Addison, opened its headquarters and 100,000-square-foot warehouse, store No. 15, and added a second warehouse.

ADDISON Chamber History STRONG INDUSTRIAL ROOTS SPUR GROWTH From small pioneering shops to large corporate operations, the history of industrial and manufacturing growth in Addison is forged with deep roots. During the 1950s, as entrepreneurs bought lots, built early plants and grew their fledgling industrial business operations, one issue soon dominated the conversation – roads. With no concrete plans for an industrial district, truckers and area entrepreneurs soon found Industrial Road and Fullerton Road, local entrance roads in the unincorporated area, impassable. Poor road conditions forced truckers to park their vehicles on Addison Road and find creative ways to unload and transport cargo. The Addison Road Improvement Association formed in 1950 with a focus on improving roads conditions, accessibility and signage. Initial members – including Blackhawk Molding Co. Inc., a family-owned injection-molding shop established in 1949 – discussed topics such as whether roads should be graded and oiled or if factory owners should have roads blacktopped and split the costs. “Our company founder grew up in Addison and knew the location offered great advantages,” said Jeff Davis, operations director at the 70,000-square-foot facility that specializes in inventing and manufacturing proprietary products and is a pioneer in supplying plastic-injection-molded products to the dairy, bottled water and juice industries. “We remain an active

member of the chamber of commerce and over the years have had a strong working relationship with other area businesses and the village.” By July 1952, the group became known as the Addison Industrial Association and soon expanded its boundaries to encompass the entire area bounded by Route 53 on the west, Irving Park Road to the north, Route 83 to the east, and North Avenue (Route 64) to the south. Focus shifted as development and industrial expansion slowed and talk of annexing the industrial district to a local municipality began. Road conditions, stoplights, railroad track congestion at area entrances, street lighting, storm sewers, zoning ordinances, licensing, parking and arterial road designations all topped meeting agendas. Founding group members began exploring annexation issues with both the Village of Addison and Villa Park. In 1956, voters approved annexation to the Village of Addison. Over the years, efforts focused on improving public service to allow for an ample and reliable power supply, allocating space for additional parking, street illumination, the development of a safe storm sewer system, street paving and area access routes. In 1991, the Addison Chamber of Commerce and the Addison Industrial Association merged to form the Addison Association of Industry & Commerce. The new organization worked in cooperation with its members from both the commercial and industrial sectors to retain and develop business in Addison, and to represent business to local, county, state and national governmental agencies. In 1993, members voted to change the name to the Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The chamber now serves almost 300 members from within the community and neighboring municipalities. “Although the name has changed, the commitment of service to members and the business community of Addison as a whole remains the same,” said Bernadette LaRocca, executive director of the Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The chamber offers networking opportunities for members at monthly luncheon meetings, breakfast sessions and seminars with expert speakers, multi-chamber event and meetings, and two annual business-to-business EXPOs. Some of the social gatherings include after-hours events sponsored by members, an annual golf outing, holiday cocktail party and more. At the annual Student Honors Banquet, top Addison High School graduates are recognized and scholarships awarded. The chamber’s electronic updates provide information on legislative matters, business conditions, upcoming events and opportunities to advertise. In 2016, the Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry celebrates the 25th anniversary of the merger of the Addison Chamber of Commerce and the Addison Industrial Association.
