OUR SCHOOLS EDUCATING OUR YOUTH

A

rlington Heights has long valued quality education, and it shows in the dedication of our teachers, staff and administrators. Our schools, at every level, are top-notch and focus on supporting students throughout their academic journeys. A move to Arlington Heights is a move in the right direction for your child’s future. The Arlington Heights Public School District 25 includes seven elementary schools (K-5) and two middle schools (grades 6-8) that educate more than 5,550 students. A rigorous curriculum at every level produces students who are knowledgeable, competitive and ready to be global leaders in a variety of disciplines. Students are taught early to put such skills as STEM (science, tech, engineering and math), Digital Arts & Design and Communication Arts to use with state-of-the-art technology provided throughout the district. When students take the leap to high school, they attend one of the six schools within Township School District 214,

the state’s second largest high school district by enrollment. This district, which has more than 12,000 students, is a National Blue Ribbon School District. The district is also proud of Superintendent David Schuler, who recently received the distinguished 2018 National Superintendent of the Year honor from the American Association of School Administrators. In addition to the public-school offerings, there are many private institutions for pre-school, elementary, middle and high school youths. Young adults seeking a quality college education can achieve their goals at numerous colleges and universities nearby.

OUR PARK DISTRICT LIKE NONE OTHER

T

he Arlington Heights Park District, one of the oldest and largest in the region, has plenty of open spaces for the young and the young at heart to enjoy. Sure, we’re a little biased, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a park district with as many amenities as this one. For one, the district has 58 parks comprised of community parks, neighborhood parks, play lots, passive parks and linear parks. There are five outdoor swimming pools, five community centers, a cultural arts center, a senior center, two tennis clubs, two golf clubs, a driving range, a skate park, a dog park, three football fields, seven soccer fields, seven sand volleyball courts, more than 40 ball diamonds, 30 basketball courts, 42 playgrounds, 52 outdoor tennis courts, 16 outdoor iceskating rinks and 17 picnic areas. And, you can even rent a garden plot if you want one. The Olympic Indoor Swim Center is undergoing major renovations, which are expected to be completed in 2020 (in time to celebrate the building’s 50th anniversary). Renovations will include a new 53,000-square-foot addition to the existing building on Ridge Avenue. The park district’s crown jewel is the 50-acre detention lake, Lake Arlington, which has a two-mile walk/ run path around its perimeter and many new additions. Recent updates have included a fishing pier, a fountain, a multigenerational area with a picnic area/ shelter and game tables, a playground and an outdoor exercise area. Boat rentals are available seasonally. Just want to know where to ride your 18 Arlington Heights, IL ILARLBB19 design.indd 18

bike or take a stroll? The village’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission can help. It hosts community bike rides to point out the various paths.

Once a sticker is purchased, you will be able to purchase annual stickers through a mail-in order form that will be sent to you from the finance department. REFUSE COLLECTION Once-a-week refuse collection is provided per the village’s contract with Groot Recycling and Waste Services, or you can elect to have twice-a-week collection. All single-family residences in Arlington Heights are required to maintain a current account with Groot. Refuse, recycling and yard waste is picked up once a week. Residents have the option for twice-a-week service; if desired; call (800) 244‑1977. All single-family residences are provided with a 65-gallon cart for recycling and a 95-gallon refuse cart for garbage. There is a one-time option to change, at no charge, the size of the carts. collection day is Monday. If you live south of Oakton Street and west of Arlington Heights Road, your collection day is Tuesday. If you live north of Oakton Street and east of Arlington Heights Road, your collection day is Thursday. If you live south of Oakton Street and east of Arlington Heights Road, your collection day is Friday. Residents cannot use their own garbage cans for placing refuse at the curb. Yard waste must be placed in 30-gallon paper bags. Please check Groot’s website (www. groot.com/waste-management-chicago/ village-of-arlington-heights) for pricing information and directions on how to dispose of yard waste, refuse and recyclables. Call Groot to establish your service: (800) 244‑1977. WATER SERVICE Water service must be established by calling water billing at (847) 368‑5520. The rate charged for the Lake Michigan water and related sewer service is $7.66 per 1,000 gallons and you will be billed once every two months for the service. When setting up your service, be sure to inquire about the automatic billing payment program. The village has converted to an electronic water meter reading system; only the inside meter attached to the water supply measures and records water consumption. OVERNIGHT PARKING Overnight parking on village streets between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. is prohibited unless you receive special permission from the police department. If you or your guests anticipate the need to park on the street overnight, call the police department at (847) 368‑5300. SEWER LINE If the sewer line of your home is not functioning, please call the public works department at (847) 368‑5800, weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A village

employee will inspect the sewer main to determine whether the problem is the village’s responsibility. After hours, or on weekends, call the police desk at (847) 368‑5300. If the problem is the resident’s service line, a licensed and bonded plumbing company should be contacted at once to see if the sewer is functioning properly. A resident’s service line runs from their home to the point of connection to the village’s sewer main.
