or many years, Anson County was known primarily to North Carolinians as, “that place you drive through on the way to the coast,” or, “that place with the good peach ice cream.” Fairly or unfairly, it was often perceived as a long stretch of open highway with a few sleepy towns, fast food restaurants and gas stations catering to beach traffic. But that perception is rapidly changing, as a series of circumstances have converged to position Anson County as the new hot growth corridor in the Charlotte region. Here are five things you need to know: 1. ANSON COUNTY IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK The distance from the town hall in Peachland to Center City Charlotte is just 40 miles. Numerous traffic lights and slow truck traffic on US Highway 74 in Union County currently make it an hour and 15 minute drive, but when the Monroe Expressway opens in late 2018, the drive from western Anson County to Charlotte will clock in at around 45 minutes, similar to that of other exurban Charlotte counties. Whether you want to attend an occasional Panthers or Hornets game, shop at the world-class Southpark Mall, catch a flight from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport or even make a daily commute into the city, Anson County is just a short expressway drive away. 2. ANSON COUNTY HAS AN AMAZINGLY DIVERSE ECONOMY The county has maintained a strong agricultural identity since its founding in 1750, and that heritage is alive and well today; but Anson also boasts one of the highest percentages of manufacturing workers in the state with a particular emphasis on high-tech industrial jobs like advanced metalworking, performance textiles and forestry/wood products. As the county seat, Wadesboro is home to a large and growing number of professionals including lawyers, accountants, surveyors and insurance and financial services representatives. Whatever your experience level or area of expertise, there’s opportunity for you in Anson County. 3. HOMES AND LAND IN ANSON COUNTY ARE STILL A GREAT VALUE As recently as 2016, the county was awash in For Sale signs and motivated sellers. A mini sales boom over the past 18 months has reduced that inventory significantly, but good deals can still be found, especially for fans of home “fix-up” shows who are willing to do some historic renovation. Early and mid-20th century homes are available in Wadesbroro’s historic district and in many of the smaller towns at prices starting well under $100,000. Looking to build? Lakefront and suburban lots are available for a fraction of what you would pay for similar property on Lake Norman or Lake Wylie, and rural land typically sells for less than

$4,000 per acre. If you wish you’d bought in Huntersville, Denver, Mooresville, Concord or Rock Hill 25 years ago, Anson County offers similar opportunities today. 4. THERE’S PLENTY TO DO IN ANSON COUNTY Whether you’re a patron of the arts or an outdoor enthusiast, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Anson County. The award-winning Ansonia Theatre is a beautifully restored mid-20th century venue that hosts more than a dozen shows each year, everything from locally-produced plays to national musical acts, while the Rocky and Pee Dee Rivers form the county’s northern and eastern boundaries and offer more than 30 miles of wild river paddling and fishing. Local artists and craftsmen display their work at the Drake Gallery, while just about every weekend some sort of festival or community event takes place in one of the counties seven distinctly different towns: Ansonille, Lilesville, McFarlan, Morven, Peachland, Polkton and Wadesboro. 5. ANSON COUNTY WELCOMES ENTREPRENEURS Startup businesses will find a welcoming home in Anson. From Facade Grants for Main Street storefronts to Bootstrap and Enterprise Grants for new and growing businesses, Anson County provides strong financial support for entrepreneurs seeking a place to set up shop, and the Small Business Center at South Piedmont Community College offers technical assistance to help new business owners thrive. Anson’s practical and hands-off approach to government means less needless regulation and bureaucracy than in some of the region’s larger communities, while a new coworking program in Uptown Wadesboro helps capital-starved small businesses develop community and share experiences while providing the support and training needed to launch their ventures to a new level. SHOPPING, DINING & ACCOMMODATIONS RETAIL & DINING Anson County offers the variety of shopping and dining options typical for a rural area. The majority of retail establishments are located on the US Highway 74 “Strip” between Polkton and Lilesville, and in the historic Uptown Wadesboro central business district. Dining choices include multiple fast food outlets, sit-down “home cooking” restaurants and fine dining establishments. Although a variety of different types of food are represented, like most of North Carolina the area is especially well-known for its barbecue and “fish camp” dishes. The largest retail store in the county is Walmart, located on the US 74 Strip between Wadesboro and Polkton. TSC, Goodies, Family Dollar, CVS and Dollar General are also located on the Strip along with several smaller specialty stores. In Uptown Wadesboro, a locally-owned

THINGS TO DO

There are lots of opportunities to explore Anson County. For the outdoor enthusiast, the Rocky and Pee Dee Rivers form the northern and eastern boundaries of the county, providing more than 30 miles of wild river paddling and fishing, while the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge offers 8,500 pristine acres of hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching and special permit hunting. Little Park offers natural hiking trails, a pond for fishing, a swimming pool for the summer months, baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts and a playground with a spacious picnic area. Wadesboro City Pond also offers great fishing opportunities along with kayaking, a family picnic area and a playground. If you are looking for history, the Anson County Historical Society has you covered. There are four museums full of great finds documenting the history of the county. You can arrange a private tour or schedule a group event with them. If the theatre is your passion, then you will most definitely want to see one of the shows at the Ansonia Theatre. They offer a variety of programs throughout the year, along with a kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theatre camp and musical camp during the summer months.

A COMMUNITY RICH IN WORSHIP Religion plays an important role in Anson County. Residents and newcomers enjoy many opportunities to join the church of their choice and support activities that benefit the community. Many Anson congregations have a long and rich history. The oldest existing congregation is Rocky River Baptist Church near Polkton, founded in 1776. Today, Anson County has some 80 churches that represent a variety of denominations. Five uptown Wadesboro churches participate in the Interchurch Council. Those participating are First Baptist, Sacred Heart Mission Catholic, Calvary Episcopal, First United Methodist and First Presbyterian. They sponsor the Anson Crisis Ministry on South Rutherford in Wadesboro. The crisis ministry operates a food bank and distributes used clothing and household items to the needy. In addition, Feed My Lambs on U.S. Highway 74, west of Wadesboro, maintains a food bank and runs a thrift store at their location. The Interchurch Council also holds a community-wide Thanksgiving worship service and rotates noon services during Holy Week preceding Easter and Sunrise Service on Easter. In all, there are over 80 churches representing a diversity of denominations in Anson County.

EDUCATION ANSON COUNTY SCHOOLS Anson County Schools serve students by providing a high-quality public education for all children. Students have the option of attending elementary school in their home community. Elementary Schools (grades K-5) include Ansonville, Lilesville, Morven, PeachlandPolkton, Wadesboro Elementary and Wadesboro Primary. Students in grades 6-8 attend Anson Middle School in Wadesboro. Upon entering 9th grade, students apply to attend one of our high schools. They may apply to attend Anson High School in Wadesboro selecting from a number of career pathways or Anson County Early College High School at South Piedmont Community College in Polkton. Rigorous curriculum offerings are provided at each grade level allowing students to experience continuous learning as they progress through the grades. Many students earn academic credits allowing them to graduate with a high school diploma along with associate degrees and/or workforce credentials establishing a foundation for students to attend college or enter the workforce. Each school in Anson County has earned passing performance grades based on the North Carolina Public Schools Accountability System. Additionally, a significant number of advances in student academic growth is documented within the accountability system. Anson County Schools have many alumni who are productive citizens experiencing success in their chosen career pathway. Alumni represent ACS across the world making us proud due to their phenomenal contributions to society. ATRIUM HEALTH ANSON Like many community hospitals, Anson Community Hospital was an important and critical resource for Wadesboro and the surrounding region since opening in 1954. But by 2012, it was approaching the end of its useful life and needed considerable reinvestment, but like many rural hospitals the daily patient census was low. However, there was a significant need in the community for care. A new approach was needed. Atrium Health, formerly Carolinas HealthCare System, made the important decision to reimagine and redevelop the facility in such a way that it would improve the health outcomes of the community while being a long-term, financially sustainable solution. The result is an innovative, community-focused care delivery model tailor-made for the region. The new facility is built around primary care and prevention but incorporates an emergency department, a core team of care providers, and telemedicine for specialist access. The goal of the new $20 million 43,000-square-foot hospital was to eliminate waste and improve flow, patient privacy and patient experience

for the 25,000 people served in Anson County and surrounding areas. The facility consists of 15 inpatient beds, 10 emergency bays, an operating room, outpatient behavioral health space, community education room, traditional ancillary services, such as radiology, lab, and pharmacy, and a patient-centered primary care practice co-located in the emergency department. Overall, the model increased access to care, improved care coordination and lowered the cost of care. “The health system used a community-focused care model to restructure and provide care in Anson County by creating a new hospital model equipped with the services and capabilities necessary to meet patient needs,” said Michael Lutes, president, Southeastern Division at Atrium Health. “We right sized clinical spaces and modernized the care environment which has been a positive change for the community.” In addition to the new hospital, which opened in 2014, Atrium Health debuted a brand-new mobile health unit in early 2018 to serve Anson County with regularly scheduled visits to community centers, shopping centers and other general community settings to offer community residents diagnostics, screenings and education. The Anson mobile unit is equipped for patient care with two exam rooms, a work space for patient navigation and data entry, scales and a wheel chair lift. The Anson Mobile Unit has the capacity to perform blood pressure, glucose, weight, body mass index measurements and provides referrals to appropriate resources at Atrium Health and other county health resources.
