MAYOR’S WELCOME Our town has the honor of being the oldest settled community in Kane County, dating back to 1833. Batavia is both proud of its memorable retail and industrial history, and excited about all the opportunities that today’s business inventory has to offer. BATAVIA DEPOT MUSEUM

Last year, the Batavia Historical Society launched the Depot Museum Expansion Fundraising Campaign, embarking on the most ambitious improvement to the Batavia Depot Museum since its founding in 1975. The Historical Society has a five-year plan in place to raise two million dollars, and has a commitment from the Batavia Park District to cover any costs above that amount and to maintain the Depot Museum for future generations. The Chicago Burlington and Quincy Depot has been a picturesque feature of Batavia since its construction in 1854, and it became Batavia’s museum in 1975. The Depot Museum has grown as steadily as Batavia itself. Originally, the museum exhibits were only on the first floor. In the early 1990s, the lower level was converted from the Depot Pond’s warming house to exhibit space. In 2000, the Gustafson Research Center was added, giving the archives a home and researchers a comfortable place to work. The proposed addition will double the museum’s space, and is designed to the unique Gothic Revival style of the historic depot. To make room for the building, the museum campus will expand – the CB&Q Caboose, Coffin Bank and US Wind Engine and Pump Water Tower will be relocated to the west side of the Fox River Trail. New landscaping will incorporate the green spaces adjacent to the

path, creating a place for relaxation. Upon entering the museum, visitors will be greeted with an airy, light-filled space,

which will take full advantage of the view of the Depot Pond. The hall will also feature an expanded Batavia-themed gift shop and information about where to eat, shop and have fun in Batavia. A new, 800-square-foot special exhibit hall will feature a variety of larger scale changing exhibits, and allow the flexibility of having meetings or presentations in the depot. The Depot Museum has a tradition of being community built and supported. When the building was moved to its present location on Houston Street, it’s estimated that half the town contributed to the effort. BATAVIA MAINSTREET

With the help of dedicated volunteers, the Batavia MainStreet program is the pulse that pumps revitalization into Batavia’s downtown area. Batavia MainStreet promotes economic development for the downtown by working with property owners and area brokers to help retain and recruit businesses. Working with the city, the Chamber of Commerce and the Batavia Park District, MainStreet organizes a number of events throughout the year including an annual block party and Taste of Batavia, a Halloween-themed weekend called BatFest, Cocktails in the Park, Oktoberfest and Second Fridays in downtown Batavia. The nonprofit organization provides community services like the community garden, the Saturday morning farmers market and the Artisan Collective, a showcase for artists and crafters to display and sell their wares. Batavia MainStreet also partners with the city’s Environmental Commission to put on the annual Green Fair on the Fox and with the city’s Bicycle Commission to promote Bike Batavia. BATAVIA PARK DISTRICT Serving the community of Batavia for more than 50 years, the Batavia Park District manages nearly 400 acres at 40 different sites throughout the city. The most centrally located park, the Batavia Riverwalk, is a gathering place for the community with over 50 annual special events. It’s a place where the public can listen to a free concert, attend a festival, participate in a chili cook-off, host a wedding, take a paddle boat ride or just enjoy the beauty of the Fox River. Across from the Riverwalk is the Depot Museum, a park district site that is dedicated to the preservation of Batavia’s history. It is located next to the Fox River Trail, a 43 mile system of bike paths along both sides of the scenic river for biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. In addition to neighborhood parks, the district maintains Hall Quarry Beach, a skateboard park, the Bark Park, 10 tennis courts, 13 ball fields, 13 basketball courts, an outdoor seasonal skating rink and a disc golf course. With a commitment to “provide fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that enrich the lives of residents” the park district offers nearly 2,000 programs each year to 94,000 participants. The district also boasts over 8,000 logged hours from a dedicated pool of volunteers, saving the district more than $75,000 annually. EDUCATION BATAVIA SCHOOL DISTRICT 101

Helping students learn and grow in all aspects of their development is the mission of Batavia Public School District 101. There are literally thousands of ways this mission is carried out inside and outside of classrooms. Here are just a few examples: In partnership with Waubonsee Community College, Batavia High School now offers 10 dual-credit courses. Forty-three percent of students in the Class of 2018 earned college scholarships totaling $12 million, and 104 students from that same class were named Illinois State Scholars.

Now in its fourth year, the INCubator Entrepreneurship Program at Batavia High School gives students the opportunity to develop a real product or service and pitch it to business professionals for investment dollars. Every year, 50 students in grades 3-8 from BPS101 have the opportunity to enroll in the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on Aurora University’s campus. This unique learning environment is designed for students with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. BPS101’s tuition-free preschool program offers an academic and socialemotional curriculum aligned with the district’s curriculum and Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards. BATAVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Since 1882, the Batavia Public Library has operated in six different downtown locations. In 2002, when the library moved to its present location, Batavians gathered downtown and formed a human chain between the previous library and the present one. Books were handed off from one person to the next to symbolize a library for and of the community. Today, the 54,000-square-foot library has a collection of more than 220,000 items – books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, and more – available for checkout. Special programming for adults, teens and children is available throughout the year. Batavians can obtain a library card by presenting a photo ID and proof of residency at the checkout desk. For those who are homebound, the library offers home delivery service. Reference librarians help patrons access materials, both within the library and online. The centrally located library houses reading areas for all, from a quiet area in front of a massive fireplace to the toddler play area on the lower level. A café at the main entrance offers a place where patrons can grab a cup of coffee or a quick lunch. Some take their lunch down to the Reading Garden, an area especially popular in the spring and summer. The library is the center of the community, not only for the services it offers, but also for lectures, book discussions, art exhibits and entertainment. For more information, visit www. Bob Bonifas’s first job was at Art’s Bi-Lo Supermarket, the grocery store owned by his dad. Pressured by competition from giant retail chains, Bi-Lo no longer exists. But the building it occupied on Aurora’s North Side is now one of four on a 25-acre campus that houses a thriving business that Bonifas went on to start, Alarm Detection Systems. ADS provides fire alarms, burglar alarms, closed-circuit TV and access control systems to businesses and residential customers. As ADS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, it has 35,000 subscribers in Illinois, Wisconsin and Colorado. Now 81, Bonifas is still its CEO and comes to work every day along with 300 other employees. “There’s no magic” about staying in business for half a century and growing into a company that brings in $50 million a year in revenue, Bonifas said. “It just takes hard work.” “It took ADS 10 years to do the first million in gross revenue. Having a college education would have helped, especially if I had studied electronics.” But his 12th-grade education at Marmion Academy, plus hiring lots of other hard-working people who do know a lot about electronics, made it work. “Very few start-up companies make it to this size and remain a family business,” said CFO Terry Olah, who began with ADS part-time in the 1970s when he was an accounting student at Waubonsee Community

College. Not only does the Bonifas family still own it, but four of Bonifas’s five children also hold executive positions. His brother, sister-in-law, nephew and grandson work for the company as well. The company maintains two 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year monitoring stations that receive a message whenever an ADS fire or burglar alarm goes off. Those manning the station then notify the 911 center in that locale and the owner himself. Besides adding new subscribers, ADS has grown by buying up 65 competing companies. Those include Safe Systems Inc., the largest family-owned security company in Colorado, with 80 employees. ADS is now one of the 25 biggest independently owned companies in its industry. In their third generation of ownership by the Dempsey family, BEI Properties continues to rehabilitate, maintain and manage real estate. In 2017, BEI Properties expanded by acquiring Miscella Real Estate of Geneva. Operating as a boutique residential real estate firm centered on client care that goes beyond the “big box” approach, over 91 percent of Miscella’s business is earned though referrals. Today, Gerry Dempsey is chairman of the board, while his son, Austin Dempsey, is CEO and Dan Stellato is president. Nancie Golnick Dorjath was destined by her childhood to start a law firm specializing in senior-citizen issues. Her husband David, now working beside her in the firm, said “both of us grew up in multi-generation households. We had grandparents living with us. Nancie is Polish. Her Busia, as she called her grandmother, developed dementia in her later years and also went through all the funds she had accumulated.
