Our city motto is often referred to as “THE CITY OF ENERGY” and I think you will quickly come to realize Batavia is a community that is friendly and full of productive people using their personal energy to make our town a great place to live and do business. Our town has the honor of being the oldest settled community in Kane County, dating back to 1833. Batavia is both proud of its memorable retail and industrial history and excited about all the opportunities that today’s business inventory has to offer. With this publication, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce presents a dynamic and informative view of the wide variety of retail shopping, industrial innovations and professional business services that can be found around town. Batavia is the hometown of such nationally known facilities as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which is an internationally recognized research facility for high-energy research, and Mooseheart, which houses the century old home of the legendary “Child City & School” of the Moose Lodge, as well as the world headquarters for the commendable organization. The city has much to be proud about when it comes time to tell what is going on within our boundaries. I am confident that you will find Batavia a city full of unique people, interesting customs and enjoying one of the richest historical heritages among Illinois communities. History The Batavia Depot Museum opened in 1975 as a cooperative effort between the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Historical Society. The Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad Depot was the first-of-its-kind built in 1854, and is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, the city’s past comes alive through exhibits detailing the history of rail transportation, manufacture of windmills, agriculture, banking, commerce and a brief stay by Mary Todd Lincoln at Bellevue Place. Saving the Depot in the early 1970s was an effort that involved all Batavians. Though contributions and generous matching from Furnas, $31,000 was raised to move the historic structure from its original location at the corner of Van Buren and Webster street to its current location on Houston street, a total of nine blocks, one hill and one bridge. Moving day, Oct. 11, 1973, was such an event, even school children were let out of class to see the Depot traveling to its new home. Over the years, the Depot has increased the number of exhibits and space with the addition of the Gustafson Research Center in 2000. In March 2017, the Batavia Historical Society launched the Depot Expansion Project, with the goal of adding a new, modern exhibit space, storage and reception area to welcome Batavians and introduce visitors to the city’s rich history. Batavia MainStreet With the help of dedicated volunteers, the Batavia MainStreet program is the pulse that pumps revitalization into Batavia’s downtown by working with property owners and area brokers to help retain and recruit businesses. Working with the City of Batavia, The Batavia Chamber of Commerce, and the Batavia Park District, MainStreet organizes a number of events throughout the year including the annual Block Party and Taste of Batavia, a Halloweenthemed child-focused event called BatFest, Cocktails in the Park, Oktoberfest and Second Fridays in Downtown Batavia. The nonprofit organization provides community services like the Saturday morning farmers market on North River Street complete with food stamp accessibility, the Artisan Collective, a showcase for local artisans to display and sell their wares, and everyday community information. Batavia MainStreet also partners with the city’s Environmental Commission to put on the annual WellBatavia Event and with the city’s Bike Commission to promote Bike Batavia. Batavia Park District Serving the community of Batavia for more than 50 years, the Batavia Park District manages nearly 400 acres at 40 sites throughout the city. The most centrally located park, the Batavia Riverwalk, is a gathering place for the community with over 50 annual special events. It’s a place where the public can listen to a free concert, attend a festival, participate in a chili cook-off, host a wedding, take a paddle boat ride or just enjoy the beauty of the Fox River. Across from the Riverwalk is the Depot Museum, a park district site that is dedicated to the preservation of Batavia’s history. It is located next to the Fox River Trail, a 43 mile system of bike paths along both sides of the scenic river for biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. In addition to neighborhood parks, the district maintains Hall Quarry Beach, a skateboard park, the Bark Park, 10 tennis courts, 13 ball fields, 13 basketball courts, an outdoor seasonal skating rink and a disc golf course. With a commitment to “provide fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that enrich the lives of residents” the park district offers nearly 2,000 programs each year to 94,000 participants. The district also boasts over 8,000 logged hours from a dedicated pool of volunteers, saving the district more than $75,000 annually. Batavia Public Library The Batavia Public Library is centrally located in downtown Batavia. The 54,000-square-foot library has a collection of more than 242,000 items – books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines and more – available for checkout. The “more” includes downloadable and streaming eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, music and TV shows, as well as bicycle locks and an extensive specialty cake pan collection. The library houses reading areas for all, from a quiet area in front of a massive fireplace to the toddler play area on the lower level. A café at the main entrance offers a place where patrons can grab a cup of coffee or a quick lunch. Some take their lunch down to the outdoor Reading Garden, an area especially popular in the spring and summer. The library is the center of the community, not just for the services it offers; but also for book discussions, art exhibits, lectures, concerts and entertainment. Special programming for adults, teens and children is available throughout the year. Batavians can obtain a library card by presenting a photo ID and proof of residency at the check-out desk. Education The Batavia Public School District measures success in many different ways, including academic indicators, the growing number of opportunities for students and staff and its national recognition. Student survey results indicate they feel safe, connected and supported. The school district focuses on three core strategies so that all students receive a high-quality education, take ownership of their learning and are prepared for what’s next. In short, the school district ensures all students are, “Always learning. Always growing.” In November 2017, the Board of Education voted to commission a facilities committee. The district put out a call for volunteers, which resulted in a group of 17 staff and community members who started the process of developing a master facilities plan for 2020 and beyond. After a year of studying, touring school district facilities, analyzing and assessing, the committee reported their findings and recommendations to the Board of Education. This was just the start of the process. The entire Batavia community is invited to join in the Building our Future Together initiative. Over the next 12 months, the school district will engage in a series of events, broken into phases, where the district will seek input from the community and plan with the community to prepare for the future. The Holmstad Covenant Living at the Holmstad, located on 38 acres in Batavia, has a venerable history in Kane County. A ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church, it was opened in the mid1970s and it has been growing ever since. Representatives of the church emigrated from Sweden in the 1800s and quickly took it upon themselves to open homes for both children and seniors of “no means,” finally making their way to Batavia to open The Holmstad in the last quarter of the 20th century, explained Lindsey Bruni, sales director for The Holmstad. Today the Holmstad boasts approximately 280 residential living units, 60 catered living, assisted living, memory care and both long-term nursing care and short-term rehabilitative care units. Even non-residents are welcome to apply for care in the short-term rehab units, Bruni said. “Most of our residents lived in the Fox Valley area or move here to be close to their children,” she explained. “Many come here knowing they will have very vibrant lives where they are able to be involved and make an impact in their community. Some residents choose to be involved in volunteer programs like the local food pantry, intergenerational programs,

and participating in our annual bazaar featuring resident artists.” In their free time residents take part in a variety of outings: boat tours, theater trips, museum visits, bicycle trips and more. On campus they also enjoy a full fitness center which is open 24/7, an indoor swimming pool used for water aerobics and open swim, a steam room, sauna and a therapy pool. Orange Home Services Elburn-based Orange Home Services is one of the premier heating and air conditioning companies in the Fox Valley, serving homes and small businesses since 2010.
