Boone County Museum of History The mission of the Boone County Museum of History is to stimulate interest in Boone County history through education, research and preservation of artifacts and archival materials. With exhibits updated on an annual basis, the museum truly offers something for everyone. Come see the newly renovated interactive gallery of local flora, fauna and geology in the Melvin and Mildred Banks Gallery of Boone County Conservation. Other features of the museum include a variety of horse-drawn vehicles, as well as antique cars including the first Plymouth that rolled off the Chrysler assembly line. Your visit to the museum will include a midcentury modern living room featuring artifacts and information about Judi Ford’s Miss America win, and a reproduction Victorian parlor. The museum also highlights the history of National Sewing Machine Company, a 1950s diner, and even a complete two-story 1840s era Boone County pioneer cabin. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plan your next event in the Grand Gallery, or stop by the Research Center and Community Classroom to browse the archives!

Edward’s Apple Orchard For the past 50 years, thousands of guests from across northern Illinois flock to Edward’s Apple Orchard to enjoy a taste of autumn. Visitors can pick apples, pumpkins and raspberries; visit the Apple Barn to shop for a number of fall treats; or enjoy lunch at the Cider Mill. And don’t forget to take home a dozen tasty cider donuts. The Apple Orchard is open from late August through Thanksgiving.

Lindberg Pumpkin Patch Under new ownership in 2015, this pumpkin patch has a little bit of everything. Families can enjoy old-fashioned wagon rides, a petting zoo, face painting and hands-on classes like taffy making and pumpkin carving. The patch also hosts one of the largest pumpkins in the world, standing at over 10 feet tall. The cafe and bakery serve classic autumn treats like caramel apples and pumpkin pies. There are also plenty of special events throughout the fall season.

McEachran Homestead Winery As the only winery in Boone County, McEachran Homestead offers a unique wine tasting experience for visitors and local residents alike. The McEachran Homestead was settled in 1857 by John McEachran, the great-great-grandfather of Herb Greenlee, the current owner. McEachran immigrated to northern Illinois from Scotland and settled

in what was known then as the Argyle Scottish Settlement. The McEachran Homestead is officially recognized by the State of Illinois as a Sesquicentennial Farm. Since the winery opened, the vineyard has doubled to 1,000 vines, which includes 19 varieties of grapes, over two acres of property. The original farm of 160 acres has been expanded to 285 acres with corn and soybeans as the main crops. Eleven acres are dedicated to 19 varieties of grapes, raspberries and fruit trees, all of which are meticulously tended, then handcrafted into cold-climate grape and fruit wines. The winery is open year-round. Tours are available for guests to learn about the different types of wine varieties and how viticulture and production aspects influence the flavor of McEachran Homestead’s wines. Tours also offer insight into the pruning, tending and nurturing of the vineyards and surrounding gardens. Groups can sample a variety of cold-climate grape and seasonal fruit wines made on-site.

The Keen Age Center The Boone County Council on Aging provides a variety of programs to older adults and their caregivers that help enrich and improve their quality of life. Programs include public transportation, medical car escort, nutrition, outreach, in-home care, computer lab, information and assistance, education, recreation, Memory Café, Dementia Friendly Community and volunteer opportunities. The council’s headquarters is the Keen Age Center, 2141 Henry Luckow Ln., which serves as headquarters for the professional staff and volunteers for all services provided by the organization, as well as a recreational and meeting site for older adults and caregivers.

Poplar Grove Airport and Wings & Wheels Museum Pilots from all over the world stop at a small airport in Boone County for the chance to step back in time and enjoy grassroots aviation. Visitors come from nearly every state in the country, as well as Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. In 2016, there were even visitors from China and Russia.

This pre-World War II museum focuses on the aviation and automobile industries as they grew together in the early 20th century. Exhibits feature vintage airplanes and automobiles. The floor layout changes up to three times a year to accommodate seasonal exhibits and to keep the layout fresh.

The Poplar Grove Airport is a privately owned, public-use airport that was started in 1972 by Dick Thomas, a retired dairy farmer. When Thomas died in 1994, his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Tina, bought the airport, which was home to 40 airplanes, a flight school and a maintenance shop. This led to the development of Bel-Air Estates Fly-in community in 1997. Four years later, the lots were sold out. Today there are 100 homes with airport taxiway access, 40 without access and 39 townhomes. Over 400 airplanes are based at the airport, which has a thriving flight school and a nationally recognized maintenance facility. In 2015, it was named the top Privately Owned Airport in Illinois. In 2017, Steve and Tina Thomas were inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame. In 1997, an interest in vintage aviation led to the creation of the Poplar Grove Aviation Education Association and the Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum. The education association is a nonprofit organization developed to preserve early transportation artifacts and promote education in the transportation fields. It is funded through memberships, sponsorships and donations. In 2019, the museum, along with the EAA Chapter 1414 based at Poplar Grove Airport, received the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame Spirit of Flight Award.

The museum is currently involved in a joint project with EAA Chapter 1414 to build a from-scratch, planes-built flying replica of the 1918 Curtiss Jenny 4ND aircraft. It is scheduled for completion in 2020, and the work in progress is open to museum visitors. In 2018, the museum youth group, Youth Exploring Aviation for ages 15-20, completed a 10-year project restoring a 1941 Aeronca Chief with the oversight of the museum’s restoration team. This plane was originally owed by aviation pioneer Fred Machesney, and had one time been owned by our airport founder Dick Thomas. It is now airworthy and back in the air. A new exhibit opening in June 2019 features Dick Thomas along with Fred Machesney and the contributions these two men made to the aviation community in northern Illinois. Another exhibit features the growth of the airline industry with a special collection of vintage stewardess uniforms. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, April through September, as well as by appointment. Field trips for students, summer camps, lectures and tours are available throughout the season. A variety of fundraising events are held, including a Detective Dinner in October, a holiday wine tasting in November and Santa at the Museum in December. In August, the airport hosts a fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast sponsored by the Poplar Grove Lions Club, which is the Lions’ biggest fund-raiser every year.

Recreation When it comes to recreation, there’s plenty to do right here in Boone County. Let’s start with golf. Swan Hills Golf Course, 2600 Gustafson Rd., Belvidere, opened in 1995 and offers one of the Midwest’s most desirable courses to play, with 168 acres of meticulously maintained fairways and greens and a completely tree-lined property. A creek runs through Swanhills and comes into play on several holes along with three ponds that challenge the accuracy of any golfer. The course has 16 sand bunkers that demand a little skill or luck. Number 8 is the course’s signature hole, nestled in a stand of trees, a creek just in front of the tees and all along the right. Beaver Creek Golf Course, 19619 Le Roy Center Rd., Capron, is a good challenge for golfers of all abilities. The course opened in 1997 on 60 acres in rural Boone County. The nine-hole course has a total yardage of 3,033 yards with a creek winding throughout the course that comes into play on five of the nine holes. There are four sand traps and large greens. Beaver Creek has four holes over 350 yards. Timber Pointe Golf Club, 5750 Woodstock Rd., Poplar Grove, is one of the most popular golf courses in northern Illinois. Situated on 160 acres, the course has five sets of tees on each hole, bent grass tees and greens, bluegrass fairways, 40 acres of established timber, 50 bunkers, four areas of water including a wildlife pond with cattails and plenty of prairie grasses, native grasses and wildflowers. There’s also a golf shop, practice facilities and The Grille restaurant. In addition to great golf, Boone County offers many types of parks and recreation from a simple stroll or bike ride down the Long Prairie Trail, a border-to-border, 12-mile trail, to a cool and inviting swim at Belvidere Park’s William Grady Pool, which even has a separate, gated toddler pool.

The Boone County Conservation District provides educational and recreational programs and special events year-round. Conservation areas, throughout the county offer opportunities for recreational activities such as bicycling, hiking, wildlife observation, canoeing/kayaking, picnicking, hunting and fishing. The Autumn Pioneer Festival and 1800s Holiday Walk living history events showcase Boone County history and are free to the public. The Roger D. Gustafson Nature Center is at 603 N. Appleton Rd. in Belvidere.

Enjoy the Rivers Edge Recreation Center, which offers four recreation rooms, a full-size gym and a 35-foot-high climbing wall. Belvidere Park offers 105 acres containing six shelters, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts as well as ball diamonds, playgrounds and a fishing pier. The Belvidere Park District has a Special Recreation Center dedicated to its Northlands Association for Special Recreation program, which helps residents with special needs to be able to have recreation in their lives. The Riverside Ice Arena is located within Doty Park in downtown Belvidere. Education Boone County is served by two districts, both of which exemplify the best in public education. Parents are encouraged to become involved the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s educational system and communicate openly with teachers and school administrators. Belvidere Community School District #100 provides a quality education to more than 8,000 students from pre-kindergarten to graduation. The district is home to five elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and one STEM academy. To accommodate and challenge all levels and types of learners, the Belvidere School District also offers special magnet programs that focus on a particular subject area or skill. In the Dual Language Program offered at Lincoln and Seth Whitman Elementary Schools, native English and native Spanish speakers learn alongside one another. Instruction in all core subject areas is given in both languages. Students enter the dual language program in their kindergarten year and exit at the end of fifth grade. At the end of the program, students will be bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. Washington Academy, the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only K-8 school, offers a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum. It houses three science labs, one STEM lab, four technology classrooms and two library media centers. STEM students have daily experiences with science, math at least an hour a day, 125 minutes weekly in technology classes and daily project-based learning. For middle school students, Project Lead the Way offers an activity-, project- and problem-based curriculum. Students apply classroom

concepts in real-world situations to identify problems and find unique solutions. Through a partnership with Rock Valley College, high school students can get a jump on their college education through participation in the Running Start program. Qualified students attend classes at Rock Valley College during their junior and senior years and receive dual credits that meet the requirements of a high school diploma and an associate degree simultaneously. Students do not pay for tuition at Rock Valley College and can return to their high school at the end of the day to participate in after-school athletics and extracurricular activities. Dual credit courses are offered on-site at each high school. Both high schools also offer 16 different advanced placement courses for students to enroll in. North Boone Community Unit School District 200 serves approximately 1,650 students in preschool through high school in the villages of Caledonia, Capron and Poplar Grove, as well as the northern tier of unincorporated Boone County. North Boone schools are recognized as accredited schools by the Illinois State Board of Education. The mission of the North Boone educational community is to provide students with exceptional experiences that continuously develop their minds and characters, fostering lifelong learning and responsible citizenship. Last year alone there were 739 single family dwellings sold in Boone County. That’s a 5% increase over the previous year with the same type of growth in 2017 compared to 2016. Workforce Development Boone County is a modest-sized county with a population near 54,000. Belvidere, the largest city in Boone County, makes up for over half the population. Boone County is part of the Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area Employment in the Rockford statistical area remains strong and diverse with an available workforce of over 174,000. The Workforce Connection is a partnership of state and federally funded employment and training programs and educational entities committed to providing a workforce that meets the needs of the business community, now and in the future. FCA US LLC is a North American automaker based in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It designs, manufactures and sells or distributes vehicles under the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, FIAT and Alfa Romeo brands, as well as the SRT performance designation. The company also distributes Mopar and Alfa Romeo parts and accessories. FCA US is building upon the historic foundations of Chrysler Corp., established in 1925 by industry visionary Walter P. Chrysler, and Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT), founded in Italy in 1899 by pioneering entrepreneurs, including Giovanni Agnelli. Its presence in Boone County dates back to the mid-1960s. Construction of the Belvidere Assembly Plant began in 1964 and the first car was produced on July 7, 1965. “Boone County is important to FCA US because it is committed to delivering services that will help attract investment, allowing businesses to flourish,” said Mike Bennett, manager, federal and state government affairs for FCA US. “It is what has allowed us to invest more than $1 billion into the Belvidere Assembly Plant since 2009.”

Over the years, some of the company’s most successful products have been produced at the Belvidere Assembly Plant, including the Chrysler New Yorker and Dodge Neon. That legacy continues with the Jeep Cherokee, which was relocated from Toledo, Ohio, to Belvidere in 2017. FCA US announced plans to invest $350 million in Belvidere Assembly to retool it to produce the Jeep Cherokee in 2016. The move was part of a broader plan to help the company expand the Jeep brand and respond to a market shift toward SUVs. The Jeep Cherokee is an award-winning product that offers best-in-class capability and up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Belvidere was awarded bronze status for its results in implementing World Class Manufacturing in 2016. WCM is a methodology that focuses on eliminating waste, increasing productivity and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. The year before, the new Belvidere body shop was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Green Building System certification for meeting the highest environmental standards. “Equally important to our operations and the people that work there is that Boone County is a welcoming place to raise a family,” Bennett said. “World-class amenities combined with rural charm make Boone County a place FCA US is proud to have called home for more than 50 years.” w

Yanfeng Automotive Interiors and Magna International were amongst major suppliers of the FCA who chose to build in Belvidere. Yanfeng, headquartered in Shanghai, China, is the world’s leading automotive interiors supplier and of the 50 largest automotive suppliers in the world. YFIA is a global supplier of interior equipment for the automotive industry and produces instrument door panning and consoles for the Jeep Cherokee. Magna Exteriors, a division of Magna International based in Troy, Michigan, offers a variety of products for the automotive, commercial transportation, consumer and industrial markets. They are an industry leader in molding, painting and assembly, with expertise in developing exterior systems and modules for their customers’ global programs. Magna International produces parts for Jeep Cherokee. Recognized with several industry innovation awards, Magna’s thermoplastic liftgate achieved a 28 percent mass reduction over steel versions and a high-volume application for mass production under one roof. Magna’s completely recyclable thermoplastic liftgate, developed with FCA for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, has collected several industry awards, including first place in the body exterior category at both the European and North American Society of Plastics Engineers automotive innovation awards and the Unsurpassed Innovation Award at the Composites and Advanced Materials Expo. “Working very collaboratively with FCA, we were able to help them replace their previous steel liftgate with a thermoplastic one within a short 18-month timeframe,” said Magna Exteriors Global Product Line Director for Liftgates, Riad Chaaya. “This led to a 28 percent mass reduction for the liftgate assembly and enabled greater design

It is also the first industry use of infrared welding behind a visible exterior surface, which enables structural performance, faster processing and improved dimensional performance. The Illinois Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Illinois Economic Development Association recognized Magna International with an Edie Award in 2018. The Edies honor outstanding economic development projects in Illinois that bring jobs, growth and prosperity to Illinois communities. Chrysler/FCA has made three major investments and over a billion dollars in facility enhancements in the past 10 years. With the retooling of the Jeep Cherokee beginning in 2016, over .5 million square feet in high quality buildings and over 1,300 additional jobs have been added in Boone County as a result. Health Care The Crusader Community Health Belvidere The Crusader Community Health Belvidere, 1050 Logan Ave., was established in 2004 as one of five Crusader Community Health locations in Northwest Illinois. As a federally qualified health center, the clinic provides access to primary health care to low-income and at-risk populations. An affordable sliding discount based on family size and income is available for the uninsured. Medicaid, Medicare and many private insurance plans are accepted. The clinic is staffed by eight medical providers with specialties in family medicine, pediatrics, womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health and dental care for pediatric patients. The facility, which opened in January 2019, includes a host of services for moms and babies, including more than 55 pediatric specialists in more than 29 different specialties, a 52-bed neonatal intensive care unit, small baby unit, pediatric intensive care unit, pediatric unit, maternalfetal medicine services and birthing center. The adult inpatient services include medical/surgical, intensive care and step-down intensive care units, a Level I emergency/trauma center, a host of hybrid technology and outpatient surgery services for both children and adults. The building also features a four-story specialty physician clinic that serves adult and pediatric patients. Its technologically advanced operating suites and surgical services support a full range of inpatient and outpatient surgery, including minimally invasive surgery, image-guided surgery and robotic-assisted surgery. The facility also includes a comprehensive diagnostic center with lab and imaging, and a comprehensive cardiac, peripheral and neurovascular interventional laboratory. OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center In 1899, the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis opened Saint Anthony Hospital, a small hospital on the corner of East State and Summit streets in Rockford. County residents when it brought hospital-based care back to the community nearly 10 years ago. Since 2009, the hospital has continued to introduce many new services. In addition to 24-hour emergency care, surgery and an inpatient unit, the medical center offers a full range of outpatient services, including physical therapy, infusion services, echocardiograms, an anticoagulation clinic, sleep medicine, laboratory and pulmonary function testing. Rock River Valley Blood Center Since 1955, the Rock River Valley Blood Center has been providing blood products and services to Boone County. Highland and Saint Joseph hospitals were among the first in the area to seek out a partnership with the blood center, which subscribes to a communitybased blood banking philosophy. That means community donors know the blood they give stays in the community first to help patients that are family members, friends and neighbors.

The infusion room offers a quiet, private space 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Infusion services are also certified to offer a unique drug called Tysabri, which helps multiple sclerosis patients with their symptoms. Medical imaging services have been especially popular with area residents. In addition to offering digital X-ray, DEXA scans for osteoporosis and ultrasound, the facility has a mobile MRI that can accommodate larger patients and has a wider opening for patients during the procedure that helps claustrophobic patients. In early 2014, the facility launched a new CT scanner with a cuttingedge, 128-slice unit. This new machine offers patients the same advanced technologies in Belvidere that are offered in Rockford. Area women also come to the facility for digital, 3D mammography screening, for walk-in appointments on weekdays and even same-day results. SAMCB also has the ability to schedule services outside of the normal business hours, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for CT Scans, X-ray, lab and EKG services.

Working together with the blood center allowed for better patient care and access in Boone County. Despite the eventual closing of both hospitals, the blood center remained ingrained in the community supporting numerous organizations through financial, human and community resources and support. In 2008, the blood center opened the Belvidere Donor Center, further substantiating its mission to remain a fully committed partner to the people of Boone County. The blood center continues to be the only supplier of blood products and services to all of the medical facilities in Boone and Winnebago counties.

Riverwest Clinic, on Rockford’s southwest side, is a multi-specialty clinic featuring up to six medical practices. Edgewater Medical Center, on Rockford’s northwest side, will feature 16 OB/GYN, pediatrics, family medicine and internal medicine. Creekside Medical Center will be a new clinic adjacent to the Regional Cancer Center, offering 25 providers. SwedishAmerican is also a valuable member of the Boone County community, donating more than $60,000 annually to Boone County charities and thousands more to area nonprofit organizations throughout northern Illinois. The medical center also provides a pharmacist for the community’s medication recycling event, donates flu vaccines to the health department each year and the staff adopts families in Boone County to make their holidays brighter.
