Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens was sworn in as President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police on Oct. 29, 2019. The IACP is the largest organization of law enforcement leaders in the world, with over 31,000 members in 164 countries. Chief Casstevens was initially elected to the position of vice president in 2015, and will serve as president for the next year. Chief Casstevens was given the oath of office by Village Manager Dane Bragg.

After two years on the board, Marian Rodriguez clearly has made her presence and influence known. She handles all the social media for the Chamber, posting multiple times each day, informing the membership and community at large about events of interest and gaining visibility for the members. She takes photographs at Chamber and member events as well as community events from both villages, often creating and posting videos. Marian serves on six committees and chairs the Marketing Committee. When not bustling around at Chamber activities, she is marketing manager for CARSTAR Mundelein and also photographs and participates in events all through Chicagoland. She loves spending time with her niece and nephew, her two beloved dogs, and Randy her other half.

Board Members of the Year Ronnis Oher, LifeMaps

Chamber Board Member of the Year Ronnis Oher turned a sense of humor and a talent for drawing into an unusual business called LifeMaps. “I got the idea in 1980 when I was an elementary school teacher and assigned my students to do a map of their lives,” she recalls. She began creating life-story maps as gifts for grownup friends and colleagues, and they started asking her to create maps for people in their lives. LifeMaps, the business, was born in 2002. Oher’s diverse career also has included teaching meditation, corporate training and owning a human resources consulting firm. She currently volunteers for a local reading/writing program for those with English as a second language. “Serving the Chamber is very important to me,” she said. Since joining the board in 2016 she has chaired the Marketing Committee, the Golf Outing and the Ambassadors Program.

Small Business of the Year Len’s Ace Hardware

Len’s Ace Hardware traces its roots to the early days of the worldwide Ace Hardware co-op. Len and Mary Grimsley started their first hardware store in Addison in 1959, and when it joined the Ace network in 1962, it was just the 426th Ace store. Today the co-op includes 5,300. Len’s Ace now includes six stores and is owned by Len’s grandson, Len Grimsley III. The Grimsleys expanded into Buffalo Grove in 2017 by purchasing the longstanding Zimmerman Hardware store at 745 S. Buffalo Grove Road. “We offer a more personalized service than the big-box stores,” said Assistant Operations Manager Ken Huff. “We don’t care if you buy one light bulb or 50. We greet everybody and think of ourselves as ‘the helpful place.’” “Len’s Ace Hardware is a dedicated member who has sponsored several chamber events in 2018 and given back to the community,” said Chamber President Adriane Johnson.

Middle-Sized Business of the Year Blackdog Speed Shop

“Our passion for racing stems from our pure love of automobiles,” owner Tony Gaples said of the Blackdog Speed Shop and Racing Team of Lincolnshire. Gaples began racing in 2000 for Lake Forest Sports Cars. In 2002 he formed his own team and ran with SCCA club racing until mid-2003, when he ran two professional races and never looked back. They got many requests to help other car owners, so in 2006 Tony opened Blackdog Speed Shop to help fund the racing program by working on other people’s street and race cars. In 2018, Blackdog moved to a new headquarters three times as big (60,000 square feet) and also opened up a performance-car auto dealership. Each year Blackdog hosts the Chamber’s Casino Night, helps operate Buffalo Grove Days and raises funds for several charities.

Large Businesses of the Year Legacy Healthcare and U.S. Bank

Two firms shared the Chamber’s Large Business of the Year honors in 2019 – US Bank and Legacy Healthcare. US Bank is a key affinity partner of the Chamber, offering credit-card processing to members. The bank also sponsors Buffalo Grove Days and is active in the Business Referral Network. Legacy Healthcare has been a “name sponsor” of the Chamber’s golf outing for two years and gives back to the community, as well as supporting many chamber events. Legacy is a fast-growing provider of residential health care consulting services. It manages 52 nursing, rehab, assisted-living and supported-living facilities in four states. Locally, a campus along Jamestown Lane in Lincolnshire houses the Warren Barr Lincolnshire skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility plus the Wellshire Lincolnshire assisted-living facility. Another campus, along Checker Road in Long Grove, houses the Avantara Long Grove skilled nursing and rehab facility.

Kenneth Huff, who oversees operations at the Len’s Ace Hardware store in Buffalo Grove and is training coordinator for all six Len’s Ace stores, earned one of two Chamber Member of the Year honors. In the words of Chamber President Adriane Johnson, “Kenneth Huff has consistently sponsored and attended key Chamber events, and he has hosted various community events while promoting the Chamber.” But Huff said the real credit for the Buffalo Grove store’s success should go to Manager Tom Brinkman, who he said has been a “staple” at the Buffalo Grove store for decades before Len’s bought it from the Zimmerman family in 2017. “Without Tom Brinkman, the store wouldn’t be what it is,” Huff said. “People come in and say, ‘Hi, Tom, how are you?’”

“People think about the library as a place for books and children’s programs and DVDs. But they also should think of the library as a place to grow their business,” said Ashley Johnson, the business outreach librarian at Vernon Area Public Library. Chamber President Adriane Johnson (no relation) said the librarian earned Chamber Member of the Year honors by “being instrumental in building on the success of the Business Referral Network, developing special educational programs for the business community and actively participating in and supporting Chamber events.” She also helped start a Young Professionals Group that Ashley said “offers young people a path to Chamber membership and gets them involved in what Chamber membership means.” For entrepreneurs, the librarian leads one-on-one instruction and group programs that teach business people how to develop Google profiles and Facebook pages. “I’ve always focused on getting to know the people in the community and finding ways to connect them with one another,” she added. www.bglcc.org 17

Buffalo Grove Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce partnered with High School District 214 to provide invaluable experience for two District 214 students through micro internships last summer. Supervised by Adriane Johnson, Chamber President, students were given a marketing research project and presented results to the Chamber Board. The experience provided students the opportunity to exhibit and strengthen research, leadership, technology communication and presentation skills. In addition, Chamber members and 214 worked collaboratively on a College Entrepreneurship program. Throughout this hands-on, dual credit honors course, students ideate,

A new three-way collaboration launched in May 2019 as the Raupp Museum, Longfellow School and the BGL Chamber of Commerce participated in Buffalo Grove’s first ever Shark Tank for Kids event. The museum taught third-grade students about invention and innovation, Longfellow teachers guided their classes in completing project displays and pitch speeches, and Chamber members served as judges at a gala kickoff event on May 28 at the Raupp Museum. Over 150 attended as teams of students presented their ideas, and 12 teams were chosen as winners.

History

Museum takes visitors into the Buffalo Grove of yesteryear

Visitors can walk through almost 200 years of Buffalo Grove’s past in the

Raupp Museum, a history showpiece operated by the Buffalo Grove Park District at 901 Dunham Lane. The museum’s Main Gallery tells the story of the land where the village stands, from the first Pottawatomi

natives through early farm settlement to “the bustling suburb of today.” The Crossroads Gallery shows what life was like for a farm family in the early 1900s. And the Lower Gallery has a new exhibit every few months. “This area has been called Buffalo Grove for as long as we’ve been on the map. But nobody knows exactly why,” says Museum Curator Debbie Fandrei. “We began as a small farming community and developed later than a lot of suburbs because we didn’t have a railroad to carry commuters into Chicago.” “However, the post-World War II years became a perfect storm for growth. We had veterans starting families and getting VA mortgages at the same time farmers were retiring and highways were improving. When Buffalo Grove was incorporated as a village in 1958, it had just 164 people. But we grew to 10,000 in the first 10 years,” and now to more than 40,000.

Lincolnshire grew late but fast

The ground occupied by today’s Lincolnshire was settled by the first non-native settlers in 1834. But Lincolnshire was not incorporated as a village until 1957, and even then, it had just 237 people. Today the village has a population of 7,500. It has expanded its area tenfold, has 38 miles of streets (all bearing English names) and, thanks to its large base of stores, theaters, hotels and office buildings, has a daytime population of some 20,000. In 1955 Ladd Enterprises purchased 280 acres between the Des Plaines River and Riverwoods Road, and began developing a subdivision called Lincolnshire. The development’s first residents had dirt roads, septic systems, propane gas tanks and party-line telephones, and they were dependent on police protection from the sheriff ’s office in Waukegan.

Photo provided by Village of Lincolnshire These early problems led to the formation of a homeowners’ group called the Cambridge Forest Association (because Cambridge Lane was the only developed street at that time) and incorporation as a village on August 5, 1957. The association later became known as the Lincolnshire

Community Association. It started many festivals and events. Although the LCA is no longer active today, the village and residents and community groups carry forward many of these annual traditions, including the Fourth of July celebration, Boo Bash and Holiday Tree Lighting.

Buddy Baseball The thrill of hitting a ball and rounding the bases is available to children and adults with special needs, thanks to Buffalo Grove’s Buddy Baseball program through the Buffalo Grove Recreation Association. Buddy Baseball started in 1994 and celebrated its 25th anniversary this past summer, said League Director Allen Katz. While the league uses Buffalo Grove Park District facilities, it is not a park district program. Buddy Baseball averages around 50 players per season, with two junior teams for ages 5-14 and two senior teams for ages 15 and up. There is no age limit for senior players. The league provides each player with a “buddy,” a volunteer age 11 or older, who accompanies the player throughout the game. Buddies help players bat if needed, and run the bases with the players. If the player uses a wheelchair, the buddy pushes the chair. Everyone gets a turn at bat, Katz

said. “We don’t keep score. We don’t have outs. Each players gets a chance to hit the ball. It’s just for fun; that’s our mission.” Games are played at Twin Creeks Park on a rubberized field painted to look like a baseball diamond. Players sit in dugouts; parents cheer. Most importantly, Katz noted, players learn to focus at batting and fielding. “It gives them confidence, shows their ability, not disability, and

makes them proud.” What’s gratifying for Katz is “the smiles on their faces when they hit the ball. They smile all around the bases.” The league is like a large family, with buddies and players forming a strong bond and looking forward to their time together on the field. Some pairs even hang out together off the field, Katz noted. “It’s amazing to watch everyone come together to support the kids.” The season ends with an All-Star game, and all players receive trophies. “They are all All-Stars,” Katz said. The program is not limited to Buffalo Grove residents, Katz said. All interested players from around the suburbs are welcome. Buffalo Grove Recreation Buffalo Grove Park District celebrating 50 years

The Buffalo Grove Park District has been celebrating its 50th anniversary with a temporary exhibit in the Raupp Museum (at 901 Dunham Lane) and several special events, such as planting â&#x20AC;&#x153;50 trees for 50 years.â&#x20AC;? Village-wide recreation in Buffalo Grove began in 1960 when residents of the 2-year-old town formed a Buffalo Grove Recreation Association to administer a local Little League. By 1969 that had grown into an independent park district that now includes 51 parks with a multitude of facilities and programs. The largest is Mike Rylko Park, which includes a fitness center, an indoor pool, a skate park, the Spray â&#x20AC;&#x2122;N Play water park and an indoor driving range. Each summer this park hosts the villageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centerpiece community-wide event, Buffalo Grove Days. Willow Stream Park includes an outdoor pool, ball fields, soccer fields and events such as Movies in the Park. The Community Arts Center includes a theater and exhibit space. But every day finds the village’s residents enjoying a variety of parks, trails, bike paths and athletic activities. For several years, Lincolnshire had been joining in the nationwide National Night Out, a chance to get to know their police and their neighbors. But starting in 2019, “we decided to involve more than our police,” said Police Commander Kim Covelli. “We wanted to include all our community heroes – educators, medical personnel, community volunteers, public works employees and other village staff.” This first “Heroes Night” was held on Aug. 23, 2019, in North Park. It included games, food, face-painting, water slides and K-9 demonstrations. In a village of 7,500 residents, it drew 3,000 people. Lincolnshire boasts 11 parks and several trails. A volunteer group named the Lincolnshire Sports Association provides recreational and travel-league programs in

soccer, baseball, basketball, kickball, field hockey and dance. The Lincolnshire Swim Club, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019, organizes swimming programs. The Stevenson High School Patriot Recreation Education Program provides yet other recreation opportunities.
