President Welcome

he Chamber had a very successful 2018. We added 26 new members. Due to the generosity of our members we have been able to continue to support our local communities. Our members hosted 11 Business after Hours events. We cooperated with the Village of Bensenville Chamber on their Business after Hours as they cooperated with our Chamber to further strong business growth. We had a very successful and fun Christmas party which resulted in a donation of food and over $1,000.00 to Leyden Family Services. Our Christmas tour was enjoyed by all. Due to the generosity of the business community we were again able to donate to the park/recreation districts of Franklin Park, Schiller Park and River Grove and Veterans Park and the WSSRA-West Suburban Special Recreation Association’s Derby Gala. We co-sponsored Leyden District 212’s Career Fair/Business Expo. We were also able to sponsor programs at Rhodes School and the Franklin Park Viper baseball and softball league. The Chamber was a sponsor for Leyden Township’s Trek to the R.E.C. We hosted a lunch for Shriners Hospital also purchasing a specifically designed bicycle for patient use. The Chamber awarded three $1,500 scholarships. Digital Realty is generously adding a fourth $1500 scholarship this year. One scholarship was specific to a manufacturing related program at Triton College. Our annual golf outing cosponsored by the Bensenville Chamber is our main fundraiser for our scholarship program. We had a very successful outing last year. All this would not be possible without the support of the Villages of Franklin Park, Schiller Park, River Grove and Leyden Township. I also want to thank our excellent and hardworking volunteer board of directors that put together over 20 events each year. The board is composed of local business people, non-elected government administrators, private citizens and educators. We are privileged to have representatives from Sloan Valve; Digital Realty; Pan American Bank; Roy Strom Refuse; Huntington Bank; Leyden Credit Union; American Family Insurance; Rickert Realtors; Leyden Township; the park districts of Franklin Park, Bensenville and Veterans Park; JS Printing; JBW Machining; KCS Computer; Coldwell Banker; Triton College; all three villages we serve; and Leyden District 212 as board members. The 2019-2020 Community Guide is provided by the Chamber by

O’Hare and is distributed to all residents of the three villages, village halls, libraries and community centers and it is included in the welcome packet given to all new businesses. We encourage you to please patronize the advertisers and Chamber members who support the activities of the Chamber and the publication of the Community Guide. Local shopping helps your community. We wish to thank the Villages of Franklin Park, Schiller Park, River Grove, Leyden Township, Daily Herald and Town Square Publications for their help in making this guide possible. The cover of this guide was once again designed by Leyden District 212 high school students. The Chamber works closely with neighboring Chambers, school districts, village governments, charity and community organizations. This year we will again present Breakfast with Your Mayors, Meet Your Representatives and the Business Expo/Career Fair in conjunction with Leyden District 212. In order to help our business, educational, government and residential communities, we need to recruit and retain local businesses. If you are a member, I hope you not only stay but also take advantage of our many events, most of which are free. If you are not a member, please consider joining. You will find an application in the Community Guide or online at www.chamberbyohare.org. Your business will benefit through networking, referrals and our website, and advertising is now available on our site. As a member, you can attend as many or as few events as you wish. Business guests are welcome, but you must register for the event. The Chamber is headquartered at KCS Computer Technology, 9524 Franklin Ave. in Franklin Park, next to the Franklin Park Community Center. There you will find information on the goods and services offered by our members along with information on community events. We are open on weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Current Chamber members, please feel free to drop off some literature and business cards on your company. Please support our communities by shopping, playing and entertaining locally. All three villages have excellent park districts and facilities: fun pools, parks and day trips. Prices are very reasonable. Don’t miss out on the host of first-class events put on by the villages – historical house and barn tours, Franklin Park Fest, Car Shows and street dances to mention a few. President Welcome

elcome to the Village of River Grove, or more commonly referred to as the Village of Friendly Neighbors. I have just completed my second year as mayor of this beautiful community, and I look forward to a busy and productive year ahead. One of my goals for this year is service: service to our residents, community, business leaders and our seniors. That being said, we are excited to introduce our very own Pace Bus program in River Grove. This program will allow our seniors and disabled residents to be transported to local shopping areas, doctors’ appointments and meetings. We are proud of our status as the oldest municipality in Leyden Township. At 131 years old, River Grove recognizes its aging infrastructure. We are committed to rehabbing our streets, sewers and alleys through a long-term, strategic plan. We have partnered with the Water Reclamation District as we rebuild our green alleys throughout town. Green alleys provide relief to the storm drain system by reducing the volume of water that surcharges the storm water system. It also allows for the water to drain naturally into the ground. This year we are implementing a 50/50 sidewalk program for our residents, this will help defray the cost to residents who want to replace aging sidewalks. Economic development is at an all-time high in River Grove. This past February, we broke ground on a new Starbucks property at the corner of Grand and Thatcher. This property had been vacant for over 10 years. We are proud to say that residents and visitors can expect to be enjoying a latte by autumn of 2019. We are also aggressively pursuing all abandoned properties in town – removing blight, converting it to green space or adding commercial or tax-generating business developments. We are fortunate River Grove is in a great location, and our real estate values are on the rise! The recent development of 48 luxury units is at near full capacity and there are other developments in the works. Developers are taking advantage of our location with transit-oriented

developments. Many of our residents are business professionals who take advantage of our Metra station near Grand and Thatcher and can get you to downtown Chicago in 20 minutes. River Grove is rich in history and beautification is important to us. We have a dedicated team of public works employees who ensure our community is one we can all be proud of, from beautiful flowers and colors in the spring and summer to festive lights to brighten the town in fall and winter. Our Historical House and Barn is a landmark in town, and it offers free tours the first Sunday of the month from May through October. As a way to bring our community together, we sponsor many community events in River Grove. Our biggest is the River Front Fest, four days of music, great food and plenty of carnival rides. Our Unwind event features Italian food, wonderful goodies from Triton’s culinary school, wine, crafters and the best jazz music in the area. This year, we are having an October Fest with a German band, beer, brats, corn and fun for the kids. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our events; please contact the village at (708) 453-8000, leave your contact information and let one of our employees know you want to help. River Grove also has a great recreation department that has a variety of activities. Our new and current families are able to take full advantage of recreation programs, such as baseball, softball, soccer, flag football, basketball and open gyms. There are other offerings like teen dances, breakfasts with Santa and the Easter Bunny, Mom and Daughter and Dad and Son events, movie nights and craft days. This year we are adding/updating two new parks in town, thanks to partnerships with Veterans Park District and the River Grove Lions Club. It is such an honor for me to be mayor of my hometown.
