Through the hard work of staff, writers and photographers we have produced a high quality publication that personifies our high quality city. As you browse through its pages you’ll quickly agree that Clovis is a special place to live. Others agree also as we have been named the Number One City to Raise a Young Family in California – for the second time! According to NerdWallet, a website helping people with financial decisions, “This city in the San Joaquin Valley offers affordable homes, good schools and a good quality of life for families…(with) 285 acres of parks and trails!”
The Chamber works closely with the district. In 2014, we became a host for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy that teaches business ownership skills to middle and high school students. We were asked by the US Chamber of Commerce to be the first to present the program in California that was created in 2004 by the University of Rochester. The support from the students, their parents, the district and local community leaders has been tremendous. We are proud to be part of such a valuable program that has literally changed students’ lives and prepares them to become highly skilled, productive members of society with good character.
To those of us who live here, it was an obvious choice. We enjoy the benefits of a responsibly run city government, award winning public safety, a nationally recognized school system and a growing economic base. The Clovis Chamber plays an integral part in working with all three entities. Chamber members and staff are involved with government committees and serve on commissions. Clovis’ smart housing and land use plans places us as the 15th best city in California for home ownership.
Adding to the quality of life in Clovis are the Chamber’s two festivals, BIG Hat Days in April and ClovisFest in October. Attracting over 200,000 visitors each year they add to the economic vitality of local merchants and the city and provide a wonderful tradition for Valley families. The Chamber Insider is our monthly newsletter with a reader count of close to 30,000 throughout Clovis and the Fresno area. The newsletter supplies information to Chamber members but also reaches many residents’ households who participate in Chamber events.

ClovisPAC is the political action committee of the Chamber of Commerce and exists as an independent entity that studies legislative issues and can support, endorse or oppose city, county, state and national issues or candidates. ClovisPAC is also recognized as an effective influence on the local and statewide political scene. n
Young Entrepreneurs Academy
Created in 2004 in New York, it is an after-school course for ambitious middle and high school students who have a passion to become entrepreneurs. Over the seven-month course, they will create an actual business that will culminate in presenting their plans to an investor panel. The winning company competes nationally for scholarships.
In May, the Chamber is presenting the third Annual Clovis EXPO trade show promoting local products and services. Visitors to the Veterans Memorial Building will find Business Row, the Vineyard with tastes from local wineries and A Taste of Clovis filled with savory cuisine from Valley restaurants. n
Women Business Owners Roundtable
Once a month, Clovis Chamber women business owners gather for dinner and to discuss the successes and trials they face in their companies. No topic is off the table as they learn from each other’s experiences. Occasionally, guest speakers are brought in to discuss business matters.
Central Valley Forums is a seminar series where luminaries will spend an evening discussing current issues that affect local residents. n
Ribbon Cutting Committee
The Ribbon Cutting Team celebrates new businesses, expansions, remodels and new ownership by cutting the ribbon with the famous big Chamber scissors – another great way to network and market your business.
Advocating for local businesses is one of the primary responsibilities of the Chamber. The Advocacy Task Force analyzes and acts on legislation that impacts the business community. Recognized statewide for its advocacy, the committee encourages members to interact with elected officials to impact legislative decisions. n
Membership Mixers
Each month, a Chamber member hosts a mixer for fellow members. New relationships and leads are established that help to improve and increase business.
Ambassadors are the official goodwill representatives for the Chamber. Their primary mission is to promote and recruit membership through ribbon cuttings, personal contacts and directory distribution. n

Chamber Gives Back
The Chamber Gives Back committee is focused on giving back to the community. Our “Hooked-on-Books” program with a goal of putting a book in the hands of every school child in Clovis, is in full swing. Distributions have been completed at five area schools, with more planned next year. The Chamber is also encouraging donations for the new Marjaree Mason Center, a shelter for women that has just opened in Clovis.

COMMUNITY OVERVIEW “While technology has been the niche of Silicon Valley, thanks to its proximity to Stanford University, families are the niche of Clovis. We didn’t go looking for that niche, but the niche found us because folks that have come before us have made a lot of good decisions that have created this family-friendly environment,” the mayor said. “Our responsibility now is to make sure we don’t mess things up as we continue to grow.”
lovis is a community that knows and respects its history and Mayor Bob Whalen, whose family has been part of the community for four generations, knows it even better than most. “According to the stories my mother told me, Clovis was looked down on for many years by others in the valley. It was considered a podunk town made up of migrants from the Dustbowl states, Mexico and, more recently, Southeast Asia”, Whalen said. “What others failed to realize,” he noted, “is that those hard-scrabble, tough-minded people who were willing to work hard, pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make something of themselves have made Clovis the great community it is today. They had a hard work, no excuses mentality.”
“Change is not progress, if you lose your core.” Whalen added. “As we continue to grow, we work to make sure that we encourage interaction and maintain our small town-feel. Clovis streets are built in a mellow, meandering style with plenty of green space which engenders calmness, not frenzy. We continue significant emphasis on education, public safety and family-oriented values. We design villages and neighborhoods within our city to encourage interaction by building trails and parks where people can connect with one another and we preserve our traditional gatherings in Old Town Clovis such as the farmers market, the Clovis Chamber’s Big Hat Days and ClovisFest, and our 102-year-old rodeo.”
In fact, 104-year-old Clovis has been home to every immigrant and Native American group and every ethnic and cultural minority in California – a community working together to build their family’s American dreams. Descendants of early settlers like Marcus Pollasky remain today, mingling and working with more recent immigrants to the Central Valley, to create the often-touted “Clovis Way of Life” which involves a tradition of public service, community mindedness and excellence; holding their city to higher standards than anyone else for miles around.
Clovis now has the lowest unemployment rate and the highest household income in the region. It’s come a long way from the days when people used to look down their noses at the folks who lived here. In fact, people now pay a premium for homes with a Clovis address. “It’s really the result of folks committing to making themselves, each other and their community the best it can be”, Whalen noted.
It’s hard to argue with the results: top-ranked public schools, the safest city in the Valley, and a community that has consistently been ranked as the Best City for Young Families in California by the consumer information website, NerdWallet.

Clovis is now a large city of 108,000 but the mayor is confident, “we will continue to succeed as long as we maintain our core.” Hard work, no excuses. The Clovis Veterans Memorial District is a California Special District established in 1946 to honor our veterans and serve our community. There are 27 districts in the State of California that honor the 2 million veterans who call California home. The Clovis Veterans Memorial District is proud to serve the community by honoring its mission to provide a permanent living memorial honoring U.S. Military and Veterans; provide facilities and support programs to promote a legacy of service for preserving our community’s and country’s foundational ideals. The Clovis Veterans Memorial District is known throughout Central California as a hidden gem. It is lauded as one of the most remarkable facilities throughout the Central Valley and is priced to provide the best value to customers in California. The revenue generated from facility rentals helps fund school and community programs, affords free meeting space to veterans and youth organizations, and provides discounts to service clubs and many other programs. Special grants that promote civic education, patriotism and character development are also resourced from revenue generated through facility rentals. The Veterans Memorial Building, which is today known as the Rex Phebus Memorial Building, was completed in 1951 and has seen extensive remodeling to become a modern, green, conference center. features a 350-seat auditorium, a ballroom that can accommodate over 900 guests and meeting rooms of various sizes used to host many different events for the Clovis community. The facility patrons include veterans’ organizations, nonprofit groups, governmental agencies from around the state and country, weddings, memorial services and more, according to Lorenzo Rios, District CEO.
Central California District Council of the Japanese American League and the Central California Nikkei Foundation. The District also honors military working dogs and their handlers through a memorial erected at the Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center in Clovis. The memorial educates the public on the service that military work dogs have provided to this country dating back to World War I.
“We bring a lot of outside business to Clovis.” Rios said.
In an effort to fulfill the District’s mission of honoring veterans and educating the community, the District has made a promise to open a Community Heritage Center. The center will focus on preserving our community’s and country’s foundational ideals through interactive exhibits that engage the community with a focus on veterans and local history.
In recent years the Memorial District added several memorials that serve to educate the community on the sacrifices made in defense of the country and to provide healing for those who served. One such memorial consists of statues of five figures standing in a semicircle around the boots, rifle and helmet of a fallen comrade. Each figure represents a different military branch from a different era in history and is meant to ensure that those who fell in the line of duty are never forgotten. Another memorial is the Veterans’ Garden of Honor which is a living remembrance of the Clovis men and women who gave their lives in the major conflicts of our country.
Plans are in final stages to open an Innovation Center that will promote a healthy, safe place for the community and veterans to come and learn about different hands on projects from wood working to welding, 3-D printing and so much more. The Innovation Center will provide a space for an intergenerational conversation to start that promotes the sharing of stories, culture, experience and traditions that promote a vibrant community.
“The names of local Gold Star Heroes from as far back as World War I are memorialized there,” Rios said.
The District partnered with the City of Clovis to open up a new commercial kitchen that will provide the community the opportunity to access a facility with three commercial kitchens and a renowned chef who will provide advice to budding chefs and entrepreneurs. The District also makes available to the community the rental of all four commercial kitchens in the District’s main facility. These kitchens provide the commercial facility needed to help those small businesses in the cottage food industry blossom in Central California.
Another memorial is a large metal globe with nearby plaques which memorialize veterans of different wars and battles throughout our nation’s history. The District has also erected two memorials at off-site locations in the community. One is The Remembrance Plaza of the Pinedale Assembly Center that honors the 4,800 Japanese-Americans who were interned nearby. It includes a sculpted fountain that shares the history of the former internment camp, as well as the U.S. Soldiers of Japanese descent and the path toward reconciliation. lovis Unified School District (CUSD) is the 16th largest school district in the state of California with an enrollment of 42,400 students this academic year. And it continues to grow by an average of 500 to 800 students per year as more and more people choose to make the Central Valley their home.
“In Clovis Unified, we hold tightly to this understanding and to the responsibility that comes along with it. At its heart, our job as educators is all about unlocking the potential in our students to become the best that they can be as adults,” she added. “Our work is about inspiring and equipping tomorrow’s inventors, entrepreneurs, scientists and leaders. Even though the CUSD is a mammoth district that covers 198 square miles, it still manages to take a personal approach with each student and to win accolades for excellence in a wide cross section of its 50 school sites. In fact, this past summer California released student achievement numbers from annual tests in math and English/language arts and once again Clovis Unified students outperformed their peers around the state and Fresno County by as much as 25 percent, according to Chief Communication Officer Kelly Avants.
CUSD is known for its faculty’s use of cutting edge educational methods and its state-of-the-art facilities. Just one example of the opportunities CUSD provides was the free, six-day program called “Dive Into Space,” offered to CUSD high school students last summer. Co-sponsored by NASA and Fresno State University’s Aerospace Academy, the program allowed students to wear scuba gear so they could perform tasks underwater that simulated working in space with zero gravity.
In English/language arts, 67 percent of Clovis Unified students met or exceeded grade level standards, which is a 7 percent increase over last year’s results. Statewide, on the other hand, 49 percent of students met or exceeded these standards and in Fresno County that number slumped to 42 percent. In math, Clovis Unified’s percent of students meeting or exceeding standards grew four points from 50 percent in 2015 to 54 percent in 2016. By contrast, across the state, 37 percent of students achieving at or above grade level in math. In Fresno County 30 percent of students met or exceeded math standards. “Our teachers have come together from every school to closely study grade-level standards and develop local curriculum that is best-suited to our teachers and students in Clovis Unified,” said Dr. Debbie Parra, CUSD’s assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and accountability. “They have been united in their efforts to guide our instructional strategies, the pacing of lessons, and the design of curriculum maps that support the success of every teacher in every grade level.”

As far as facilities go, CUSD’s are second-to-none. In fact, the track and field facilities in the Veterans Memorial Stadium at the Buchanan Educational Center are so incredible that the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has chosen to hold their state track and field championships there for the past eight years and last year the United States Track and Field Federation held their Junior Nationals competitions there, too. The CIF has also held the state cross country championships in nearby Woodward Park since 1987 and for the past two years has been holding the state swim and dive championships in the Olympic pool complex at Clovis West High School.

“These events are great for Clovis. People travel here from all over the state and country and totally fill our hotels and restaurants,” said Steve Ward, legislative analyst for the District. Capital improvements around the District are ongoing. The new Ginny Boris Elementary School opened this fall to accommodate ongoing increases in enrollment. Over 600 students are enrolled at the new school. In addition, Ward said they had about 20 modernization and improvement projects happening around the District this summer as work continues to ensure every school (whether old or new) is a great place for children to learn. An exciting District-wide program is the solar project, which is now in its second phase. Shade structures with solar panels on top are being constructed over parking lots all over the District in order to simultaneously generate electricity for the schools and create shade over cars and buses. Ward expects almost all CUSD schools to have such structures in place by the end of 2017. “We are annually saving $2.8 million from the first phase of this project and the second phase will add an additional $1 million in cost avoidance for the District,” Ward said. “We paid for these structures through a bond issue, an investment that will pay for itself within 10 years. It has been a great project.” n

CALIFORNIA HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERSITY t isn’t very often that you get to see a university built from the ground up. Most universities seem to have been in place forever, boasting legions of alumni. But the people of Clovis have had a unique opportunity to watch a brand-new, innovative university, dedicated to the education of health care professionals, be born, grow and thrive. California Health Sciences University (CHSU) was founded in 2012 as a private, proprietary university. It was the brainchild and dream of the Assemi family, owners of Granville Homes, which has built over 5,000 homes in the Central Valley since 1977. “The Assemis are long-time residents who are really plugged-in, generous and civic-minded. They are wonderful about supporting causes they believe in,” said Shawn Miller, business development manager for the City of Clovis.

“Our students leave the valley and don’t come back. Most medical programs link their students to residencies and on-the-job training close to the school. So students who leave establish their lives close to where they were trained and that has become a huge issue for us,” she added.
“The Assemi family has a heart for this community and it was their dream to establish a university in the San Joaquin Valley which could train masters and doctoral level healthcare practitioners in many different disciplines. They made the investment of capital, time and effort,” said Richele Kleiser, CHSU vice president of marketing and communications.
CHSU’s leaders hope that the university will provide close-to-home opportunities to local students seeking careers in medicine and might even attract outside students who will fall in love with the area and decide to stay and start their medical careers in the valley.
“Farid Assemi and his family understood that there is an extremely large need for medical professionals in the Valley now. Then they projected out several decades and realized that the shortages will become even more severe if someone didn’t step in right now and do something about it.”
Since they are developing CHSU to address very real health provider shortage issues, Founding President Florence Dunn and her colleagues are working closely with local hospitals, pharmacies, schools and health agencies to gauge need and then are proceeding to develop medical colleges within the university in the order in which “needs” seem to be most pressing, Kleiser said. They are also being careful to ensure their graduates will have strong career and job opportunities and that they not to compete with existing health care-related programs in the area, most of which are partnering with CHSU. The College of Pharmacy opened first – in the fall of 2014 – because the need seemed to be the greatest. “Representatives of the pharmacy industry – CVS, Walgreen’s, independents and even the hospitals – approached us when they heard we were planning to open a university to train health care practitioners and literally said, ‘we need your students.’ They struggle with hiring pharmacists in the valley and the turnover is very high. They don’t want this issue to impact the level of care,” she said. The College of Pharmacy has been holding classes at an interim campus at 120 N. Clovis Ave. It features a 32,000-square-foot building and this summer a second 17,000-square-foot building opened across the street. Approximately 180 students (62 percent of whom are from the valley) are currently enrolled and up to another 84 more will be added next year. The first group of pharmacists is due to graduate from the four-year program in May 2018. ›

The first building scheduled to be built on the permanent campus is a 70,000-square-foot College of Pharmacy building that could start as early as 2017 and be complete in fall 2019 or spring 2020. Once it moves to the new site, Kleiser said that the Clovis Avenue site will be used as an “incubator” for each new school they establish, allowing the administration to fully understand the space, facility and equipment needs of each college. Only after the colleges are well established enough will they move to the permanent campus. Other structures due to be constructed include a library, student housing, an auditorium, administrative building and a student center. Projections call for the university to one day enroll between 2,000 and 3,000 students and employ approximately 300 faculty and staff.

In addition to educating their pharmacy students, CHSU leaders are currently working on a master plan for their permanent campus, to be conveniently located on approximately 70 acres in the Clovis Research and Technology Park, just north and west of the Clovis Community Medical Center campus. They are also deciding which other medical specialty colleges will follow the College of Pharmacy and in what order, based on needs in the valley.
“Our leadership team is interested in rolling out the university campus in the best way possible so they have reached out to and visited similar campuses all over the country to study their programs, facilities and campus designs,” Kleiser said. “The environment and programs we provide to our students is extremely important to us.” The Assemi family recruited Dunn to serve as president of their new university because they had served on several charitable boards with her and respected her leadership abilities and her deep connection to the community. They also understood her financial prowess as a former banker and knew that Dunn was well aware of the valley’s health care challenges.
CHSU plans to open as many as 10 post-graduate colleges to train health care professionals and is considering allied health, podiatry, optometry and a medical school, among others. The timing and specific discipline for each new school will be determined based on the need as well as opportunities for job placement within the region, according to Kleiser.
She, in turn, went outside the valley and brought in Dr. Wendy Duncan as provost and interim Dean of Pharmacy. Dr. Duncan had previously served in similar capacities at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and at St. Louis University. w
It is estimated that the build-out of the university and its campus will take 20 years since development of the campus will occur in phases as each new health science college is established.

When California SB 493 took effect in 2014, the role of pharmacists on the health care team was elevated in the state. The bill created the Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APP) designation. APPs may provide primary care in collaboration with physicians to help alleviate the shortage of health care providers.
“This model has been in place at Kaiser Permanente and the Veterans Administration for a while now and it is providing additional opportunities for pharmacists. A pilot program with the Clovis Community Medical Centers will soon have CHSU faculty and pharmacy students seeing qualified patients in their employee health plan and we plan to open a pharmacist-led clinic on our campus,” Kleiser said.
“Physicians will continue to be the diagnosticians on the health care team, but once there has been a diagnosis, patients with chronic conditions may be referred to a clinical pharmacist for regular visits and creating care plans. The pharmacist can conduct physical assessments of the patient, review a patient’s current and past medical history, medications and diet, and then give advice and even adjust their meds, if necessary, with the permission of the physician,” said Richele Kleiser, CHSU vice president of marketing and communications.
“We are proud of our innovative curriculum which is really pushing the field of pharmacy forward. It will be a tremendous asset to the Valley,” she added. California Health Sciences University’s College of Pharmacy is one of 13 colleges of pharmacy in the state of California. It is currently working toward full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the national agency that accredits all Doctor of Pharmacy programs.
“We are preparing our graduates to perform at the top of their licenses through team-based learning and an innovative curriculum that includes physical assessment and delivery of primary health care services to meet the demand for health professionals in this region,” said Dr. Wendy Duncan, interim dean of pharmacy.
The college will be eligible for full accreditation when its first class graduates and ACPE is able to evaluate passing rates and pharmacy board exam scores, according to Kleiser.
This is what sets CHSU apart from other pharmacy schools in California. CHSU students take courses in pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences and patient care and complete physical assessment labs under the direct supervision of practicing pharmacists and physicians during rotations at hospitals, clinics and community pharmacies so that they will be ready to perform in an

But CHSU’s current status of “candidate status” with ACPE gives students the same rights as full accreditation and allows them to take their pharmacy board exams upon graduation and shows that the college is providing students with an excellent pharmacy education.

TRIBUTE TO FRAN BLACKNEY’S YEA WORK he Clovis Chamber of Commerce, particularly its Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) and annual ClovisFest and BIG Hat Days celebrations, lost a tireless worker and passionate advocate in November 2015 when Fran Blackney, 65, passed away due to a sudden illness. She was the Chamber’s communications and business/ political advocacy director. Some of Blackney’s strongest advocacy efforts were in the nationallyknown YEA! program that she spearheaded in Clovis. YEA! is a groundbreaking program, established in 2004, that transforms middle and high school students into skilled entrepreneurs who create and run actual businesses. During Blackney’s tenure the Clovis YEA! graduated more than 53 students who started over 18 businesses and social movements while simultaneously completing high school on time. Ninety-nine percent then went on to enroll in college.
legally registered their businesses, participated in a trade show and actually launched their own businesses or social movements. In addition to learning the ins-and-outs of running a business, Blackney’s YEA! students gained long-lasting life skills like selfconfidence, writing and comprehension proficiency, critical thinking, financial literacy, public speaking abilities and interview/job seeking skills.
While involved in the program, the students brainstormed business ideas, wrote a business plan, interacted with business professionals, pitched their business plan to potential “investors,” obtained funding,

support you with all her might, even if she was the only pillar to hold you up,” recalled Alexander Ewing, one of her YEA! students.
Since the Clovis Chamber of Commerce was the first Chamber in California asked to take part in this program, Blackney quickly came to the attention of officials with the national office in Rochester, New York. In fact, following her death, they said she had “personified the spirit of the YEA! mission, inspiring us every day.”
“She had a way of leaving an impact on every person she met,” added Greg Da Cunhu, another YEA! alum. “Fran taught me that integrity is everything; she always pushed us for excellence.”
“Fran’s passion for inspiring students to pursue their dreams was a hallmark of her warm and energetic personality,” said Sara Moonan, director of community engagement for the national organization. “Fran put her heart, soul and sense of humor into all of her students’ experiences. Fran loved nurturing her students’ self-confidence and helping them to discover their potential.”
“What surprised me most about Fran was that even as a YEA alumni, she was still willing to jump through hoops to help me if I asked her for assistance,” said Jessica Chillingerian. Tributes from the adults Blackney recruited to assist her with the YEA! program and other local endeavors were also effusive.
“Her impact on education in the Clovis community and student success is undeniable and will always be remembered,” she added, mentioning that the Clovis Chamber’s YEA! program was among the nation’s finest.
Rick Snow, vice president of Snow Flake Designs and an active participant in the youth program, told the Fresno Bee that Blackney brought business leaders from the community to assist students in business planning. What she was most effective at, he said, was the way she could “steer the students” toward the correct answers, not lecture or direct them.
In fact, the national organization subsequently named an award in Blackney’s honor.
“She tried to make the kids think for themselves and come to their own conclusions,” Snow was quoted as saying.
“Our entire organization so enjoyed working with Fran, and we all continue to be inspired by her enthusiasm for youth entrepreneurship,” Gayle B. Jagel, the founder and CEO of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, wrote in a letter to Fran’s husband, Mark, the Clovis Chamber’s President/CEO.
Christopher Gabriel, a local radio talk show host at the time, wrote a tribute soon after her death that was particularly enlightening. “Fran was one of those rare individuals whose presence alone commanded respect, admiration and the understanding that if she asked for your assistance on something, you jumped. You never questioned Fran. You followed her lead. And that was a good thing because that woman knew how to lead and get the very best out of people,” he stated. w
“We would like to establish the Fran Blackney Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award to recognize a YEA! student – on a national level – with drive and enthusiasm for their community and for promoting a culture of innovation. Our team is eager to recognize Fran’s important work and passion for YEA!” The establishment of the award was officially announced at YEA’s national semifinals competition in Rochester in May. Accolades from the people of Clovis were just as heartfelt as those from the YEA! headquarters. “To me, Fran was this beautiful person that would stand by you no matter the odds. It didn’t matter to her what your skills, education or opposition was. She would stand by you, as steady as a rock, and

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT lovis is constantly growing and changing, the way any vibrant community with a thriving economy does. While there have been a number of additions to the local retail economy over the last year, the most notable development has been the addition of an enclave of civic properties on a large piece of previously undeveloped land on the northern edge of Old Town Clovis, according to Shawn Miller, business development manager for the City of Clovis. It has been named “Landmark Commons” because the new facilities will be located in the approximate location where Clovis was founded 130 years ago. A new 30,000-square-foot public library, owned by the Fresno County Library System, and a new 25,000-square-foot senior center, owned by the City of Clovis, are currently under construction there. So is a new transit hub for transit administration offices and dispatchers. The current 40-year-old library, which is the second-busiest library in the county, has been purchased by the City of Clovis. It will be transformed into city offices. The existing senior center is proposed for use by its neighbor, the San Joaquin College of Law, for use as a law library. Landmark Commons will be located adjacent to the Heritage Center museum and the Old Town bicycle and walking trail. Plans also call for a public plaza to be built in the area, Miller said. Also nearby is the Clovis Veterans Memorial District where more innovation is currently underway. An old vacant industrial building is being transformed into the 5,000-square-foot Clovis Culinary Center, a certified commercial kitchen that those who pay to be members can use to prepare food for their catering businesses or for sale. It is designed to be a business incubator for restaurants and other small food-related businesses, so classes on how to write a business plan and how to scale a recipe to feed a larger group and so forth are planned.
Fresno Ideaworks, a maker’s space venture, will be going into another building in the same general area – a 10,000-square-foot warehouse, built in the 1950s. Similar to the Culinary Center or a gym, people will be able to buy a membership and then go in and take classes or simply use the equipment offered there like woodworking tools, welding equipment, CNC machines, a bike shop and even equipment for spinning yarn. “Both of these facilities will be very cool and they will be located in the Veterans Memorial District and close to Landmark Commons and Old Town Clovis, so everything can feed off of one another,” Miller said. “The commercial kitchen is due to open in late 2016 and the Ideaworks facility will open in the winter or early spring.” Community leaders in Clovis make a concerted effort to attract and welcome new businesses and to support the success of current businesses so that the community may continue to offer a breadth of options for employment, commerce and an active lifestyle. Retail properties throughout Clovis, for instance, are currently being updated, upgraded and expanded. Sierra Vista Mall, which was hard-hit by the recession, is now under new ownership and is managed by The Woodmont Company, a powerful nationwide retail property management organization. It held a grand re-opening in early 2016 and now features Which Wich

booms, and Clovis Community Hospital invests in major expansions like a second new bed tower and a 60,000-square-foot cancer center, according to Miller.
Sandwich Shop, Dickey’s Barbeque Pit, Colton’s Social House bar & grill and Fri Poutinerie, a fast casual restaurant featuring 22 types of Montreal-style smoked meat sandwiches and Canada’s version of nachos featuring fries, sauces and cheese curds. The 16-screen Sierra Vista theater is also being renovated. It is adding luxury seating and facilities to serve alcohol. The Trading Post, another older strip mall located at Herndon and Clovis Avenues, has been revitalized as well. Gryphon Capital, its new owner, rebuilt the parking lot, installed new landscaping and recruited new tenants like Ross Stores, Tuesday Morning and Sprouts Farmers Market.
“Clovis has become a regional magnet for health care and we have many providers of services related to Clovis Community Hospital’s specialties of bariatric surgery and women’s health. We didn’t necessarily expect it, but this has been a boon to our local economy because for many of these specialties, people stay in the hospital for several days and their families come, too, spending time in our local hotels, pumping gas at our gas stations and eating in our restaurants, spending an average of $95 per person, per day,” he said.
Centennial Plaza is creating a lot of excitement, too. Located in Old Town Clovis, south of Fifth Street, this former Department of Motor Vehicles site is being redeveloped with a public plaza, flanked by two large pads that have been sold to the Shamshoian family’s Realty Concepts and to Roger Peterson Investments. Plans call for mixed use, three-story properties featuring retail or restaurants on the first floor and offices above, Miller said.
“Our hotel occupancy rate is a approximately 80 percent most of the time in our eight long-established hotels, so we currently have two more hotels under construction – a La Quinta on Clovis Avenue, south of Barstow, and a Marriott Towne Suites on Shaw Avenue at Helm – which will add 200 rooms to our inventory. A third new hotel is in the planning stages. We need all the hotel rooms we can get,” Miller said.
Clovis also boasts a number of large manufacturers, a major food processor, a healthy professional community, a cluster of educational institutions and a large health care industry.
The work of the staff at the City of Clovis is supplemented by the Fresno County Economic Development Corporation (EDC), a nonprofit which has been assisting communities throughout the county attract and retain business for 36 years.
Among Clovis’ major employers are Clovis Community Hospital; Wawona Frozen Foods; Pelco, the world’s largest security camera and closed circuit television systems manufacturer; Anlin Windows, the largest replacement window firm west of the Mississippi River; NiaccAvitech, a manufacturer of components for the aerospace industry; and German-based KW Automotive, a manufacturer of high-end suspension systems for professional race cars and hot rods. The Clovis Industrial Park is currently undergoing an expansion, as is the Dry Creek Industrial Park. The Clovis Industrial Park is in the process of adding several large speculative buildings. At Dry Creek, the city is installing streets and utilities on 30 acres of adjacent land as it also seeks to provide more space for light industrial companies to locate. Several are currently interested, according to Miller. The Research and Technology Business Park with its excellent access to a freeway off-ramp is also expanding and adding an adjacent retail area with restaurants, day care facilities and gas station to serve those employed in the area. In addition, California Health Sciences University has purchased land in the R & T Park for expansion of their school.
“Clovis also stands out because of its wonderful quality of life, which in the post-recession world has become very important to companies,” she added. “We act as a go-between with businesses and the local, state and federal officials, looking for incentives, programs, workforce dollars and sites for new businesses. And when we help to place a company, we continue to follow them for the first 18 months, checking to see if they need further assistance,” she said. For those who live in Clovis, it’s no secret that Clovis boasts a higherthan-average quality of life. Clovis is the safest city in the region and has one of the best school districts in the nation. It’s also clear that the City of Clovis is striving to be the best place to work, shop, dine and do business. w

For instance, if they are involved in health care, we suggest Clovis because it is the center of health care in the county. We also target Clovis for light industrial and technology firms. Tech companies don’t have to locate in Silicon Valley. We have a huge need for them in the Central Valley, too,” said Lee Ann Eager, president and CEO of the EDC.

The National Parks
Yosemite National Park, which is located approximately 90 minutes away from Clovis by car because of the winding roads, is best known for its waterfalls. But its nearly 1,200 square miles also includes ancient giant sequoias, deep valleys, majestic meadows and some of the best scenery in the world. It offers several lodges, campgrounds, snack bars and restaurants within the park.

Sequoia boasts several groves of the giant California redwood trees (some of which have been hollowed by ancient forest fires), as well as the 8,200-foot summits of the first Sierra peaks. Park facilities include camp grounds, a few lodges, a snack bar and a store.
Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park are located much closer to Clovis and are adjacent to each other in the central part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Kings Canyon features canyon walls that rise almost 3,300 feet on each side with sheer granite cliffs and beautiful waterfalls. The scenery is truly spectacular. Within the park there are plentiful camping facilities, lodges, restaurants and stables.

Chamber Events Director Tammi Walton has the leisure of choosing from the very best merchandise to present at the show. Over 40 food booths dot the venue, sating every kind of appetite. In the Bullard Food Court you’ll find barbecues, international cuisine and even shrimp stuffed artichokes. Every kind of snack type foods line Pollasky Avenue. It’s a hard choice between kettle korn, shaved ice, chocolate covered fruits, hot, gooey cinnamon rolls, cotton candy and ice cream. Quench your thirst with a Pepsi product sold by a nonprofit group. The Bud Light Beer Garden gets into full swing, featuring local live bands that accompany a cool brew. This is also home to the Big Dry Creek Historical Society Museum where visitors can learn more about the rich history of the area, including details of the 1925 robbery of the First National Bank of Clovis.
They don’t forget the little ones. Visit the Don Mauer carnival or let them ride on the miniature horses, roll around in the giant water bubbles and have their faces painted.
Old Town Clovis is also a great jumping off point for numerous motor/bicycle nature trails from which you will see rushing rivers, historic sites, working farms and towering redwoods.
Started over 75 years ago as part of the rodeo celebration, BIG Hat Days has become one of the major festivals in the country. It not only provides safe family fun for visitors, but it also produces over $9 million to the city coffers as its huge crowds visit other city establishments.

The casinos in Clovis and the surrounding area provide a fun way for adult visitors to spend their evenings and other time away from the weather. There are four close by including Table Mountain, Chukchansi, the Clovis 500 Club and Club One. BIG Hat Days
The Table Mountain Casino BIG Hat Days, a Clovis Chamber event, starts the month out with the largest two day celebration in Central California, second only to the Big Fresno Fair in attendance. Over 140,000 visitors travel to Old Town Clovis to enjoy the free festival that covers more than 15 blocks.

Rodeo Days
In late April, Clovis starts looking like an old-fashioned Western town as cowboys and animals start arriving for the Annual Clovis Rodeo. Held on the last full weekend, it is California’s second-oldest rodeo, begun in 1914. During the month, several events including art shows, roping contests and the crowning of the rodeo queen lead up to the great event that attracts over 40,000 participants and spectators to the arena. Fans enjoy the excitement of seeing steer wrestling, bull riding, bulldogging, barrel racing and mutton busting by children from ages 5 to 8. Fresno Art Museum
Art lovers interested in art depicting local scenes, as well as work by local artists, enjoy visiting the Fresno Art Museum at North First Street and East Clinton Avenue, a full-fledged, accredited museum that boasts a wide range of artwork in a variety of mediums, displayed across six galleries, according to Brett Hedrick, former chairman of the museum’s board. “We change our exhibits three times a year so that there is always something new to see and bring in many special exhibits like the fiber art show we held over the summer and the Frida Kahlo exhibit we displayed last year,” Hedrick said. “We even have a collection of pre-Columbian art.” “The museum is a little 66-year-old gem that is very reflective of our valley,” he added. “It is like a small San Francisco Museum of Art.” The museum is open Thursdays through Sundays and admission is $10 for adults (18 and older), $5 for youth (ages 6 to 17) and free for children five and younger.

Live Theater
Good Company Players produces a dozen shows per year, performing them at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre, 1226 N. Wishon Ave., Fresno and at 2nd Space Theatre, 928 E. Olive, Fresno. “We use Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre for our more commercial productions like Camelot and A Christmas Story the Musical. It is a 240-seat theater,” explained Dan Pessano, managing director. “2nd Space, which is a 150-seat black box theatre, is used for shows like Witness for the Prosecution and Blithe Spirit.” “Our mission as a community-based theater is to both provide high quality entertainment to our season ticket holders and to provide training and an outlet for our local performers,” he said. “There is a huge amount of pride and love involved.” “We are thrilled by the renaissance that seems to be taking place in the Clovis/Fresno theater world. In the last five years alone there are five or six new diverse theater groups that have begun and they are finding their own audiences. We are also noticing that the quality of the professional tours coming to the valley is improving. For instance, when Wicked came, they sold out 14 performances. The national tours aren’t just planning to be here for one or two nights anymore,” Pessano said. Another popular local troupe is CenterStage Clovis Community Theater. “One of our chief goals is to provide top quality entertainment that’s appropriate for the entire family,” said Scott Hancock, artistic director. “At this past summer’s Beauty and the Beast, the cast was a direct reflection of the audience we drew: all age groups and all walks of life.”

CenterStage has presented musicals and theatrical productions at various venues in the Clovis/Fresno area. Large musicals, comedies, dramas, classical Shakespeare in the Park, an original musical production and a one-man show have all been brought to the community over the years by CenterStage. Today it generally produces one musical each summer with an occasional straight play as a second show, Hancock said.

Other Events
In addition to large, nationally recognized events, Clovis also presents many smaller, community events from the Old Town Wine Walks and Craft Beer Crawls, which take place both spring and fall. Antiques & Collectibles and Glorious Junk Days are scheduled in spring and fall, too. The holiday shopping season kicks off with One Enchanted Evening in November. ClovisFest & Hot Air Balloon Fun Fly
October means autumn leaves, football and the Table Mountain Casino ClovisFest, Kaiser Permanente Hot Air Balloon Fun Fly, and the new Clovis Cultural Village, a Clovis Chamber event. Over 70,000 visitors return to Old Town Clovis for a weekend of free family fun. The days start out with the launch of dozens of hot air balloons that inflate and take off across the valley skies. Visitors fill the rodeo grounds, enjoy hot cinnamon rolls or pancakes and can get close to the inflating orbs. They then cross the street to enjoy the festival. Over 250 craft and food booths fill 14 blocks offering great merchandise and a wide variety of foods to eat. The Don Mauer Family carnival will entertain the little ones who can get fancy balloon animals on Fourth Street. Don’t forget the cotton candy and ice cream. And be sure to visit the merchants in Old Town who are open for business and have unique merchandise to sell. n

Originally located in downtown Fresno, Saint Agnes moved to its current location at 1303 E. Herndon Ave. in 1975 when it needed to expand to meet the growing needs of the community, according to Nancy Hollingsworth, president and CEO. “Saint Agnes is particularly well-known for its heart and vascular medicine, women and infants services, cancer care and surgical services,” she said. “We have also earned an overall 3-star rating from the Society for Thoracic Surgeons for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, and are the first hospital in this market to offer the TAVR Procedure, a non-invasive heart valve replacement.” This state-of-the-art facility, which receives 80,000 annual emergency visits, also offers robotic surgery, comprehensive breast, brain and lung cancer clinics, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, and many other advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services. Believing that every mother and her baby deserve a birthing experience that’s second to none, Saint Agnes offers newly remodeled, all private postpartum rooms with extra amenities and ample space for families to bond. In addition, Saint Agnes prides itself on providing its patients with many of the intangibles that contribute to maintaining and regaining good health like visits by the hospital’s pet therapy dogs, known as “Heavenly Hounds.” These four-legged friends bring comfort to patients, which is proven to aid in the healing process by lowering stress, pain, blood pressure and loneliness. And, for those who wish to spend quiet time in prayer or meditation, the hospital’s chapel doors are always open, with Mass or Eucharistic services held daily. “We focus on body, mind and spirit,” Hollingsworth said. Saint Agnes is also a presence in the larger community. The medical center, in cooperation with the Sisters of the Holy Cross, owns and operates the Holy Cross Center for Women and the Holy Cross Clinic at Poverello House – both in downtown Fresno. The two programs, aimed at supporting the community’s underserved and uninsured, provide respite and skills training for women and their children, and free medical and dental services, respectively. Additionally, Saint Agnes has launched the Saint Agnes Health Hub to provide important health resources to those in need. With a focus on addressing the non-clinical social determinants of health, resources are leveraged to help patients and community members with access to stable housing, healthy foods, reliable transportation and help with medication management.
The hospital also works with the American Lung Association to provide the Better Breathers Club for individuals with respiratory illnesses, runs a support/education program for patients suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia, and offers a free chronic disease management program to empower individuals with, or are at risk of developing, a chronic disease to live a healthier lifestyle. Other signature outreach programs include “Footsteps” for children and teens dealing with loss from death, divorce or incarceration; and the very popular “Spirit of Women” program that empowers women to take charge of their health and wellbeing through entertaining and educational programs held year-round. With a desire to not only meet the community’s acute care needs, but also play a role in preventing disease and promoting health and wellness, Saint Agnes has opened multiple care sites throughout our community that offer a wide range of services. These include OB/ GYN, general surgery, cardiac surgery, gastrointestinal oncology surgery, neurosurgery, plastics and aesthetics, and women’s health and fertility, as well as primary care, internal medicine and urgent care.
