WELCOME
FROM THE CHAIRMAN I tell my 4 daughters that with a strong work ethic and an unshakable positive attitude - A Can Do Attitude - there is nothing they can’t accomplish. That through Grit and Optimism - the world is their oyster. This is how I feel about Clovis. Once a small farming and cow town with grain fields as far as the eye could see, sown by Clovis Cole himself, Clovis is now a burgeoning metropolitan community, and one of the most sought after places to work and raise a family in the entire state of CA. While times may change and technology advances, some truths remain steadfast and endure. I am proud to say that this same unwavering Grit and Optimism that put Clovis, “The Gateway to the Sierra,” on the map, is the same Grit and Optimism that continues to drive Clovis, and the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, forward today. What does Clovis mean to you? Depending on who you ask, you will undoubtedly get a different answer. Clovis is bound by a fabric of several resolute and unflappable qualities that bind us all together: our love for and devotion to family, faith, and our deep rooted community; our commitment to and compassion for our neighbor; our Exemplary School District; our world famous Rodeo; our strong rural agricultural history; and even though we are a large city by any modern measure, we love our small town feel.
The Clovis Chamber of Commerce is not different in its adherence to promoting these same ideals and values, that have made, and continue to make, Clovis a great community to live, work and raise a family in. Through its commitment to fostering a healthy, strong and vibrant business community, the Clovis Chamber’s Mission Statement says it all: The mission of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce is to advocate and support a healthy business environment which improves the quality of life in Clovis. On behalf of the Clovis Chamber Board of Directors, it is my hope that 2020 brings your businesses and families the success and prosperity that come from Grit and Optimism, qualities that made this town great, and continue to make Clovis a shining star in the State of California. To become a member of the Clovis Chamber, or for more information, please call (559) 299-7363 or email us at info@clovischamber.com. Respectfully, Ryan Indart 2020 Chair, Clovis Chamber of Commerce
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Clovis Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the 2020 Clovis Lifestyle & Resource Guide. This year we are celebrating “Clovis - A Way of Life.” The City of Clovis is a truly unique community made up of the pioneer spirit mixed with modern enthusiasm. As you thumb through the pages of this magazine, you will learn about the many facets that make up the City of Clovis from the exciting annual Clovis Rodeo to our outstanding schools, outdoor life, craft beers, dining, and shopping. On behalf of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce we are glad you decided to take the opportunity to enjoy all that Clovis has to offer. Since the Clovis Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1910, we have worked closely with the local business community to create a harmonious climate of cooperation with our local merchants, residents, visitors and city government. The Clovis Chamber is a strong advocate of our over 600 members in addition to the entire central valley. We know that an active and successful business community means a strong and stable community our residents.
Clovis is thriving and growing. At the Clovis Chamber of Commerce we are not only supportive of our Chamber members, but we proudly support everything about our community. More and more families move to Clovis each year and our community is embracing our new residents. The major attraction for families is the award winning Clovis Unified School District and its strong leadership, state of the art facilities and a dedicated administration and staff. Medical professionals and students are flocking to Clovis from around the country to teach and learn at the new California Health Sciences University campus which will open in April 2020. Clovis Community Medical Center, Valley Children’s Hospital and St. Agnes medical center are also attracting the best of the best in health care professionals to serve our community. Whether you are visiting our community for the first time, considering a move to Clovis, or seeking exciting, new things to do in your own hometown, we at the Clovis Chamber extend a heartfelt WELCOME. We’re very happy you are here. Greg Newman Executive Director, Clovis Chamber of Commerce

The City of Clovis hosts over 80 outdoor events each year. From the world famous Clovis Rodeo held the last weekend of April each year to the Friday night Farmers Markets held from May – September. The Clovis Chamber is very proud to host Clovis’ two largest street festivals each year, BIG Hat Days and ClovisFest. BIG Hat Days takes over the streets of Old Town the first weekend in April each year to start Rodeo month in Clovis. Thousands of families visit Clovis during the two day festival and enjoy the over 400 food and craft vendors in addition to live entertainment. ClovisFest held the last weekend in October each year is highlighted by the dozens of Hot Air Balloons that majestically fly
over the City of Clovis during the ClovisFest Hot Air Balloon Fun Fly. ClovisFest also features our acclaimed International Village entertainment stage featuring live entertainment from over 25 cultural groups that are a part of our great community. These wonderful traditional events, along with the annual Children’s Christmas parade, Rodeo parade, pole vaulting championships and the many athletic events hosted by the Clovis Unified School District make living in Clovis fun and exciting.

CLOVIS ECONOMIC GROWTH Situated in California’s San Joaquin Valley, approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Clovis is a rapidly growing, but carefully planned, community. Making sure that Clovis continues to offer a breadth of options for employment, commerce and an active lifestyle is the aim. City planners are constantly evaluating where new growth should be permitted and what city services need to be offered in order to make that expansion successful, said Shawn Miller, Business Development Manager for the City of Clovis. As with any community, some growth and redevelopment are carefully planned and painstakingly cultivated. But other growth tends to happen more spontaneously. Such has been the case recently with the aging Shaw Avenue area of Clovis that was largely developed during the 1970s. It had been aging and falling out of favor in recent years, despite many different efforts by the city to revitalize it, Miller noted.
But then came the news that Costco would build a new and much larger store on Clovis Avenue near Shaw Avenue and the environment changed drastically. Property values in the area are rising as a new pizza restaurant and a new Starbuck’s have opened. In addition, aging shopping centers in the general vicinity are being revitalized and the Sierra Vista Mall, directly across the street from the new Costco, has a new owner. Vacant buildings in the area are also finding exciting new tenants. “Shaw Avenue is now a returning champion,” Miller said. “Having Costco relocate there has been a great shot in the arm for Shaw Avenue and a good lesson for us. The city spent a lot of time and money trying to boost and revitalize Shaw Avenue but once we got that key piece of private investment there, it spontaneously happened. Several private interests working independently suddenly saw value in the area.”

The Loma Vista section of Clovis is also starting to boom. Located in the southeastern portion of the community, its development has been in the planning stages for about 20 years, Miller said. Several builders are constructing homes in the area and it has now reached the point where there are enough Loma Vista residents that commercial applications from retailers, restaurants and service businesses are rolling in. Most of those businesses will likely be built surrounding a large rectangular neighborhood park with an amphitheater which is planned for the area. “The market will determine which businesses locate there but we anticipate restaurants, grocery stores, drycleaners, offices and things like that,” Miller said. “I anticipate that by next fall construction will begin.” A similar expansion of single-family homes and businesses is also underway in the

MOVE YOUR MONEY TO WHERE YOU’RE WORTH MORE!
In the northeastern corner of Clovis, the new Sierra Gateway Business Corridor is focusing largely on healthcare, according to Miller. Clovis Community Hospital, Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Central Valley Indian Health are all located there and the new California Health Sciences University, the Veterans Administration and Valley Children’s Hospital all have construction underway nearby. Consequently, Miller said, the area has become a magnet for health-related service businesses. Imaging centers, physical therapy offices and medical services offices are now opening all through the area and older people from the outlying rural areas are choosing to relocate to this area in order to be closer to medical attention, should it be needed. “We didn’t force anything in this area. It is just happening thanks to the nearby medical investment. Riley’s Brew Pub is already there and we expect more restaurants and hotels to start realizing the potential and opening there, too,” Miller added. Industry also has a part to play in the life of Clovis. Cabinet Connection, a large cabinet-maker with about 100 employees, is moving from Fresno to Clovis. They recently broke ground on a large piece of property along Herndon Avenue between Villa and Minnewawa Avenues and expect to open by late 2020. The move to Clovis will allow them to consolidate operations into one location. They have been operating from three separate facilities in Fresno. w

The addition of these three new businesses has further enhanced the strong appeal of the Old Town/SoFi District, said Shawn Miller, Business Development Manager for the City of Clovis. The other area within Clovis with multiple dining, shopping and entertainment venues is along Shaw Avenue near the Sierra Vista Mall. The Mall itself features Kohl’s, Sears, Target, a large movie theater, numerous restaurants and two large entertainment venues offering indoor go-kart racing and laser tag. The recently-closed K-Mart and Toys R Us stores across from the mall have also found new tenants. Held on the last full weekend, it is California’s second-oldest rodeo, begun in 1914. In 2020, the Rodeo will be expanding to 5 days. The event, which supports local charities, includes art shows, roping contests, the crowning of the rodeo queen, as well as steer wrestling, bull riding, bulldogging, barrel racing and mutton busting (by children from ages 5 to 8). Tickets can be purchased at clovisrodeo.com

ClovisFest Hot Air Balloon Funfly & International Village October means autumn leaves, football and the Table Mountain Casino ClovisFest and the Noble Credit Union Hot Air Balloon Fun Fly, a Clovis Chamber event. The days start out with the launch of dozens of hot air balloons at the Rodeo Grounds, a selection of food and coffee and you can get close to the inflating balloons. After the balloon launch, enjoy ClovisFest where over 250 craft and food booths fill 14 blocks offering great merchandise and a wide variety of foods to eat. The carnival will entertain the little ones who can get fancy balloon animals on Fourth Street and goodies in the Kids Zone. The International Village, sponsored by The Fresno/Clovis Convention and Visitors Bureau, at ClovisFest brings the community entertainment throughout the day with live performances and cultural booths. Performers from different cultures and heritages showcase their dances and musical instruments on a large outdoor stage. Organizations set up booths for the community to learn about their culture. Children can participate in the Passport program and visit each booth to receive a stamp and maybe win a raffle prize.

SPORTS Clovis is a community where sports play an integral part in the lifestyle. Its vast playing fields, tracks, courts, gymnasiums and pools are busy and occupied year-round, thanks to the area’s enviable weather, said Denver Stairs, assistant superintendent of facility services for the Clovis Unified School District, which owns many Clovis area sports facilities. “If you drive by virtually any sports field in Clovis between 3 and 5 p.m., you will see school sports teams practicing or competing and then if you drive by again between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. you will find club and recreational teams using those same fields for their practices and games,” Stairs said. “For instance, Clovis is a huge soccer community for kids from kindergarten through high school, both boys and girls. You will often see six or seven games going on simultaneously on adjoining fields, all seasons of the year,” he added. During the fall, Clovis youth, depending on their abilities and interests, are playing/competing in football, club soccer, cross country, volleyball, water polo, girls’ tennis, girls’ golf and club rugby. In winter, the favorite sports are basketball, school soccer and wrestling, while in spring it is girls’ badminton, boys’ tennis, boys’ golf, track, baseball, softball, swimming and diving. Studies have shown that sports of all kinds improve participants’ mood, concentration and sleep habits; reduce stress and depression; boost self-confidence; help maintain a healthy weight; and develop leadership traits. So Clovis’ attachment to youth sports is a healthy choice and fortunately, studies have also shown that when children start participating in sports at a young age, they are far more likely to stay active as adults, playing softball, baseball and more. Studies have also shown that participating in a team sport improves academic performance and results in more after-school participation. Furthermore, team sports seem to be breeding grounds for leadership traits because participants have the opportunity to train, try, win or lose together. They are also more likely to adopt a “team” mindset in the workplace.
“Children in Clovis enjoy our emphasis on mind, body and spirit and grow up loving and enjoying sports,” Stairs said. “All of us see the importance of children being involved in a variety of activities. Participating in sports, as well as band, cheerleading and other activities, gives them a sense of belonging and a feeling of school spirit. “We even have an All Clovis Week when all of the high schools play each other in football and during that week the various high school bands come to the district office to perform. There is a lot of pride involved,” Stairs noted.
High school students even have the opportunity to take a course called “Lifetime Sports” that teaches them how to bowl, play golf and tennis and other sports not necessarily associated with schools. “The whole idea is to create well-rounded students by offering them the most opportunities that we can,” Stairs said. w
www.clovischamber.com
Involvement in physical activity and sports carries over to the adults and families, too. The district encourages everyone to use the playing fields for active endeavors.

EDUCATION Clovis Unified School District Nestled in the heart of the Central Valley, Clovis Unified School District serves a student population of more than 43,000 students who live in the urban areas of Clovis and Fresno, and the rural community of Friant. The 14th largest school district in California, CUSD is also one of the highest performing public school systems in the state. Last year, Clovis Unified students’ English scores were the highest of any large school district in the state, and math scores were the second highest. In a recent message to the community, Superintendent Eimear O’Farrell, Ed.D., described the district’s philosophy toward education: “Founding Clovis Unified Superintendent Doc Buchanan used to say, ‘The schools belong to the people,’ and our people are our community. Doc was a visionary educator, and he understood from the start that great education is only possible when we as a community work in partnership together. We would not be the district we are today without the support, generosity and goodwill of our community, one that values an exemplary education and has continuously put trust in Clovis Unified for the past 59 years.” Clovis Unified’s community of nearly 6,000 educators is focused on this year’s district-wide theme of “Inspiring Excellence,” a reminder that our standards should always be high. Working
together, we can and we are Inspiring Excellence! Just a few of the recent results of inspiring excellence that are being celebrated in Clovis Unified include: • 2019 Best Communities for Music Education by the NAAM foundation. • 21 consecutive Meritorious Budget Awards by the Association for School Business Officials International. • Highest scores in English/language arts and second highest in math out of the 20 largest California school districts. • 14 Bonner Character Award schools; 18 California Business Educational Excellence Honor Roll schools; 11 Civic Learning Award schools; 16 California PBIS schools; 6 California Distinguished Schools; 1 California Gold Ribbon School (Liberty Elementary); 1 National Blue Ribbon School (Liberty Elementary); and 1 Model Continuation School (Gateway High for the fifth consecutive year). • 1 (of only 10 in the nation) Terrel H. Bell Award honoring outstanding principals (George Petersen, Liberty Elementary). • California State Athletic School of the Year (Buchanan High); 7 State Individual Athlete Championship Titles; 3 State, 20 out of 25 Valley and 22 out of 24 League Athletic Team Titles. Offering extensive academic and co-curricular programs to all students, each school in Clovis Unified offers a unique and localized approach to carrying out the district’s aim of maximizing achievement for all students. California Health Sciences University California Health Sciences University (CHSU) is a private institution located in Clovis, CA and committed to fulfilling its mission of educating students and health care professionals to improve access to quality health care in the San Joaquin Valley. Founded by the Assemi family in 2012, in response to the deficit of health care providers in the valley and lack of opportunities for local students to pursue careers in health care, the university has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception. In the four-year Doctor of Pharmacy program at CHSU, students learn contemporary pharmacy practice through a team-based learning approach and learn how to provide primary patient care in collaboration with health care providers. Students refine their clinical skills under direct supervision of practicing pharmacists and physicians during rotations at hospitals, clinics and community pharmacies. This is a critical part of the curriculum as pharmacists are now expected to take on a role providing more direct care with patients.
Clovis Chamber of Commerce
CHSU has also launched their medical school within the College of Osteopathic Medicine building at the University’s new campus located at 2500 Alluvial Avenue in Clovis. The brand new, state-of-the-art building features a simulation center, osteopathic skills lab, and large classrooms with capacity for 200-300 students. The new building also includes a library, student lounge, ample study spaces, faculty offices, and a teaching kitchen for educating students and the community about healthy meal preparation. The first class of seventy-five (75) medical students will matriculate in July 2020, with the class size growing to 150 within two years. Aligned with the university mission, the College hopes to recruit, train and retain physicians for the underserved population in the Central Valley under the leadership of John Graneto, DO, MEd, Dean for the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Through the continued growth of both programs, and future plan to construct up to eight (8) additional Colleges, the University will progress towards achieving their mission of helping remedy the shortage of health care providers in the Central Valley. For more information about CHSU programs, employment opportunities or to schedule a campus tour, visit chsu.edu or call (559) 325 3600. › (continued on page 25)

Clovis Way o f Life
THE CLOVIS RODEO Always Held the Last Weekend in April it is one of Fresno County’s Most Popular Events It is often said The American Cowboy Tradition called “rodeo” got its start when “one ranch said they had a horse that couldn’t be rode, and another ranch said they had a cowboy that couldn’t be thrown.” For a dedicated group of volunteers, preserving the cattle ranching legacy of the region, the sport of professional rodeo, and the Clovis Way of Life is why this 5-day event has become one of the top 10 rodeos in the nation. The annual Clovis Rodeo is always celebrated the last (full) weekend in April. The 106th Clovis Rodeo will take place April 21-25, 2020. There are also a lot of events throughout the month of April where fans can participate. Those include a local Jackpot Roping, the Clovis Ranch Rodeo competition, a parade and the John W. Jones Memorial Steer Wrestling. Guests are encouraged to visit www.clovisrodeo.com for the latest news and calendar of events. Professional Bull Riding, two great concerts with some of Country Music’s rising stars along with four days of Professional Rodeo Cowboy action and lots of great food and more entertainment make-up this annual weeklong event. It is a week (and more) of full throttle action that includes both timed and roughstock rodeo events. In the roughstock rodeo events that include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding; a contestant’s score is equally dependent upon his performance and the bull or bucking horse’s performance. To earn a qualified ride a cowboy must stay on for 8-seconds. In timed events such as steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing, cowboys and cowgirls at the other end of the arena compete against the clock for the best time.
The all-volunteer, not-for-profit Clovis Rodeo Association (CRA) has about 700 dedicated members. More than $300,000 in proceeds from the Clovis Rodeo and related events coordinated

by CRA benefit numerous local charities annually, including 4-H, FFA, Clovis Unified School District, Marjorie E. Radin Breast Cancer Center, Clovis Community Medical Center, Fresno State Rodeo Team, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Valley Children’s Healthcare, Break the Barriers, Boy Scouts of America, and the Central California Blood Center. Always held the last weekend in April the small festival that was started more than 100 years ago is now a professional sporting event that attracts champion cowboys and cowgirls from throughout the world to compete on some of the best livestock in rodeo. It takes more than 50,000 fans, almost 800 cowboys and cowgirls and 350 elite stock animals along with 8,000 pounds of tri-tip and a year of planning to pull off the community event. The rodeo generates more than $12 million in economic impact for the City of Clovis and surrounding region. Ticket prices range from $20 to $35.00 and can be purchased online by visiting www.clovisrodeo.com from January through April. The rodeo grounds are located on Clovis Avenue between Bullard and Shaw in the heart of downtown Clovis. It is an easy walk from any of the many hotels in the community. Parking at the rodeo grounds is free of charge. We hope you’ll dust off your hat and boots and join us for the Clovis Rodeo. Didn’t bring your boots, don’t worry, you can purchase any of the items you might need from the local merchants throughout the community who help make this annual event possible. Visit clovisrodeo.com for event details, additional information and a calendar of rodeo activities in Clovis, California.
www.clovischamber.com
The Rodeo Association understands that it is Clovis’ rich and meaningful history that sets the community apart. Rodeo volunteers believe that remembering your roots, and what it took to get here, helps them have a deeper appreciation for the days ahead. The rodeo, to this day, remains a time for friends, family and neighbors to come together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company.

Known for its quiet charm, the city is located in the northeast section of the San Joaquin Valley and provides easy access to several well-known cities, national parks and seaside towns. Neighboring the city of Fresno, Clovis enjoys the convenience of transportation options that are usually reserved for larger cities. Clovis Transit (Round Up and Stageline) and the Fresno Area Express serve the public transportation needs of the area. Air travel is available through the Fresno Yosemite International Airport and Amtrak provides rail travel from its station located in Fresno.

San Joaquin College of Law San Joaquin College of Law is a nonprofit law school in Clovis founded in 1969 by Fresno County Municipal Court Judge Dan Eymann, U.S. District Court Judge Oliver Wanger and attorney John Loomis. Among the college’s alumni ranks are 53 bench officers, including 21 Superior Court judges, 18 State/Federal Administrative Law judges and 12 commissioners. Eight alumni have served as district attorneys; currently, the district attorneys for Fresno, Madera, and Kings Counties are SJCL alumni. More than 33 percent of the total practicing lawyers in Fresno County are San Joaquin College of Law graduates. Along with a top-notch education, students have numerous externship opportunities, ranging from the district attorney and public defender’s offices to countless private practices such as agriculture, patents, personal injury, real estate, business, bankruptcy and assistance to low-income residents. The college’s New American Legal Clinic offers students handson experience in helping legal residents obtain citizenship. The law school has received significant grants to aid in this process, including a $250,000 grant from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is shared with Fresno Adult School. In its seven-year history, the clinic has provided such services for over 1,000 legal permanent residents from at least 25 countries. The clinic is staffed with a full-time attorney, client services coordinators, student advocates and volunteer attorneys from the community.

The campus is both gorgeous and historic. In 1996, the college relocated to the original Clovis High School building, which was built in 1920. A multi-million-dollar renovation, including a new courtroom, lecture hall and enlarged library, allowed the college to expand, while still maintaining the historic character of the building. San Joaquin College of Law has entered into an agreement to buy the nearby Clovis Senior Center building when the center moves to a new location. The new site will serve as an expanded library. w

Saint Agnes Medical Center Founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, circa 1929, Saint Agnes Medical Center was established to meet the specific health care needs of the Central Valley. In a legacy spanning nine decades, Saint Agnes has shaped care for valley residents by always providing its services with the highest level of compassion and quality. Saint Agnes is a member of Trinity Health, one of the largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems in the United States. The Trinity Health System is a network of 92 hospitals that collaborate to provide millions of patients with innovative and high-quality health care every year.
programs for children and teens. On average, the center serves 114 women and children every day. Across the street from the center, housed inside Poverello House, is Holy Cross Clinic, where low-income and underinsured patients can come to receive free medical and dental care. In the past year, the clinic has served more than 5,000 patients. The goal has always been to care for patients and their loved ones with the highest quality and most compassionate health care available. Saint Agnes has a long history in the health of the valley and will continue striving to provide excellence in all areas of service. ›
From emergency, diagnostic, surgical and obstetric services to state-of-the-art cardiac, cancer, orthopaedic and neurological care, Saint Agnes combines the most advanced equipment and technology with the expertise of top-ranked physicians and staff to meet the valley’s growing and diverse health care needs. The award-winning 436-bed acute care hospital is well respected for its clinical and service excellence and has been recognized as one of the Best Regional Hospitals in California by U.S. News & World Report. Saint Agnes has received Blue Distinction Center designations for its knee and hip replacement, maternity care and spine surgery specialties by delivering better results and fewer complications than other facilities. It is also the only hospital in Fresno County to be internationally recognized as a BabyFriendly designated birth facility. Adding to its list of accolades, Saint Agnes received national recognition from Healthgrades for providing superior outcomes in spine surgery, heart attack treatment, back surgery and patient safety. Saint Agnes’ arena of care extends well beyond the hospital itself. In partnership with nonprofit subsidiary, Saint Agnes Care, Saint Agnes offers primary, specialty and urgent care services from more than 50 providers at more than 20 locations across Fresno, Clovis and now in Visalia. These facilities offer a diverse range of services to meet the complex health needs of the valley. Intent on making health care more accessible to valley residents, Saint Agnes started a Graduate Medical Education program aimed at supporting and growing a local supply of physicians to serve Central California’s growing population. In just two short years, it has established internal medicine and family practice residency programs and anticipates starting an emergency medicine residency in 2020. The Central Valley is a region of great need and Saint Agnes gives back to the community through both ministry and outreach programs. One such program is the Saint Agnes Health Hub, a free program staffed by a team of Community Health Workers that addresses the social issues impeding good health. Through participation in the program, underserved patients gain access to stable housing, health care, healthy food and reliable transportation, all of which help to ensure more successful health outcomes.
The Holy Cross Center for Women, located in downtown Fresno, is a respite and learning center for homeless and low-income women and their children and is the only day shelter in Fresno. The center offers counseling and referral services, spiritual support, educational opportunities, skills training and summer
